Homeschool Unit Study Human Body Hands-On Kids Stethoscope Activity

This next homeschool unit study human body will be a large one for us. Also I have this Human Body Crafts page for more fun ideas.

We won’t get lopsided with our unit study topics, which is so easy for us to do because of our love for history and geography.

I got excited about this next unit study though because with the older two boys they just wanted to read and health and move on.

Tiny is always up for as many hands-on activities as we can fit into the day and he doesn’t care if they are too young-ish or old-ish, he’s in.

Did I mention the kid is such a joy to teach?

We started off with an easy hands-on activity. And you know my standard is always minimal fuss with maximum fun when doing hands-on.

So we made an easy diy stethoscope.

We use to have a stethoscope when we were in the states, but not here. Besides, it was more fun to make it quickie quick.

Kids Fun Stethoscope Activity

The list is short and easy for what you need and if you’re like me, you already have these items in your house.

  • paper towel tube
  • funnel
  • masking tape
  • watch to count seconds

Place the paper towel tube on top of the funnel, the narrow end.

Wrap the tape around the tube for a DIY stethoscope @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Be sure to tape it down real good as you don’t want any air to escape or want any gaps.

Listen to the heart @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Then practice finding the heartbeat and count the beats within 15 seconds. Multiply that by four and that is the resting heart beat.

Mr. Awesome 2015 was sick that day, so he was actually a good candidate for Tiny.

Though Mr. Awesome did not feel like exercising, he walked up and back down the stairs one time to elevate his heart beat.

Tiny compared that to the resting heart beat. It was a fun and easy activity to kick off our next unit study.

I have collected some history pop up books, printables, ideas and resources roundup.

You know our love for paper folding in our lapbooks and who can resist the hands-on of a pop-up book? Tiny and I have had a hankering to do some in our upcoming unit studies.  To get us inspired, I have collected some history pop up printables, ideas and resources roundup.

Pop-ups are for any age and some of the pop-ups show that you learn other subjects beyond designing your pop-ups.

This first picture I really love because the eyes are cut out and the creator placed a different paper behind it to make moving eyes.  Wouldn’t this make a nifty idea for a history portrait of a famous person?

Then the pop-up book about Ancient Egypt made over at Guesthollow just looks too fun not to make and easy enough to add to a page.

Grab this free printable from Teacher Vision for a pop-up book that reviews the origins of the Declaration of Independence.Add it to any American history unit study.

The next picture, which is pop up figures of the founding fathers looks like another easy project to make learning about history fun.  The founding fathers are simply glued on a page.  Wouldn’t this make a nice trade off to a boring report on any person in history?

Though this next pop up, which is a medieval castle by Pukaca and is sold on Etsy, it may be worth the bucks.  If nothing else, I am inspired by the paper engineering of it.

This next minibook of Leonardo Da Vinci’s invention is just way too cool.  It was created by Sara Alvarez at Chapurreao Blogspot.  The pop-up contains four inventions and a work architecture of Leonardo da Vinci, a flying machine, a boat hydraulics, a war machine and a mechanical man.

It measures 2.1 cm wide x 2.4 cm high. Many parts of the machinery of each drop are printed on both sides.

At least we can draw inspiration from it even if to just drool at the pages.

This next pop up includes a free ship download (update no longer free) and it is from my very favorite pop up artist Robert Sabuda.  You know I have mentioned his books before because we collect them.  But this would make a great addition to an explorer’s unit or even to our World of Columbus and Sons unit study. There are step by step instructions on his page.

The second picture is a pop up of a castle and he has a template too, along with step by step instructions on the page.

This next pop up is about the the 7 wonders of the Ancient World by Arteascuola.  She uses felt tip pens, scissors, colored cardboard strips and a ruler to create this interactive way to remember history.

Then the next pop is a fun one to do for a bit of art history and it’s about Van Gogh and his chair.  Check out the instructions on the page Art with Mrs. Smith.

And then I found one more castle that gave step by step instructions on Dick Blick. Too, like the website says this is not just for elementary aged children but also for junior because it promotes awareness of not just history, but geometry.

The next pop is a free printable too at Ellen McHenry’s Basement Workshop and it is a Pop-Up Bunraku Theater Scene to enhance your study of Japan.

The next popup is an easy one for the littles. It is a Paper Powhatan Pop-Up Village by Flamingo Fabulous.  Depending on the age of your child, you could even have them draw, write or label the geography parts of it and/or locate geographical features.  It can’t get any easier than this.

Then, I couldn’t resist sharing the pop-up matchbook sarcophagus by Small World Land where they share step by step how they made the pop ups.

Remember, pop-ups are not just for young children. I am amazed at the feat of paper engineering if only we give it a try.  We will be trying one or two!  How about you?

Doing a quick round up of lapbooking resources, I am hoping you can use this list as a springboard to creating a lapbook that your children may be hankering to do.

You know sometimes it’s hard to find a lapbook that fits exactly on the topic your child is interested in doing.

At times, I just turn to my lists that I have bookmarked so that we can put one together even if that means using part of something we make and resources pulled from other places.

Lapbook resources to build your own lapbook

Here is a collection of things I like and have bookmarked and use at times.  Most are free and then I list some at the bottom that I have in my library, but they all give you a starting place.

Learn from the pop up pro, Robert Sabuda and make a cool pop up book.  You have to check out his 3D dimensional books too.

I used some of these books when teaching language arts to the boys.

Plus the books get the creative juices flowing for ideas for any language arts lapbook.  Guess what? I still have our pop up books.

It doesn’t matter what age you are, you can get lost in the beautiful intricate paper pop up books by Robert Sabuda especially when you start folding and moving the parts. These books are part of my “keeper” collection for our homeschool.

Our year end co-op is always worth the time that it “distracts” me. Making a Roman shield and helmet compliments of some free cardboard and an easy costume equals a memorable day for Tiny. I promise to share all the easy how-to tips in upcoming posts.

But now that its May–YIKES– that means curriculum planner updates are coming soon too.  Hold on to your britches as I switch between topics in the upcoming weeks like my home management binder + my unit study printables + adding in my curriculum planner updates and yes I even have another giveaway coming up.

Free Minoan and Mycenaean Minibook for an Ancient Civilization Study

My year end co-op is finished, my New Bee workshops are done for the year and I am feeling all energetic and zippy.

Okay—-well almost because the kids said they could use a day or two to sleep in and my house still needs to be put back together. Just sounds better if I say the kids need it.

Today, I want to share with you the next minibook in our ancient civilization unit because we did our own lapbook too while we did the Great Empires Activity Study by Home School in the Woods.

On a side note: I was excited after searching high and low for some great clip art that I actually found some to purchase. You have to love those folks making donations to the Dynamic 2 Moms site because when they donate, I buy for you. I always try to be sure they get a Thank You from me.

Our reading focused on the Minoans and Mycenaean. The Minoans settled on the island of Crete at the same time as the rise of Mesopotamia and Egypt. This civilization too has royal palaces and paved roads.

In Minoan culture, bulls were significant and vaulting off the back of bulls was a sport. The Mycenaean were skilled at using gold, built the first Greek empire and were highly civilized even though all around them were barbarian tribes.

That is enough to understand about each culture if you are trying to keep it simple. I like simple.

This next minbook is a layered book about the Minoan and Mycenaean and all you do is staple on the side. As I have time you know I like to create minibooks that have text and create another set that is blank in case you want to fill in your own information. This one is no different. I have text on one set and the duplicate set is without text.

This allows you to use it with both, older and younger children, or to use the information given if you are in a bind for time. We do a lot of writing so I keep our minibooks easy because the focus is on the delight of learning not on penmanship. However, if you are working on penmanship you will enjoy having them blank. As you can see, lots of ways to use all of my minibooks

You know I told you that this lapbook is going to have many different civilizations in it. When I first started homeschooling, I focused on one civilization at a time and I still like to do that, but too after going through them with each kid or each year, sometimes its nice to have a quick glance at one time.  I think it helps younger children to get a panorama of history and its equally important for my older sons because it serves as a review. One reason also is if history is not your first love like it is for us, then looking at each ancient civilization with not so much detail keeps it from becoming overwhelming. I can’t imagine people not wanting to study history their every waking minute. Just saying.
