The name Mesopotamia actually means “land between rivers.” Mesopotamia was located in a region between two rivers—the Tigris River and the Euphrates River.
This area is part of what we now call the Middle East, mostly in modern-day Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran. Some of the ancient cities were Ur, Babylon, Nineveh, Uruk and Lagash.

Each city was like its own mini-country, called a city-state Cities often had their own kings and gods They sometimes traded with each other—and sometimes fought wars . Most cities were built near rivers for water and farming.
