This lapbook was created to introduce you briefly to my native land of Texas, a little history, some famous Texans, and a few fun facts.

Free Texas Homeschool Lapbook and Fun Homeschool Unit Study Ideas

Moreover, this unit will be expanded on in the future by covering other parts of Texas including the Republic of Texas

While the Alamo and how Texas became a Republic were much more significant topics to be learning as a little girl growing up in southern Texas, I was often fascinated by hearing such names as Ima Hogg and Ura Hogg.

But some things I learned where tall tales. For example, there was no Ura Hogg but there was an Ima Hogg.

Beyond the fun tidbits I learned growing up, I’m excited to share a starting point about the history of Texas.

Texas In Its Infancy

Besides the attack of the Alamo in March 1836 in San Antonio, Texas, other events contributed to the history of Texas.

Texas was a Mexican province and both U.S. and Mexico recognized the abundant land and fertile land.

However, the location of Texas was closer to the expanding United States.

Too through the years I’ve read in some places that Tejanos made up only about 4000 people in 1821.

Tejanos are persons of Mexican descent living in Texas. Today we call them Mexican American.

At the time there were not very many settlers to defend Texas against Mexico.

And Americans were allowed to settle in Texas.

So, in return for the cheap land grants Americans had to become Mexican citizens, accept the Mexican constitution and the religion of Roman Catholic.

As I learned in Texas history growing up this was a strategy Mexico used to try to convert American settlers as an asset by Mexico.

I guess that far back a rebellion was already in the works.

I have a free printable strawberries lapbook today. And you’ll love my Strawberry Unit Study, and Best Homeschool Unit Studies page.

Sharing some background information about strawberries and then sharing my free printable strawberries lapbook, I think all ages will enjoy this lapbook.

The strawberry is an herbaceous perennial and the perennial portion of the plant is the crown, which is the stem.

Free Printable Strawberries Lapbook and Fun Homeschool Unit Study Ideas

The crown produces roots, leaves, branch crowns and flowers.

First, a bit of history about the strawberry.

In Greek and Roman times, the strawberry was considered a wild plant.

In 1780, the first strawberry hybrid was developed in the United States.

And the strawberry was a symbol for Venus, the goddess of love because of its heart shape and red color.

There are many theories on how the strawberry got its name.

Some people believed that the name came from the practice of placing straw around the growing plants for protection.

Still others believe the name originated more than 1,000 years ago with the runner, which are horizontal branches at the base of the plant that produce new plants from buds at its tips.

And one more thought is that the name came from the Anglo-Saxon verb to strew (spread) and the fruit came to be known as streabergen, straberry, streberie, straibery, straubery, and finally, strawberry to the English.

Strawberry Facts

  • Strawberries are among the first fruit to ripen
  • They are called a berry, but they are not like any other berry, because their seeds are on the outside.
  • They are part of the rose family.
  • Strawberries are perennial which means they can grow back year after year.
  • Early settlers in Massachusetts enjoyed eating strawberries grown by local American Indians who cultivated them as early as 1643.

Strawberries are of the genus Fragaria in the rose family and are low herbaceous perennial plants with edible fruits.

I have a free toad and frog lapbook today. Be sure to look at my page Toads – Amphibians for more fun ideas and my lapbook ideas and best homeschool unit studies pages.

Amphibians include three major groups: 1. Salamanders, newts and sirens; and 2. Frogs and toads; and 3. Caecilians pronounced  (see-SIL-ee-ans).

Herpetology comes from the Greek word which means to creep. Some say herpetology is a jargon word and not even in the dictionary.

Free Toad and Frog Lapbook and Fun Homeschool Unit Study Ideas

Today, I have a fun frog lapbook which also includes facts about the differences between toads and frogs.

We did this unit study about frogs because we wanted to know the difference between a frog and toad.

The World Book Encyclopedia answers: “Most true toads have a broader, flatter body and darker, drier skin than do most true frogs. True toads are commonly covered with warts, but true frogs have smooth skin. Unlike most true frogs, the majority of true toads live on land. The adults go to water only to breed.”

But also look at more facts below about frogs.

10 Fun Frog Facts

  1. Frogs absorb water through their skin,
  2. Frogs can lay as many as 4,000 eggs.
  3. The eyes and nose of a frog are on top of its head so it can breathe and see when most of its body is under the water.
  4. Frogs need both water and land to live.
  5. A frog can change the color of its skin depending on its surroundings.
  6. Frogs have long back legs and webbed feet for jumping and swimming.
  7. Certain frogs can jump up to 20 times their own body length in a single leap.
  8. Frogs usually eat meat (bugs and worms) and swallow their food whole.
  9. Frogs and toads make our lives more bearable and reduce disease transmission because they consume large numbers of insects.
  10. Metamorphosis is a change in form from one stage to the next in the life history of an organism.

Too, look at some of these fun frog books.
