Free Greek Mythology Unit Study and Greece Lapbook & Fun Hands on LEGO Zeus

Today I have a Greek mythology unit study. Grab more ideas on my Ancient Greece Homeschool Unit Study, and on my best homeschool unit studies pages.

This unit study can be slanted anyway you want and it’s important for your student to understand to look at the world the way the Greeks did.

For example, there were scary gods and they believed they created humans.

A Greek mythology unit study is a great topic for middle schoolers.

It is interesting and exciting, filled with stories of gods and goddesses, mythical creatures, warriors, heroes, and ancient rituals.

Free Greek Mythology Unit Study and Greece Lapbook & Fun Hands on LEGO Zeus

It is one of my favorite middle and high school topics to cover.

You could put together a simple light study with a few retellings and the why of how Greek myths came to be or take a deep dive with your child and spend a month or more with these resources if they enjoy it.

Too, I have a simple LEGO tutorial for you to create your own Zeus brick-by-brick.

Or use it as inspiration to recreate your favorite Greek myths. Maybe a Medusa?

Or maybe a Chimaera? I tried to keep it as simple as possible, using only bricks that come in the basic sets like the large creative box so that you don’t need any special pieces to recreate it.

About the Greeks World View

The Greeks believed that the world was flat, but circular. At the center of the Universe was Greece.

Their world was divided by the Mediterranean, which in Latin means “Middle of the Lands”. The river Ocean flowed around the world in a clockwise motion.

12 gods considered Olympian gods.

There are 12 main or chief gods among the Greeks.

They are supposed to live on Mount Olympus, which was the highest mountain in Greece.

And they are known by two names, their Greek and Roman name.

Greek Mythology Unit Study Vocabulary

Also, look at some of these words to help your children differentiate between myths and legends.

  • myth – The word myth comes from the Greek word ‘mythos’ which means ‘to tell a story’. Myths are stories with a message. Normally the people telling them believe the myth to be true. They’re used to provide an explanation to the beginning of the world, nature, or explain human behavior.
  • legends – Legends are not true, but they are based on fact, such as a real person, a place, or an event.
  • folktale – Folktales are normally for entertainment and are usually set in a particular time.
  • ancient – There are varying opinions, but historians generally use the dates between 1000 BCE and the death of Alexander the Great, in 323 BCE to mean the ancient period. Then, explain the difference between B.C.E and C.E.
  • amphora – a large, tall urn that often has two handles; used for storing wine, corn, oil, and honey
  • Cronos – a first generation Titan (giant) who is the father of Zeus.
  • ambrosia – the food of the gods
  • nectar – the drink of the gods

More About Ancient Greece and Myths

Additionally, because your family may go down different rabbit trails, look at some of these objectives to help you plan your study.

  • Ancient Greeks worshipped many gods and goddesses.
  • The gods and goddesses of ancient Greece were believed to be immortal and to have supernatural powers, unlike humans.
  • Mount Olympus was the place believed by the Ancient Greeks to be the home of the gods.
  • Some of the mythical creatures are Pan, Pegasus, and Centaurs.

Then add some of these fun books and resources.

To celebrate National Wildlife Week, I have 6 world wildlife day activities to learn about African lions. Also, look at Easy Hands-on Science: Animal Camouflage Activity Hunt for more fun.

Lions are bold, beautiful, and powerful, making them fascinating subjects in books, movies, artwork, and in zoos.

Nearly all wild lions live in Africa.

6 World Wildlife Day Activities to Learn About African Lions

They prefer the grassy plains and open woodlands.

Grassy plains and open woodlands make an excellent hunting are and easy defense of a territory.

Also, they spend 16 to 20 hours a day sleeping and resting.

More African Wildlife Activities

  • Interesting Facts For Kids About Africa | Cute Handprint Cheetah
  • The Genus Panthera includes four species- lions, tigers, jaguars, and leopards. Panther refers to different animals including leopards, mountain lions, puma, cougars, or jaguars.
  • Young lions begin as cubs with spots and rosettes that fade as they mature.
  • A pride of lions is most often made of females and their cubs, as well as a male or small group of males.
  • Lions are listed as “vulnerable” on the threatened species list. Sadly, there are thought to be as few as 23,000 lions left in the wild.
  • A lion’s roar can be heard up to 5 miles away.
  • Lions live anywhere from 8-25 years in captivity, maybe only up to 10 in the wild.
  • There is such a thing as a hybrid lion. The offspring of a lion and a tigress is a liger, and the offspring of a tiger and a lioness is called a tigon, and a leopon is the offspring of a lion and a leopard.
  • Females do 90% of the hunting for the pride while males stay behind for protection.

If you want a wonderful book which covers lions and so much more wildlife the newest installment of Julia Rothmans anatomy series is a must-have addition to your bookshelf.

6 World Wildlife Day Activities to Learn About African Lions

Wildlife Anatomy has so much to offer to wildlife studies that it can stand on its own as your spine.

Also, add some of these other books for fun literature reads or to learn facts about lions.

Fun Resources to Learn About Lions

Add some of these fun books to learn about African Lions and their habitat and geography.

Wildlife Anatomy: The Curious Lives & Features of Wild Animals around the World

In Wildlife Anatomy, Rothman captures the excitement and distinctive attributes of wild animals around the world. The book is packed with hundreds of her charming, original illustrations, detailing the unique features of animals of the rainforest, desert, grasslands, oceans, and much more. From lions, bears, and zebras to monkeys, mongoose, bats, elephants, giraffes, hippos, and much more, Rothman's visual guide covers all the key features, right down to the anatomy of a lion's claw and a wild horse's hoof. All the illustrations are accompanied by labels, intriguing facts, and identifying details, such as: When is a Panther Not a Panther? and What Makes Aardvarks So Odd?

Bravelands #1: Broken Pride

A lion cast out from his pride. An elephant who can read the bones of the dead. A baboon rebelling against his destiny.

For generations, the animals of the African plains have followed a single rule: only kill to survive. But when an unthinkable act of betrayal shatters the peace, the fragile balance between predators and prey will rest in the paws of three unlikely heroes.

Born Free: A Lioness of Two Worlds

Joy Adamson's story of a lion cub in transition between the captivity in which she is raised and the fearsome wild to which she is returned captures the abilities of both humans and animals to cross the seemingly unbridgeable gap between their radically different worlds. Especially now, at a time when the sanctity of the wild and its inhabitants is increasingly threatened by human development and natural disaster, Adamson's remarkable tale is an idyll, and a model, to return to again and again

Library Lion

A lion starts visiting the local library but runs into trouble as he tries to both obey the rules and help his librarian friend.

Lions at Lunchtime

"Where are the lions?" Jack wonders when the Magic Tree House whisks him and his sister to the vast plains of Africa. Before he can find out, Annie starts to help hundreds of wildebeests cross a rushing river. Next they follow a honey of a bird and meet an awesome Masai warrior. Jack hopes any lions will just stay away. Jack is about to be very disappointed…

National Geographic Readers: Lions

Roar with lions in this exciting reader. Through beautiful and engaging photos, kids will learn all about these majestic big cats. This level 1 reader is carefully leveled for an early independent reading or read aloud experience, perfect to encourage the scientists and explorers of tomorrow!

A Lion to Guard Us

Featuring a heroine with faith, courage, and a great deal of grit, this acclaimed historical fiction novel portrays the realities faced by three children hoping to find a new home in an unknown land.

Next, look at some activities to celebrate learning about lions.

  • Celebrate Lions all week by snuggling up with a read-aloud every day.
  • Turn this little pride into a wonderful dramatic play addition, add it to a sensory bin, use them as drawing inspiration, or hide them around the house or outdoors, and play “hot and cold”.
  • Open your atlas and find Africa, this DK First Atlas was a great resource for a large map with details and photos.
  • 9 Grab some popcorn and settle down, and watch The Lion King together.

World Wildlife Day Activities Create LEGO Lion Portrait

Next, do this easy hands-on lion activity.

You can use whatever LEGO you have on hand at home, but we did this using only the bricks found in this Large Creative Brick Basic Box to make it easier to find the pieces we needed.

However, feel free to encourage your child to substitute and make it work for them.

 You will need:

  • Small LEGO Baseplate
  • Yellow and brown LEGO
  • LEGO eyes
  • Lion picture for inspiration.

Directions:

Build the basic face shape in the center of the baseplate by starting just below the centerline, creating a 4×6 rectangle with yellow bricks.

Place one 2×6 centered underneath and 2 single yellow bricks at the top on either side for ears.

6 World Wildlife Day Activities to Learn About African Lions

Create the lion’s mane by filling in all the way around the yellow basic face shape with brown bricks.

6 World Wildlife Day Activities to Learn About African Lions

Add two eyes.

Place one 2×2 yellow brick in the center for a muzzle, top with a single brown round stud for the nose.

Put a 2×6 brick under the center of the main.

6 World Wildlife Day Activities to Learn About African Lions

That’s it, your fantastic lion is ready to be admired.

Encourage older children to build something more complex, either a more detailed portrait or even perhaps a 3D lion laying out surveying the grasslands like this one.

How to Easily Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO

March 3, 2019 | 1 Comment
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

How to garden plan with kids using LEGO is a way to sneak in some learning. Check out more ideas too at Easy Seed and Gardening Unit Study for Kids (Middle – Upper Elementary).

If I can take a subject or unit of study and apply it to LEGO creations it is going to be a big hit.

My kids, like so many others, love to create and build with LEGO so it is just a great hands-on natural extension to learning.

How to Easily Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO

This time I applied it to a study on Garden Planning.

This application gave us science, math, handwriting, fine motor skills development, critical thinking, and so much more.

We will definitely be using LEGO again as the core of our learning.

You don’t even have to be planning a real garden, this is still the perfect way for them to dig a little deeper into the concept of gardening no matter what size space you live in or grow in.

After determining how many feet your real garden will be and whether you want it square or rectangle you are ready to move on to designing it with LEGO.

We worked on our garden planning with LEGO in two different ways and I am going to share both of them with you so you can choose one or do both!

1 LEGO GARDEN SUPPLIES How to Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO

Gardening Activities For Kids

If you haven’t started your LEGO journey yet this, LEGO Classic Medium Creative Brick Box is a great box to begin with!

For this one, it was a fun fully hands-on activity that required no writing from the kids (my sons favorite).

I love how it gets their creativity flowing and provides them with a 4D visual of how our garden might look.

2 lego garden planning 1 LEGO GARDEN SUPPLIES How to Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO

To begin, gather up a flat LEGO base plate in whatever size you like.

I had two kids doing it and needed to display them for a while in our classroom so we used 5 x 5 base plates in the interest of space.

LEGO Garden Activity

Then, grab a bunch of LEGO in all different sizes and colors, we opted for 2 x 2 bricks and smaller, as well as LEGO plants.

If you don’t have many plants LEGO and want to include them you can purchase a poly bag with a variety of plants.

How to Easily Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO | Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Single round studs and square 1 peg bricks can be used to create many items for your garden.

You can see on our garden that we mixed in both and it still looks great. 2 x 2 bricks make great pumpkins, eggplants, tomato plants, etc..

Explain to the kids that while planting it is especially important to leave room for your plants to grow.

Use the pegs on top of your base plate to represent square feet, you can use however many you like but just keep it throughout to represent the scale.

We chose to use 3 x 3 to equal one square foot. Now as you “plant” with the LEGO keep that in mind, research how large space each of your intended plants’ needs.

How to Easily Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO

Once you know your square foot and the needs of each plant you can begin constructing your lego garden.

Work in rows.

Place the plants you create, remember to check for plants that should and shouldn’t be placed next to each other.

4 LEGO GRAPH FINAL How to Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO

Now when you are done you have a fun visual for your real garden.

And a pretty display piece for your school room, living room, or wherever you would like to put it!

This version combines the fun of LEGO and some writing and graphing skills in a mixed media approach to creating a garden with LEGO.

I like this one because it gives the kids a chance to develop other skills and also it is so easy to change up and  if you laminate your graph paper once colored it can be used again and again with LEGO to create new spaces.

GRAPH How to Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO

Grab some graph paper, smaller lego pieces, and something to color with.

We used 1” graph paper because the large squares are perfect for representing 1 square foot.

LEGO Bricks for Kids Learning

Choose your desired garden size and color in those squares, brown of course is best for creating “soil”. We created a 5×6 plot to make our graph paper vegetable garden plan on.

You can do the whole page if you wish, and use as many squares as you want to represent your one square foot.

The Basement Workshop Store

Decide what crops you will plant and choose small LEGO bricks accordingly.

Demonstrate to your child how to place the rows, explain the placement and how to allow room for growth.

6 LEGO GRAPH ROWS How to Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO

Let them design a garden that they would like to help build and once they are done have them label their crops.

7 LEGO GARDEN FINAL How to Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO

Our little red studs are radishes which can be crowded together a little more than something like say… squash plants which need a lot more space around them.

Leave some blank rows for paths.

How to Easily Garden Plan With Kids Using LEGO

Both of these ideas can be photographed and added to your garden journal or used as part of your end of the year evaluation in your homeschool portfolio.
