We’re taking a leftover pool noodle from summer and creating a fun pitcher plant craft to demonstrate how this amazing plant works. Also, look at my free lapbook and Carnivorous Plants unit study.

In tropical and subtropical regions of the world, you can find pitcher plants.

Those places are warm and have humid climates that pitcher plants need to thrive.

Pitcher plants and other carnivorous plants are unable to attain enough nitrogen from the soil where they grow.

This is an important requirement for plants.

How to Make a Fun Pitcher Plant Craft With Pool Noodles

So, in order to survive they have adapted by trapping and absorbing insects which provides them with nitrogen and phosphorus.

They have several different ways that help them attract and trap bugs.

For example, they have pitcher shaped leaves, bug enticing nectar, slippery walls, and enzymes.

While it’s kind of gross it is really neat and fascinating!

Pitcher-shaped leaves. The pitcher-shaped leaves of pitcher plants are designed to trap insects.

It has leaves that are brightly colored. Too, they have a slippery surface, making it difficult for insects to climb out once they fall in.

Sweet nectar-Pitcher plants produce a sweet nectar that serves as bait for insects.

This nectar is located at the rim of the pitcher and near the opening, enticing insects to investigate.

Slippery walls. There are tiny, downward-pointing hairs in the inner walls. This makes it slippery and difficult for insects to climb out.

These hairs act like a one-way door, allowing insects to enter the pitcher but preventing them from escaping.

Digestive enzymes- Pitcher plants produce digestive enzymes that help them break down and absorb the nutrients from the insects they capture.

These enzymes are secreted into the liquid at the bottom of the pitcher and break down the insect’s body over time.

10 Incredible Facts About The Pitcher Plant

  1. Pitcher Plants can be houseplants. They do best as terrariums with adequate sunlight and mildly acidic soil.
  2. Pitcher plants can be found in various habitats. They can be found in rainforests, swamps, bogs, and even some coastal areas. And they can be found growing on the ground, on trees, or even on rocks.
  3. Pitcher plants are carnivorous plants, this means that they trap and eat insects and other small animals to obtain nutrients.
  4. They have modified leaves that evolved into pitcher-shaped structures, perfectly designed to capture prey.
  5. The inside of the pitcher is lined with downward-pointing hairs and glands that secrete a slippery liquid. This liquid attracts insects with its sweet aroma but makes it difficult for them to climb out once they fall in.
  6. Once an insect falls into the pitcher, it drowns in the liquid. Then it is broken down by enzymes and bacteria, releasing nutrients that the pitcher plant can absorb.
  7. There are approximately 170 known species of pitcher plants. Each has unique characteristics.
  8. Pitcher plants are found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, with the greatest diversity being in Southeast Asia.
  9. Some pitcher plants, such as the Rafflesiana pitcher plant, can grow to be over 10 feet tall, which makes them the largest carnivorous plants in the world.
  10. Pitcher plants play a very important role in the ecosystems by helping to control the population of insects, like mosquitoes, which can carry diseases.

6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

August 6, 2024 | Leave a Comment
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

Today, I’m sharing 6 gross facts about mold.

It is gross. And we definitely don’t want to take a bite of something that has green fuzz growing on it.

But it makes for a fascinating, quick and easy experiment for kids.

Even if you’ve done something similar with younger kids, you can change the variables.

And it adds a little more challenge to the simple experiment.

If you don’t already have a science notebook, consider getting one.

It’s a great place to record your hypothesis, process, and outcome of any science experiments that you do.

6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

A simple composition book is perfect to use for the year.

It can also serve as part of your records for the end of the year assessment if you need them, so it has varied benefits.

You will first want to answer the question -What is mold?

Mold is a type of fungus that thrives in damp, dark environments.

It can be found in homes, schools, workplaces, and other buildings.

Mold spores, which are tiny, lightweight reproductive structures, float through the air and can be inhaled.

When inhaled, these mold spores can cause a variety of health problems, including allergies, asthma, and infections.

Too, mold can contaminate food and other items in the home, making them unsafe for consumption or use.

Growth of mold is influenced by several factors, including moisture, temperature, and the presence of organic matter.

And mold can grow on a wide range of materials, including paper, wood, fabric, and food. It is particularly fond of damp, porous surfaces, such as drywall and ceiling tiles.

Spores of mold are always present in the air, but they become a problem when they start to grow and multiply.

This can happen when there is an increase in moisture levels, such as after a flood or water leak.

Also, mold thrives in warm, humid environments, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Some molds are used to make medicines and foods, such as penicillin and blue cheese.

So, while not all molds are good, there are many beneficial molds that play an important role in our world.

Books for Kids About Mold

Next, add a few books to your study of mold.

Additionally, look at these facts about mold.

6 Gross Facts About Mold

  1. Mold belongs to the fungi family alongside yeasts and mushrooms, there are over 200,000 species of fungus total.
  2. Found almost anywhere, mold can grow on virtually any substance, if there is some moisture present.
  3. Mold comes in many colors- it can appear in various colors, including green, black, white, yellow, and orange.
  4. Exposure to mold can cause allergic reactions and respiratory distress in some people, especially those with compromised immune systems, asthma, allergies, or emphysema.
  5. In contrast, some mold is good and has a valuable purpose. Mold ages and flavors cheese, they are used in bread making, fermenting liquor, producing soy sauce, penicillin, and even in the manufacturing of citric acid used to flavor soft drinks.
  6. Because of the heavy processing, mold does not like fast food. It will not grow on them. They will shrivel and age but not show signs of molding.

Check out this quick video What is mold? Lesson for kids to learn a little more.

Finally, look at this growing mold experiment.

Growing Mold Experiment – Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

You will need:

  • 4 petri dishes
  • bread
  • Tape
  • Science notebook
  • Magnifying glass
6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

The first thing you want to do is grab some inexpensive petri dishes.

They’re pretty cheap and reusable and if your kids like hands-on.

You get a lot of bang for your buck using them for different things.

Next, you want to have your child make a hypothesis of which bread sample is going to mold the fastest.

For example, they can write this may look like…

I think the bread in the dark bread box is going to mold the fastest or…

I believe that the moist bread is going to mold quickly.

Remember, this is just a hypothesis so there are no answers.

It is just a step in the scientific process.

Now you will want to wash your hands.

Then cut one slice of bread into four pieces (or however many different variables you would like to have).

6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

Place a small piece of bread into each petri dish and cover with a lid.

6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

For this experiment, we chose to put one in the sunny window, one moist on the counter, one in the refrigerator, and one in a cool dark place like a bread, box drawer, or pantry.

Take a piece of washi tape.

Write on it the location or variable and place it on the top off to the side so that you can still view the bread well.

6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

Place each petri dish in its appropriate spot.

6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

Check your bread at the same time every day.

You could also look at it with a magnifying glass or even under a microscope so that you might be able to view the tiniest of changes.

6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

For the damp piece we used a straw to add a couple drops of water to it each day.

Use their science journal to note any changes in each of the specimens.

6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

We could not detect any after 24 hours

6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

Or 48 hours

6 Gross Facts About Mold | Easy Comparison Activity For Kids

72 hours …

You know how when you don’t want something to mold it seems to happen overnight?

But of course, this time it took so long to start forming mold.

We had those dishes sitting for 9 days before literally in one night the moist piece was nearly covered in gross mold.

Science is amazing!

Facts About Seashells

  • Sea shells have been used by more than just creatures as homes.
  • They have been used as currency. Also they are used as tools for scraping out bowls or boats, and as part of weapons.
  • A seashell isn’t an animal, rather it is a portable home for a wide variety of animals.
  • It was once part of a sea creature’s protective outer layer. The creature dies and the body disappears. Just the shell is left behind. But there is one exception, the hermit crab, which is a crustacean.
  • There are two main shell types- The first is a smooth, round design. This design makes it easy for animals living inside to move quickly over the ocean floor to avoid predators. The second type of shell is covered with spikes and irregular surfaces. This type is found in tropical waters and the uninviting design of the shell is the protection.

How to Make an Ocean-Inspired Seashell Necklace

You can’t tell what color the uv beads will be until the sun has changed them.

So, you can either make your necklace and let it be a surprise or take them outside and change them so you get your choice of color.

You will need:

  • UV Beads
  • Seashells
  • Stretchy jewelry string
  • Small tipped screw
  • Small hammer

First, choose your shell.

With the concave side facing down, place the screw tip where you would like the hole and tap gently with the hammer.

If your shell is weak it may crack.

But a sturdy shell will give way with gentle taps just where the pressure is applied.

Once there is a small hole, flip the shell back and forth, twisting the screw gently to widen it just until it is big enough for your string to go through.

You can leave your shell plain or add a little bit of gold around the edges to give it a little extra special touch.l

How to Make an Ocean-Inspired Sea Shell Necklace | 8 Summer Beach Crafts

Cut a length of stretchy necklace string longer than you need and knot a uv bead into the center of it.

How to Make an Ocean-Inspired Sea Shell Necklace | 8 Summer Beach Crafts

Run the two open ends of the string through the hole in the shell, nestling the bead in the center.

Now at this point you can either keep it simple with just the shell and single bead or add beads up either side of the string.

Adjust the necklace to the length you like, knot the ends several times and then cut off the excess.

Next, look at these facts you can use for your chicken life cycle worksheet.

The Chicken Life Cycle

Stage 1: Embryonic Development

The life cycle begins with a fertilized egg, where the embryo undergoes a series of complex processes.

During the first week, the embryo’s organs and tissues begin to form, including the heart, brain, and eyes.

By the end of the third week, the embryo is fully formed and resembles a miniature chicken, complete with feathers and a beak.

Stage 2: Hatching

Around the 21st day of incubation, the chick begins to break out of its shell using a specialized egg tooth.

This process, known as hatching, can take several hours or even days.

Once the chick emerges, it is covered in wet feathers and has a large yolk sac attached to its belly, providing nourishment for the first few days of life.

Stage 3: Brooding

After hatching, the chick relies on its mother’s warmth and protection during the brooding period, which typically lasts for several weeks.

The hen provides shelter, food, and teaches the chicks essential survival skills, such as foraging and predator avoidance.

Stage 4: Growth and Development

As the chick grows, its feathers begin to dry and fluff up, transforming it from a fuzzy ball into a feathered bird.

Finally, at around 6 weeks of age, the chick’s juvenile feathers are replaced by adult feathers, and it gradually develops its full adult plumage.

Stage 5: Sexual Maturity

By around 16-20 weeks of age, chickens reach sexual maturity and become capable of reproducing.

Hens begin to lay eggs, and roosters develop the ability to fertilize them.

The reproductive cycle of chickens is influenced by factors such as daylight hours, nutrition, and breed.

Stage 6: Adulthood

Adult chickens typically live for around 5-8 years, depending on the breed and individual health.

During this stage, chickens continue to lay eggs (in the case of hens).

First, decide how much of the 21-day egg cycle you would like to recreate.

We opted to just go for a chicken, an egg, a fertilized egg, an egg with a developing embryo, and a hatched chick.

Take air dry clay in golf ball sized clumps and form it into each stage.

To smooth it out you can add a little water to your fingertips.

You can use clay tools, or if you don’t have them, forks, wooden craft sticks, toothpicks and other household items to create feathers and other details in the clay.
