Today, our American History through the Life of Wyatt Earp that we started more than a month ago I continue with some free notebooking pages. Also, look at Free American History Lapbook The Old West Through the Life of Wyatt Earp.

I had my first son move back to the states, a graduation party for Mr. Awesome 2015 and a trip back to the states. And I still thought I was going to keep on homeschooling Tiny? Insane!

I tout all the time about not being super mom and to slow down for life changing moments in homeschooling, but I still tried to go on as normal. What is normal anyway?

I’m back to reality and am ready to kick off our school year soon.

Because our unit study is a focus on key events from modern American history, I prepared two notebooking pages that Tiny will be using this next week to go along with the minibooks he has already done.

ABOUT WYATT EARP

Though we had read about the life of Wyatt Earp in our history magazine, I guess it really wasn’t until we honed in on the year he was born, which was 1829 and when he died, which was 1929 that I realized what amazing events he must have witnessed.

The frontier was still wild and untamed while he was a boy.

Conflicts between the US Army and Native Americans were going on until the end of the 1800s.

He was a teenager when the American Civil War started and probably knew first hand the tragedy of all the lives lost.

Then the beginning of the 1900s ushered in the opening of the Panama Canal and the US going to war again, but now, it was a much more global war – World War I.

Wonder what he thought as the US forged ahead into the modern world?

Tiny will be doing some research on his own since the events I have on the notebooking pages are significant key events and there is plenty of information both in our encyclopedia and online for him to read.

I am not looking for him to write a research paper with the pages, but I am looking for him to imagine, wonder and step back into time to see events possibly through the eyes of Wyatt Earp.

Both notebooking pages have 4 key historical events on them.

Have your child research the event, write in the date and then add a few facts about that key event.

On the right margin of each page is a box where they can write about life during the 1800s and life during the 1900s, which will help them to focus about something that draws them in about this time in history.

I am finding this unit study to be quite helpful to help Tiny learn about sweeping events in modern American history and still learn about a person in history that captures his attention. Win-win.

Gunfight at O.K. Corral – American History through the Life of Wyatt Earp

We continued on with some writing about the gunfight at the OK Corral. Also, look at Free American History Lapbook The Old West Through the Life of Wyatt Earp.

We are focusing on our study of American history through the life of Wyatt Earp.

The gunfight at O.K. Corral is probably one of the most legendary events in American history but it only lasted about thirty seconds long.

On October 26, 1881 in Tombstone, Arizona, a gunfight started at O.K. Corral.

Close to 3:00 p.m., three lawmen, Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp, and brothers Virgil and Morgan went looking for cattle thieves, Ike and Billy Clanton along with the McLaurys.

Too, the gunfight wasn’t at the corral but was at a vacant lot. After the gunfight broke out Tom McLaury and Billy Clanton were dead.

Public opinion was divided as to whom started the fight.

Whatever the facts about the most famous gunfight in American history, it certainly is an exciting enough topic for Tiny to summarize and write about.

So I created the minibook Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

Too, this a popular enough topic in American history that there are many references for your child to research.

Have your child fill in the information he has gathered.

Fold in half vertically and glue the cover on the front outside.

Too, the founding of Tombstone, Arizona is an interesting read and especially about how it got its name.

So I created a mini flip book about the founding of Tombstone, Arizona.

Again, there is no shortage of websites about this famous place in American history.

Research about the founding of Tombstone, Arizona and about Ed Schieffelin.

Have your child write in his research at the bottom insert piece and then glue that into the minibook cover (pictured on top).

Fold over and keep because you know we are not finished.

We have several more minibooks coming as we plod along on this unit study.

Since we already have done a few hands-on activities about the everyday life, we will be working on minibooks next about life during the time of Wyatt Earp and we are ready to write up some quick facts about Earp also.

We are really loving the angle we took on this unit study to learn more about American history. I love it because Tiny is engaged and he loves it because he can write about guns. (okay, okay)

Learning American History through the Life of Wyatt Earp Part 2

Continuing on with our learning American history, I have some hands-on history today. Also, look at Free American History Lapbook The Old West Through the Life of Wyatt Earp.

Hands-on history as we are learning American history through the life of Wyatt Earp, we did one more easy peazy activity for our unit study opening.

Learning American History through the Life of Wyatt Earp Part 2

We made soap.

Now I would have loved to have made one of these cutesy, full of fragrance, pink heart shaped soaps, but I have never been able to get one of my boys to make soap like that.

So I have to settle for the science of making home made soap, which is to make suds.

Too, this recipe calls for baking soda but baking soda is not plentiful here in Ecuador because they won’t sell it. It’s almost like it’s banned here in this country.

I had to substitute with baking powder.

We did learn some chemistry with this because we learned we can substitute baking powder for baking soda but you can’t substitute baking soda when you need baking powder.

Easy ingredients for making soap.

1/4 cup salad oil. I just used what I had.
1/4 quarter cup baking soda. We had to substitute with 3x the amount of baking soda.
Glass jar.

Add oil and soda to a pan and warm it on low heat and stir.

When it thickens, remove from heat and let it cool. Then add 1 tablespoon of mixture with 2 cups of hot tap water in the jar.

Shake until you see suds.

Though it may seem like simple science, it was good for Tiny to understand how the things we take for granted today like bubbles and suds just did not exist then.

Of course this would be even more meaningful if we had ashes, but then again reading about making soap in the olden days was a good reading assignment to do on his own.

Next, we were ready to start our unit study so I decided to use a history magazine as our spine.

As a side note, one of my very favorite history magazines, which was Learning through History that we used a lot on our unit studies, stopped printing issues.

I have most of the issues but after they stopped printing, I started receiving another subscription from History Magazine, though it wasn’t for kids.

HANDS-ON HISTORY FOR KIDS

I do have to look it over when we get it, but because the boys were getting older, I wanted something that wasn’t just bare bones history.

So for this unit study we are using one of the articles out of our history magazine about Wyatt Earp.

Also because it is for adults, it helps to nurture a love of history for kids who are advanced in reading too.

After he read from the magazine, I had a website that I wanted us to look at together because it is the direction we needed to go in, which is to add some science and a bit of geography.

Though Wyatt Earp is known for his famous gun fight at the OK Corral, he lived most of his life traveling and living in the desert and Southwest area as a lawman.

Check out this website Wyatt Earp Desert Lawman, which talks about Earp living most of his life in the deserts of the Southwest.

Then, even though we are finished with our science book for the year, I love to use free resources I already have to build my unit studies.

So I knew that I had a free science magazine that talked about animals and ecosystems of the Southwest.

I shared that link with you too before, which is Free Science Magazines and the science magazine is Animals and Ecosystems of the Southwestern United States.

Be sure you download it because your child will need it to fill in the minibooks about the desert.

Though hot temperatures and cacti come to mind, Tiny found that a few other things are characteristic of this area of the United States.

Learning about the Quechua language and culture has been one fascinating aspect about us living here in South America.

So when I was asked to use the ebook, A Child’s Life in the Andes by Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannous (yes she is Quechua), I was delighted to use a resource that could capture some of the things we have been experiencing while living here.

Music of the Andes for Kids

Quechua is the language of the Andes. Though I knew Spanish was a dominating language here, I had no idea that the ancient language of Quechua was alive and thriving.

The Quechua language had its start in the Andes Mountain in Cuzco, Peru, which was the ancient Inca empire.

The empire was huge and ruled over many parts of present day countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and here in Ecuador.

When we moved here, I didn’t realize that many of the parades that I saw and foods we have tried have Quechua origins.

Tickled to be able to find a resource that had some quick tips about South America along with some fun hands-on history and geography, I was eager to get started using it.

The ebook A Child’s Life in the Andes is a 35 page pdf that gives a glance at the people of the Andes.

Included with the ebook are 5 cancioncitas or (little songs) that we loved listening to.

Right away, with the first song Alturas (high mountains), we heard some of the traditional Andean musical instruments like zamponas (panpipes), flutes and rainsticks.

Listening to the music, from a traditional folksong to a carnival song is really the highlight of this sweet little gem.

We started off using it by listening to all the songs and read the ebook, which gives background information about each song.

A Child’s Life
Animals
Food
Language
Coloring pages, make your your own activities and a word search puzzle.

Depending our mood, we like to skip around when using new resources and this one was no different.
Tiny wanted to do the word search puzzle next because it had a Quechua word we have heard while living here which is YAW and it means Hey.

From there we moved on to including a fun and easy hands-on wind instrument called a Zamponas.

With just a few household items and a few minutes, Tiny made the easy wind instrument called the zamponas.

He ended up really liking that easy musical instrument and I actually got my shy guy to try out the instrument while I recorded him for a few seconds.

There are 8 coloring pages in the ebook, which are animals indigenous to South America.

Of course being from Texas and thinking that armadillos are only critters that hail from Texas (aren’t they), we were surprised to know that many are here in South America.

The body of the armadillo is used for the body of the charango, which is a stringed musical instrument here in South America that looks like a guitar.

Then we had never heard of Chapchas, which is a very unique rattle because it is made from the toenails of goat or sheep.

We really have to look for one while we are here now that our curiosity was piqued.

I think you will really love A Child’s Life in the Andes if you :

Want to use it like a supplement to a unit study on South America;
Want your children to appreciate the music of South America;
Have elementary age children;
Have children who like to learn hands-on without activities that are complicated;
Want a few sweeping details about life in the Andes; and

Today, I have rounded up 15 hands-on history ideas for middle school kids studying the French and Indian War of 1754 – 1763. Hands-on history not only sparks excitement for continuing to study a topic, but learning sticks because your child is doing and making a connection to the past. Too, it is always my aim to continue to flesh out my unit studies and add more hands-on history activities as I find them.

Okay, I actually have more than 15 hands-on history ideas for studying about the French and Indian War.

This topic is not an easy one to teach at lower levels and most resources are at the high school level.

However, I am tickled to share this free resource from the National Park Service which I came across after I completed our first study of the French and Indian War.

It has several downloads and you want to be sure and grab each unit because they are awesome.

15 Hands-on History Ideas for Middle School Kids

One and Two.
Bio Bingo – This free download at NPS has a Bingo game about key events and your student can create biography cards on major characters.

Three.
Nearly everyone in the army would carry flint and steel for starting fires. Check out how to make a flint & steel fire starter. (adult supervision)

Four.
Baskets were made by woman and had many uses. Check out how to make a coiled bowl.

Also, we love the hands-on ideas from Home School in the Woods. Look at their American Revolution hands-on unit which covers the French & Indian War.

Five.
Europeans gave pipe tomahawks as gifts to Indian leaders. With adult supervision, this tomahawk could be made, by an older teen, but there is also an easy cardboard tomahawk . Great activity for a younger learner.

Six.
A compass was an important tool for navigating in North America. Check out my post – homemade compass.

Seven.
Learn about powder horns and create your own.

Eight.
Check out these French and Indian War images which can be used for a fun writing activity.

Nine.
How To Make An Easy Ink pot & Quill Pen with Berry Ink.

Make a tricorn hat.

Eleven.
Learn how to make a beaver hat.

Twelve.
Make a leather pouch. Even though this link is a puzzle pouch, I like it because it has a template for the pouch.

Then here is an easier pouch for a younger child.

Thirteen.
Make an authentic turtle rattle and then there is another version on this same site for a younger child too.

Fourteen.
This is cool to build a fort fence at your house.

Fifteen.
Create your own Iroquois wampum belt with string and beads.

Also, prior to The French and Indian War, the Iroquois Confederacy was formed and tried to stay neutral for most of the war.

To flesh out a study on The French and Indian War, be sure to check out my Iroquois Confederacy Unit Study and Lapbook.

Have your student memorize some of the George Washington’s Rules of
Good Behavior close to 1746 , read the story of Mary Jemison who was captured by Indians amidst the war between the British and the French and read the speech of Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa tribe addressing a gathering of Ottawa, Huron, and Potawatomie Indians, May 5, 1763.

Here is a printable crossword puzzle on the French and Indian War. Click printable .pdf at the bottom. Be sure to the answer key too.

Make a bear claw necklace.

Look at this older site, the Fort at No. 4 for postcards to print for a writing exercise or to make it art, learn about colonial money, colonial tools, do an acrostic poem, and a map of the area.
