I have the color choices for the 2022 to 2023 homeschool planning schedules. Build your homeschool schedules from this form.

Long range planning is key to sticking to homeschool, so I know you’ll love getting these color choices early.

Homeschool Planning Schedules

Remember, I create both academic and physical year calendars to help you build your homeschool planning schedules.

Although the homeschool planning schedule calendars may seem similar to plain calendars, let me assure you they are not.

I create 3 different sets of calendars each year.
One set is a homeschool planning your year calendar;
one set set is a regular calendar for reference;
and one set is a two page per month calendar which have big boxes for writing in.

When you take a closer look, you’ll see that each calendar has a different purpose.

Dynamic Homeschool Planning Schedule

First, keep in mind the PERMANENT home for this homeschool planning form each year is Step 5a. Choose Unique Forms JUST for You.

Look at the features of this hardworking dynamic homeschool planning schedule calendar. The dynamic homeschool planning schedule calendar

  • has all 12 months on one page so if you school year round, you can still track;
  • is a calendar where you want to highlight weeks you plan to homeschool and mark out weeks you take off;
  • is used to track each day and total weeks by writing down;
  • can be used to prior plan detailed, loosely, or note on it as you school each day;
  • has a comprehensive key box at the bottom of the form for you to note things like first day of school, holidays, quarters, and goals for days and weeks to homeschool.

Important Note: For this school year I went back to starting the forms on July and end June. 

Of course, it doesn’t matter when this form begins because you can start planning with the first month you begin.

As a side note, plain calendars I create (okay, they are not so plain) are just for noting dates and for your reference.

I don’t create them with room to write appointments on them OR to track your school.

Free and Useful Editable Movie Report For Homeschool

I’m so excited to share this free printable editable movie report to compliment the free Homeschool Planner and 7 Step DIY Homeschool Planner and other learning forms I have here.

Although I feel we need to teach our kids how to write a book report or two, some of the same learning concepts can be done assigning a movie report.

Don’t misunderstand me, I didn’t assign a lot of books reports.

However, a required book report or two helped my kids to prepare for literary analysis in high school.

The same can be done with an oral report. It’s great to have choices is my point.

So I think you’ll love adding this free editable movie report to your language arts curriculum.

Look at how I created it:

  • There are two versions of the same copy. One version has color and if you need to preserve your ink, one version is grayscale.
  • Both versions are editable. If you want your kids to practice his beautiful penmanship, just print without using the editable fields.
  • If your child prefers to use the editable form, type to fill in and then print.
  • Also, I created more of a book-ish type of report meaning I encourage writers through my form to think deeper than what is happening on the screen. That is how we want to sneak in a bit of critical thinking through the fun of watching a movie.

Movie Review Form

Movie reports are not only fun, but have a way of reviving a love lost in writing or analyzing.

Too, if a child has special needs, he may not able to read without great difficulty or write well. Still, he certainly can be encouraged to express himself in beautiful language.

An editable movie report form can help him to jot down fascinating facts and still think about the elements of literature.

Through a movie, his thoughts can be formed in a visual way instead of reading the pages of a book.

In addition, on the last page I have a place for a writer to draw his or her favorite scene/s.

This page is unnumbered so that your writer can decide if he wants to illustrate more than one scene and print the same page multiple times.

On the other hand, he can divide the last page into 4 squares using his pencil and illustrate more than one scene on the one page.

Your writer decides if he wants to illustrate one scene per page or various scenes on one page, or print one page per scene.

I love options while teaching and I know you do too.

Also, adding the unnumbered last page in this download allows you the freedom of including your youngest learner. He may be at the drawing pictures stage right now.

This way your youngest learner is part of language arts instruction for the day.

Another important component I added to the form to help with older learners is a comparison between the movie and the book.

Because this section simply asks the child to compare the two, you decide which literary elements of the book and which movie parts you want your child to compare.

Lastly, the movie report shares some of the same literary elements or the elements of fiction included in a book report like:

  • plot;
  • setting; and
  • characters.

Another important distinction I made in this form because my kids had a hard time with it too is making the distinction between the plot and the theme.

Teach with Movies

So I have both a Main Idea (more like the theme) section and Plot so that your kids can learn the difference too. It helps them to think critically when filling out these parts.

Some kids do understand the difference between plot and theme until the teens years which I find is normal.

And filling out the section about what is advertised as the main idea about the movie, versus what are the plot and theme (Main Idea on form) can lead to many interesting observations about the movie.

Analyzing literature is something I’ve tried to make fun in our house; analyzing movies is another way to bring fun to language arts.

I have the color choices for the 2021 to 2022 homeschool planning forms ready today.

I don’t try to separate the two anymore because being outside or studying nature has a way to revive and renew you and your child’s sluggish feelings.

1. Nature-based learning reduces over stimulation.

It’s easy to fall into a rut of being inside and doing book work. It’s simple. Kids can be over stimulated by being contained indoors.

2. Nature-based learning increases motivation, curiosity, and creativity.

As educators we also can fall int our own rut. We may think that unless we can put a letter grade beside a skill, it may not be important.

Nature has a way of shifting focus and increasing creativity.

When a kid can study the patterns in nature, not to mention see the colors and sights it gives them a natural shift in focus. A shift in focus spurs creativity.

Creativity spills over into academic skills that we can put a letter grade to like writing and math.

3. Nature-based learning can reduce anxiety and stress.

Let’s face it. Homeschooling can be just as stressful for our kids as it can be for us as the educator.

We know it shouldn’t be like and in our anxiousness we can over push.

Studying nature allows our kids to step back and focus on the natural wonders of the world.  There is something calm about watching the waves whip up onto the shore. It can reduce stress and clear your kids’ mind.

There are more benefits to nature-based learning or being outside so I know you’ll love these free nature-based unit studies to add to your curriculum.

Hands-on Ancient Phoenicia: Alphabet Clay Tablet Craft

The study of ancient civilizations is one of the most interesting parts of history to me, especially Ancient Phoenicia. I’ve enjoyed teaching about ancient civilizations and their contributions that have led to some of the great inventions and resources that we still use today.

Hands-on Ancient Phoenicia: Alphabet Clay Tablet Craft. Your kids will love this easy hands-on history craft if you’re looking to study the Ancient Phoenicians.

In this lesson, kids can learn about the ancient Phoenicians and the alphabet that they developed as well as creating their own clay tablet with Phoenician writing.

About the Phoenicians

Phoenicia was actually a group of city-states. It was established in the area that we now know as Syria, Lebanon, and northern Israel.

These city states began forming around 3200 BC and around 1500 BC, Two of it’s most well-known city states were Tyre and Sidon. In Scripture, Phoenicia is the area known as Canaan.

The Phoenicians were an ocean people. Phoenicia was a very popular place for trading and manufacturing. They worshiped many gods and goddesses.

One was their god of the sea- Yamm, and they put horses heads on their mighty ships to honor him. They were known for the manufacturing of the powerful ships, for glass-making, and for the making of their famous purple dye.

The name Phoenicia comes from the Greek word for purple. In fact, they were sometimes called the “purple people” because the dye they made would stain their skin purple.

The famous historian Herodotus gives Phoenicia the credit for the invention of the alphabet.

They supposedly brought the alphabet to Greece sometime before the 8th century BC.

Most of the western languages that we know today came from the Phoenician alphabet.

And the Phoenician city of Byblos where papyrus was manufactured and traded gave the Bible its name- through the Greek words Ta Biblia, “the books”.

The Phoenician Alphabet

The Phoenician alphabet that was later passed on to other countries and cultures developed around the 15th century BC. Before that, the Phoenicians used a form of cuneiform writing.

The alphabet spread so rapidly and to so many places because the Phoenicians were such avid traders and sailed around trading with many different peoples.

Most of the writings that have been discovered from the Phoenicians have to do with trade and business.

The alphabet had twenty-two letters. It was read from right to left in diagonal lines. The shapes of the letters came from an earlier Egyptian form of hieroglyphics.

Their shapes came from the meanings of the symbols. For example, the first letter- aleph– means ox. And it’s shape looks a little like the head of an ox.

All of the letters in the Phoenician alphabet are consonants. The vowel sounds were added in when the language was spoken.

The Phoenician alphabet was different from other systems of writing that came before because instead of having a symbol to represent every word, the symbols actually represented letters that were put together to make words.

Occasionally- but not always- the Phoenicians put a straight line in between words to separate them.

This is what the Phoenician alphabet looked like.

Clay Tablet With Phoenician Writing

Although the Phoenicians often wrote on papyrus, they also occasionally wrote on stone tablets or gold panels and later on parchment and wax tablets.

When they wrote in clay, they used a stylus to inscribe the letters into the clay. In our activity, we’re going to use clay to write on and a wooden dowel as our stylus. So we’ll create a clay tablet with Phoenician writing.

Materials Needed:

  • Clay- You can use a variety of clay types, but you want a clay that is going to dry and maintain its shape- not just crumble like playdough. Modeling clay works well or a homemade clay that will dry out well without crumbling.
  • Wooden dowel or toothpick to write with
  • Phoenician alphabet chart- Download printable chart here.

Procedure:

Roll out your clay and shape it into a rectangle- or as close as you can get. We tried for a rectangle because we wanted our clay tablets to look “authentic.”

Use your wooden dowel or toothpick to copy the letter shapes from the chart onto your clay. You can also use the tip of a broken pencil. (We like to adapt and use what we have.)
Remember that this alphabet only contains consonants, so you won’t use the vowels of your name.

See what other words you can write using the alphabet. Because there are no vowels used, you can write words and see if others can decipher what you’ve written. Although this alphabet is supposed to be read diagonally from right to left, we used the traditional straight across left to write because it was easier.
Also, I wanted to let you know about this. If you’re looking for more hands-on history, we love using Home School in the Woods.
Once you’ve written the name or message you want to keep, let your clay tablet harden over night. If you use a colorless flour-based clay, you could paint your tablets as well. I use an all-natural dough that comes in earthy colors, so we didn’t paint ours.

Most historians agree that the most important legacy that the Phoenicians left behind was their alphabet. It’s been changed and added to, but it is the basis for the alphabet that we still use today.
