Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

In Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time, our favorite mouse finds himself smack dab in the middle of the Ice Age, Ancient Greece, and The Renaissance with the help of The Paw Pro Portal. Be sure to grab more Geronimo Stilton Books ideas and crafts on my page.

Geronimo shares a fun tale (or is it tail) which takes us through a very important period of ancient history.

Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

One thing I always enjoyed about the Geronimo Stilton books is that they introduce famous historical figures and places in a somewhat silly way, in graphic novel format.

We will focus on the second tale about Ancient Greece in the book The Race Against Time (Geronimo Stilton Journey Through Time #3.

The Race Against Time (Geronimo Stilton Journey Through Time #3

Kids really love the series. This story even gives an illustration of the Greek alphabet.

Your child will be introduced to Phidias the Greek Sculptor, playwright Sophocles, and historian Thucydides.

Too, they’ll learn about symposiums, Agora, the main square, and “visit” the Parthenon.

Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

Ancient Greece was a period of massive growth in the arts, wars, fashion and had busy ports, architecture, and astronomy.

The Ancient Greeks made their pots from clay.

Their pots were used for cooking, storing food to eat and drink from, as decoration, for perfumes and oils, and even urns to store the ashes of those cremated.

Sure, they were very useful, but they were also works of art.

Over time they went from simple decorations on their pottery to more intricate artwork.

For example, they used zig-zag patterns, gods and goddesses, chariots, buildings, people, and animals.

Pottery was a dark orange with black designs and later became reversed.

We are going to recreate our Greek pottery using a terra cotta pot and turn it into something that might be found as archaeologists dig through the sites of Ancient Greece.

Then I have more Geronimo Stilton book activities for kids.

Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

Finally, look how to make this fun Ancient Greek pottery designs.

This art project is a great learning activity because first they are researching Greek designs and pottery, and then it leads neatly into a discussion about archeology.

You can even add a third component by having them attempt to put the pieces back together like a 3D puzzle at the end.

The broken pieces of pottery look great lying in a basket or loose on a shelf to create a fun-themed vignette in your homeschool space.

Before starting your project, examine pictures of Greek pottery that archeologists have uncovered to get an idea of the types of designs they used. Here is a great video on YouTube about Ancient Greek Pottery.

Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time – Recreate Greek Pottery Craft

You can purchase inexpensive terra cotta pots at home improvement stores, Walmart, or Dollar Tree even.

We found this one abandoned in the garden and loved the aging of it so we gave it a good cleaning and used it rather than a new one.

You will need:

  • Terra Cotta pot
  • Permanent marker
  • Pillowcase
  • Hammer
Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

First, let your child decorate their pot using a black permanent.

You can also paint it, but I find that a permanent marker flows so nicely on the pots and makes a lot less mess.

Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

You can draw on famous Greek landmarks.

Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

Add some Greek men and women.

Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

Or whatever you like. Let them take their time adding whatever they want, you can even make it comic style with large individual cells around it to tell a story.

Now at this point, you can leave your pot as it is or move on to the next step which is to create broken pot shards like archeologists often find.

Place the pot in an old pillowcase or wrap it in a towel.

Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

Give it a few good hits with a hammer, you may prefer to take this part outside. I like to try and leave some larger pieces, so the art is still identifiable.

Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

Carefully, remove the pieces from the pillowcase, the edges may be sharp.

Geronimo Stilton Race Against Time And Make Pottery Like Ancient Greeks

Use them to decorate a shelf or move onto another step and challenge your child to put the pieces back together if they can.

I would recommend only doing this with older children as any glue, but hot glue is going to take too long to dry.

Here we assembled a few of our pot shards back together with glue and tape.

How to Make an Easy Back to School Yarn Wrapped Pencil

This yarn wrapped pencil is a great upcycle project too for all those Amazon boxes that have been coming bringing new supplies or curriculum.

15 Easy Back to School Crafts And Make A Yarn Wrapped Pencil

You will need:

  • Cardboard
  • scissors
  • Pink yarn
  • Yellow yarn
  • Gray yarn
  • Tan yarn
  • Markers
  • Hot glue gun
15 Easy Back to School Crafts And Make A Yarn Wrapped Pencil

First, cut out a pencil shape in any size you like ours is 12” x 4” using scissors or a straight edge boxcutter blade.

15 Easy Back to School Crafts And Make A Yarn Wrapped Pencil

For younger children, you might go ahead and color in each section to give them a little bit of a guide on how far to go with each color.

This also helps if there are pieces of cardboard showing through.

15 Easy Back to School Crafts And Make A Yarn Wrapped Pencil

Hot glue the end of your pink yarn to the cardboard and wrap the entire section.

When it is covered snip the end and glue that in place.

15 Easy Back to School Crafts And Make A Yarn Wrapped Pencil

To finish off the very end I just wrapped and glued the pink yarn all the way across.

15 Easy Back to School Crafts And Make A Yarn Wrapped Pencil

Move to the next color (gray) and secure the end down and wrap again as far as you wish to go.

15 Easy Back to School Crafts And Make A Yarn Wrapped Pencil

Repeat with yellow, covering the pencil well up near the pointed end.

15 Easy Back to School Crafts And Make A Yarn Wrapped Pencil

Color the pencil tip black with a marker.

You could also continue with a bit of black yarn but that takes a lot more glue to attach it so I find it just as effective to color it in.

Wrap the final part with a tan color to represent the exposed wood and secure the end with hot glue. I like to tuck a couple of strands of tan underneath the yellow.

You can use it as a display on your back-to-school table, a tiered tray, or anywhere else you want to add a bit of back-to-school whimsy.

Black Beauty

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. Black Beauty is a perennial children's favourite, one which has never been out of print since its publication in 1877. It is a moralistic tale of the life of the horse related in the form of an autobiography, describing the world through the eyes of the creature. In taking this anthropomorphic approach, the author Anna Sewell broke new literary ground and her effective storytelling ability makes it very easy for the reader to accept the premise that a horse is recounting the exploits in the narrative. The gentle thoroughbred, Black Beauty, is raised with care and is treated well until a vicious groom injures him. The damaged horse is then sold to various masters at whose hands he experiences cruelty and neglect. After many unpleasant episodes, including one where he becomes a painfully overworked cab horse in London, Black Beauty finally canters towards a happy ending

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

July 3, 2023 | 7 Comments

I have the Trail of Tears for kids free lapbook and unit study. Also, grab more ideas on my lapbook ideas and on my best homeschool unit studies pages.

In one of the saddest episodes of history, men, women, and children were taken from their land, herded into makeshift forts with minimal facilities and food, then forced to march a thousand miles.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

Between the years of 1684 and 1835, over 30 treaties chipped away at the Cherokee Indians’ original 135,000 square miles of land.

In the spring of 1837 and continuing through the fall of 1838, the Cherokee Indians were rounded up and corralled into stockades.

This began the Trail of Tears, a 1,200-mile journey to unfamiliar territory.

The Trail of Tears for Kids

Taking our time to complete this lapbook about the Cherokee and The Trail of Tears was just the pizazz we needed to get back into our groove after moving.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

We read about Sequoyah and his contribution to the Cherokee language and how his people viewed him.  Like most of my minibooks, you can use the information we added or use your own research.

Cherokee culture continued to flourish with the invention of the Cherokee alphabet by Sequoyah in 1821

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

I try to provide some information always on the minibooks to help in case you have made more lesson plans than you have time at the moment.  It happens to all of us so I like minibooks that are easy to put together.

The Trail of Tears for Kids Words to Know

Next, look at some of these words and events to know.

  • Indian Removal Act of 1830. In 1830 the Congress of the United States passed the “Indian Removal Act. The white communities turned on their Indian neighbors and the U.S. Government decided it was time for the Cherokees to leave behind their farms, their land and their homes.
  • “Nunna daul Tsuny”.The route they traversed and the journey itself became known as “The Trail of Tears” or, as a direct translation from Cherokee, “The Trail Where They Cried”
  • President Andrew Jackson. Led the country from 1828 to 1837, the Trail of Tears (1837 to 1839) was the forced westward migration of American Indian tribes from the South and Southeast He signs the Indian Removal Act which leads to Trail of Tears.
  • Davy Crockett. The famous Tennessee Congressman who protested the Indian Removal Act.
  • Gen. Winfield Scott. The general who led the forced Cherokee removal.
  • Oklahoma. The Indian Territory as it was called then that the Cherokees were forced to move to.

Then we did an easy Did You Know minibook. Tiny wanted to take a bunny trail off this unit study to talk about Davy Crockett because he was against the Indian Removal Act.

The Trail of Tears Free Minibooks

Normally, we would venture away from our topic, but this time we stuck to it because we had such a long stretch of time in finishing it.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

This next minibook was one I wanted Tiny to do so he could think about the injustices in the world today and to read about the Bible’s view on it.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

The terrible injustice done to all the civilized tribes at that time should touch any heart young and old and this gives your child a chance to voice his opinion on it.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

Then I made a few pieces to decorate the front of the lapbook.

Tiny used part of it and the other part of his lapbook, he chose a picture of a Cherokee chief to color.

There are some beautiful free pictures to color that are not babyish found on First People and that is where we got this picture.

If you are planning or are in the middle of an animal science homeschool curriculum you are going to get a lot of great questions. Also, you’ll love more ideas on my Oceans Unit Study and Lapbook.

A fun way to answer them is by adding in some simple hands-on ideas.

My favorite part of any study is including lots of fun hands-on ideas that help a child easily understand a concept.

With that in mind, I have some of the best activities to answer animal science questions.

The first question we are going to answer that goes along with our experiment today is what are gills.

How do Fish Breathe Underwater Fun Activity & Animal Science Homeschool Curriculum

Just like we do, fish need to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide to survive.

But they do not have lungs, they have gills.

Gills are branching organs that are located on both sides of the fish’s head that have a lot of small blood vessels called capillaries.

What Are Gills

Gills work as pumps to move the water while they absorb oxygen and move out carbon dioxide.

The part that you can see on the exterior of the fish is not the gills, rather they are a “gill cover” called opercula.

Watch How Do Fish Breathe Underwater on YouTube for a great video explanation of this process.

What Other Animals Use Gills To Breathe

Mostly fish crabs and mollusks also use their gills to breathe. Larvae like tadpoles and dragonfly larvae use gills in the water at first where they start.

There are many fantastic and inexpensive experiments out there that let your child get deeper involved in the learning process rather than just being read to.

They can help answer questions kids might not even have asked yet or ones you may not be quite sure how to answer yourself.

Animal Science Questions Asked And Answered

For example, look at these questions below.

  • Why do birds fly in a V?
  • How do penguins stay dry?
  • Why do Cat’s Eyes Glow?
  • How do sharks float?
  • What is the difference between warm-blooded vs. cold-blooded?
  • How does a duck stay dry in the water?
  • Why Don’t Frogs Freeze?
  • Why are birds’ beaks shaped differently?
  • Finally, how do fish breathe underwater. We will answer this one further down below with a hands-on experiment.

These are all fantastic ways to teach or learn as a supplement to your box curriculum or used as your very own DIY animal science homeschool curriculum.

Finally, how do fish and other animals with gills breath underwater.

How Do Fish and Other Animals with Gills Breathe Underwater Activity

This experiment helps children understand the process of how fish, crabs, and mollusks breathe with gills rather than with lungs underwater.

Note: The coffee represents the oxygen in the water, the filter the gills, and the water is fresh or salt water the fish takes in.

You will need:

  • 2 glasses or bowls
  • Water
  • Ground Coffee or Dirt
  • Coffee filter
  • Rubber band
How do Fish Breathe Underwater Fun Activity & Animal Science Homeschool Curriculum

First, begin by explaining that the water is ocean water, the coffee is the oxygen in the water, and the filter is the fish’s gills.

Draw gills in the center of your coffee filter to help with the visual.

How do Fish Breathe Underwater Fun Activity & Animal Science Homeschool Curriculum

Place a cup or so of water into a container.

Stir in 1-2 Tablespoons of coffee/dirt allowing the color to absorb somewhat.

How do Fish Breathe Underwater Fun Activity & Animal Science Homeschool Curriculum

Place the coffee filter on top of the second clear container and secure it with a rubber band.

Press it down a bit in the middle so it has a dip in the center to hold the water as it is poured through.

How do Fish Breathe Underwater Fun Activity & Animal Science Homeschool Curriculum

Carefully pour coffee and water through the filter.

How do Fish Breathe Underwater Fun Activity & Animal Science Homeschool Curriculum

Watch as the filter “gills” traps the coffee “oxygen” as the water passes through them but the grounds ”carbon dioxide” is filtered out.

How do Fish Breathe Underwater Fun Activity & Animal Science Homeschool Curriculum

Show your child how the filter/gills allowed what was needed through and the rest was filtered out (grounds/carbon dioxide).

It is easy to see in this demonstration because now the water has turned brown.
