Growing up today and learning is quite different than in years past.
While true there are many opportunities to learn about technology, we must address the loss of time children spend outdoors.
We do try our best to keep the balance but there is a loss of unstructured play and connection with nature.
So nature study is more than taking a walk outdoors.
It can be a unit study which covers many subjects or it can strictly be a science topic. Besides when you have a list of nature study ideas, it’s easier to find something at your fingertips.

I prefer to use living books when possible, then add reference type of books too when I find them.
