Why Evergreens Keep Their Leaves

One autumn evening, Little Redbird settled down for one last sleep before flying south for winter. As he slept, a strong gust of wind shook him from his cozy nest . . .

. . . Little Redbird hurts his wing and misses his chance to fly south for the winter. As he searches for a new home amongst the trees, he begins to realize that not all trees are fit for the winter cold. As more and more trees refuse him shelter, too preoccupied with their preparations for the frost, Little Redbird fears the worst. That is, until he comes across a friendly bunch of evergreens.

In the spirit of Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince, Why Evergreens Keep Their Leaves is a timeless story of kindness and why the fir, spruce, and juniper trees are evergreen all winter long.

Backyard Birding Flashcards: 100 Common Birds

The Sibley Field Guide to Birds is now transformed into 100 easy-to-reference cards housed in one handsome pull-drawer gift box. Free Fun Lapbook for Kids About the French Revolution

I have a free French Revolution lapbook. Also, look at my page Homeschool Lapbooks – Powerful Tools For Mastery Learning and my page French Revolution 1789 – 1799 Unit Study & Lapbook for more ideas.

Sometimes I feel like we are slow go on our lapbooks, but we sure did savor our French Revolution lapbook.  Too, I chose a lot of reading on this unit study for the boys so we took a little longer on it.

Free Fun Lapbook for Kids About the French Revolution

So today, I finish up by sharing books 8,9, and 10 which are What is the Reign of Terror? What is the Directory? and What is the Sans-Cullotte?

They are mini flip books that go in the center of the lapbook.

I like to use as much of the room as I can in the lapbook and the page too, but I don’t worry as much about how many minibooks to add as I do the content, the shape and how much information I think we will include in them.

That is why it’s easy to share them with you as I plod along and create them for my boys.  Sometimes I plan ahead on my lapbooks and line out the minibooks, but this kind of project is one where we read and then do.

French Revolution Lapbook

I did manage to get all three minibooks on one sheet of paper this time as well as the inside information pages.

You know how I feel about giving you a bunch of blank pages on lapbooks.  Can you say useless?

French Revolution Directory Reign of Terror Sans Cullotte

I am being bad this morning because there are some great lapbooks with blank pages, but I would rather have a bit of information in case I’m tight on time with my schedule.

Then I can decide whether I want my kids to  add our own research or use some facts given.

I figure you might like that same option too which is why I always try to include a bit of information on the subject.

I hope you can use this lapbook.

More Activities About the French Revolution

  • Pain Au Chocolat Easy Recipe
  • Learn About the Geography of France by Creating A Solar Oven

  • Unit Study: French Revolution + Free Storming the Bastille Game

Next, add some of these books we loved reading set before, during, or after the French Revolution.

6 Books For Kids About or Set in the French Revolution Time

Although the French Revolution is not easy to learn about, great books can bring a subject to life.

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy

The novel is set during the Reign of Terror following the start of the French Revolution. The title is the nom de guerre of its hero and protagonist, a chivalrous Englishman who rescues aristocrats before they are sent to the guillotine. Sir Percy Blakeney leads a double life: apparently nothing more than a wealthy fop, but in reality a formidable swordsman and a quick-thinking master of disguise and escape artist. The band of gentlemen who assist him are the only ones who know of his secret identity. He is known by his symbol, a simple flower, the scarlet pimpernel.

A Tale of Two Cities: (150th Anniversary Edition) (Signet Classics)

A Tale of Two Cities is Charles Dickens’s great historical novel, set against the violent upheaval of the French Revolution. The most famous and perhaps the most popular of his works, it compresses an event of immense complexity to the scale of a family history, with a cast of characters that includes a bloodthirsty ogress and an antihero as believably flawed as any in modern fiction. Though the least typical of the author’s novels, A Tale of Two Cities still underscores many of his enduring themes—imprisonment, injustice, social anarchy, resurrection, and the renunciation that fosters renewal.

In Search of Honor

In Search of Honor is historical fiction by Donnalynn Hess set in the late 1700s during the violent days of the French Revolution. This Christian fiction for teens tells of young Jacques Chenier who is trapped in a
prison stronger than the Bastille, a prison of bitterness. Jacques wants revenge for his father, his mother, his fellow artisans, and for himself. But escaping from a prison of the heart is no easy task. In Search of Honor is the story of this young man’s struggle for justice and truth.

Scaramouche

Set in 17th century Italy, it tells the story of a young man who is driven to seek justice against a powerful and oppressive oppressor. Through thrilling twists and turns, Scaramouche must confront his own inner demons and risk his life to save his people. With thrilling action, a compelling hero, and a deep exploration of justice, Scaramouche is a must-read for fans of historical fiction. Featuring Sabatini's signature swashbuckling style and vivid writing, Scaramouche is sure to captivate readers and leave them with a lasting impression of its timeless themes.

In the Reign of Terror: A Story of the French Revolution (Dover Children's Classics)

Return to the tumultuous days of the French Revolution with this captivating tale of adventure and courage. Join Harry Sandwith, a young Englishman, as he accepts a job as a companion to the sons of a French marquis. Follow Harry and his aristocratic friends as they're swept from their idyllic life at a country estate to the riotous streets of Paris and the very gates of the Bastille. Can Harry rescue the marquis' family from imprisonment and certain death at the hands of the merciless mob?Author George Alfred Henty specialized in creating novels for young readers that blend authentic historical facts with exciting fictional characters. Famed as "The Prince of Storytellers," Henty wrote more than 140 books. Generations of schoolchildren have thrilled to his vivid novels, which continue to fire young imaginations with their spirited tales of adventure amid exciting historical eras.

The Lacemaker and the Princess

ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD ISABELLE IS A LACEMAKER IN THE TOWN OF VERSAILLES. One day as she delivers lace to the palace, she is almost trampled by a crowd of courtiers -- only to be rescued by Marie Antoinette. Before Isabelle can believe it, she has a new job -- companion to the queen's daughter. Isabelle is given a fashionable name, fashionable dresses -- a new identity. At home she plies her needle under her grandmother's disapproving eye. At the palace she is playmate to a princess. Thrown into a world of luxury, Isabelle is living a fairy-tale life. But this facade begins to crumble when rumors of starvation in the countryside lead to whispers of revolution. How can Isabelle reconcile the ugly things she hears in the town with the kind family she knows in the palace? And which side is she truly on? Inspired by an actual friendship between the French princess and a commoner who became her companion, Kimberly Brubaker Bradley offers a vivid portrait of life inside the palace of Versailles -- and a touching tale of two friends divided by class and the hunger for equality and freedom that fueled the French Revolution.

Today, I have a free American history lapbook, learning about The Old West through the life of Wyatt Earp finished. Also, you’ll love my post 35 Simple But Powerful American History Homeschool Resources K to 12. and more ideas on my lapbook ideas and best homeschool unit studies pages.

Free American History Lapbook The Old West Through the Life of Wyatt Earp

We finished out lapbook and unit study and really soaked up life during the time period Wyatt Earp lived, which was the late 1800s to early 1900s.

Life in the 1800s and 1900s through the Life of Wyatt Earp

Too, I have the rest of the minibooks to share with you.

After doing the notebooking pages, it was time we focused some on the art of that time period.

Frederic Remington was an American painter and sculptor who specialized in depictions of the Old American West, especially during the time period Wyatt Earp lived.

So we read about him and studied a few pieces of his art. I have a few of his paintings below on the art cards to add some fun and appreciation for art period of that time.

There is just enough room on each card to write down the title of the painting and the date.

There are enough of his paintings and work free online that it’s worth taking some time to look through them to understand the changing time of American through his art.

And then also because Tiny wrote about life during the 1800s and 1900s in the notebooking pages and wanted to include those on this lapbook as minibooks, I created some covers.

These go on the outside of the notebooking pages after they have been folded to add to the lapbook.

Be sure to look at this post at how to turn a worksheet into a fun minibook.

By the way, Tiny glued all the minibooks on there  and forgot to include the minibook he did on Tomstone, but you can include that one if you want to.

Add one or two of these books to your unit study about Wyatt Earp who lived between 1848 and 1929.

Wyatt Earp : U. S. Marshal (Landmark Books #67)

- Possibly the greatest gunfighter the Old West ever knew.

Tombstone: The Earp Brothers, Doc Holliday, and the Vendetta Ride from Hell (Frontier Lawmen)

On the afternoon of October 26, 1881, eight men clashed in what would be known as the most famous shootout in American frontier history. Thirty bullets were exchanged in thirty seconds, killing three men and wounding three others. The fight sprang forth from a tense, hot summer. Cattle rustlers had been terrorizing the back country of Mexico and selling the livestock they stole to corrupt ranchers. The Mexican government built forts along the border to try to thwart American outlaws, while Arizona citizens became increasingly agitated. Rustlers, who became known as the cow-boys, began to kill each other as well as
innocent citizens. That October, tensions boiled over with Ike and Billy Clanton, Tom and Frank McLaury, and Billy Claiborne confronting the Tombstone marshal, Virgil Earp, and the suddenly deputized Wyatt and Morgan Earp and shotgun-toting Doc Holliday.

History for Kids: The Life of Wyatt Earp

Of all the colorful characters that inhabited the West during the 19th century, the most famous of them all is Wyatt Earp (1848-1929), who has long been regarded as the embodiment of the Wild West. Considered the toughest and deadliest gunman of his day.

Earp symbolized the swagger, the heroism, and even the lawlessness of the West, notorious for being a law enforcer, gambler, saloon keeper, and vigilante. The Western icon is best known for being a sheriff in Tombstone, but before that he had been arrested and jailed several times himself, in one case escaping from prison, and he was not above gambling and spending time in houses of ill-fame.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

I have the Trail of Tears for kids free lapbook and unit study. Also, grab more ideas on my lapbook ideas and on my best homeschool unit studies pages.

In one of the saddest episodes of history, men, women, and children were taken from their land, herded into makeshift forts with minimal facilities and food, then forced to march a thousand miles.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

Between the years of 1684 and 1835, over 30 treaties chipped away at the Cherokee Indians’ original 135,000 square miles of land.

In the spring of 1837 and continuing through the fall of 1838, the Cherokee Indians were rounded up and corralled into stockades.

This began the Trail of Tears, a 1,200-mile journey to unfamiliar territory.

The Trail of Tears for Kids

Taking our time to complete this lapbook about the Cherokee and The Trail of Tears was just the pizazz we needed to get back into our groove after moving.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

We read about Sequoyah and his contribution to the Cherokee language and how his people viewed him.  Like most of my minibooks, you can use the information we added or use your own research.

Cherokee culture continued to flourish with the invention of the Cherokee alphabet by Sequoyah in 1821

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

I try to provide some information always on the minibooks to help in case you have made more lesson plans than you have time at the moment.  It happens to all of us so I like minibooks that are easy to put together.

The Trail of Tears for Kids Words to Know

Next, look at some of these words and events to know.

  • Indian Removal Act of 1830. In 1830 the Congress of the United States passed the “Indian Removal Act. The white communities turned on their Indian neighbors and the U.S. Government decided it was time for the Cherokees to leave behind their farms, their land and their homes.
  • “Nunna daul Tsuny”.The route they traversed and the journey itself became known as “The Trail of Tears” or, as a direct translation from Cherokee, “The Trail Where They Cried”
  • President Andrew Jackson. Led the country from 1828 to 1837, the Trail of Tears (1837 to 1839) was the forced westward migration of American Indian tribes from the South and Southeast He signs the Indian Removal Act which leads to Trail of Tears.
  • Davy Crockett. The famous Tennessee Congressman who protested the Indian Removal Act.
  • Gen. Winfield Scott. The general who led the forced Cherokee removal.
  • Oklahoma. The Indian Territory as it was called then that the Cherokees were forced to move to.

Then we did an easy Did You Know minibook. Tiny wanted to take a bunny trail off this unit study to talk about Davy Crockett because he was against the Indian Removal Act.

The Trail of Tears Free Minibooks

Normally, we would venture away from our topic, but this time we stuck to it because we had such a long stretch of time in finishing it.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

This next minibook was one I wanted Tiny to do so he could think about the injustices in the world today and to read about the Bible’s view on it.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

The terrible injustice done to all the civilized tribes at that time should touch any heart young and old and this gives your child a chance to voice his opinion on it.

Free The Trail Of Tears For Kids Fun Unit Study Ideas And Lapbook

Then I made a few pieces to decorate the front of the lapbook.

Tiny used part of it and the other part of his lapbook, he chose a picture of a Cherokee chief to color.

There are some beautiful free pictures to color that are not babyish found on First People and that is where we got this picture.

Besides, teaching geography doesn’t have to be boring or be just about maps.

True, here is an easy way to remember what is a geographer.

Geo = earth, graph = to write or draw, and er = one who.

So, while a geographer is one who writes about or draws maps, geography entails so much more.

Why Use Hands-on Geography

Learning by doing is the best way to learn because what you do sticks.

Reading is a good way to learn but hands-on activities help your child to remember what he is learning.

In addition, there are many ways to learn about geography hands-on.

For example, salt dough maps are not only fun, but children can touch and feel landforms while they’re creating them.

Also, geography entails learning about not just the physical parts like mountain ranges and water systems but it’s about the flora and fauna that make their home in places.

Too, you want to learn about the people and the culture.

Children can appreciate the culture of a country when they study the dress, the food, and even the music and musical instruments of each country.

Homeschool High School Geography Resources and Books

Geography for high school should still be fun and hands-on. It can take years to find the right resources. However, I’ve gathered up some of my favorite books and resources.

North Star Geography

North Star Geography covers basic geography skills (maps, navigation) as well as physical geography (topography, biosphere, structure of the earth) and human geography (environmental stewardship, agriculture, culture, heritage & more)—all from a Christian perspective. Each lesson in the Reader is approximately 10-15 pages and geared toward junior high-high school students, though it may be adapted for younger students; the text features full-color maps, illustrations, and interesting sidebars. Accompanying each lesson on the Companion Guide, hands-on project options, as well as an “atlas building” section where students label outline maps, are provided. Note-taking pages feature ten questions taken from the text that can be used for review or comprehension questions, as well as for a study guide for the exam

How to Use the O Ring Geography Vocabulary

Next, after you download the free vocabulary words you can use them in many ways.

First, you will want to put them on an O ring.

After you print, fold them in half.

On the front you will see the word and, on the back, will be the definition.

Then laminate them.

After you laminate them, punch hole, and put them on an O ring.

They are easily stored, or you can take them on the go for learning.

In addition, they make a fun hands-on tool which fosters independence.

A child can pick them up and learn with any subject.
