We’re learning why does a rainbow appear after a drizzle and doing a fun growing rainbow STEM experiment. Also, look at my Free Weather Unit Study for Kids Who Love Hands-on Learning & Rain cloud Jar.

After a light rain or drizzle, a beautiful rainbow can appear. Although rain has a lot to do with it but so does the sunlight. Then after the rain slows down or stops, the clouds often move. And the sun peeks out.

Next, the sun shines through the leftover rain drops.

You’d think the sunlight may look white, but actually it’s made of many different colors.

HOW TO DO A GROWING RAINBOW STEM EXPERIMENT

First, gather these easy supplies:

  • paper towel (1 select a size, cut in half lengthwise, or a full-size paper towel cut into a 1/4)
  • scissors
  • 2 glasses of water (glass or clear plastic)
  • washable markers (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple)

Gather all the supplies needed.

Cut a piece of paper towel in half if using the select-a-size.

For example, I used The Anthology of Intriguing Animals, access to the internet for research and then added a few more good resource books.

You’ll want to create your own zoology notebook. The beauty of doing everything in the notebook is that it is full of your child’s own investigations, experiments, observations, drawings, and notes. It becomes a cherished keepsake.

And it can be used for records, and helps you keep some of the loose paper problems down.

Besides, it can be customized to fit your kids needs, ages, and even their style. Because it is so open ended it can be done with preschoolers right through high school.

INTRODUCTION TO ZOOLOGY AND CLASSIFICATION: WEEK 1

What is zoology? It is the scientific study of the behavior, structure, physiology, classification, and distribution of animals.

History of zoology: Learn about the development of zoology from early observations of the natural world to more formal scientific disciplines.

Highlight key figures and their contributions, and discuss how technological advancements have changed the field. Here is a wonderful list of Zoology Careers.

Animal classification (vertebrates vs. invertebrates): Introduce the division of the animal kingdom into vertebrates (animals with a backbone) and invertebrates (animals without a backbone).

Explore the characteristics of each group and provide examples of each. Discuss the importance of classification systems in organizing and understanding the relationships between different animal species.

Kingdoms of life: Broaden the scope to encompass the five (or sometimes six) kingdoms of life, emphasizing the place of animals within this larger biological framework.

INTRODUCTION TO ZOOLOGY AND CLASSIFICATION ACTIVITIES

Briefly describe the characteristics of each kingdom (Monera/Bacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia) and discuss the relationships between them.

  • Begin a zoology notebook to track everything your child learns, see below for how to put one together easily.
  • Create an animal kingdom chart: Include a hands-on activity where learners create a visual representation of the animal kingdom. This could include classifying different animals based on their characteristics and placing them within a hierarchical chart.
  • Research famous zoologists: Assign research projects on notable zoologists throughout history. Encourage learners to explore their contributions to the field, the challenges they faced, and the impact of their work on our understanding of animals. Presentations or short reports can be used to share findings.
  • Dissect owl pellets:This provides a first hand opportunity for hands-on exploration of animal diets and food webs through the dissection of owl pellets. Explain the process of how owls produce pellets and guide learners in identifying the bones and other remains of prey animals.

Insects: Explore the most diverse group of animals on Earth – the insects. Discuss their key characteristics, including a three-part body (head, thorax, abdomen), six legs, and often wings. Examine the different orders of insects and their adaptations to a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic habitats.

Arachnids: Investigate the characteristics of arachnids, such as spiders, scorpions, ticks, and mites. Discuss their eight legs and their adaptations for predation and survival. Explore the different types of arachnids and their ecological roles.

Mollusks: Study the diverse phylum of mollusks, which includes snails, slugs, clams, oysters, and squid. Discuss their soft bodies, often protected by a shell, and their various adaptations for feeding, locomotion, and respiration in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments.

Discuss the different castes of ants and their roles within the colony. Ensure ethical treatment of the ants and proper disposal after observation.

Arctic regions: Examine the characteristics of Arctic and other cold-climate habitats, including low temperatures, ice cover, and seasonal changes in daylight. Discuss the adaptations of animals that live in these harsh environments, such as thick fur or blubber, hibernation, and migration.

Animal adaptations: Focus on the general concept of adaptation – the evolutionary process by which animals develop traits that enhance their survival and reproduction in specific environments. Discuss different types of adaptations, including structural, physiological, and behavioral adaptations, and provide examples across various animal groups and habitats.

  • Create dioramas of different habitats: Engage learners in creating three-dimensional models (dioramas) of different animal habitats. Encourage them to research the specific characteristics of each habitat and the animals that live there, and to use various materials to represent the environment and its inhabitants.
  • Research animal camouflage: Assign research projects on animal camouflage as a specific type of adaptation. Anytime is really a good time to get your little learners outside with these fun summer learning ideas. Especially with hands-on ideas and room for free exploration, try one or two of these activities.

Teaching your elementary school children doesn’t have to stop in summer. A lot of homeschoolers school year round and summer is not any different than any other season.

Summer Learning Ideas For The Littles & Free Backyard Brainiacs Printable

We homeschool, we learn and take time off as needed. Repeat as necessary.

And young children learn best through play, exploration, and meaningful conversations with you. So, turn your backyard into a lab or make it a nature story time place.

The Raft

The exploding melon experiment is a perfect example of physics and engineering in action.

Just so you know this is one of the coolest and messiest science activity we’ve done. Be sure to do this outside for a fun summer day.

How to Conduct an Exploding Watermelon Theme Experiment

The idea is simple: you stretch rubber bands around the middle of the melon, one at a time.

Eventually, the melon explodes, shooting juice and pieces everywhere.

However, there is a lot of science to learn from this simple experiment.

How to Conduct an Exploding Watermelon Theme Experiment

Finally, look at how to do this experiment.

EXPLODING WATERMELON EXPERIMENT

You will need:

  • A medium-sized watermelon
  • 400-600 rubber bands
  • Safety goggles

The very first step is to put on your safety goggles. 

Ensure that all observers also have their eye protection in place. This cannot be stressed enough – flying watermelon pieces can cause serious eye injury.

Choose a flat outdoor surface and set down the watermelon. 

If you are using protective sheeting, lay it down before placing the watermelon. 

Have your camera or phone ready to record the event. Consider the lighting and the angle that will best capture the explosion.

Apply the first layer, carefully placing rubber bands around the circumference of the watermelon. 

Ensure that they are distributed somewhat evenly around the widest part of the fruit.

There’s no specific pattern required, just aim for relatively uniform coverage.

Layer by layer, continue adding rubber bands, one at a time. 

As you add more, you will start to feel the tension increasing. The rubber bands will begin to bunch together and press firmly against the watermelon’s rind. 

Try to weave the new rubber bands in among the existing ones to distribute the pressure as evenly as possible. 

Using a mix of rubber band sizes can help achieve better coverage and prevent too much stress on a single point.

How to Conduct an Exploding Watermelon Theme Experiment

Once you have applied a significant number of rubber bands, pause and observe the watermelon closely. 

MELON EXPERIMENT

You may start to hear subtle cracking or popping sounds emanating from the rind.

These are indicators that the pressure is building and the watermelon’s structural integrity is being challenged. 

Be patient; the explosion won’t happen instantaneously.

Keep adding rubber bands. As the pressure intensifies, the watermelon will likely begin to deform slightly. The area around the equator will appear compressed, and the rubber bands will be tightly stretched. 

The cracking and popping sounds may become more frequent and pronounced. 

This is the exciting phase where the internal forces are nearing their limit, you can see how one end of the watermelon is bulging and catch where it was just beginning to burst.

How to Conduct an Exploding Watermelon Theme Experiment

Eventually, the cumulative pressure from the rubber bands will exceed the tensile strength of the watermelon rind. This will result in a sudden and often surprisingly powerful explosion.

The watermelon will rupture, sending chunks of rind and flesh flying outwards. Be prepared for a loud noise and a shower of watermelon debris. Maintain a safe distance during this stage.

Almost as cool as the explosion was that the rubber bands formed a tight rubber band ball when the watermelon pushed through them.

The exploding watermelon experiment  illustrates several key scientific concepts:

SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS MELON EXPERIMENT

Energy Release: The potential energy stored in the stretched rubber bands and the compressed watermelon is suddenly released during the explosion, propelling the fragments outwards.

External Pressure: The rubber bands exert an external compressive force on the watermelon. Each rubber band contributes a small amount of tension, and the cumulative effect of hundreds of these bands creates significant pressure directed inwards towards the watermelon’s core.

Internal Pressure: Watermelons, like many fruits, have a high water content, which contributes to internal turgor pressure. This internal pressure pushes outwards against the rind, helping the fruit maintain its shape.

Tensile Strength: The watermelon rind possesses a certain amount of tensile strength, which is its ability to withstand being pulled apart or stretched. The rind can endure a certain level of external pressure before its structural integrity is compromised.

Accumulation of Force: Individually, a single rubber band exerts a relatively small force. However, by applying a large number of rubber bands, these small forces add up to create a substantial overall pressure. This demonstrates how multiple small forces can combine to overcome a greater resistance.

Material Failure: The explosion occurs when the total external pressure exerted by the rubber bands exceeds the tensile strength of the watermelon rind plus its internal pressure. At this point, the rind can no longer withstand the forces acting upon it, and it ruptures catastrophically.
