Ancient Egypt Civilization How to Make A King Narmer Double Crown Craft

If you’re learning Ancient Egypt civilization, you’ll love this next hands-on history activity. Also, look at my Ancient Civilizations page about Ancient Egypt for more ideas! Too, look at my page Fun Pharaohs and Queens Ancient Egypt Lapbook and Activities for more ideas.

Learning homeschool history should be just as much about doing as reading living history books. So today, I have a hands-on history craft and it is Ancient Egypt Civilization King Narmer Crown by using salt dough.

Ancient Egypt Civilization How to Make A King Narmer Double Crown Craft

My goal in this series is to focus on the ancient civilizations. It seems like plenty of hands-on history ideas abound for early American life or American history, but it can be a bit more difficult to find ideas for a study of the ancients.

Some of these ideas in this series come from books, but many do not.

They come from my experience teaching this several times over. I hope your kids, any age, will enjoy these ideas or they will help you to take a spinoff idea from mine.

Learning About Ancient Egypt Through Hands-on Art

For example, this idea for the ancient Egypt civilization of King Narmer’s double crown could easily be substituted for a picture of Cleopatra from the Cleopatra: Queen of Egypt book that we love.

Ancient Egypt Civilization How to Make A King Narmer Double Crown Craft

Her side profile would make an excellent hands-on history idea and a fun way to learn about the time period.

Ancient Egypt Civilization How to Make A King Narmer Double Crown Craft

Look at the easy ingredients we already had at the house for this salt dough project.

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • paints/paint brushes. We had a combination of tempera and poster paints. Just grab what you have.
  • cookie tray
  • aluminum foil
  • wooden skewer and even a few toothpicks to use for drawing
  • big mixing bowl, dry measuring cup and liquid measuring cup
  • spatula or big spoon for stirring
  • preheat oven to 170 degrees Fahrenheit
Ancient Egypt Civilization How to Make A King Narmer Double Crown Craft

It couldn’t be any easier or quicker to measure and mix the flour, salt, and warm water.

Stir to combine and then get your kid to use his hands to mix well.

Ancient Egypt Civilization How to Make A King Narmer Double Crown Craft

Then line the cookie tray with foil and roll the dough out onto the platter. And start pressing down and shaping.

Ancient Egypt Civilization How to Make A King Narmer Double Crown Craft

Try to get the same width all the way around. Tiny shaped it into looking like an ancient tablet.

KING NARMER DOUBLE CROWN SALT DOUGH CRAFT

Then, look for a picture your child wants to sketch or draw. Also, this could easily be turned into a cartouche.

Ancient Egypt Civilization How to Make A King Narmer Double Crown Craft

Tiny found a sketch of King Narmer (also known as Menes) that he liked and to use for drawing.

Then using the wooden skewer and toothpick, he began sketching and drawing the design.

Day 1. Ancient Egypt Civilization (Hands-on History): Narmer Crown

The beauty of working with salt dough is that until it dries your kid can erase and shape and form the picture until he gets it to look like he wants it to.

Day 1. Ancient Egypt Civilization (Hands-on History): Narmer Crown

Then another advantage of salt dough is that you can take a break and let it dry overnight before painting or bake in the oven until dry.

We baked it about 30 minutes and checked every 10 minutes or so.

Day 1. Ancient Egypt Civilization (Hands-on History): Narmer Crown

We could tell it was dry because it was hard and there were no soft spots and of course the cracks gave it away too that it was dry.

Day 1. Ancient Egypt Civilization (Hands-on History): Narmer Crown

Then Tiny mixed a few colors until he got the right color combination he wanted for the background and he painted that first. It dried pretty quickly.

Then he added a few other colors and overall this was such a fun and easy project to do while learning about Ancient Civilizations.

Day 1. Ancient Egypt Civilization (Hands-on History): Narmer Crown

Also, I love, love, using Home School in the Woods hands-on ideas and projects. You will too!

I have several other ideas to go with this Ancient Egypt Civilization project.

Look at these other posts you’ll love:

  • Ancient Egyptian Mathematics: Build a LEGO Math Calculator
  • Go to my Ancient Civilization page for a free lapbook on Ancient Egypt,
  • look at Ancient Civilization II which has Ancient Egypt minibooks and

Hugs and love ya,

I have 21 hands-on math activities for elementary and middle school. Also, look at my page How To Homeschool Elementary Students Like A Pro.

As our kids get older, it’s so easy to start shying away from teaching more advanced math concepts. Especially if you were an English major in college, like someone I know. *cough* me *coughcough*

Math is taught very differently now than it was when I was in school.

21 Hands-On Math Activities for Elementary and Middle School

When I started looking at upper elementary and middle school math concepts to teach my children a couple of years ago, I felt completely lost. It was like going back to school myself!

But, over time, I’ve gotten more comfortable with these concepts.

I’ve also found a few ways to make abstract math ideas come to life with these fun hands-on math projects and crafts!

There are 21 math learning activities below that are perfect for upper elementary and middle school students, even if you’re not math inclined yourself.

First, look at these fun living books to add to your day.

10 Math Books for Kids Who Love Math

Add some of these books about math for a day of fun study or for your home library.

Mathematicians Are People, Too: Stories from the Lives of Great Mathematicians

Looks at the history of mathematical discoveries and the lives of great mathematicians.

Of Numbers and Stars

Presents the life of a Egyptian woman who lived in fifth century Alexandria and became a respected scholar in mathematics and philosophy.

Inch by Inch

A small green inchworm is proud of his skill at measuring anything—a robin’s tail, a flamingo’s neck, a toucan’s beak. Then one day a nightingale threatens to eat him if he cannot measure his song. Children will enjoy the clever inchworm’s solution and delight in finding the tiny hero on every page.

Anno's Math Games 2

The Adventures of Penrose the Mathematical Cat

Penrose, a cat with a knack for math, takes children on an adventurous tour of mathematical concepts from fractals to infinity.

A Place for Zero (Charlesbridge Math Adventures)

Join Zero on his math adventure as he discovers his place through multiplication. Zero is lonely in Digitaria. He can't play Addemup with the other numbers because he has nothing to add. All the other numbers seem to belong and they all have a place, but when zero discovers multiplication he thinks he might have a place there. He sets out to find King Multiplus who also is curious about what will happen when Zero gets thrown in the mix. With math and wordplay A Place for Zero is the perfect introduction to multiplication and number placement. A playful way to make math less intimidating and more fun to explore.

The Boy Who Loved Math- The Improbable Life of Paul Erdos

Most people think of mathematicians as solitary, working away in isolation. And, it's true, many of them do. But Paul Erdos never followed the usual path. At the age of four, he could ask you when you were born and then calculate the number of seconds you had been alive in his head. But he didn't learn to butter his own bread until he turned twenty. Instead, he traveled around the world, from one mathematician to the next, collaborating on an astonishing number of publications. With a simple, lyrical text and richly layered illustrations, this is a beautiful introduction to the world of math and a fascinating look at the unique character traits that made "Uncle Paul" a great man.

Equal Shmequal (Charlesbridge Math Adventures)

Mouse and her friends want to play tug-of-war, but they’ll need to use some everyday math to figure out how to make teams that are equal. As Mouse looks at various solutions she is not sure what it means to be equal. Nothing works until Mouse starts to think about it mathematically
and divides the teams based on weight. Wonderful illustrations capture
Mouse and her animal friends from whiskers to tails as they work to measure and equalize their teams based on size, weight, and effort. A
perfect addition to any STEM/STEAM collection that shows readers how
math can be used in everyday problem solving.

The Girl With a Mind For Math: The Story of Raye Montague

Meet Raye Montague – a "hidden figure" who made waves in the U.S. Navy! After touring a German submarine in the early 1940s, young Raye set her sights on becoming an engineer. Little did she know sexism and racial inequality would challenge that dream every step of the way, even keeping her greatest career accomplishment a secret for decades. Through it all, the gifted mathematician persisted finally gaining her well-deserved title in history: a pioneer who changed the course of ship design forever.

All of these math crafts and projects are adaptable, so you can use them for several grade levels.

Today’s printables in my series 5 Days of Learning Printables: The World of Columbus and Sons Day 3 For Middle and High School are from Part I. When Columbus Was a Boy (1451 – 1474), Lesson 2. Also, look at my page homeschool middle school and how to homeschool high school page for more fun tips

I have 5 printables which are 3 sets of notebooking pages and 2 minibooks. They are Prince Henry the Navigator, Ships 1400 to 1600, Sandro Botticelli, and the Medici Patrons of the Renaissance.

The first notebooking page is about Prince Henry The Navigator. It has a map of some of the areas Columbus would have been familiar with as a boy.

5 Days of Learning Printables The World of Columbus and Sons Day 3 For Middle and High School

Too, Columbus had a fascination as a boy with the ships of the time.  So the next notebooking pages is to tell a bit about the ships of the middle ages.

Then the next set of notebooking pages is about Sandro Botticelli and it is a 5 page download.

These notebooking pages are one of the reasons we loved this series of books.

PRINCE HENRY NAVIGATOR AND FREE SHIPS NOTEBOOKING

Henry the Navigator

Ships of the 14th to 16th centuries.

It has other topics like art are added in to enrich the understanding and background of the life of Columbus.

Art of that time period or Italian Renaissance Art is something no doubt Columbus would have appreciated or in the very least have been acquainted with.

You can’t hardly study this time period without taking time to study the art of that time period or famous artist of the time and Sandro Botticelli was one we focused on.

Botticelli, Primavera & his other art 1Botticelli, Primavera & his other art 2
Botticelli, Primavera & his other art 3Botticelli, Primavera & his other art 4

Then next the Medici Family is one that Mr. Senior fixated on too. Too, Netflix use to have The Age of the Medici on for free, but it looks like it is now a rental.

5 Days Of Learning Printables About the World of Columbus and Sons day 3

But Mr. Senior 2013 watched the film about the “godfathers” (Medici Family) of the Renaissance and understanding how they fostered a love of science and art in that time period, he found fascinating.

I created a minibook about Cosimo and Lorenzo Medici.

The Patrons of the Renaissance-Medici

War of the Roses

And then lastly, I have a minibook that builds some background information about the War of Roses, which was a series of wars for the throne of England fought between two houses, the houses Lancaster and York.

I think it’s easier introducing this topic too through the life of Columbus since it’s a lot to take in during this time period.

Remember, that for most all of the notebooking pages and minibooks, I have provided the answers to help save you some time too.

And don’t forget I have a huge Renaissance Unit Study and Glass Blowing Unit Study that will enhance your study of The World of Columbus and Sons. Renaissance 1300 to 1600 Unit Study and Glassblowing
