How to Make A Fun ABC Flip Book Fingerprint Activity for Kindergarten

Today I have a fun fingerprint activity for kindergarten. Also, grab my other tips, ideas, and crafts for kindergarten on my page Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum.

I am all for creating your own curriculum, especially in the early years like kindergarten.

While each child develops at their own pace, I have found that learning comes much more naturally to a child who enjoys what they are learning.

How to Make A Fun ABC Flip Book Fingerprint Activity for Kindergarten

Too, when learning is fun children are engaged.

You can use a workbook or worksheets.

Or you can make it even more interesting and let your child have more ownership in creating their own collection of ABCs

So, today we’re creating an ABC flip book fingerprint activity for kindergarten.

5 Ways to Help a Child Learn Letter Recognition

This little book gives you at least 5 ways to practice letter recognition skills:

Start by having your child place the letters in the upper right corner with letter stickers. He can also practice writing the letter if you prefer but this gives your child a good reference for the letters’ correct form. This is the first introduction to letters for the book.

Next, as you work through the letters, have your child name an item or two that begins with the letter. For example, A is for Apple, O is for Octopus. Stamp their finger in ink and onto the page and then encourage them to create that object from their fingerprint.

Find the objects to match up with the letters by taking your book on a letter scavenger hunt throughout the house or outdoors. Encourage your child to say the letter and its sound several times throughout the activity.

Combine the book with letter beads or to spell the simple words your child created with their fingerprint like cat, apple, dog, and etc.

Finally, another easy way for the book for practice is to use it as flashcards. Show the letter stickers in the upper right corner and ask for the letter name or sound.

Their ABC flip book can also go on road trips, out to eat, and while waiting at doctors’ offices to keep little minds and hands busy.

When all the pages are done, you can laminate to make them sturdier and then put them back on the ring for practice throughout the whole school year if you like.

Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum And Crafts

You can use this ABC flip book as part of a larger curriculum.

Additionally, you can use it for a letter of the week approach, do them in order, out of order, as a review, to introduce letters, or in any way that suits your child’s needs and your style.

Besides the creative outlet of putting the book together and practicing letters and sounds with the alpha stickers your child also gets practice when finding words that start with the letter, flipping through to review, and as you add to it each time.

The little ring makes it easy to carry around and easy to flip through.

It’s the perfect size for little hands.

How to Make an ABC Flip Book Fingerprint Activity for Kindergarten

Now, let me give you a simple rundown on how to put it all together:

You will need:

8.5×11 Cardstock
Stamp pads
Binder Ring
Letter Stickers
Large hole punch
markers/crayons

Cut 4 sheets of cardstock into 4.25 x 5.5 rectangles You will end up with a few extra. So use these for free fingerprint art.

On the front cover write ABC lightly in pencil.

Let your child “trace” it with their fingerprints to decorate the frog cover.

Punch a hole through the upper left corner of all the pages.

I used my large industrial hole punch, but you can use a single hole punch. You will just have to punch the paper one or two sheets at a time.

Slip your binder ring through all the holes to create a flipbook that can be carried around or stored in a basket with your other learning supplies.

Add A-Z letter stickers to the upper right corner of each page front and back, you can choose uppercase, lowercase or both depending on what you are working on.

Now enjoy finding objects that start with each letter with your child to fill their book through looking at ABC books, using their imagination, or on a letter hunt.

Give your child markers and or crayons to complete their drawings, turning fingerprints into cute little objects.

Write at the bottom of each page the letter and the word your child has chosen to represent it so that they can see it in writing. G is for grape for example.

How to Fuse Personality and Learning Styles to Choose the BEST Homeschool Curriculum

It’s a sanity saving tip to know how to fuse personality and learning styles to choose the best homeschool curriculum. You’ll love the other tips I have on my page Homeschool Learning Styles.

Understanding you and your child’s personality differences and how it affects learning styles in homeschooling is valuable.

While choosing homeschool curriculum, thinking about my children’s learning personality was not tops on my list. That was a mistake.

How to Fuse Personality and Learning Styles to Choose the BEST Homeschool Curriculum

Today, I’m sharing a few quick tips in how to combine your child’s learning personality and homeschool learning style.

Knowing how your child learns best helps you reduce stress and struggling.

However, before I go further, I want to give you a heads up about learning styles.

There is no way science can fully understand how the magnificent brain takes in information.

But getting a general understanding of why your child may struggle in one subject and excel in another will help you reduce the struggle.

Questions to Know How to Combine Personality with Learning Style

To begin with look at these three tips to help you weigh how a homeschool curriculum will fit your child’s learning personality.

1. What is the approach of the curriculum you’re interested in?

For example, if you know your child has done best with moving while learning then a traditional workbook approach is not the choice for your family.

Too no matter how comfortable you are with the curriculum, if it’s not a fit for your child, you will face resistance.

So, when a curriculum does not fit our child’s personality, it can make stress increase.

Remember, all curriculum falls into one or more approaches.

Next, you need to know what has not worked.

2. What curriculum has NOT worked in the past?

And it may seem like an obvious question, but I’ve learned identifying what will work means to identify exactly what did not work.

Then identify what was the approach of the last curriculum you used which didn’t work.

Third, identify what is your child’s strength.

So much focus is on what a child can’t do instead of what he can do.

3. What is your child’s FAVORITE subject?

Furthermore, to identify with better accuracy what is a child’s learning personality begin with knowing what is his favorite subject.

Next hear my heart when I say be sure it’s your child’s favorite subject and not yours or the one you want them to know because it’s your favorite.

Then, is it a content or skill subject?

Look at my post Skill Subjects vs. Content Subjects: What’s the Difference.

For example, if your child’s favorite subjects are art and music and he struggles with writing, he may be more of a creative thinker.

However, if you child prefers to walk around reading encyclopedia or from his device, he could be analytical.

Matching his strong points to homeschool approaches is vital. For instance, Charlotte Masson puts an emphasis on music and art and delaying language arts.

However, there are more ways to identify your child’s learning personality.

Why Your Child’s Learning Personality is Important

A learning style is not something I thought about when I started homeschooling or even when my kids were struggling. However, had I taken time to learn what is the best learning style for each of my children, I would have saved myself unnecessary stress.

We enjoy the American history game U.S. President Go Fish for studying homeschool history.

And we love History For Kids Go Fish Game series a lot, and with a good variety of history topics we can easily add them to several studies.

Today is all about the U.S. Presidents Go Fish and how to use it.

Also, we are going to take this game and build an entire presidents unit study around it with books, hands-on activities, and videos that will help you dive deep into it without cracking open a curriculum box.

About the U.S. Presidents Go Fish Game

Moreover, the U.S. Presidents Go Fish game is a simple game to add to a presidential unit study.

I like it because it is a quick play game that will pack a lot of educational punch.

Too, it comes with a little mini book that gives instructions and plays like traditional go fish but you collect all 4 presidents from each category (cold war, industrial revolution, reconstruction, etc.).

Or kids can collect presidents by guessing them correctly based on the hints on the card the other player gives.

You can take it on the road, use it in place of your lesson for the day or add it to your morning basket to help start the day.

The one drawback is that as of this date, it only includes the first 44 presidents.

Hands-on Ideas for a President Unit Study

For example, use the Safari Ltd US Presidents busts to introduce and build excitement to the start of a new topic or for art inspiration.

Create your own bust with Crayola Air Dry clay and a flashcard of a president for a model.

All you need is some clay and a toothpick and craft stick to carve and add detail.

Any age can use these but I like that the scrabble tiles are so versatile and don’t seem babyish like some letter tiles might for older kids.

Instead of writing out spelling and vocabulary words use letter tiles. Call out words you would like your child to learn and let them do it with the letter tiles instead of paper.

This activity is easy to modify for any age level by simply using easier or more difficult words.

In addition, here are some vocabulary/spelling words to get you started and let your younger children put them in alphabetical order.

Besides playing the U.S. Presidents Go fish according to the directions you can also use them to create a timeline by pulling 5 or 6 random cards and having your child place them in order.

However, the best part of any science for young children are the hands-on activities.

And children this age learn best through hands-on activities.

Hand-on Activities for a Tree Unit Study

Investigate, touch, experiment, draw, and play your way through learning.

First, study each of the trees parts. Study the leaves, their shape, color, and size, use an app or book to help you identify the tree.

Second, investigate the rings on a stump or cut of wood.

Then talk about how the rings indicate how old a tree is and every knot and scar in it tells a story of fires, storms, etc.

Look at what is growing on it.

Next, check out the different types of bark, peek in knot holes, and let them touch and investigate every part they can.

Third, create a science shelf in your home on a designated shelf, coffee table, or even a little wooden crate.

Make it a place your child can store his collections of leaves, pinecones, birds’ nests, and any other items of interest he finds on nature walks or in the yard.

Fifth, make this Hands on Literature Nature Study Simple Tree Craft

Sixth, create a leaf collection book to gather specimens.

Seventh, Safari Ltd. Toob Trees are the perfect size for little hands and have a variety of uses that make them worth the investment.

They can be used along with blocks and cars in small world play, to create a themed sensory bin, or in a little diorama to give it some dimension.

On a rainy day when you can’t make it outdoors, research the type of trees each one is and learn about it.

Eighth, work in some math by measuring the diameter of smaller trees with a flexible measuring tape.

Too, sort sticks and pinecones into sizes or measure them with a ruler.

Further, use acorns and leaves as counters and manipulatives for simple math problems.

Lastly, make a leaf rubbing by placing leaves under thin copy paper.

Rubbing the side of the crayon across it to bring out the detail for the drawing.

Also, this can be done also do this on the bark of the tree as well.

In addition to this, add videos to your learning day.

However, include your older kids too when you’re doing this kindergarten life science lesson.

Kindergarten Life Science Videos

Not only can videos help a child learn a topic you may be nervous about teaching, but it can give you 10 minutes to work on something else. Your child gains independence.

As well here are some questions to help you teach kindergarten life science.

Because kids are always full of questions, a good place to start with a unit study is ask them a lot of questions like

For example, what kind of tree is it. Use your books, apps, and google to help you figure it out.
What do the seeds look like? Are they acorns, pinecones, a pit, a pod, husk, wings, or seed inside a fruit?

Then, what grows on it?

Moss, leaves, fungi, fruit and what kind of things are on the tree including its own parts as well as those that attach themselves to it, why do they do that?

Is it a good thing or bad? Find out together.

Another one is who lives in it.

A tree study can easily take a lot of rabbit holes learning about the birds, bugs, and other creatures that make trees their home.

Ask your child who lives in a tree and let them dictate a list to you, seeing their words written down is a powerful language learning tool.

Lastly, what do we get from trees.

This is another important question that you can ask your child and write down their answers.

Paper, wood, apples, bananas, nuts, gum, wax, and dye just to name a few things.

Draw a tree on a piece of paper or better yet let them draw it and write down your child’s answers all around it.

Free Amazing American Civil War Lapbook and Hands-on Unit Study

This free amazing American Civil War lapbook is huge. And you’ll love my other lapbooks on my Homeschool Lapbooks page. And I have a HUGE unit study on my American Civil War or War Between the States here and also look at Best Homeschool Unit Studies.

We visited this unit study twice and added more minibooks for several topics we considered in our study of the civil war.

When I introduced this unit study, I shared quotes from both views of the war or North and South.

Free Amazing American Civil War Lapbook and Hands-on Unit Study

First, by Abraham Lincoln.

Second, I shared this quote by Jefferson Davis.

How to Teach About the War Between the States

Too, although the American Civil War was one of the ugliest time periods in American history, you have several ways you can teach it.

When it was our first time covering and my kids were younger, I focused on understanding what was going on in American history during the 1860s,.

For example, we learned about games kids played, the food they ate and defined the areas of the north and south.

In addition, if your kids are older, you can focus on locating the battle sites on a map to give your child a deeper understanding of geography.

Also, some kids may love to learn about the fashion or focus on reading the newspaper of that time, the Harpers Weekly.

Additionally, we’ve studied this unit quite a few times and the minibooks I have can make at least two if not more lapbooks.

Each of my sons created minibooks and we made one large book like layout.

Then, I connected several file folders to make one book-like project.

Secondly, you can make your lapbook like most I create here which are made to open with one file folder and you place all the minibooks inside.

We added an extra top flap because we had so many topics we covered.

So, the point is with this huge lapbook you have many ways use the minibooks and create one lapbooks or many.
