Pumpkin Anatomy | Kids Exploring the Parts of a Pumpkin And Printables

Pumpkin anatomy is a wonderful topic for fall where your child can explore the ins and outs of a pumpkin using their senses. Also, you’ll love my page Fall Season Unit Study {Pumpkins, Leaves, Corn, & More}.

Dissecting a pumpkin allows children to explore every part of it and encouraging them to describe it using all their senses develops language and vocabulary.

Pumpkin Anatomy | Kids Exploring the Parts of a Pumpkin And Free Printables

First, look at vocabulary words for parts of a pumpkin.

Parts of a Pumpkin Anatomy Facts

  • Skin- Also called the rind, it protects the insides of the pumpkin from bacteria and keeps moisture in.
  • Stem- Pumpkin stems are green while the pumpkin is growing and attached to the vine, turning darker green and then brown as the fruit ripens and matures.
  • Tendrils-Help anchor the vine and protect it from the wind. They are also vital in absorbing nutrients for the plant.
  • Leaves- The leaves help to create shade for the fruits and protect them from sunburn or sunscald. They are also edible and are a rich source of various vitamins and minerals.
  • Seeds- Each pumpkin contains about 500 seeds, once they are planted and sprout it takes 90 to 120 days to reach maturity.
  • Fibrous Strands-Also known as funiculi, each of the strands is connected to a seed and to the placenta of the fruit. As the pumpkin grows nutrients travel through these strands to feed the seeds.

Too Many Pumpkins

Rebecca Estelle has hated pumpkins ever since she was a girl when pumpkins were often the only food her family had. When an enormous pumpkin falls off a truck and smashes in her yard, she shovels dirt over the pieces and forgets about them. But those slimy pumpkin smithereens sprout up in autumn, and Rebecca Estelle finds a sea of pumpkins in her garden. A heartwarming classic for more than twenty years, this story shows what happens when one thrifty gardener figures out how to make other people happy with the squash she can't stomach.

Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie (Picture the Seasons)

Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie follows Apples for Everyone in the Picture the Seasons series. This beautifully photographed picture book about everybody’s favorite fall treat is sure to please kids both young and old. The glossy, festive images and lively text are sure to get your family in the mood to celebrate the season.Pumpkins! Who can resist the sight of big, round, orange pumpkins ripening in a field?

How Big Could Your Pumpkin Grow?

Every year, giant pumpkin contests take place at fairs across the country—the 2012 record-holder weighed over a ton! The latest craze is to carve the most enormous pumpkins into racing boats. But what’s next? Why not think really big? Award-winning artist Wendell Minor does just that as he imagines larger-than-life pumpkins decorating some of America’s favorite places—as immense as the Capitol dome, Mount Rushmore, the Brooklyn Bridge, even the Grand Canyon! This celebration of famous landmarks and landscapes plays with concepts of size and scale and is full of fun facts.

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?

How many seeds are in a pumpkin?" Mr. Tiffin asks his class as they gather around the big, medium, and small pumpkins on his desk. Robert, the biggest kid, guesses that the largest one has a million seeds; Elinor, sounding like she knows what she's talking about, guesses the medium one has 500 seeds; and Anna, who likes even numbers better than odd ones, guesses that the little one has 22. Charlie, the smallest boy in the class, doesn't have a guess.

Pumpkins (First Step Nonfiction ― Plant Life Cycles)

Plant Life Cycles

From Seed to Pumpkin: A Fall Book for Kids

This is a clear and appealing environmental science book for early elementary age kids, both at home and in the classroom. Plus it includes a find out more section with activities such as an experiment to show how plants use roots to drink water from the ground and a recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds.

Autumn Harvest

"Mr. Tresselt writes quiet, factual prose about katydids, reapers and threshing, falling leaves, apple-gathering, and the first frost."-

Mr. Hermit Miser and the Neighborly Pumpkin: the green edition

Mr. Hermit Miser doesn’t like his neighbors, and they don’t like him. But when a pumpkin vine sprouts in Mr. Hermit Miser’s yard and makes its way into the neighbors’ yards, but he wants all those pumpkins for pies … well, what is he to do?

With adventures in pumpkin-snatching, failed attempts at baking pies, and pumpkin goo everywhere, this tale about being neighborly in a not-so-perfect way will be an endearing autumn story for all the readers in your circle.

Next, look how to use the fall pumpkin notebooking pages.

Anatomy Life Cycle and Parts of a Pumpkin Notebooking Pages

Also, I have these pumpkin anatomy, life cycle and parts of a pumpkin notebooking pages.

Altogether I have 8 pages in total.

Here are the sets.

  • The first set is Anatomy of a Pumpkin label page. It is the SAME page in two different ways. One page is labeled and the other one is not labeled. Some kids can’t write, some kids struggle with writing and others love to write. You have choices.
  • The next three pages are Parts of a Pumpkin. Print the cards and you can even laminate them and use them over and over so your little ones can label the pumpkin as they investigate it.
  • The next two pages are Pumpkin Life Cylce. Like the anatomy page, one is labeled and the other page is not labeled.
  • The last page is for an older learner who may prefer to just write about fall or a pumpkin.

Also, remember my printables can be folded like minibooks and placed in your lapbooks.

Read how to do that here at my post How to Turn Boring Worksheets into Fun Minibooks – From Boring to Interactive.

Note: My free printables were free for a limited time for my subscribers.

Next, look at some more fun hands-on pumpkin activities.

  • Take the sensory experience even further by making Pumpkin Slime With Real Pumpkin.
  • Focus on the pumpkin’s skin with the Preschool Pumpkin Skin Experiment and test the strength of the skin and more.
  • Pumpkin Science: States of Matter- Let’s kids investigate pumpkin in all of its different states.
  • Pumpkin Experiment: Do Pumpkins Sink Or Float?

Finally, look at this activity to learn about pumpkin anatomy.

How to Set Up Your Pumpkin Anatomy Station

You will need:

  • Pumpkin(s)
  • Knife
  • Magnifying glass
  • Tweezers
  • Plastic spoon
  • Pumpkin Anatomy printables
Pumpkin Anatomy | Kids Exploring the Parts of a Pumpkin And Free Printables

First, start on the outside of the pumpkin and have your child feel and describe the pumpkin. Is it smooth or bumpy?

Pumpkin Anatomy | Kids Exploring the Parts of a Pumpkin And Free Printables

How about the stem? How would they describe the stem of the pumpkin? Is the pumpkin heavy or light?  If you have more than one pumpkin, compare the weight, ask which is heavier.

Knock on the outside, what does it sound like?

Pumpkin Anatomy Station

Now, you can use the printables any way you like but if you are going to be exploring and matching up the parts of a pumpkin I suggest you print out the pumpkin anatomy and the parts of a pumpkin card and laminate them.

This makes it super easy to wipe off if they get pumpkin on them and they can be reused time and time again.

Pumpkin Anatomy | Kids Exploring the Parts of a Pumpkin And Free Printables

Next you want to cut off as much of the top of the pumpkin as you can so they can really dig in there and explore. That is the most fun part, especially for sensory seeking kiddos.

Pumpkin Anatomy | Kids Exploring the Parts of a Pumpkin And Free Printables

Adding tools like magnifying glass, tweezers, and a little plastic spoon makes it a lot more fun to dig.

Let them get in there and explore as much as they like, pulling out seeds and the fibrous strands.

Pumpkin Anatomy | Kids Exploring the Parts of a Pumpkin And Free Printables

Peel off a bit of the tough skin of the pumpkin, so that they can feel it on both sides.

Pumpkin Anatomy | Kids Exploring the Parts of a Pumpkin And Free Printables

Explore the fiber strands, talk about what parts of the pumpkin are edible, and how they feel.

Talk about how the seeds feel and how each one can grow a new pumpkin.

Take some of the seeds and plant them in a little cup of dirt.

This is the time of harvesting rather than planting them but at least they can watch their little pumpkin sprout over the course of a few weeks.

In warmer states you will likely not get your hands on a pumpkin you can cut fresh from the vine so it will probably not have leaves or tendrils.

To give your child an understanding of these parts you can add some silk leaves and a coiled pipe cleaner to help them visualize it better.

Pumpkin Anatomy | Kids Exploring the Parts of a Pumpkin And Free Printables

DIY Candy Corn Decor

Easy DIY Candy Corn Decor is a fun, affordable fall craft project! This wooden candy corn can be used in a holiday centerpiece, vignette, or string it on twine for a seasonal garland!

Then, look how to make this adorable scarecrow candy mason jar.

Scarecrow Candy Jar

The key to keeping the paint from scratching off these jars is preparation from cleaning to removing oils and sealing it.

Easy Fall Crafts To Make And Sell By Kids & Scarecrow Candy Jar

You will need:

  • Smooth glass jar with a lid
  • Raffia and/or twine
  • Tan craft
  • Paint Pens/Markers
  • Waterproof Mod Podge
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Flowers or mini pumpkins
Easy Fall Crafts To Make And Sell By Kids & Scarecrow Candy Jar

You can use any kind of jar that has smooth sides, like a spaghetti jar, smooth mason, jar, and empty garlic jar.

The jars I’m using today are glass Oui yogurt jars that have been cleaned.

I also found lids that fit tightly on them here.

If your jar has label residue on it you can use something like goo gone or just lemon essential oil to soak it in for 10 minutes then scrub it off.

Easy Fall Crafts To Make And Sell By Kids & Scarecrow Candy Jar

Wipe down the outside of the jar well with rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt or oil.

Once dry paint with one coat of waterproof Mod Podge.

Paint 1 to 2 coats of straw-colored paint all over the outside of the jar, drying between coats.

Easy Fall Crafts To Make And Sell By Kids & Scarecrow Candy Jar

Now. give your scarecrows a little hair.

You can either use raffia or twine.

Both work great and I did one of each to show you how they look.

For short hair cut bits of raffia and glue around the edge beneath the lid where it won’t interfere with it closing.

Easy Fall Crafts To Make And Sell By Kids & Scarecrow Candy Jar

For long braids, braid lengths of twine.

Easy Fall Crafts To Make And Sell By Kids & Scarecrow Candy Jar

Then glue it to the jar, again making sure it doesn’t impede the lid.

Easy Fall Crafts To Make And Sell By Kids & Scarecrow Candy Jar

Once all your layers of paint dry, use paint pens to draw on the eyes, nose, mouth, and any other accents like patches, you might like.

Typically scarecrows are hand-sewn with burlap and fabrics so add little “stitches” to the features to give it an authentic scarecrow look.

Easy Fall Crafts To Make And Sell By Kids & Scarecrow Candy Jar

If your jar has a screw-on lid you will want to prep and paint it to blend in or look like a hat.

Seal it with a coat of waterproof Mod Podge or clear sealing spray and protect the inside since that is where food will be kept.

Add a bow with a piece of burlap ribbon to the jar or the edge of the lid.

You can also add flowers, small pumpkins, or other small decorative pieces with hot glue to add a little more color and personality.

Easy Fall Crafts To Make And Sell By Kids & Scarecrow Candy Jar

Or a little bowtie at the base.

Fill with candy and replace the lid.

Readers around the world know and love Laura, the little girl born in the Big Woods of Wisconsin and raised in covered wagons and on wide open prairies. Now Little House fans can learn more about the remarkable story of the pioneer girl who would one day immortalize her adventures in the beloved Little House books in this, the first picture book biography book of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

In winter there is wood to be chopped and great slabs of ice to be cut from the river and stored. Time for fun comes when the jolly tin peddler visits, or best of all, when the fair comes to town.

Almanzo wishes for just one thing—his very own horse—and he must prove that he is ready for such a big responsibility.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

First, hot glue 4 craft sticks corner to corner to form a square frame, allowing glue to harden.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

Glue twine to the bottom corner of the frame and wrap it tightly all the way around ½” apart, glue into place at the end, cut off excess.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

Run a thick line of glue across the top and bottom to hold the lines in place from one side all the way to the other.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

Press another craft stick on top of the glue on top and bottom.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

Cut the angled strings on the backside off the frame to leave a clean easy to use loom.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

Pre-cut piles of yarn 10” long.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

If your child wants to create a pattern for their loom, lay out the threads flat in the order they will be placing them.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

Demonstrate how to weave over and under from one side to the other.

For younger children it may help to take another craft stick and thread it over and under to keep the alternating lines easier for them to identify. It slides easily up the lines as they fill it in.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

For the next yarn switch to the opposite-under and then over.

Repeat continuing up the loom, every so often pushing the rows down so that it ends up full.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

Once the loom is full, cut the ends off of each side just short of the edges of the frame.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

Run a generous line of hot glue along a craft stick and press it down onto the cut yarn edges on both sides.

Farmer Boy Unit Study and Make a Fun Hand Loom Craft

Create a hanging loop by knotting off a loop of yarn and hot glue onto the back of the frame.

I have some American Civil War crafts for kids and a fun raspberry jam recipe. You’ll also love the lapbook and unit study I have on my page War Between the States Unit Study and Lapbook.

A civil war is a war between two groups of people within the same nation.

The American Civil War was fought between North and South when Abraham Lincoln was elected as president in 1860.

Simply put, he wanted to keep the states of the union together and to end slavery.

Fun American Civil War Crafts for Kids and Make Raspberry Jam

It was a war that pitted state against state and brother against brother with heavy losses of life, property, and morale on both sides of the line.

The last time a war had taken place on American soil was in the War of 1812.

It finally ended with surrender, starting with a letter from Ulysses S. Grant to Robert E. Lee on April 7.

On April 26, 1865 Johnston surrendered to Sherman in North Carolina.

American Civil War Books & Resources

Next, look at some of these books to learn about the War Between the States.

Your kids will love these resources and hands-on to learn about the American Civil War.

Pink and Say

As Jethro's family is pulled into the conflict between the North and the South, loyalties are divided, dreams are threatened, and their bonds are put to the test in this heart-wrenching, coming of age story.

Rifles for Watie

Earnest, plain-spoken sixteen-year-old Jeff Bussey has finally gotten his father’s consent to join the Union volunteers. It’s 1861 in Linn County, Kansas, and Jeff is eager to fight for the North before the war is over, which he’s sure will be soon.

But weeks turn to months, the marches through fields and woods prove endless, hunger and exhaustion seem to take up permanent residence in Jeff’s bones, and he learns what it really means to fight in battle—and to lose friends. When he finds himself among enemy troops, he’ll have to put this life on the line to advance the Union cause.

Thoroughly researched and based on firsthand accounts, Rifles for Watie “should hold a place with the best Civil War fiction for young people” (The Horn Book).

A strong choice for independent reading and for sharing in a classroom and for homeschooling. As a homeschool cooperative teacher commented: "The book has launched many discussions in our class. When a person is on one side of a conflict, it is important to remember that people on the other side are also people. Jeff is a perfect model for how treating people with respect can happen even in war."

Bull Run

In this brilliant fictional tour de force, which the New York Times called "a deft, poignant novel," Newbery Medal-winning author Paul Fleischman re-creates the first great battle of the Civil War from the points of view of sixteen participants.

Fun American Civil War Crafts for Kids and Make Raspberry Jam

Finally, look how to make this Civil War era recipe which is raspberry jam.

American Civil War Raspberry Jam Recipe

I was inspired by The Story of the Jam Jar I came across.

Here is a snippet from the site, but be sure to read the whole story at Emerging Civil War.

Tucked away in the collection’s storage at the University of West Florida’s Historic Trust is a simple artifact with a greater history than meets the eye. A brown stoneware jar, about eight inches tall and four inches in diameter, its exterior polished with a raised band around the middle. The story of the jar is told on a scrap piece of paper, reading, Private Frederick Beaver of the Wisconsin Volunteers found this jar when full of jam in a farm house just outside Vicksburg Miss. during the battle of Vicksburg. He carried it home and it remained in the family until December 1959.

I know that Jam Cake was also a Civil War-era food, and finally, jam was a delicious but rare sweet treat that could be carried and kept for long periods of time by soldiers.

You will need:

  • 1-pound fresh raspberries
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 8 oz. mason jar or 2 4 oz. mason jars

If you would like to can your jam for future use it is simple to do without any fancy equipment.

Place mason jar rings in the bottom of a pot deep enough for the jars to be completely submerged in water.

You do not want the glass jars directly on the bottom of the pot.

It’s time to set sail on an adventure with these ship craft ideas from Viking ships to the RMS Titanic. Also, you’ll love the ideas I have on my page RMS Titanic Unit Study and Free Lapbook.

I have a tutorial and loads of other ideas to encourage any type of sailor.

Besides, ships were once the only source of transport between lands,

They were used for exploration, migration, moving cargo, fighting wars, pirating, and even for entertainment.

Egyptians, Romans, Vikings, Pilgrims, Pirates, and more made their way across vast stretches of water on boats or ships.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Ships have come a long way in how they are built, navigated, and used but they are no doubt still important to us.

We have also learned much and made a lot of advancements through ships of old like the Titanic, The Mayflower, The HMS Victory, and the USS Enterprise.

Today’s craft celebrates these ships and a fun and unique hobby that highlights them- a ship in a bottle.

5 Facts About Ships

  1. Ships use the term “knots” a nautical mile per hour in navigation.
  2. The word quarantine comes from the Italian words- quaranta giorni meaning forty days. This comes from the Venetian policy of quarantining ships from places stricken with the plague for 40 days to keep those on board from infection.
  3. Vessels that are intended for navigating coastal and inland waters are usually called boats and ocean-going vessels are called ships. For example, ships are also usually larger than boats.
  4. The Seawise Giant was the longest ship ever constructed at 1,504.1 ft. long in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan.
  5. Furthermore, the earliest historical evidence of boats is found in Egypt during the 4th millennium BCE.

STEM and Geography: How to Build an Ancient Viking Ship

From reading fun books to STEM projects, this Viking Unit gave us a vast insight to where exploration began and helped set the stage for the Age of Exploration. Studying the Vikings is not a standard that is mandated by our state, but I still wanted the kids to be interested in these explorers who were instrumental in changing the world.

Wood Stick Ship

Use wood craft sticks to create your own Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria ships.

Finally, add this fun easy ship in a bottle to your ship craft ideas.

Ship Craft Ideas | How to Make an Easy Ship in a Bottle

You will need:

  • 2-liter or 3-liter bottle
  • Wood scrap
  • White craft foam
  • Wood coffee stirrers
  • Twine
  • White school glue
  • Blue craft paint
  • Brown craft paint
  • Black craft paint
  • Box cutter
  • Clear tape
  • Hot glue gun/stick
Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

First, start by peeling off the label and cleaning out the bottle with warm soapy water.

Use a box cutter to make a “door” on one side of the bottle.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Make it large enough to insert your ship.

However, it has to be small enough that when you lay it down you can’t see it from the sides. I made my cuts 2 ½” by 6” for my 3-liter bottle.

Next, you want to start making your boat model.

Moreover, use scrap cardboard to cut out a boat shape 5” long by 2” wide as well as a piece as long as the back.

And one for either side to make the sides- 1”-1 ½” tall is a good height.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Hot glue the sides to the bottom of the boat and fill in any gaps with additional hot glue.

Be sure to test your ship and make certain that it will fit in the door you cut in the bottom.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Now, paint the ship as you like, to give it a wood look, paint a tan/brown and distress it with black, allow it to dry completely.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

The next thing you are going to do is cut down two wooden stir sticks to about 3”.

In addition, hot glue them into place in the center of your ship, and add two small scrap pieces of cardboard to either side of each one to stabilize it.

Cut sails from white craft foam.

Carefully slide the ship into the door you made on the bottom.

Mix ½ cup of glue with a ¼ cup of blue paint.

Also, tape along the cuts in the bottom with tape, be sure to secure it so the paint mixture doesn’t drip out.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Carefully pour into the opening of the bottle.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Further, rotate the bottle, coating the bottom and slightly up the sides with a paint mixture to create water.

Additionally, add more as needed to cover the very bottom of the boat and you should also be able to easily slide the boat around at this point.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Allow the paint and glue mixture to dry for a few days.

However, you want to do this with the cap off or moisture will form condensation on the inside of the bottle.

Bottle Ship

In addition, once the mixture is dry the boat will be held in place, color the cap with a brown permanent marker to resemble a cork and screw it back on.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Wrap twine around to cover the neck of the bottle and give it a more nautical feel.

Lastly, apply hot glue to the wooden scrap (you can find thick planks of wood at Dollar Tree).

Allow it to cool a bit, press the bottle down into it, and hold it in place until it cools and hardens.

Now, your bottom cut is now disguised.
