The Peregrine Falcon was almost extinct in the 1960s.

The Peregrine Falcon is an endangered species but can dwell in cities.

Additionally, the falcon is a common bird of prey which also includes eagles and hawks.

And the Peregrine Falcon is the most common falcon.

However, there are more species of falcons.

  • The adults have blue-gray wings with dark brown backs.
  • And they are 16 to 19 inches long,
  • Their name comes from the Latin word peregrinus, which means “one from abroad” or “to wander.”
  • Females are slightly larger than the males.
  • Beaks are slate blue.
  • Flight speed can be more than 60 mph.
  • They have long pointed wings.
  • Juveniles are marked with vertical streaks instead of horizontal bars on the breast.
  • When falcons catch birds in a fast dive in the air it’s called a stoop.
  • Besides dwelling in cities, they can nest and perch on cliffs and other tall structures.

  • falconry – An ancient sport of using a trained raptor to hunt.
  • thermal – An ascending current of air caused by heat.

History of Falconry

The use of falcons for hunting was developed around 2,000 B.C. in central Asia.

And by the twelfth century A.D., falconry was widely practiced throughout Europe.

Pictorial records and wall hangings show falconers with birds on their wrists in Arabia and Persia.

Falconry is an art.

It requires long hours, constant devotion, finesse, subtlety and skill. The falconer must train a bird of prey to fly free, hunt for a human being and then accept a return to captivity.

My coral reef lapbook is a fun one to do anytime of the year.

Besides a coral reef being an ecosystem, you’ll want to learn about the organisms which live there.

The Great Barrier Reef is so vast it can be seen from space.

At one time it was thought coral reefs were only in shallow depths, but scientists are discovering that some are as deep as 19000 feet.

However, most coral reefs are found at 150 feet where sunlight penetrates.

What Is Coral

Coral reefs are formed by colonies of tiny coral animals.

It is formed from the hard outer skeletons of tiny animals called polyps.

When the tiny animals die, the old skeletons remain, and new coral animals grow over them.

That is how coral reefs grow.

Too, coral can only grow in warm water because polyps only eat algae.

Moreover, living polyps are what give the coral color. If they die, the reef bleaches. It becomes white or loses it color.

Coral is a type of animal that lives in colonies. Each animal consists of a polyp that is the size of an ant.

Polyps have stinging tentacles which they use to catch small plankton as they drift by.

Coral reefs have a symbiotic relationship with tiny algae called zooanthellae.

The algae live inside the polyp tentacles.

Two Main Types of Coral

There are two main types of coral. One is hard coral with an outer skeleton made of calcium carbonate and soft coral which have bits of calcium carbonate inside their bodies.

Coral Vocabulary

  • algae – a plant like organism that turns light into energy but does not have leaves or roots
  • coral reef – have been described as underwater gardens and coral polyps have the unique ability to thrive in nutrient poor water
  • ecosystem – a community of plants and animals relying on each other to survive
  • habitat – the place where an organism or group of organisms live
  • polyp– it’s a tiny animal that looks like an upside-down jellyfish and comes in many sizes and shapes
  • phytoplankton – a type of plankton that gets its energy from the sun through photosynthesis
  • zooplankton – tiny ocean animals like some jellyfish

Studying Lewis and Clark is not only an exciting action-packed history topic, but it covers many subtopics.

During Lewis and Clark’s exploration, they learned about the plants and animals of the areas they passed through.

In addition, they interacted with Native Americans and learned much about the geography of the area known as the Louisiana Territory.

In less than three years, the Corps of Discovery traveled over 8000 miles.

About the Louisiana Purchase

Why were Americans interested in the Louisiana Purchased? Prior to that time the western boundary was the Mississippi River.

And Americans wanted to trade further west.

In 1803, President Jefferson negotiated a deal with Napoleon Bonaparte, the leader of France.

President Jefferson needed to find a way to explore the land and he wanted to use the natural resources for the good of the country.

However, there were many tribes that inhabited the area west of the Mississippi River which President Jefferson informed Lewis and Clark about.

However, Lewis and Clark has no way of knowing they there were so many Native Americans who inhabited the vast lands.

For example, there were tribes like the Osages, Kiowas, Cheyenne, Crow, Chinook, Sioux, Shoshone, Pawnee, and many more.

Sacajawea was a brilliant, multilingual Shoshone girl who was torn from her home at a young age. This lapbook was created to introduce you briefly to my native land of Texas, a little history, some famous Texans, and a few fun facts.

Moreover, this unit will be expanded on in the future by covering other parts of Texas including the Republic of Texas

While the Alamo and how Texas became a Republic were much more significant topics to be learning as a little girl growing up in southern Texas, I was often fascinated by hearing such names as Ima Hogg and Ura Hogg.

But some things I learned where tall tales. For example, there was no Ura Hogg but there was an Ima Hogg.

Beyond the fun tidbits I learned growing up, I’m excited to share a starting point about the history of Texas.

Texas In Its Infancy

Besides the attack of the Alamo in March 1836 in San Antonio, Texas, other events contributed to the history of Texas.

Texas was a Mexican province and both U.S. and Mexico recognized the abundant land and fertile land.

However, the location of Texas was closer to the expanding United States.

Too through the years I’ve read in some places that Tejanos made up only about 4000 people in 1821.

Tejanos are persons of Mexican descent living in Texas. Today we call them Mexican American.

At the time there were not very many settlers to defend Texas against Mexico.

And Americans were allowed to settle in Texas.

So, in return for the cheap land grants Americans had to become Mexican citizens, accept the Mexican constitution and the religion of Roman Catholic.

As I learned in Texas history growing up this was a strategy Mexico used to try to convert American settlers as an asset by Mexico.

I guess that far back a rebellion was already in the works.
