Help your child complete this human skull anatomy activity using a styrofoam skull from Dollar Tree. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

Whenever fall rolls around I always grab some of the skeleton parts and pieces to repurpose as models in our anatomy lessons.

And this styrofoam skull caught my eye and I immediately knew what I was doing with it.

I had the idea to turn it into a labeled skull like I have seen available for purchase, but they are expensive,

So, unless your child wants to be a brain surgeon such an extensive one is not necessary.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

This activity has several parts that will help your child learn the different bones of the skull.

First, they examine a diagram to learn and mark the various areas.

Secondly, they create the keys to make this activity a game, and finally they play and identify the parts again.

If they oversee making everything from start to finish, by the time they get to the game they are already quite familiar with the different names and sections.

You can read aloud about the facts of the different parts of the skull as your child works on coloring in the human skull anatomy activity.

7 Facts About The Human Skull

  1. The top of the skull (cranium) is made up of 8 bones that cover the brain to surround and protect. The lower part makes up the bones of the face and is made of 14 bones.
  2. Teeth are not considered bones that make up part of the skull.
  3. Besides your eyes, nose, and mouth openings the human skull has many small holes in it known as foramina. They allow nerve and blood vessels to pass through.
  4. Skulls look different and can be identified as male or female, even heritage by the size and shape of them.
  5. The jawbone (mandible) is the only bone in the human skull that moves, it is also the largest and strongest bone in the skull.
  6. In Latin ‘frons’ stands for forehead which is what gives the frontal bone its name.
  7. The skull is not fully fused at birth, this allows for brain growth. Babies are born with soft spots on the top and back of their head called the fontanelles.

Human Skull Anatomy Activity

One of the best things about this activity is that it is self-correcting.

Once your child makes a guess, he can check the color-coded key to see if he is right.

You will need:

  • Foam skull
  • 8 different marker colors
  • Skull diagram
7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

To create a game with your skull you will also need:

  • 2 dice
  • Parts of the skull key-typed or handwritten
  • Craft stick or pencil for a pointer

First, you are going to want a good diagram either in a book or online for your child to follow.

Here is a simple diagram to follow on Neuroscience for Kids.

Next, decide on a color for each part of the skull that they are marking.

Here are the parts:

  • occipital,
  • frontal,
  • parietal,
  • temporal,
  • nasal,
  • maxilla,
  • mandible,
  • and zygomatic bones.

The next step is to have them type or handwrite a key for the colors that each will be and another one with each one numbered.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

Use the colors you have decided on to outline each section of the skull.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

Color each of the sections in the coordinating color. You could also have them paint or cover each section in thin layers of playdough.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

Now you can turn learning the parts of the skull into a game simply by adding a pair of dice and the numbered key.

To play:

Use the numbered key your child made and roll both dice (anything above an 8 is a reroll).

The colored key should remain covered until ready to check their answer.

Whatever number rolled corresponds with one on the key, your child must identify.

Have your child use a skewer, pencil, or craft stick as a pointer to point to the answer.

Play can be as long or as short a time as you like.

4 Fascinating Carnivorous Plants For Kids to Learn About

  1. Venus Flytrap- While this exotic-looking plant looks like it comes from the depths of the Amazon rainforest it is only native to North and South Carolina. They primarily eat spiders and ants and only 5% of their diet is winged. This plant has tiny little hairs that when disturbed trigger a reaction from the plant, if the bug stays for longer than a few seconds the “mouth” of the Venus flytrap closes over the poor unfortunate bug. They dissolve the bug into liquid and absorb it. Fun fact, they rarely eat their pollinators.
  2. Pitcher Plants- Are composed of modified leaves known as pitfall traps, a mechanism with a deep cavity that is filled with digestive liquids that attract and drown its victims in the nectar inside. There are pitcher plants that grow in wetland areas of the eastern part of the US and Canada as well as in places like Australia and Madagascar. They can be anywhere from 6 inches to 36 inches tall.
  3. Butterwort- This particular plant feasts on gnats, springtails, and other small insects. Their method of capture is using their leaves that are covered in fine translucent hairs to secrete a greasy sticky substance. This substance smells like nectar and gleams attractively in the sun.  It secretes enzymes and acids to kill and dissolve prey that the plant absorbs.
  4. Sundews- These are similar to fly paper, they attract insects with a sweet and sticky substance that also holds them fast. Their tentacle-type leaves then curl around it and smother them. About 50% of the species is found in Australia.  While it only takes 15 minutes for a sundew to kill their prey it can take weeks for them to digest it.

Carnivorous Plants For Kids – Venus Fly Trap Craft

You will need:

  • A paper plate
  • 2-3 straws
  • Red craft glue
  • Green craft glue
  • White cardstock
  • Small terracotta pot
  • Beans or small pebbles
  • Green tape or tissue paper
  • Green tissue paper

Carnivorous Plants For Kids and Make a Fun Paper Plate Venus Flytrap Craft

First, paint the inside (the eating surface) red, leaving a small lip unpainted all the way around for the green. Wipe off excess paint with a dry brush to speed up drying time.

Carnivorous Plants For Kids and Make a Fun Paper Plate Venus Flytrap Craft

Paint the backside of your paper plate green all over.

Carnivorous Plants For Kids and Make a Fun Paper Plate Venus Flytrap Craft

And the small lip on the other side.

Carnivorous Plants For Kids and Make a Fun Paper Plate Venus Flytrap Craft

While your main plant piece is drying you can work on the other parts. To create a sturdier stem, I taped 3 straws together with green tape. You can also wrap and tape green tissue paper around instead.

Carnivorous Plants For Kids and Make a Fun Paper Plate Venus Flytrap Craft

Cut the “teeth” which are called marginal spikes out of white cardstock. Bend a bit of the end to give a flat surface to glue them in place.

Carnivorous Plants For Kids and Make a Fun Paper Plate Venus Flytrap Craft

Once the paint on the plate is dry, fold it in half with the red on the inside, and give it a sharp crease.

Carnivorous Plants For Kids and Make a Fun Paper Plate Venus Flytrap Craft

Open it back up and glue the spikes in place all around the inner lip.

Carnivorous Plants For Kids and Make a Fun Paper Plate Venus Flytrap Craft

Hot glue the stem into place on the bottom, you will need to use a good puddle of hot glue and hold it in place until it cools. Glue on a piece of green tissue twisted into a leaf shape.

Fill the pot with beans, rice, or small pebbles to weigh it down and create “soil”. Push the stem into the pot to hold it securely.

September 4th is National Wildlife Day and what better way to observe it than with a wildlife craft to highlight one of the most loved wild animals – the gorilla.

You don’t have to just specifically study just gorillas.

Also, you can cover all the primates – chimps, orangutans, gorillas, baboons, monkeys, and more.

Simple and Fun Wildlife Craft Mountain Gorilla Layered Art Project

But I wanted to focus on the mountain gorillas because they are so seriously endangered.

Eastern Mountain Gorillas are found in the Virunga Mountains that border the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda.

The rest can be found in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.

This wildlife craft is easy and requires little setup.

Not only does it further your study of gorillas but it introduces multiple art techniques, maybe some that your child has never tried before.

8 Gorilla Facts

  1. There are two species of gorilla, eastern and western. Within these two they split into subspecies- eastern lowland, eastern mountain, western lowland, and western cross river.
  2. A Primatologist studies the behavior, biology, evolution, and taxonomy of primates. Famous ones include Jane Goodall (Chimpanzees) and Dr. Dian Fossey (gorillas)
  3. Gorillas are incredibly intelligent and have been observed making and using tools for all kinds of tasks such as turning them into silverware and even using them as tools to measure water depth.
  4. Just like our fingerprints are unique, gorilla nose prints are special and different from one another.
  5. Hanabi-Ko “Koko” was a female western lowland gorilla. She learned over 1,000 signs and understood more than 2,000 English words in her lifetime. She lived to be 46 years old.
  6. They are very social creatures and live together in groups of 5-30 gorillas called troops. Each troop generally contains a dominant male, several females, and their young offspring.
  7. Adult males are called Silverbacks. On average a silverback gorilla weighs almost 400 pounds and stands over 5’ tall on all fours.
  8. Unfortunately, gorillas are critically endangered due to habitat destruction as well as poaching.

You will need:

  • Cream or white construction paper
  • Colorful construction paper
  • Black chalk pastel
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
Simple and Fun Wildlife Craft Mountain Gorilla Layered Art Project

First, start by drawing a jagged/fluffy outline of a gorilla’s head and shoulders on your light paper with a black chalk pastel. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just a general clear shape.

Simple and Fun Wildlife Craft Mountain Gorilla Layered Art Project

Next lay the chalk pastel flat and drag it across the page to fill in the inside of your outline.

Simple and Fun Wildlife Craft Mountain Gorilla Layered Art Project

Smudge the chalk to smooth it out and fill it in more solidly with your finger, or you can use a tissue to blot and smear it.

Then cut a circle out of gray construction paper that is a little smaller than the gorilla head you drew, and cut a small dip into the top, kind of like a heart to create a gorilla face.

Draw on features like eyes, nostrils, and a mouth with your black chalk pastel then glue in place.

French Vocabulary Bracelets

You can also turn these into necklaces using the same methods below but create a longer length to add several words for the week.

Once they have learned the words, have fun helping them create a new string of words and phrases.

You will need:

  • Pony Beads
  • Letter Beads
  • Stretchy String
  • Scissors

First, you are going to want to research and list some words your child might want to use to make their bracelets online or in a French dictionary.

I have a handful of common words they might like to use above.

Set out a little container of red, white, and blue pony beads as well as letter beads along with the stretchy string.

Next, have them lay out the design of their bracelet, you can use just the colors of the French flag or put them in order-blue, white, and red.

Wrap the stretchy string around the wrist to where it is comfortable and add another 2 inches to the length.

Tie a bead on one end of the string to keep the beads from falling off as they are threaded.

Slip the beads on, remember to place letter beads in the right direction.

Your child can opt to fill the entire bracelet with beads, fill it partially, or sparsely.

~Ezra Meeker~

I couldn’t think of a more appropriate opening for this huge list of resources to study the Oregon Trail than the words of Ezra Meeker, who was one of the original pioneer
