The Exploits of Xenophon

More than 2,400 years ago one of the most thrilling war stories in history was being read and discussed in Greece. It was called the Anabasis and was written by a Greek noble named Xenophon, who described at first hand what he did, what he suffered, and what he saw during a campaign against the Persians.

In Exploits of Xenophon, Geoffrey Household cut the Anabasis to a quarter of its length and modernized Xenophon's style. It retells much of the war hero's own story, a superb picture of a valiant Greek army and its impact upon the ancient civilization of the East.

There are many advantages to a unit study outline instead of a fully fleshed out study.

For example, look at these ways an outline guides your study.

Outlines give you a clear structure.
They help break down big tasks into manageable steps.
Extensive lessons plans can make some kids lose focus.
And outline keeps the main topics to be learned on topic.
In addition, you can go down rabbit trails IF you want to. However, for some kids it can be overwhelming. You have the option to go deep or stay on topic with an outline.
Looking at the outline at a glance is a super roadmap. Again, you can go straight to your destination or facts or stay longer on an objective.
By listing an objective it guides you as the teacher to add your own slant.

Additionally, only use the objectives on the topic you’re child is interested in and move on to other unit studies. This would make a shorter unit study.

For example, cover the introduction and perhaps the Persian culture for younger children.

Then save the other topics for when your children are older.

How to Make a Cool Greek Mythology Triorama With Kids

The first thing to do before we build this triorama is to pick your favorite story from Greek mythology. Also, look at my pages Trioramas: How To Create Engaging Visual Narratives For Kids for more ideas and Greek Mythology Unit Study and Greece Lapbook & Fun Hands on LEGO Zeus.

Or you can just go with a peek into Mount Olympus with a few myths and legends.

You can make a triorama any size you like.

How to Make a Cool Greek Mythology Triorama With Kids

I thought this one would be a fun one to make into a mini scene, this one stands just 6” at the point.

A triorama is like a diorama.

It can be made in 2 ways.

It can be a 3 dimensional triangle shape made from a single square of cardboard, paper, cardstock, or poster board.

Or you can create 3 sections depending on your needs.

They are a unique way to highlight a scene from a favorite book, movie, an animal’s habitat, or so many other things.

This Brick Greek Myths book was a big hit and provides wonderful inspiration.

Before we begin with our triorama, let’s break down what Greek mythology is.

It is a collection of stories about the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece.

These stories have been passed down for centuries and are still popular today.

The Greek gods and goddesses were very powerful and had control over different parts of the world.

Zeus was the king of the gods and ruled over the sky.

Poseidon was the god of the sea, and Hades was the god of the underworld.

The gods and goddesses had many adventures and often got themselves into trouble.

They also had many children, some of whom became gods and goddesses themselves.

Finally, look at how to make this fun Greek mythology triorama.

HOW TO MAKE A COOL GREEK MYTHOLOGY TRIORAMA

You will need:

2-8.5×8.5” pieces of cardstock
scissors
Colored pencils/markers
Mythical Realm Toob
Cotton stuffing

First, fold your paper from corner to corner so that it forms a triangle and press a firm crease along the bend.

Open the paper and fold in the opposite direction and repeat the crease so that there is an x crease across the paper when opened.

Cut along one of these creases just to the center point.

Now you can draw out your backdrop on the two triangles above the cut crease.

Because we wanted to make Mount Olympus, we drew some simple mountains in the background and some Greek temples.

Next, add some details and color with colored pencils, markers, or crayons. You can also cut out some buildings and trees to give some dimension to the backdrop.

Fold either side of the cut corner inward and secure with glue, press firmly to form the base.

Because our triorama was set in Olympus we wanted to make it look as if it was coming out of the clouds.

So, we lightly colored the base a blue green and added cotton stuffing to make it look like clouds.

Finally, add in your figures that you have chosen to use.

To add a little more effort to the finished project you can require that your child retell the story they have portrayed or give 5 facts about Greek mythology, etc.

6 Ancient Israel Fun Activities Middle School: How To Make A Topography Map

Today we are going to make a topographic relief map of Israel, using a somewhat unusual art medium, beans.

Using different colors and shapes and sizes of beans helps differentiate the different areas of this Middle Eastern land.

From the Mediterranean sea to the mountains in the coast of Blaine, we are outlining the major topographical differences of Israel.

Ancient Israel was a small country in the Middle East that existed from about 1200 BC to 586 BC.

It was home to the Israelites, a people who believed in one God.

The Israelites were originally nomads, but they eventually settled down in the land of Canaan.

They built a kingdom with Jerusalem as its capital.

The Israelites had many kings, including King David and King Solomon.

David was a great warrior who defeated the Philistines, a powerful enemy.

Solomon was a wise king who built the first temple in Jerusalem.

The Israelites were conquered by the Babylonians in 586 BC.

The Temple was destroyed, and many of the Israelites were taken into exile.

After 70 years, the Israelites were allowed to return to their homeland. They rebuilt the Temple and re-established their kingdom.

The Israelites were later conquered by the Romans in 70 AD. The Temple was destroyed again, and many Israelites were killed.

Despite these setbacks, the Israelites have survived as a people.

6 ANCIENT ISRAEL FUN ACTIVITIES MIDDLE SCHOOL

Try a dish that the ancient Israelites would have enjoyed like this Jacob’s Lentil Stew, by this time you know how wonderful cooking is as part of the learning experience.

HOW TO MAKE A TOPOGRAPHY MAP OF ISRAEL

You will need:

Heavyweight cardboard/cardstock.
Tacky glue
An assortment of dried beans
Sharpened pencils

The first thing we’re going to do is print off a simple topographical map of Israel, like the one I found here at Geography Realm Map of Israel.

We printed a simple map outline and then referenced topographic maps to fill in each section.

Next, you are going to flip over your printed map and lay your pencils sideways, almost flat and rubbing lead by scribbling all over.

You want a good thick coat that covers all the map parts you want to trace.

Now you’re going to take a piece of cardboard or cardstock and slip it behind your map print out.

Take a pencil and trace the outline of your map of Israel onto the blank piece of paper.

This will transfer the lead that you scribbled on the back to the new page.

Lift slightly and be sure that it has been traced everywhere before you completely move it.

This will give you your basic outline.

First decide which beans will represent which topographical feature and create a little key in the bottom corner by gluing the bean and writing what it represents.

You can also use one type to mark the capital.

To create the blue for water you can toss white navy beans into a ziploc bag with food coloring or liquid watercolor and then allow to dry.

Now take your school or tacky glue, and “paint” the section that you want to start with. You have a little bit of working time but I do not recommend painting the entire map yet.

Press the correct beans into the thick glue until you have covered the entire area you need to then move onto the next section.

Repeat until the map is fully covered; to seal the map you can brush a layer of glue over the top of the beans if you like.

13 Living Books Ancient History Your Kids Will Love

Today, I have a list of engaging living books ancient history your kids will love. Also, look at my Ancient Civilizations page for fun hands-on ideas and free lapbooks to go with studying ancient history.

Studying ancient history is a fascinating and wide-reaching topic.

It should be taught in a way that draws a child into the period you’re studying about.

That is what a living book does as opposed to a dry boring textbook which kids can loathe.

13 Living Books Ancient History Your Kids Will Love

Too, when I first started homeschooling, I knew what we were reading for history wasn’t presented to my kids in a way they could understand.

A list of dry boring facts does not stir critical thinking skills or nurture my sons’ love for wanting to learn more.

I wanted my sons to read books like I did while growing up.

Little did I know then, there was a name for a book that is lively, engaging, encourages conversations and that is a living book.

WHAT ARE LIVING BOOKS FOR KIDS

Also, through the years I’ve read many excellent definitions of what is a living book.

Be sure you take time to understand what they are so that when you study any topic, especially ancient history, you can bring the topic to life.

Besides, not all, but a lot of them are older books.

They were written at a time when authors did not talk to children, even very young children. And they were written before there was a banned book list or before libraries adopted politically correct views.

However, one of the best features of living books is that the author usually talk about the topic in a story or narrative form. All ages love stories. We never outgrow them.

Additionally, the author is not a textbook writer but an authority on the topic who has infectious enthusiasm for the topic.

This excites the reader.

Even books that are fictional history, the author can weave in dates, events, and details that are true. However, while the story is untrue it still can bring the history period to life.

It helps readers to understand the stream of time.

Additionally, keep this balance in mind as you learn about living books.

Not all vintage books are living books.

However, if you are considering one that is a classic, look for ones that are not edited and have beautiful artwork especially if it’s a picture book.

Many older print pictures books are beautiful and have a higher reading level than you may think.

What Are Ancient Egypt Hieroglyphs

Imagine writing a letter with pictures instead of words.

That’s exactly what ancient Egyptians did.

Hieroglyphs are picture-like symbols that the Egyptians used to write their messages.

Each symbol, or hieroglyph, could represent a sound, a word, or an idea.

It’s like creating a secret code with drawings.

Ancient Egyptians used these symbols to write on tombs, temples, and papyrus scrolls (a kind of early paper made from plants).

Hieroglyphs were a big part of their daily life, religion, and culture.

What Do Hieroglyphs Look Like

Additionally, hieroglyphs come in all shapes and sizes.

For example, some look like real objects, like animals or tools, while others are abstract symbols.

Here are a few examples:

The Scarab Beetle 🪲: This beetle was a symbol of rebirth and protection. It was often worn as an amulet to bring good luck.
The Sun ☀️: A circle with rays represents the sun, which was an important symbol for the sun god Ra.
The Eye 👁️: Often used to symbolize protection and health. It was believed to ward off evil and keep people safe.

How to Read Hieroglyphs

Reading hieroglyphs can be a bit like solving a puzzle.

Here’s a basic guide to help you understand how to read them:

Top to Bottom: Sometimes, hieroglyphs are arranged in columns, so read from top to bottom.
Look for Symbols: Identify the symbols used. Each one represents a sound or idea.
Read Left to Right or Right to Left: Hieroglyphs can be read in both directions. Look at the way the characters face. If they’re facing the right, read from left to right. If they’re facing the left, read from right to left.
