World War II Homeschool History: Minibooks Causes & Great Depression

Our World War II unit study has been a fun start to our slow start to our year.

Free 5 Causes of War and The Great Depression minibooks for a World War II homeschool unit study and lapbook @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Because there are so many subtopics to consider under this time period, this unit study has been about painting broad strokes.

World War II

Like all unit studies, you can only cover so much material though it seems like you want to cover it all. Covering too many details can set us back in our unit study because the main points can get obscured.

So today, I have two more free minibooks, which are 5 Causes of World War II and The Great Depression.

There can be numerous causes to World War II, but highlighting about 5 of them for kids at the high school level is a great start for broad strokes.

Too, The Great Depression could be a unit study by itself, but by tying it in here to this time period, Tiny gets a larger picture of how life was back then.

Remember like most all of my minibooks, I give you choices because I like choices. So I have two minibooks, but they come in two choices. One minibook has facts in it and the other minibook is blank to allow your child to fill in his own research.

I offer these two choices because sometimes time is limited and you can decide to use one minibook filled in and one blank minibook, or both blank or both filled in.

Lapbooks are just small nuggets of quick facts and this one is no different.

We are almost ready to start adding the minibooks to the lapbook, but in the meantime we store them in a ziploc bag until we are sure we don’t want to create anymore.

World War II Homeschool History: Staged For War & Quick Facts Minibooks & Links

After we started our World War II homeschool history unit study with a hands-on activity from  Great World War II Projects You Can Build Yourself, I played a bit of time period music for us both to get the spirit of the 1940s.

Free minibooks for a World War II unit study and lapbook. Grab Staged for War and Quick Facts over @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

The tune is catchy and reminded us of Tiny’s ballroom dance classes, which he really enjoyed. So we started our day with a bounce from that music.

Before I share the free minibooks, Tiny chose and read in one day the book Story of the Second World War and we liked it because it gave a quick overview of facts.

World War II books for a homeschool unit study @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

What life was like in the 1930s to 1940s along with World War II are such extensive topics that it could overwhelm a student.

Reading a book like Story of the Second World War gives us facts in a nutshell. From there we can then take trails about what we want to learn in this unit study.

World War II

The other spine we are using and reading through is a high school textbook online which is Digital History.

So the first two minibooks in this lapbook I have for you are Staged for War and Quick Facts.

Remember too, like most all of my minibooks, I have a blank minibook, which allows your student to add in his own research.

In addition, most of the time I offer a minibook with a few facts added. I do this because our lapbooks have always been an enrichment to our homeschool unit studies and time can be limited for your student to research each subject.

For example, on this minibook, Tiny researched for one of the minibooks and the other one he used the premade one with a few facts.

Because this is a high school unit study, I also use the cursive font I have paid for to prepare these minibooks and for this unit study.

My goal with all of my unit studies is to continue to strengthen Tiny’s skills in both reading and writing cursive. So some of the minibooks are in cursive.

This unit study is easy enough to use with a middle school kid too, but still at a higher grade level.

Download below, print, research and have your students write in the minibooks and keep them in a ziploc bag until the end of the unit study and lapbook when we place them on the file folder. I will have a picture for you then.

Because we do our unit study and lapbooks too as we plod along, I never have lapbooks in one giant download.

I also do it this way so that you can grab just the parts you need instead of downloading minibooks you may not need.

Lewis and Clark - The Ultimate Guide @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are two of some of the most well-known and famous explorers in American history. Every time I read about something or someone they encountered, I can wait to read about it and discover some other gem they uncovered. We never get tired about reading about their journey.

So today, I have gathered resources from the four corners of the world (okay..maybe just the U.S. corners) to share the Lewis and Clark Expedition – The Ultimate Guide. This gives you the go to place for what you and your kids want to learn about Lewis and Clark.

It’s important to tell you that though more resources may exist, I have spent time combing through tons of them to find ones that I find are more useful in helping you to teach about the Lewis and Clark expedition.

4 Clever Ways to Store Writing in Lapbooks

February 11, 2016 | 9 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

You know I’m not the crafty loving type of person, but I know that learning with lapbooks stick. Today, I’m sharing 4 clever ways to store writing in lapbooks. Not only are these good ideas for long term storage, but they are also out of the box ideas that nudge reluctant writers to put pen to paper.

First, look at these ideas that work for younger kids or even kids that are not so young, but hate writing.

4 Clever Ways to Store Writing in Lapbooks @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus
List Making

Though there are three ideas on this one page above, I list them as one way to store writing because they are similar.

The lapbook above comes from one of our earlier frog lapbooks. One idea is the sandwich shaped book.

Any shape makes learning fun and lapbooks are perfect for creating shaped pages.

Not only is the shape of the sandwich book perfect for helping your child to remember what they are writing about, but the small size breaks down writing into bite (corny pun intended) size pieces.

Though I love shaped books for this age, list making is also another way to gently coax a writer to write.

And then, any book that folds up and fits into a pocket is just plain fun. The sheet in the pocket is a maze that one of my sons wanted to do and he colored the snake on the outside and we folded it up.

Look here at my post How to Turn Boring Worksheets into Fun Minibooks – From Boring to Interactive.

List Making Inside

The list making book and the sandwich book are attached by a brad. You can use one brad so that the book is flip up style or use two brads so the book opens from left to right or vice versa.

Really a number of these short books can be used for writers up until middle school.

2. Vocabulary Flip Book Open

The next way to store writing is through a vocabulary book with lift tabs.

This two page spread above is big enough for eight words.

Vocabulary Flip Book Inside

When the tab is lifted, the definition is underneath. I didn’t even create these books. It was a simple paper cut and fold.

The books are in our Plains Indian lapbook. Of course with these books, no brad or staples are needed, just paper and glue. They have held up nicely over the years.

Then the third way to store writing is shown below in our Westward Ho lapbook and unit study.

Word In a Barrel Sentence strips inside

I love this way we stored our writing, which is sentence strip style.

Some unit study topics or lapbooks are more suited than others for out of the ordinary shapes and our Westward Ho was one of them.

Inside view sentence strips

I made the Barrel of Words and the boys wrote on the sentence strips. The sentence strips are not intimidating looking when you want your child to love writing.

What I like about this third method of storing writing is that depending on my child’s age, I can have them write as many strips as I want them to. There is something about writing on separate strips that doesn’t make writing overwhelming. Of course, piece the strips together and your child can have one or two pages, but they don’t need to know that do they?

It is just another creative way for a child to not only love what he is learning about, but to feel that writing is manageable.

High School Writing Lapbook

This fourth way I stored writing now moves on to middle and high school level.

This short research paper comes from one of my sons in ninth grade and it is from our Amazon lapbook and unit study.

By this age, your teen really needs a normal size page to write on so you need to be a bit more creative.

High School Writing Lapbook Inside 1

First, I added another inside flap to the lapbook. Then again I used brads just because they are so versatile.

I added two brads at the bottom outside of the page protector and pushed it through the flap..

High School Writing Lapbook Inside 2

And then added two brads inside the page protector and pushed it through the flap.

By opening the page protector and only pushing the brad through the back side of the page protector, it stays open at the top so the research paper can be top loaded.

High School Writing Lapbook Inside

By also mounting the research paper on acid free paper and using good quality tape, it has kept the pages straight as they are pulled in and out of the page protectors.

Though tempted to use cheaper products, using higher quality products like acid free paper keeps precious things like writing looking awesome for a longer time.

There are more ways to store writing, but these 4 ways have been timeless for us and fit a variety of lapbooks.

How do you like to store your child’s writing?

How to Turn Boring Worksheets into Fun Minibooks – From Boring to Interactive

September 13, 2015 | 10 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

How to turn boring worksheets into fun minibooks is a great way to make worksheets go from boring to interactive.

I have been hankering to share a few more of my lapbooking how-tos because lapbooking is something I totally believe in up to and including the high school years.

Oh sure, it can be crafty, but if you have been following me for any length of time you know it’s the appeal of wild, unrestrained learning that appeals to us and not so much the crafty part.

How To Turn Ordinary Worksheets into Fun Minibooks. A great way to include your middle and high school students in lapbooking @ Tinas Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Read my article here, Beware of the 3Cs of Lapbooking.

What does this have to do with today’s post, how to turn boring worksheets into fun minibooks?

Well today, I have a quick and easy, but very useful tutorial of how you can turn any page into a minibook.

Hands-on Homeschooling – Lapbooking

I will share a few reasons why this tutorial has been so handy for me through the years, but first look at this easy tutorial.

Grab any sheet you want to include in your lapbook.

1. Grab your worksheet to go in your lapbook @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Fold it in half long ways.

At this point too, me or the boys eyeball about dividing it into fourths.

2. Fold the worksheet in half longways @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

I usually do like an accordion fold back and forth.

3. Accordion fold and put outside cover on minibook @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Only the part of the worksheet that is the back of the accordion fold is glued to your lapbook, not the whole length of the page.

Your child can create his own cover, like Mr. Senior 2013 did above or you can create a cover for the minibook.

Including Middle and High School Students When Lapbooking

There are several reasons why I love this easy tutorial.

  • If lapbook topic printables are too babyish for your middle and high school students, you can still include your older kids by having your kids write a page or by you creating a worksheet for them.

  • Also, there are a wealth of freebies that my boys may want to include in the lapbook and we can still add them as minibooks. No sense reinventing the wheel.

  • There is no need to choose between notebooking and lapbooking, you can just simply add your notebooking pages to the lapbook.

The worksheets turned minibooks suddenly elevated a boring worksheet into an interactive tool.

I have always touted the benefit of hands-on learning even up to high school.

Also check out Free Lapbooking Resources.

And lapbooks are a way to present informational not only visually, but in a way that appeals to a child of any age.

Do you want some other creative ways to homeschool?

I hope you enjoyed this quick tutorial, which is useful for many lapbooking topics.

Hugs and love ya,
