How to Shake Up STEAM With Geography For Middle School

Science intimidates me, but I’ve always managed to teach it through one of my other strengths. I had a chance to shake up STEAM with geography. I used a country crate about Poland and used it to teach STEAM with geography, history and hands-on activities as a unit study. I love pick up and go resources that have everything in a crate that makes teaching STEAM and geography easy. Click here to read about it and grab it!

I stalked the mailbox waiting for this country crate. For review purposes, I was given this product for free and I was paid for my time. However, paid for my time does not mean paid off. All opinions are my own and I will always tell you what is on my mind. Not every product gets a positive review. But because I carefully sort through numerous offers for reviews, it usually means that I’m giddy about the product when I do accept it. Read my full disclosure here.

Science intimidates me, but I’ve always managed to teach it through one of my other strengths. So when I had a chance to shake up STEAM with geography by receiving a country crate about Poland from STEAMworld, I jumped at the chance. I can’t wait to tell you about the country crate, tell you what you get in one, and how I used it.

First, though, I don’t want you to miss both the sweet discount and giveaway at the bottom. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway and use the discount code.

After reading recently that STEAM jobs are on the increase, I’ve been looking for easy ways to incorporate science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics in my unit studies, but that takes a lot of time.

Too, nothing takes the steam (corny pun – I couldn’t resist) more out of a hands-on project then missing items to do them with.

Knowing that the crate comes with everything that we need in it to learn about Poland is a huge time savings tip.

Right now 3 countries are available: Poland, Japan, and Morocco with more coming!

(Confession – the paper and template for the rooster are missing in the picture because Tiny couldn’t wait to get started.)

Look at what you get in each crate:

  • materials for a math project,
  • materials for a science project,
  • materials for an art project,
  • materials for an engineering project,
  • one student activity book, which includes instructions for all STEAM projects, and
  • one country scrapbook style guide, which includes back ground information, fast facts and landmarks about a country.

What you do not get in a crate are items you normally would have in your homeschool room like rulers, pens, pencils, scissors and glue.

One of the things I like most about the crate and ideas for each subject is that they were uncomplicated and not lengthy.

It has just the right amount of laid out activities without telling you what to do each day.

If you’re new to unit studies, you may want a unit study that is more comprehensive, but that can also be overwhelming.

Right now in this season of my homeschooling, I want the freedom and wiggle room to learn at our pace without day to day lesson plans.

For example, for the first week and half or so we worked on the art project.

Look at my post Polish Paper-Cutting (Wycinanki): Day 10 Hands-on Learning.

The student activity book, or guide, has one or two pages of explanation with a hands-on project.

After reading the art activity, we took our time working on the art project. After learning about the beautiful art of polish paper cutting, we researched art patterns as well as read about the history of Poland.

In addition to the 8-page student activity book, the 4-page scrapbook style country guide has background information and quick facts about Poland.

Then, we took another couple of weeks watching a few YouTube videos and reading books from the library.

Both guides are springboards if you want to research and read longer about a topic like we did.

What I also like is that each project your child can work on independently. While I love teaching my kids at the middle school and high school level, I know it’s important to choose resources that support a child’s natural desire to learn independently.

Having each day’s lesson plans laid out is not exactly the way to do that.

Instead, giving your child guidance, some background information, and bringing the information together under a geography topic gives a middle school or high school student a beginning point.

Having an idea for each subject in a geography unit study also keeps your geography study balanced. Following a unit study approach means that you normally want some starting point for subjects about a topic and it means to introduce it in a balanced way.

I know I’ve been guilty of being unbalanced while covering unit study. While there is nothing wrong with digging deep on a topic you and your kids are excited about, a few subjects could be overlooked.

Using STEAMworld, gave us not only ideas to cover more in-depth, but hands-on projects for each subject.

I’ve confessed that when the boys were little that I took a hands-off approach to teaching because it either intimidated me or sounded like a lot of work for maybe a little return.

After homeschooling longer, you learn that kids retain information better when they are engaged and through hands-on projects. However, the next mistake in learning how to teach unit studies is that you can complicate hands-on projects. It’s almost enough to make you quit unit studies.

That is another reason I’m tickled to use the the country crates. Simple, but meaningful projects while learning about Poland keeps unit studies from being either boring or overly complicated.

However, the best reason I love STEAMworld is the focus on STEAM.

When it comes to geography and history it’s our first love; I can easily add in more content. But my boys have always loved science and want more ideas when we are doing unit studies.

STEAMworld may be a good fit for your family:

►If you love STEAM and want to include a framework for geography and history with it.
►If you love STEAM and want to fold it into your unit studies.
►If you want all the important supplies for hands-on projects at your finger tips and not have to worry about gathering all of them.
►If you love in-depth geography and history and prefer to add it yourself while having ideas for STEAM.
►If you prefer to have a beginning point and an easy hands-on idea for each subject in STEAM.
►If you want to encourage your kids to work more independently in unit studies, the guides are not bulky, but helpful and simple.
►If you prefer to do your own in-depth planning and don’t need to be told what to do day to day.
►If you don’t want to come up with a hands-on idea for Science,Technology, Engineering, Art or Math. An idea is provided for each subject tied to the country you’re studying.
►If you have multiple ages of children and want them to work together on a topic, but not necessarily on the same lesson. There is enough wiggle room in the guides to allow each child to work on a sub-topic that may interest each one.

I think you’ll love these country crates and I can’t wait to see the other country crates that are released.

What I love too is when a company is generous and hosts a sweet giveaway in addition to giving you a discount.

Be sure to enter the giveaway because there will be two winners and you have several chances to win. You never know; you may win. Don’t forget to use the coupon, as well as to share with your friends.

Hope you win!

Medieval History for Homeschool Middle School

July 12, 2016 | 17 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

When I got our box of the Medieval History Pack history curriculum from Beautiful Feet Books, I almost passed out from excitement.  Also, look at my page homeschool middle school for more fun tips.

Medieval History for Homeschool Middle School using Beautiful Feet Books or history living books @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

I was given free curriculum from Beautiful Feet Books and I was paid for my time. However, paid for my time does not mean paid off. All opinions are my own and for sure I will always tell you what is on my mind. When I do accept a review, it’s because I’m giddy to tell you about it. Read my full disclosure here.

For just a moment as I opened up the box from Beautiful Feet Books, I had a flashback to my public school high school years when I learned about the Middle Ages from a history teacher who wasn’t a rule-follower.

My teacher planned a huge high school medieval feast to kick off our study and because I answered the most questions correctly about medieval history, I was crowned medieval queen. Complete with costumes and activities, I won’t ever forget the fun of learning about history in the older grades.

Memory making moments from my high school years stuck with me and hands-on history and living books became part of my must-haves for my homeschool.

Beautiful Feet Books has been part of my homeschooling journey for many years because it fits my criteria of how history should be covered in the middle and high school years.

When my first son, Mr. Senior 2013 was in Kindergarten, I used Early American History with him. Next as I folded into my day Mr. Awesome 2016 and Tiny, we used the Early American and World History and the Medieval History Sr. High levels.

You can read my article, When We Used Beautiful Feet Books as our History Spine to grab more tips about how I use Beautiful Feet Books.

Beautiful Feet Books Living Literature for Middle School Homeschool @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

However, because Tiny was young when I studied medieval history with my older two sons, I felt that Medieval History Pack was a better fit for us right now.

Living Literature Bringing Medieval History Alive

Look at some of the reasons why we love using the Medieval History Pack.

  • Living books should be a staple of any great course about history and we just can’t get our fill of them. Tiny started off reading The European World, Beowulf and then on to King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. We always have trouble following the teacher’s guide because once you get hooked on a living book, you can’t put it down. It’s important to mention here that though I have used a lot of living history books in our study, I value the fact that Beautiful Feet Books spends time culling over the very best ones so that I don’t have to. Again, with this level, we were not disappointed.
  • If you have kids that are middle or high school level, I know you can relate to the struggle in keeping history entertaining and educational because so many programs want to move away from interactive activities to exclusive book learning. Making us choose to either prepare a child for rigorous history in the upper grades or making it entertaining seems to be two choices homeschool curriculum providers throw at us. I reject that mentality which is why many times I come back to Beautiful Feet Books. They show us we can and should have both when we homeschool our older kids.
Beautiful Feet Teacher's Guide @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus
  • Also, the teacher’s guide gives me the freedom to incorporate living literature as a unit study because it is filled with teaching ideas, but it is not overly complicated. In other words, I don’t want to have to follow a schedule exactly, but just want a framework to work within.
  • However, if you run short on time the teacher’s guide has just enough guidance if you want it. For example, it has vocabulary words for the reading, ideas for hands-on activities, and of course geography and history helps.

How to Make Learning About Medieval Geography Stick

Medieval map work using living literature @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Another reason that we wanted to use Beautiful Feet Books was to incorporate geography in a hands-on way that sticks.

Don’t get me wrong. Computer programs and pre-labeled maps are super resources, but learning the nitty-gritty of geography happens when you can dive into it.

Middle Ages Map using Beautiful Feet Books @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Making a map of the medieval world as suggested in the teacher’s guide is what piqued our interest. Creating a hand-drawn map and taking time to label regions and cities helps Tiny to remember what Europe looked like back then.

We are off to a great start using his map and we can’t wait to add more to it as we will continue on with our study this year.

Does Teaching History Develop Essential Thinking Skills?

Beautiful Feet Books has never been about having to move fast with quick bites of history. I don’t want my sons rushed when it comes to understanding the ideals of the past because it affects the way people think today.

Too, let’s just face it. When it comes to medieval history, we not only want to dig deeper, but we want our kids to savor learning about knights, castles and jousting.

That takes time.

You’ll love these ideas for literature and hands-on ideas from Beautiful Feet Books.

Look at these other things I want you to know about.

  1. It is a 35 week program, which means it is a year long program. You just can’t rush the richness of the points learned in the literature.
  2. If you are looking for a day by day guide, this is not your program. If you want wiggle room to add your own spin to it but to have some ideas for each week, you’ll love the flexibility of the teacher’s guide. I added in our own science. Look at Medieval Chemistry and Homeschool History.
  3. With the book choices, it easily adaptable for high school. Look here at the suggested credits for high school.
  4. The teacher’s guide has answers and the definition of the vocabulary words in the back of the book. Did I mention it is in beautiful color?
  5. I did notice a few links that were not up to date, but I found them easily on the home page of the suggested link. Again, having the other links for extra reading is a huge benefit to helping Tiny understand this time period and I appreciate him being able to use his iPad along with reading the books.

I won’t hide my obvious bias and love toward Beautiful Feet Books because it has been around for a long time and there is a reason why. Simply, it works.

Learning about history should be action-packed and motivating. With a framework to work with for studying medieval history, you’ll love this curriculum.

You’ll want to see how I used one of the living books, The World of Columbus making 5 days of Free Printables for a unit study. Also, look at 8 Ways to Teach Homeschool History Other Than Chronologically and Should Homeschool History Be Covered in Chronological Order?

What do you think, will this curriculum work for you?

True Heroes History iPad App – Pssst!! Another Sweet Giveaway. Giveaway Closed.

This Giveaway is Now Closed. Thank you for scooting by and please visit my other links and stick around! The winners are listed at the bottom.

True Heroes History App Homeschool Review @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

I was given a free download of True Heroes History App and I was paid for my time. However, paid for my time does not mean paid off. ALL opinions are my own and for sure I will always tell you what is on my mind. Your experience may vary. When I do accept a review it’s because I am excited to tell you about it. Read my full disclosure here.

When I heard history and interactive, I was excited about Tiny using True Heroes 1781 History iPad App by Jolly Books.

I say it often, but I always want you to know that I don’t accept all the numerous requests for reviews that I get. I have to get giddy and it has to be something you or I will want to take a closer look at.

Okay, it doesn’t hurt either when I can giveaway some sweet things to you too.True Heroes Mystery iPad App @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus
So for the last couple of weeks, Tiny has been playing True Heroes 1781 History App and the first thing that caught my eye was the year. Tiny, not so much, but that is the beauty of interactive play.

Through the years, I have tried numerous ways of gently introducing key or significant dates to my sons without resorting to humdrum put you to sleep memorization.

Right away, I recognized 1781 as a key year or turning point in the American Revolution. Picture association with a key date helps a visual learner or even history hater to at least be aware of that time period.

History Mystery Interactive iPad App

As home educators we know we have to teach dates, but committing key dates to our child’s memory, not so easy.

Though the app says it is for K-6, you know how I feel about history. It is a content subject and grades can be subjective.

One of the gems that I really liked about the app as we went through it was that the focus was not just on George Washington, but it starts off with stepping back in time and experiencing things that people of that time period experienced.

There is a lot of play time before you even get to the story of George Washington. At first, we were looking too quickly to get to the part about George Washington.

But I had to catch myself thinking that way because really the sequence of events follows the way I think history should be taught, which is to get the full flavor of life at that time period through a character’s eyes.Colonial Village @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool PlusFirst, you step back in time to a village complete with barn, a colonial house, store, print shoppe (yes, I loved how they used time period spelling), a tailor and an inn to name a few.

Colonial House @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool PlusYou start off by collecting water, building a fire, planting seeds, gathering your crops and buying a basket.Crops Growing @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus
Too, I loved the word list definition game because the game not only piques interest for that time period, but it gives a list of words like dishonest, thoughtful and brave to build moral virtues.

I really want to let you know something right now that is a little off the path of what I am talking about because it is important to me and that is the developers are indie app developers.

This stirred me to support them because they can weave things like teaching moral character and values into their apps, something that would probably not be important to a great big huge company.

After playing a game about defining character building words, Tiny used items from the inventory or saddle bag to buy a basket. But first, some math is involved like fractions.

Learning about planting and storing crops in the cellar is a fun part about learning about everyday life. Buy a shovel head and it turns dry corn into corn for the chicken.

Benefits to an Older Child

  • One thing the game touts that also had me hooked was intuitive reasoning.

In other words, not all actions have specific directions and laid out directions. They have to deduce some of the actions through interactive play.

I feel this is a great tool to use for an older child as he investigates and reasons out what he needs to do next.

  • Too, the facts he gathers along the way through hands-on play feeds a budding history buff who may be allergic (okay, okay) to books.
  • I find too that even though girls love this type of play, boys really benefit from the media center.

Did I tell you that Tiny couldn’t resist showing me when he was shooting bottles at a shooting range?

Chicken House @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

However, there are some things that I feel may be a bit above a Kindergartner’s head.

The visual layout of doing day to day activities will appeal to the very young, but one part we noticed is where you hear a chicken cluck.

The child knows then to go the barn and is told that chickens need dry corn.

He is then asked, “How will a chicken eat corn that way?”

A child has to deduce that he has to go the store, buy a shovel head and when it’s in his inventory/saddle bag, he has to tap on it and the corn turns into feed.

That part,  I feel is above the way a Kindergartner would reason to find the answer.

Help from an older sibling or mom would help him to get past that part. Then again, some Kindergartners have the patience of Job and might be able to find out quicker by tapping on all the items.

Canning, preserving and even recipes are some of the nifty little things that your child will also learn about. Cutting vegetables are just too cute when you cut them to put them in jars.

There is even an element of mystery to find out who is “Q”.

Baby George Washington @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool PlusYoung George Washington @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Of course, I don’t want to spoil all the surprises like at the museum or at the end.

History That Sparks a Love for Auditory Learners

There is one part that though we were pleasantly surprised at toward the end when it got to the part about George Washington.

Washing in debate @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool PlusGeorge Washington @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

It switches from an interactive game to an audio story telling mode.

From the time George Washington was born to being the first president, the audio story telling mode is a nice plus if you have an auditory learner like I do.

Tiny really liked sitting back and having the story read to him.

Don’t forget, I have a free American Revolution unit study and lapbook that would fit so well with this app.

Mystery, intrigue, fun in everyday mundane life and absorbing facts about the first president, this sweet little find of an app is a great compliment to any unit study about colonial life, the American Revolution or George Washington and the best part is that you can use it with all of your kids.

Guess what? I love that my sponsors love you and want you to try it out.

So today, I am giving away 3 of these apps. You have a chance to win, so don’t think you won’t win because I have to give them to somebody.

A tisket, a tasket a back to homeschool basket.

I just love that nursery rhyme and I especially love hosting this giveaway for the third year in a roll.

This year I have a homeschool organization basket giveaway filled with some of my favorite things that I swoon over.

Homeschool Organization Giveaway @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

I have all kinds of fun organizing tools in it.

From bins to a basket, from pins to pens, from zippers to hanging storage, I had fun picking out all kinds of fun things to help you get inspired.

It’s just overflowing with “organizational-ness”.

But that is not all!

I am also including my new Glam It Up package homeschool planner. {Note if you bought this already, I will refund you your money.}

Glam It Up Homeschool Planner @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool PlannerThen I love when my sponsors go the extra mile and love homeschoolers too.

Plus I think geography goes hand in hand with being organized.

Like Maggie Hogan says of Bright Ideas Press, “Geography—you’d be lost without it!”.

Something for the Big Kids

So one item they are including in my giveaway is the geography program, North Star Geography, (the digital download so the boys can read on their devices.)

I love using it for the boys because it emphasizes hands-on learning even at the junior high and high school level.

I am a stickler about keeping learning hands-on at the upper grades when most curriculum providers move into an all textbook approach.

So Bright Ideas Press is giving away a digital download of North Star Geography.

North Star Geography and WonderMaps Bundle

Oh, but that is not all.

Something for the Little Kids

They are also giving away in this basket the Ultimate Geography and Timeline Guide. (Paperback, 352 pages K-12).

Note: Since this is a physical book, it will be shipped to you.
From their website: This one source book will provide you with everything you need to competently teach geography from kindergarten through graduation. Part lesson-plans, part idea book, part unit study and part inspiration!

GIVEAWAY DETAILS

Begins NOW: Friday, August 1st and Ends: Friday, August 8th at 9:00 a.m. CST.

The winner will be selected using random org and will be notified afterwards.  And also because you can’t be a once a month email reader, if my winner does not respond to my email within 24 hours, I will choose another GIGANTO winner.

Easy Rules. They always are.

  • There will be only one BIG GIGANTO WINNER TAKE ALL!
  • U.S. residents only.
  • Do as many of the options below for entry or as few of them as you want.  I want to give you every chance to win, so I have 7 options.

7 OPTIONS FOR ENTRY

A lot of my followers don’t like complicated widgets, so I won’t use one.  Easy commenting on this blog post is how you will comment for each entry.

Follow the instructions carefully on each entry because I will check before I announce the grand prize winner.

1. You have to follow by email.  Commenting on this blog post letting me know that you are an email subscriber is your first easy entry.

2.  Comment on this blog post letting me know what you want to see more of on my blog, i.e more lapbooks, more unit studies, more printables on ?, more how to’s on ? or something completely different or you may just like the pace fine.

This is your chance to let your voice be heard on why you are following me.

By the way, I will have a hard time restraining myself to talk to you because if I comment I mess up the numbers for entry.  Please know I luv your comments and value each one.

3.  Re-share this giveaway from my personal Google Plus profile page Tina Robertson (not my Google Plus Page Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus).  Here is the link to that post.

This is how to re-share a post: Click the forward arrow at the bottom of the post.  The arrow is pointing to the right  and when you hover on it, it says “Share this post”.

Click, comment and share. I will be notified automatically when you do.

Don’t forget to come back to this blog post and comment on this blog post saying that you did that.

4.  Share this giveaway on Pinterest AND post the link of your pin in your comment on this blog post. Don’t say “Shared this” when you comment on this blog post saying that you did.  Do say “I shared this and here is the link (insert link).”

To get the link for the exact pin, click on the Board you pinned it on and then click on the picture/pin and then you will see the exact link in the browser. A repin counts too.  Here is my pin:

6. Comment on Bright Ideas Press Google Plus page

https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/102612999875880635044/+Brightideaspresscurriculum/posts

saying something to the effect “that you would like to win the explorers basket on Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus Blog”.  Then, post on this blog post letting me know that you did.

You don’t have to give me the link to your Google Post unless you know how to do that, but DO give me the DATE that you commented on Bright Ideas Press Google Page.

Also, if you know how to +1 me on Google Plus, please do so at +Tina Robertson.  If not, this entry is not contingent on doing the +1 or giving me the link.  It is a qualified entry though when you give me the DATE you commented on their pages and when you say that on your post on this blog post.

7. Comment on Rainbow Resource Google Plus page

https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/102612999875880635044/+rainbowresource/posts

with the same instructions just like you did above in option number 6 for Bright Ideas Press.

(Note though I luv ya, I don’t use facebook anymore, so posts on a facebook account do not count as an entry.)

That’s it. I hope you win!

But I have something else I have to tell you about that is hot right now and that I am so excited about.

Today is the release of  The Big Book Of Homeschool Ideas.  I am a co-author of a couple of chapters in this great resource and I still am not finished reading it yet though I got it early because it is a WHOPPING 562 page download chock full of goodness.

55 moms share 103 topics about homeschooling.  Don’t you want to peek at the topics? You can.

Look at a few pages of the table of contents I snipped for you below.

Purchase here The Big Book Of Homeschool Ideas or click on the big graphic above.

{Just so you know: When you get a link on that page, download INSTANTLY.  Coming back later, even weeks later to download something you purchased will not guarantee that the link has not expired and that you will not get your purchase.  Download your product and save it instantly to avoid problems of downloading later.}

Guess what? That is not all.  This is a blog hop.
