Fall is a busy time for bats. In the fall, bats in the eastern U.S. search for food and mates before they begin hibernation.

Some can hibernate for more than 6 months.

Too, this year Bat Week is October 24th-31st.

It is an annual celebration, celebrated internationally, that raises awareness about the need for bat conservation.

Why are these little things so important?

While most of us are sleeping, bats are hard at work pollinating flowers, eating lots of insects, and spreading seeds that will grow new plants and trees.

5 Facts About Bat Anatomy

First, look at some fun facts about bats.

  1. Bat wings have a bone structure similar to that of the human hand.
  2. In between the bones are flaps of skin that are called the wing membrane.
  3. Small insect-eating bats like the little brown bat can have as many as 38 teeth, while vampire bats have only 20.
  4. Bats species that have thumbs that extend out of the wing as a small claw. They use this claw to climb up trees and other structures and reach a high “launching point” for flight takeoff.
  5. Bats have a highly adapted respiratory system to keep up with the demands of powered flight. During flight the respiratory cycle has a one-to-one relationship with the wing-beat cycle.

Bats (New & Updated Edition)

Though people often think of bats as scary, bats are really shy, gentle animals. There are nearly 1000 different species of bats, and they live on every continent except Antarctica. Some are tiny, but the giant flying fox bat has a five-foot wingspan! Popular science author Gail Gibbons also discusses the efforts to protect the world's only truly flying mammals. A final page offers additional facts.

Bats: An Illustrated Guide to All Species

Bats: An Illustrated Guide to All Species explores bats and their fundamental role in our ecosystems through lavish full-color photographs and lively narrative. From the Giant Golden Crowned Flying Fox, a megabat with a wingspan of more than five feet, to the aptly named Bumblebee Bat, the world's smallest mammal, the number and diversity of bat species have proven to be both rich and underestimated. Nocturnal, fast-flying, and secretive, bats are difficult to observe and catalog. This richly illustrated handbook presents bats' evolution, biology, behavior, and ecology. It offers in-depth profiles of four hundred megabats and microbats and detailed summaries of all the species identified to date. Complete with an introduction exploring bats' natural history and their unique adaptations to life on the wing, Bats includes close-up images of these animals' delicate and intricate forms and faces, each shaped by evolution to meet the demands of an extraordinarily specialized life.

The Secret Lives of Bats: My Adventures with the World's Most Misunderstood Mammals

Stories and science surrounding the beloved bat, from an ecologist who has dedicated his life to the curious creature.

Few people realize how sophisticated and intelligent bats are. Merlin Tuttle knows, and he has stopped at nothing to find and protect them on every continent they inhabit. Sharing highlights from a lifetime of adventure and discovery, Tuttle takes us to the frontiers of bat research to show that frog-eating bats can identify frogs by their calls, that some bats have social sophistication similar to that of higher primates, and that bats have remarkable memories. Bats also provide enormous benefits by eating crop pests, pollinating plants, and carrying seeds needed for reforestation. They save farmers billions of dollars annually and are essential to a healthy planet. Tuttle’s account
forever changes the way we see these poorly understood yet fascinating creatures.

Fun Bat Anatomy Toilet Paper Roll Craft | 8 Bat Science Activities Preschool

First, fold over ½” of the top of the tube on both sides, overlapping them and securing with hot glue.

Fun Bat Anatomy Toilet Paper Roll Craft | 8 Bat Science Activities Preschool

Press together the opposite end and punch two holes through both layers.

Fun Bat Anatomy Toilet Paper Roll Craft | 8 Bat Science Activities Preschool

Paint the entire toilet paper tube on both sides and allow it to dry.

Fun Bat Anatomy Toilet Paper Roll Craft | 8 Bat Science Activities Preschool

While the paint is drying you can ready the craft foam for wings.

Trace one wing on half the craft foam, be sure to include the thumb claw on the top of the wing and the arches on the bottom of the wing.

Also leave a small tail point in the center.

Fun Bat Anatomy Toilet Paper Roll Craft | 8 Bat Science Activities Preschool

Fold the foam in half and cut out your wing on both sides so that it is symmetrical on both sides.

    Leave the center uncut.

Fun Bat Anatomy Toilet Paper Roll Craft | 8 Bat Science Activities Preschool

Trace the outline of the wings and the area from the top of the wing down to the finger with a black marker.

Fun Bat Anatomy Toilet Paper Roll Craft | 8 Bat Science Activities Preschool

Once the paint is dry hot glue the bottom, be careful not to block the holes you made.

Glue on googly eyes and draw on the mouth/nose.

Fun Bat Anatomy Toilet Paper Roll Craft | 8 Bat Science Activities Preschool

Run a pipe cleaner through one punched hole in the bottom and out the other, trim it down.

Twist small pieces of brown pipe cleaner around the bottom of each to form toes.

Fun Bat Anatomy Toilet Paper Roll Craft | 8 Bat Science Activities Preschool

Glue the body in place to the center of the wings, let the tail hang below the roll.

Fun Bat Anatomy Toilet Paper Roll Craft | 8 Bat Science Activities Preschool

Now if you want to take your bat craft to the next level you can create or help your child write out their own labels for the bats anatomy.

Depending on your child’s age you can have more detailed labels like individual fingers or just leave it general for younger children.

Encourage your child to create details on the island like coconuts, palms, trees, animals, birds, etc. by pressing them into the Play-Doh for support.

8 Pirate Play Doh Map Fun Ideas and Sensory Tray

You might be surprised by what they come up with completely on their own, like a raft for their marooned pirate to escape on.

8 Pirate Play Doh Map Fun Ideas and Sensory Tray

The dough sticks nicely to the wood and cleans off well.

8 Pirate Play Doh Map Fun Ideas and Sensory Tray

You can also extend the lesson by having them re-create their playdough map on a paper map with crayons.

Encourage your child to copy the island they made including identifiable features like trees, animals, etc…

Finally, look at this fun felt anatomy activity.

Felt Anatomy Activity – Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled

The felt is sturdy and will hold up for a semester or years to come so that you can continue to add to it or use it in different ways.

I like that this is a self-correcting activity.

Your child can place everything where they think it goes and then check it against a diagram and correct anything that might need it. Much more fun than a boring old worksheet don’t you think?

Even if you do not consider yourself an artist or crafty you can make this or help your child make it! I am going to walk you through easy peasy steps.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

    You will need:

    • Tan felt
    • 6-8 additional felt colors
    • Scissors
    • Cardstock
    • Pen or marker
Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

First, start by just drawing the top half of a stick figure using a pencil onto your tan felt.

I started with a really large piece of felt (12×18) for the body to make sure I had enough room for the organs.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled

And I cut mine so that the body was almost 15” long but you can make yours larger or smaller.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Once you are happy with your stick figure, you can fill the body out more, rounding out the head and making wider outlines for the arms, neck, and torso.

Don’t worry about any misdrawn lines, this is going to be the back.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

    Cut out the body.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Now find a diagram with the major organs or whatever body system you want to make and cut your organs out of different colors or shades of felt.

You just need to imitate the general outline.

I did not worry too much about proportions, depending on the age of your child and your skill level you may or may not want to require more precise dimensions.

You may estimate the sizes and then trim down each one to be sure it fits in the body you made.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Add additional organs beyond the major ones if you like.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Place your body outline on a large tray.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Have your child begin layering on the organs in the correct place using google or your favorite reference book.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Type up the names of each organ, or better yet have your child do it to practice typing, formatting, and to familiarize them with the names.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Cut out each one in a small strip to use for labeling.

Now they can begin adding labels to the correct spots.

Put everything into a ziplock baggie to keep and use at a later date.

I have gathered up some resources and books about the human body for preschoolers. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

One of the most fun and basic science topics to cover with your preschooler is anatomy.

When teaching this age, it is a good practice to include lots of hands-on activities.

Fun Resources and Books About The Human Body For Preschoolers

It can be so much fun for both of you.

Puzzles, games, colorful books, videos, and your preschoolers own natural curiosity can teach them so much better than an expensive boxed curriculum.

    Teaching Preschoolers About Human Anatomy

When your child is a toddler, they are quickly learning about body parts like toes, eyes, belly, etc.

They are soaking in information and learning at an incredible rate, and this continues through those preschool years when they learn so much through play.

At this point, it is a great time to move into learning about our senses, organs, how our skeleton works, and more.

They can learn a lot through imaginative play- like setting up a simple doctors’ center with good books for them to examine along with pretend tools, engaging videos, and simple crafts and activities.

Finally, look how to make these cute fall felt leaf sachets.

Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers- Felt Leaf Sachet

    You will need:

    • Felt- fall leaf colors
    • Embroidery floss
    • Large eye needle
    • scissors
    • Cotton stuffing
    • Essential oil
Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

You may wish to also purchase a thimble to help protect their little fingers.

First, cut your felt into smaller squares, slightly larger than the size of the leaf you would like your child to sew up.

You will need 2 pieces for each leaf. I have linked some precut squares above that are great for this.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Holding both pieces together, draw a leaf shape with a permanent marker or free hand, and cut out both leaf shapes at the same time so they are perfectly matched.

You can of course make these any size and shape.

    Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

I recommend starting small, like no larger than 4”, and with a very basic oblong, or oval shape.

The more complicated shapes with lots of turns may frustrate those little beginning hands, save those for once they improve their basic stitches.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Thread a long piece of embroidery floss onto the needle and knot the ends together.

And double knot over the top of the first to make it larger so it won’t pull through the felt.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

You can choose thread that matches or contrasts, I love the contrast of thread against a different color felt.

Hold both leaf pieces together and show your child how to press the needle carefully through one side and out the other, pulling the thread all the way taut but not so tight that it gathers up the felt.

Have them continue around ¾ of the way.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Stuff with a little cotton filling.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Use a pencil to fill corners and any longer skinny sections.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Continue sewing the rest of the way around, knot the end close to the felt, and then cut off any excess threads.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Once finished you can scent it by adding a few drops of essential oils to the felt and refresh it as needed.

These felt fall leaf sachets are wonderful used for dramatic play or displayed around the house.

They can even be attached to some twine to create a lovely handmade swag for the mantle or bookshelf.
