The Hobbit: Illustrated Edition

In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling farther than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep to whisk him away on a journey to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon....

“A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible.

J.R.R. Tolkien 4-Book Boxed Set: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

When Thorin Oakenshield and his band of dwarves embark upon a dangerous quest to reclaim the hoard of gold stolen from them by the evil dragon Smaug, Gandalf suggests an unlikely accomplice: Bilbo Baggins, an unassuming Hobbit dwelling in peaceful Hobbiton.Along the way, the company faces trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and worse. But as they journey from the wonders of Rivendell to the terrors of Mirkwood and beyond, Bilbo will find that there is more to him than anyone—himself included—ever dreamed. Unexpected qualities of courage and cunning, and a love of adventure, propel Bilbo toward his great destiny . . . a destiny that waits in the dark caverns beneath the Misty Mountains, where a twisted creature known as Gollum jealously guards a precious ring.

Who Was J. R. R. Tolkien?

Best known for his epic Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien was born in British-occupied South Africa. His early life was full of action and adventure. Tolkien spent his childhood roaming the British countryside with his family and could read and write by age four. He was naturally gifted with languages and used this skill as a signals officer in World War I as well as in his fantasy writing. By creating alternate universes and inventing languages in his work he demonstrated that imaginary realms were not just for children. Fondly remembered as the “Father of High Fantasy,” Tolkien’s books have inspired blockbuster movies and legions of fans.

You could also challenge your child to create it on their own, using the tutorial from Chalk Pastels The Hobbit Art Lesson – You ARE an ARTiST!

You could also take your creativity outdoors and make a Hobbit Hole Fairy Garden  in a container.

Literature Analysis

And literature analysis should start in middle school although your child can be introduced to these concepts prior to middle school.

First, explain what is literature analysis.

It means understanding what the techniques are, then identify the techniques in the books your child reads and then doling a brief essay explaining what he identified.

Look at these easy helps for literature analysis to help your child understand that every book has these elements.

  • Theme
  • Plot
  • Setting
  • Character
  • Point of View
  • Mood

Each person has their reasons for loving the story. Try to draw out the reasons your child loves it.

For example, we love it because not only is it strong fantasy, but it has elements of fairy tale and even a medieval time period feel.

List of Characters in the Hobbit Novel

Additionally, look at a list of the characters in the novel.

Your child can focus on writing about each one or comparing character traits.

  • Bilbo Baggins
  • Thorin Oakenshield
  • Gandalf
  • Gollum
  • Smaug
  • Bard

About J.R.R.Tolkien

Also, look at these few facts about J.R.R. Tolkien if you want to do an author study.

  • He was born John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.
  • In addition, he was born on January 3rd 1892 in Bloemfontein, England.
  • Too, he was recognized as one of the finest philologists (study of literature) in the world.
  • However, he is best known as the creator of Middle-earth.

Then, although Tolkien created Middle Earth, his stories draw from myths, fables, and fairy tales.

For example, look at some of these elements and ask your child if some of these same concepts are developed in other literature.

  • dwarves, elves, and trolls
  • talking animals
  • riddles and runes. Runes were old letters originally used for cutting or scratching on wood
  • dragon
  • the treasure trove

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

Help your child complete this human skull anatomy activity using a styrofoam skull from Dollar Tree. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

Whenever fall rolls around I always grab some of the skeleton parts and pieces to repurpose as models in our anatomy lessons.

And this styrofoam skull caught my eye and I immediately knew what I was doing with it.

I had the idea to turn it into a labeled skull like I have seen available for purchase, but they are expensive,

So, unless your child wants to be a brain surgeon such an extensive one is not necessary.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

This activity has several parts that will help your child learn the different bones of the skull.

First, they examine a diagram to learn and mark the various areas.

Secondly, they create the keys to make this activity a game, and finally they play and identify the parts again.

If they oversee making everything from start to finish, by the time they get to the game they are already quite familiar with the different names and sections.

You can read aloud about the facts of the different parts of the skull as your child works on coloring in the human skull anatomy activity.

7 Facts About The Human Skull

  1. The top of the skull (cranium) is made up of 8 bones that cover the brain to surround and protect. The lower part makes up the bones of the face and is made of 14 bones.
  2. Teeth are not considered bones that make up part of the skull.
  3. Besides your eyes, nose, and mouth openings the human skull has many small holes in it known as foramina. They allow nerve and blood vessels to pass through.
  4. Skulls look different and can be identified as male or female, even heritage by the size and shape of them.
  5. The jawbone (mandible) is the only bone in the human skull that moves, it is also the largest and strongest bone in the skull.
  6. In Latin ‘frons’ stands for forehead which is what gives the frontal bone its name.
  7. The skull is not fully fused at birth, this allows for brain growth. Babies are born with soft spots on the top and back of their head called the fontanelles.

Human Skull Anatomy Activity

One of the best things about this activity is that it is self-correcting.

Once your child makes a guess, he can check the color-coded key to see if he is right.

You will need:

  • Foam skull
  • 8 different marker colors
  • Skull diagram
7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

To create a game with your skull you will also need:

  • 2 dice
  • Parts of the skull key-typed or handwritten
  • Craft stick or pencil for a pointer

First, you are going to want a good diagram either in a book or online for your child to follow.

Here is a simple diagram to follow on Neuroscience for Kids.

Next, decide on a color for each part of the skull that they are marking.

Here are the parts:

  • occipital,
  • frontal,
  • parietal,
  • temporal,
  • nasal,
  • maxilla,
  • mandible,
  • and zygomatic bones.

The next step is to have them type or handwrite a key for the colors that each will be and another one with each one numbered.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

Use the colors you have decided on to outline each section of the skull.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

Color each of the sections in the coordinating color. You could also have them paint or cover each section in thin layers of playdough.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

Now you can turn learning the parts of the skull into a game simply by adding a pair of dice and the numbered key.

To play:

Use the numbered key your child made and roll both dice (anything above an 8 is a reroll).

The colored key should remain covered until ready to check their answer.

Whatever number rolled corresponds with one on the key, your child must identify.

Have your child use a skewer, pencil, or craft stick as a pointer to point to the answer.

Play can be as long or as short a time as you like.

The Respiratory System Lung Craft For Kids

8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

You will need:

  • 2 brown paper bags
  • 2 straws
  • tape
  • Black marker
  • Red marker
8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

Start by having your child use a black marker to draw the bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli on each paper bag.

It doesn’t have to be perfect, you just want them to cover each of the different parts of the lung.

8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

Next, have them use a red marker to label each of these parts as well as the right and left lung to reinforce what they are learning.

8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

Slip a straw several inches down into one bag, bunch it closed, and tape it closed tightly around the straw. You want to be sure it is sealed so the air doesn’t leak out.

8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

Repeat on the other side.

Hold the straws close together and wrap the tape around them to form the trachea(windpipe).

Now they can label the trachea by writing it on the tape.

8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

The lungs are ready to use. To demonstrate how lungs inflate and deflate your child will hold the straws in their mouth and inhale and exhale.

You will want to explain that the paper lungs are doing the opposite of what the lungs inside of them are doing as they are exhaling to fill them and inhaling to retract.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

I have 7 human body facts and a fun kids human body t-shirt project. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

When you are learning about organs and different systems a human body t-shirt project is a great way to help your child understand where everything is in relation to each other.

Make your shirt over time, layering on organs from the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems as you learn about each throughout your studies.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Too, you can design everything at once as a large project for your human body unit study.

What I really like about doing this on a shirt as opposed to a flat piece of paper is that it helps, especially young children, understand how each organ works together in each system and how they fit together inside the body.

It is also a very frugal project; you can grab a plain white tee from the craft store or even Walmart for around $.3.00.

And use craft paints you already have on hand for a craft/science activity that makes a lasting impact on them.

Hands-on Ideas for Kids about the Human Body

Next, add some of these resources to your human body unit study.

16 Human Body Books & Hands-on Resources

Add a few of these fun resources whether you do a couple of lesson plans about the human body or a unit study.

Also, look at a few facts to share with your children.

Human Body Facts

Here are some interesting facts about each of the major organs to go over while your child paints their shirt.

  • Trachea. The trachea is surrounded by c-shaped rings of hyaline cartilage that keep it from collapsing.
  • Esophagus It is a hollow, muscular tube that carries food and liquid from your throat to your stomach and it is made of muscles that push the food down.
  • Stomach. Stomach acid Is strong enough to burn your skin, this is why it burns when you have acid reflux. Your stomach is lined with mucus that protects it from the acid.
  • Lungs.Your left and right lungs aren’t exactly the same. The left lung is slightly smaller, allowing room for your heart. Your left lung is divided into two lobes and the right lung is divided into three.
  • Liver. The liver is one of the largest organs in the body. It is roughly the size of a football, weighing about 3 pounds in the average-sized person.
  • Gall Bladder. The Gallbladder stores bile and helps to digest fats but if your gallbladder is removed, it doesn’t affect your digestion that much.
  • Large Intestine. The function of the large intestine is to absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food and also to get rid of any waste product that is left over.
  • Small Intestine. If you pulled your intestines out straight they would measure about 22’ long but are only 1’ in diameter.
  • Heart. Your heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood a day and there are 20,000 miles of blood vessels running throughout your body.

How to Make a Human Body T-Shirt Project

You will need:

  • White t-shirt
  • Acrylic craft paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Paint markers/pens
  • Anatomy Reference photo
  • Cardboard
7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

First, slip cardboard inside the shirt to protect the backside from paint.

You can just flatten out a shipping box and cut it to size.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Smooth it out as much as you can.

Use a pencil to lightly sketch or mark out where each of your organs will be, you will be painting over it later.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Use a paper plate as a palette for all the colors you choose. Too, you can opt to paint each its actual color or choose one color to paint all organs for each of the systems.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Paint each of your organs, overlapping as needed. I find it is much easier to use a flat brush with an edge to get cleaner outlines.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Allow the paint to dry between colors to avoid smearing.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

When you are happy with your design allow everything to dry completely.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Now, you can go back in with a black paint pen and outline everything and add a little more detail if you wish. You can even label each organ if you like.

I am covering crafts from every age group from preschool to high school and every series from the original trilogy to Mandalorian.

5 Fun Star Wars Facts

  1. The word “Ewok” was never actually used at any point in Return of the Jedi. Rather when the toys came out they were named as Ewoks.
  2. Yoda’s original name was going to be  Buffy, in the original script it was Minch Yoda.
  3. There is a small Polynesian island called Niue, 1,500 miles off the coast of New Zealand where collectible Star Wars coins are accepted as legal tender.
  4. Theaters were not excited about showing Star Wars, as a matter of fact less than 40 theaters agreed to book showings of Star Wars when it was released before Memorial Day.
  5. Han Solo’s most memorable line was ad-libbed, you know the part where Princess Leia says “ I love you” and he responds back with “ I know”- totally unscripted.

Finally, look at this fun activity to make Star Wars soap.

Star Wars DIY Projects- Star Wars Soap

You will need:

  • ¼ pound melt and pour soap base
  • 1 teaspoon oil- coconut, olive, palm, or castor
  • 2 teaspoons beeswax pellets
  • 5 drops of essential oil
  • Mica powder
  • A Star Wars mold shape of your choice
Make Cool Star Wars Soap and 15 Star Wars DIY Projects

You will also need:

  • Glass container
  • Craft stick for mixing

First, cut the soap base into small squares, about 1” to help it melt faster and more evenly.

Make Cool Star Wars Soap and 15 Star Wars DIY Projects

Place soap pieces into the container. When making a small batch I like to use a mason jar because it is easy to clean up and pours into the molds nicely.

Make Cool Star Wars Soap and 15 Star Wars DIY Projects

Melt in the microwave in 30-second increments, it should not take more than 45- 60 seconds for this amount.

Make Cool Star Wars Soap and 15 Star Wars DIY Projects

Remove from the microwave and stir in beeswax pellets and oil until well combined.

If making only one color you can stir in a small amount of mica powder at this time, if you want to make each soap a different color leave it until after the next step.

Make Cool Star Wars Soap and 15 Star Wars DIY Projects

Stir in essential oil until it is your desired scent strength.

Make Cool Star Wars Soap and 15 Star Wars DIY Projects

Pour into each of the molds.

Make Cool Star Wars Soap and 15 Star Wars DIY Projects

Next, add a small amount of the chosen color to each mold and stir quickly with a toothpick to mix. Be sure to scrape all along the edges as well as in the center.

If you want a little more time to mix each color pour into one mold at a time and reheat until melted again. Continue until all molds are full.

Make Cool Star Wars Soap and 15 Star Wars DIY Projects

Let the mold sit for several hours until cooled and completely hardened before removing from the mold.

When you remove the mold take a small knife and smooth off the excess soap.

Store in a cool dry place until ready to use. For use keep out of direct water.
