Free Horse Unit Study for Your Horse Loving Kids

While I did gear this unit to mostly middle schoolers I included a few resources that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Books about Horses

First look at one or more of these books which can easily be a spine.

Horses: The Clearest Recognition Guide Available

This book is designed for all those who love horses. Farm Anatomy: The Curious Parts and Pieces of Country Life

Country and city mice alike will delight in Julia Rothman’s charming illustrated guide to the curious parts and pieces of rural living. Horse Life: The Ultimate Guide to Caring for and Riding Horses for Kids

The complete beginner’s guide to horses and riding for kids 8 to 12

Whether you’re just starting out or already have a horse of your own, you’ll learn how to ride, how to stay safe around horses, and how to develop a healthy and friendly relationship with them.

Black Beauty

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. Black Beauty is a perennial children's favourite, one which has never been out of print since its publication in 1877. It is a moralistic tale of the life of the horse related in the form of an autobiography, describing the world through the eyes of the creature. In taking this anthropomorphic approach, the author Anna Sewell broke new literary ground and her effective storytelling ability makes it very easy for the reader to accept the premise that a horse is recounting the exploits in the narrative. The gentle thoroughbred, Black Beauty, is raised with care and is treated well until a vicious groom injures him. The damaged horse is then sold to various masters at whose hands he experiences cruelty and neglect. After many unpleasant episodes, including one where he becomes a painfully overworked cab horse in London, Black Beauty finally canters towards a happy ending

Misty of Chincoteague

Marguerite Henry’s beloved story of a wild horse’s gentle colt—winner of a Newbery Honor! On the island of Chincoteague, off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland, lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely-seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her—that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can’t live without her.

Breyer Freedom Series National Velvet Horse and Book Set

Horse and book set: National velvet is Enid Bagnold's unforgettable tale of a horse-loving girl with aspirations of jumping Glory. A story about perusing dreams and taking chances, National velvet follows the adventures of 14-year-old velvet Brown.

Hands-on Activities about Horses

Include fun hands-on activities every chance you get for maximum impact.

When kids of any age are engaged and having fun with a subject, they love they will always learn more!

If you don’t have horses, sign up your child for horseback riding lessons in your area.

If horseback lessons are out of your budget or you just want to let your child work for it a little more, consider reaching out to a local barn and inquiring about work programs.

Sometimes they trade out manual labor (like mucking stalls and washing horses) for riding lessons.

If you’re looking for a literature-based unit to do for an Arctic unit study, you’ll love Julie of the Wolves. Be sure to grab more ideas on my page Arctic and Inuit Unit Study Free Lapbook – Hands-On Ideas and also on my page Best Homeschool Unit Studies.

Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George is a wonderful book for reading aloud or it can be an exciting adventure as an independent reading chapter book.

Julie of the Wolves Free Hands-on Arctic Unit Study

It makes the perfect addition to a winter or Arctic unit study.

Too, I’ve pulled together some of my favorite resources to go along with the Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George to help you put together your own unit study.

And I have rounded up vocabulary words, videos, additional books, and of course plenty of great hands-on activities.

About Julie of the Wolves Book

First, Julie goes by two names Miyax to her Eskimo village and as Julie to English speaking friends.

The story tells of the adventures of Julie after she runs away from a forced marriage to live in the wild Arctic fighting for survival, following the way of her people.

But will she choose to continue this way or return to civilization?

There are 3 books in the series, but we are going to focus on the original for this.

In addition, this story is a great base for a unit study as it covers Eskimo life, snow/winter, animal habits and habitats, and the emotions of growing up.

You can go in the direction of studying the book from a literary angle, diving into Inuit life and culture, studying the animals and habitats mentioned in the book, or a combination of all.

Hands-on Ideas for Learning About the Arctic

Always include some fun hands-on ideas in your unit studies to keep the kids interested and make the points really hit home.

  • Arctic and Inuit Unit Study. Free Lapbook – Hands-On Ideas. Be sure to grab my lapbook, ideas for studying animals, making snow goggles, soap carving and making a salt dough map.

  • sandpipers

Next, add in some other reference books.

Other Arctic Books and Resources

In addition, Nature Anatomy is a go to spine for anything nature related.

Julie of the Wolves Free Hands-on Arctic Unit Study

In this book I found a couple pages on snowflakes, animal life like caribou, seals, fish, snowy owls, and other birds of prey that are found in Arctic regions.

Another book in the series Ocean Anatomy covers polar bears, penguins, seals, Narwhal, and whales.

But also sea ice, life under the ice, glaciers, and Icebergs.

And Safari LTD Animals may be considered for young children, older kids love them too.

Older kids can use them in dioramas, as inspiration for an art project or to create an inviting display.

Additionally, YouTube has wonderful videos.

The Ultimate and Beautiful DIY Homeschool Unit Study Planner

June 29, 2022 | 1 Comment
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

An ultimate and beautiful diy homeschool unit study planner should stand alone as your homeschool planner.

One huge mistake is trying to fit a few planning pages for a unit study into your homeschool planner.

A unit study is a completely different approach than traditional curriculum. The pages should reflect your way of teaching.

What that means is that besides planning a unit study page, your planner should have an objective page, a way to track your unit studies and lesson planning templates.

These are just a few of the unique pages you should have in your unit study planner. But what is a unit study? Here is my definition which I have used before.

Unit study curriculum takes one topic and includes as many subjects as possible. It builds an entire curriculum around the topic covering subjects like language arts, math, reading, art, history, science, and geography with hands-on application.

Next, look at these 5 features of this beautiful planner.

  1. This a DIY planner. You print pages in your download.
  2. It is a colorful planner.
  3. Detailed lesson planning pages are divided for multiple ages.
  4. Learning objective and assessment pages are included.
  5. More than 1 planner cover is included for variety and the BEST
  6. thing is that my forms are VERY DETAILED. I’m not creating USELESS BLANK pages. I create pages which guide you in planning.
The Ultimate and Beautiful DIY Homeschool Unit Study Planner

Unit Study Homeschool Planner

Moreover, the planner has pages which help you track your unit studies. Planning unit studies is quite different than planning using traditional curriculum.

For example, you may choose topics ahead of time. You need a form to jot down your ideas or topics your children choose.

However, waiting some time to plan the day to day or week to week planning can be smart. Interests may change and your goals for what you want your children to cover may change.

Unlike traditional curriculum, planning for unit studies take place ahead of the school year and should take place during the school year.

Finally, look at the detailed pages included as you put together your planner:

  • 4 unit study planner covers
  • Checklists and Unit Tracker
  • Planning unit studies packet
  • Lesson Planning pages with subjects filled in
  • Lesson Planning pages with editable spaces for your subjects
  • Learning Objectives forms
  • Assessment Form
  • Variety of Journal Pages
  • 83 pages.

Grab this gorgeous planner to help you plan!
