I have 19 hands-on rainforest activities for kindergarten. Too, grab more kindergarten activities on my kindergarten homeschool curriculum page.

And learning about the rainforest is a fun subject to cover for any grade including kindergarten.

Too, teaching children at the kindergarten age should include hands-on activities and should be play-based.

19 Fun Hands-on Rainforest Activities for Kindergarten

Kindergarten learners can discover the rainforest through their senses. And the word “rain forest” denotes the fact that these are the some of the world’s wettest ecosystems.

While exploring nature, they learn through the sense of smell, hearing, taste, and touch.

So, you’ll want to include learning through the senses and a full immersion into the world of nature.

If you have room in your learning space, create a play-based Amazon theme area. Make the jungle come alive through music and props.

Amazon Rainforest Animals

First, begin with what kids this age love and that is animals.

There are many Amazon rainforest animals which your child can focus on.

A few animals which can ignite your child’s love for the wealth of the life that lives in the rainforest are:

  • Jaguars
  • Toucans
  • Iguanas
  • Giant Ant Eaters
  • Kinkajou also called honey bears
  • Harpy Eagles
  • Piranhas
  • Sloth and
  • Butterflies
  • Red and Green Macaw

Besides the animals are really what excites your kids when learning about the rainforest.

19 Fun Hands-on Rainforest Activities for Kindergarten

You’ll love the page I have here Rain Forest – Animals of the Amazon where your children can see more pictures.

Rainforest Activities

Next, I have many rainforest activities for kids of all ages, but your kindergarten aged children will love putting together this fun lapbook.

Actually, my lapbooks are for multiple ages and are mix and match. Not all kids, especially kindergarten are on at the same level. That is perfectly normal.

Kids this age can be reading beginning chapter books, and some are still learning letter sounds. All of this is well within the range of normal for this age.

The point is kids love learning and this is the time for projects.

For example, look at these free Amazon rainforest lapbooks.

Rainforest Crafts for Kindergarten: Make an Easy Paper Plate Monkey

September 9, 2022 | Leave a Comment
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

Rainforest crafts for kindergarten encourages creativity, fosters imagination, and strengthens fine motor skills. Crafts are part of kindergarten homeschool curriculum.

And learning about the rainforest with a unit study approach is one of the best ways to teach kindergarten aged children.

Rainforest crafts for kindergarteners introduces young children to one of the most important ecosystems in the world.

Rainforest Crafts for Kindergarten: Make an Easy Paper Plate Monkey

And a fun paper plate monkey craft encourages young children to understand the diversity of the rainforest.

Not only can you help your child understand the difference between plants and animals, but your child can use their sense of hearing.

Howler Monkey Facts

First, help your child know how the animals of the rainforest depend on the trees (canopy) and even the understory (layer of vegetation under the canopy) to survive.

The understory is where tree trunks, vines, and bushes grow. Animals who live here in this section can climb very well.

But the emergent layer or the layer above the canopy is bright and sunny and animals with good balance like howler monkeys live here.

Then, look at a few facts about the howler monkeys.

  • Howler monkeys are one of the loudest animals in the rainforest.
  • Their howls sound like a strong wind blowing through a tunnel. Have you child stand up and see how loud he or she can howl. Watch the video above and listen to the male howler monkey.
  • Monkeys live in the trees and eat only vegetation like fruit and flowers.

However, more than just the howler monkey makes its home in the Amazon Rainforest.

What Monkeys Live in the Amazon Rainforest

Squirrel monkeys also live there and are very intelligent animals.

Squirrel Monkey Facts

Look at a few fun facts about squirrel monkeys to share with your child.

  • They are not the same color all over which makes it harder for predators to see.
  • Long tails are used for balance.
  • Also, they have hands with thumbs and can grip branches and food.
  • Squirrel Monkeys live in large groups like 100 in a group and this way they can warn each other of predators.

However, besides the howler monkey and squirrel monkey there are many species which live in the rainforest.

Some other monkeys are

  • Pygmy marmoset
  • Gray woolly
  • Emperor tamarin
  • Peruvian spider
  • Dusky titi

Your child will love the book Fourteen Monkeys: A Rain Forest Rhyme.

In this book there is not only rhyming language to share with your child but it about the Manú National Park in Peru where an amazing fourteen different species of monkeys live together.

Add in some sweet lovable friends, and you can study the rainforest a couple of days or even extend it to a week.

Make a Rainforest Paper Plate Monkey

Next encourage your child to make this easy rainforest paper plate monkey.

We simply followed the instructions at the adorable paper plate monkey at Easy Peasy and Fun.

Look at this list of things we used.

  • two paper plates
  • beige paper
  • glue
  • scissors
  • pencil
  • black marker
Rainforest Crafts for Kindergarten: Make an Easy Paper Plate Monkey

This was such a fun and easy rainforest activity. We traced Mr. MunchKing’s hands on light brown paper.

Then we pained the paper plates.

And cut out the legs, arms and face on lighter paper we already had.

Following the instructions for the craft on Easy Peasy and Fun we outlined a face.

We cut out the ears and tails separately and glued on.

Mr. Munchking loved his craft.

How to Create the Best Homeschool Schedule for Kindergarten (free printable)

August 28, 2022 | Leave a Comment
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

Today, in how to create the best homeschool schedule for kindergarten, I’m sharing tried and true tips for kindergarten homeschool curriculum.

Besides, having a kindergarten homeschool schedule is a must have to help you balance a learning day.

No, don’t create a homeschool schedule for your child, but for you. You’ll want a visual picture of what to teach.

How to Create the Best Homeschool Schedule for Kindergarten (free printable)

In addition, most public schools plan for a nine month school year and include topics like Opening and Discussion in their day. Those things happen naturally with your child in a day.

There is no need to add segments like Opening and Discussion to your schedule.

I’ll explain their meaning in a minute, but the point is to keep your schedule simple and clean.

Do not add fluff to your schedule which can be used by public school to teach the masses.

Kindergarten Subjects

First, you want to start with the subjects that you want to teach in kindergarten.

How to Create the Best Homeschool Schedule for Kindergarten

And standards have changed through the years. However, children this age have not changed in how they develop.

Although the educational world touts more subjects to teach at the kindergarten level, they should not take place of what is developmentally appropriate for a child.

For example, look at subjects some of the state standards tout:

  • math
  • reading and language arts
  • social studies
  • science
  • physical education
  • health
  • art
  • music
  • computer literacy and I even found
  • environmental education

This list even compared to just 20 years ago has changed significantly to include more subjects.

Homeschool Kindergarten

Next, after being familiar with some of the subjects generally taught in kindergarten, you want to check your local state law.

Don’t complicate your schedule by adding more than is necessary to give you a guide.

For instance, Opening is used in public school as a way to start the day the same way each morning. Some schools say the pledge of allegiance, some sing a hymn and others open with a prayer. Some do all three or other things they choose.

Discussion allows children to share their thoughts with their peers.

In addition, many years ago like when our parents were in kindergarten, teachers stood in front of the class and talked with their students. That doesn’t happen as much today.

How to Create the Best Homeschool Schedule for Kindergarten (free printable)

However, while at home, Opening and Discussion happens in a natural way. There is no need to schedule time to talk with your kindergarten.

Again, don’t follow a public school schedule.

Another example of a subject that does not need to be on your homeschool schedule is environmental education.

Children learn about nature and their environment around them by playing outside and by explaining to you what they find on a nature walk.

By being outside together, you naturally teach your child about the world around them just like you’ve been doing to this day. That doesn’t have to be reduced to scheduled time.

Easy Homeschool Kindergarten Schedule

As you can see, the most basic or foundation subjects are the only ones you need to add to your day.

Sometimes I’ve seen working homeschool moms who need to schedule a timeslot for play and nature. This makes sense because their family schedule is full.

However, if that is not your schedule, keep the schedule easy.

Look below at the time needed to cover the basic subjects.

SUBJECTAMOUNT OF TIME
MATH25 MINUTES
READING 20 MINUTES
BUILDING THE 3RS
(READING, ‘RITING, OR ‘RIMETIC)
15 MINUTES
SCIENCE & HISTORY ALTERNATE30 MINUTES
ARTS, CRAFTS, GAMES, AND PLAYING OUTDOORSAS MUCH TIME AS YOU CAN FIT IN FOR THE DAY

As you can see, there is a TOTAL of 1:45 minute formal instruction time.

However, the WHOLE day is devoted to learning. Do not stress over the formal amount of time.

How to Create the Best Homeschool Schedule for Kindergarten (free printable)

And do not underestimate the power of a little every day.

Free Editable Homeschool Kindergarten Schedule Printable

Finally, I have a free editable schedule you can use for kindergarten.

However, I’ve created it where you can BOTH schedule and track if you want to.

Because play IS learning, tracking play learning time will show you how much your child really is learning.

If you don’t want to track, then fill out the form with the schedule that works for you for the year.

If you want to track weekly, you can simply fill it out by pen and add to your planner.

Too, you can add times the column and fill out the rest by pen as you track your child’s learning.

Also don’t forget, I have this Early Learner Planner which can go from Prek almost up to first grade.

However, it’s hard to know which curriculum is better when you’re just beginning.

There are many choices and you want to have some basic guidelines so you know what is the difference between them.

10 Affordable and Complete Homeschool Kindergarten Curriculum

In addition, curriculum providers follow different homeschool approaches. Charlotte Mason, workbook, unit study and classical are a few homeschool approaches.

It’s important for you to know a few subtle differences because each family has different circumstances.

For example, some families may only have one child while others may have several children under five years of age.

So your time may be divided when you’re managing more during the day.

In addition, some families prefer to not have all days planned while others prefer plans.

While affordable and complete kindergarten homeschool curriculum varies with opinion, learning at this age shouldn’t.

Learning hands-on, through movement, and playing are three of the things I look for in a curriculum at this level.

Kindergarten Curriculum Supplements

Too, not all curriculum providers supply all the crafts and supplies you’ll need or want.

And if you’re teaching several children under 5 or 6 years of age, you want extra supplies and crafts.

For example, games for kindergarten should be at least half of your day along with reading aloud.

A few board games to get you started for kindergarten are

  • Monopoly Junior Board Game, Ages 5 and up
  • Mouse Trap Board Game for Kids Ages 6
  • ThinkFun Zingo Sight Words Award Winning Early Reading Game for Pre-K to 2nd Grade
  • eeBoo Fairytale Mix Ups Create A Story Pre-Literacy Cards
  • Sum Swamp Game

Also, fill your home with other kinds of writing materials besides pencils.

Children this age need practice with fine motor skills but that doesn’t happen by holding a regular pencil.

We used crayon rocks quite a bit because they’re fun to do arts and crafts with while strengthening fine motor skills.

Beginner Reading Choices

Also, here are some great books to get your child reading.

Beginner Reading Books For Kindergarten

A homeschooled kindergarten child’s reading diet should still be a mix of repeated texts or phonics readers and beginner readers.

This way your child’s basic reading skills continue to be strengthened while your child’s reading level is advancing.

Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum

Next, look at these affordable homeschool curriculum for your kindergartner.

You determine what else you may want to add.

1. Blossom and Root.

One reason Blossom and Root is affordable is because there is a list of books you buy or check out from the library.

So unlike other complete curriculum, you don’t get hard copy books. In addition, the math is light.

For some kids this works great, but for other kids they may need a stand math program.

But I love this curriculum because it’s play based, and nature based.

2. Rod and Staff.

Rod and Staff is a no fluff, straightforward and wonderful program.

It has been around for years and parents who want to add more crafts and play based ideas love this curriculum.

3. Five in a Row

Five in a Row is yet another we’ve used in the early years because I love using beautiful literature from the beginning.

Although your child learns math, you will want to add a solid math program.

4. The Good and the Beautiful.

We used The Good and The Beautiful for part of kindergarten and love their approach and price.

It had just the right balance of hands-on activities with teacher help.

5. Oak Meadow.

Oak Meadow is another provider that is based on individual opinion regarding price.

Although not the cheapest, they are play based and have options for your purchase. This too is all inclusive.

6. Christian Liberty Press.

In addition, Christian Liberty Press is another no fluff straightforward curriculum.

A lot of providers similar to Christian Liberty Press have options for enrolling on line or buying the kit.

Unless you live in a state with restrictive homeschool laws, you should be able to purchase the kit and go your own pace.

7. MasterBooks.

Next, Masterbooks is another favorite. While it’s not only affordable but has options for what you want to purchase.

With their Charlotte Mason approach and gentle fun activities for kindergarten, it’s a great choice

8. Horizons.

Additionally, Horizons is another one we have used and loved.

I wanted everything laid out and had a framework where we could add our own activities.

9. Easy Peasy All In One.

Easy Peasy All In One is a free online curriculum.

If you want to take a slow start to kindergarten while learning the ropes, then having this laid out curriculum will give you a solid boost.

10. Lifepac.

We have used lifepac too for concise worktexts when we needed them.

Not only are they complete, but laid out.
