Easy Jungle Crafts | Free Henri Rousseau Inspired Craft Kids Love

I have some easy jungle crafts and a simple Henri Rousseau inspired cut and paste craft to keep things fun. Also, look at my page Rain Forest – Amazon, Rain Forest – Animals of the Amazon and Rainforest Activities for Kids or more ideas, crafts and activities.

And look at my page Free Art Unit & Curriculum Grades 1 – 8  for more ideas.

Too, not understanding the slight differences between a jungle and rain forest can cause confusion. And some people use the words interchangeably based on where they live or places they have visited.

Also, jungle is not a scientific term but more of a description of an area. A rain forest is a specific ecosystem.

Easy Jungle Crafts | Free Henri Rousseau Inspired Craft Kids Love

Besides, all jungles are rainforests, but not all rainforests are jungles.

Additionally, a rainforest is a broad term for any tropical forest with heavy rain. A jungle usually means the really thick, wild, parts of a rainforest.

For example, the Amazon Rainforest in South America is the largest tropical rainforest in the world. It is home to jaguars, anacondas, toucans, and pink river dolphins.

Then the Congo Basin in Central Africa is the second largest rainforest and it is known for gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants, and rare birds.

Like a rainforest, jungles are home to many plants and species of animals. The abundance of plants and animals makes for great craft ideas.

Too, when studying about the jungle, add some art inspired jungle crafts.

A Weekend With Renoir

I have put on my little round hat (which I wear often, in fact), combed my white beard and put on my best navy-blue suit. I am wearing my favorite necktie, too. Surely, you can see at once that I am a painter. I am so pleased that you have come to spend the weekend with me, to hear me talk about myself and my friends-- they are painters also. What I am about to tell you is my own true story-- the story of my life and my work. You will have to step back with me into the past-- before you were born, yes, but not so very long ago.Let me introduce myself to you. My name is Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Linnea in Monet's Garden

Linnea has been in Paris. And she has visited the painter Claude Monet's garden! She even stood on the same little Japanese bridge that Monet painted so often in his pictures. In Paris, Linnea got to see many of the real paintings.

Now she can understand what it means to be called an Impressionist, and she knows a lot about Monet's life in the pink house where he lived with his eight children.

Twenty-five years after its original publication, this celebration of the wonder of art is available once again in an enlarged keepsake edition. The joy and inspiration Linnea discovers in Monet's garden will be eagerly embraced by a new generation

The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky's Abstract Art

Vasya Kandinsky was a proper little boy: he studied math and history, he practiced the piano, he sat up straight and was perfectly polite. And when his family sent him to art classes, they expected him to paint pretty houses and flowers—like a proper artist.   But as Vasya opened his paint box and began mixing the reds, the yellows, the blues, he heard a strange sound—the swirling colors trilled like an orchestra tuning up for a symphony! And as he grew older, he continued to hear brilliant colors singing and see vibrant sounds dancing. But was Vasya brave enough to put aside his proper still lifes and portraits and paint . . . music?   In this exuberant celebration of creativity, Barb Rosenstock and Mary GrandPré tell the fascinating story of Vasily Kandinsky, one of the very first painters of abstract art. Throughout his life, Kandinsky experienced colors as sounds, and sounds as colors—and bold, groundbreaking works burst forth from his noisy paint box.

Come Look With Me: Animals in Art

Few subjects have more immediate appeal to children than animals, and few methods of teaching students to appreciate fine art have proven more successful than those of educator Gladys S. Blizzard. In COME LOOK WITH ME: ANIMALS IN ART, she makes the most of children's natural curiosity about animals to introduce them not only to twelve magnificent works of art, but also to a whole new way of encountering art. Using an approach which is as fun as it is effective, the author deftly guides her young audience toward their own understanding of and delight in the world of art. The works featured in ANIMALS IN ART represent a variety of styles which students will encounter again in museums and in books: the muscular realism of Rosa Bonheur's "The Horse Fair", the delicate romanticism of Martin Johnson Heade's "Cattleya Orchid" and "Three
Brazilian Hummingbirds," the bold abstraction of Henri Matisse's "The Snail." They also represent an intriguing menagerie of beasts, from the mysterious deer and horses stampeding across the wall of Lascaux cave to Paul Klee's whimsical heart-nosed cat dreaming of a bird.

Fine Motor Writing Activities | How to Make a Hot Air Balloon Craft

Teaching preschoolers and kindergarteners fine motor writing activities should be fun. Also, look at my page How to Homeschool Preschool for more learning and playing ideas.

Besides preschool is a magical time full of exploration, creativity, and foundational learning.

And preschool means pre- or before formal learning. It is NOT the time to hold the pencil, but to teach a child to get ready to hold it and to get ready to write.

Fine Motor Writing Activities | How to Make a Hot Air Balloon Craft

Activities should be age appropriate and fun. Gradually, a child’s muscles should be strengthened.

Additionally, I have a fun hot air balloon craft using buttons. Sticking and glueing down buttons may seem like just fun but again it’s an activity to coordinate a preschooler’s fine motor grasp.

Too, there are many ways to help a child to strengthen them. For example, q tips, painting, “writing” in salt trays, and dabbing paint are a few ways to do this.

HOW TO MAKE A HOT AIR BUTTON BALLOON CRAFT

First, look at this fun hot air balloon craft.

Look at how to teach geography.

WHY TEACH GEOGRAPHY TO PRESCHOOLERS

Preschoolers are developing their understanding of their surroundings: their home, their community, their country, and their world so this is a great time for a gentle introduction to US geography.

How To Teach The 50 States To Preschoolers | 50 States Busy Book

Geography lessons help connect their small, familiar surroundings to a much bigger picture. It lets children appreciate the rich diversity of people, landscapes, food, traditions, and wildlife across the country.

HOW TO TEACH THE 50 STATES TO PRESCHOOLERS IN 10 WAYS

1. MAKE IT HANDS-ON

To make this experience rich and memorable, kick off each new state by creating a “state box”, a small container filled with items that represent a particular state.

Each time you introduce a new state, you can pull it off your shelf and let the child explore its content. Details below!

2. ADD PICTURE BOOKS

Keep a colorful engaging book like The 50 States Book on hand for your child to explore during free time as well as structured learning time.

How To Teach The 50 States To Preschoolers | 50 States Busy Book

3. PAIR STATES BY REGION

Start with your own state, then move to neighboring states or a geographic area (like the Southeast or Pacific Northwest).

4. FOCUS ON A FEW STATES AT A TIME

Consider focusing on 2–4 states each month. That lets you dig deep into each without being overwhelmed.

5. CREATE A “PASSPORT BOOK”

Design a small “passport” for each child and stamp it with a sticker or a small state-shaped stamp every time you learn about a new state. It’s a wonderful, interactive way to track progress.

6. USE FLASHCARDS

Use flashcards to familiarize your child with the shape of each state and for learning simple facts, these can be reused throughout several years.

How To Teach The 50 States To Preschoolers | 50 States Busy Book

7. MAKE AN ONGOING ART PROJECT

Next, make a large USA poster where children can color each state as you learn it.

8. USE A MAP PUZZLE

Besides just using it to put together a puzzle you can use individual state pieces in your state box, in sensory bins for each state, for tracing, stamping in playdough.

9. USE COLORING PAGES

Then as each new state is introduced, put out a coloring page for it on the desk/table, or incorporate it into morning time as you read about the state.

10. MAKE A CRAFT FOR EACH STATE

Incorporate a craft that highlights each state as you learn about it like this Statue of Liberty torch craft for New York.

Too, incorporate this 50 States Busy Book, with a page for each of our great states with cut outs highlighting state birds, name, flower, and more.

How To Teach The 50 States To Preschoolers | 50 States Busy Book

Next, look at a quick glance of Florida facts.

FLORIDA STATE FACTS FOR YOUR BOX

  • Capital-Tallahassee
  • Nickname-The Sunshine State
  • State Flower-Orange Blossom
  • State Mammal: Florida Panther
  • State Reptile: Alligator
  • State Bird: Mockingbird

And Florida is a peninsula, which is a piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water.

Florida has beaches, forests, lakes, rivers, and the Florida Everglades, a wetland full of diverse wildlife.

Finally, look at how to make this fun state geography box when you’re learning how to teach the 50 states.

MAKE A STATE GEOGRAPHY BOX: FLORIDA

Using a state box filled with postcards, food, souvenirs, and photos transforms a geographic concept into a rich, hands-on experience for young children. The main activity — putting together a Florida box — is a perfect starting point for a multistate journey.

If you have family or mom friends in other states, reach out and ask them to help you gather items to fill a box for their state.

You will need:

  • A sturdy cardboard or plastic box with a lid
  • Postcards-Picture postcards from Florida featuring landmarks like Disney World, Kennedy Space Center, or South Beach.
  • Stickers
  • Photos-Printed photos of orange groves, alligator habitats in the Everglades, manatees, and Palm trees.
  • Small souvenirs-Seashells collected from Florida’s Gulf or Atlantic shores; tiny orange figurine; miniature alligator; keychain from a Florida attraction.
  • Food samples- An orange, key lime cookies, or small jars of orange juice to taste.
  • Activity cards-Printed facts about Florida flashcards, etc

First, try to gather at least 5–10 different items.

Design a “State Box” label, create a large label or cover for your box featuring the Florida state flag or a map of Florida. Slip it into a page protector and tape to the top of your box so it can be easily switched out for other states.

How To Teach The 50 States To Preschoolers | 50 States Busy Book

Begin adding items as you collect them. You can print out state flags and other images to fill it in.

How To Teach The 50 States To Preschoolers | 50 States Busy Book

Hand over the box and first let your child shake it, listen to its rattle, and predict what might be inside.

HANDS ON FLORIDA STATE GEOGRAPHY BOX

Open the box together, slowly unveil each item, and talk about it “This is a key lime. Did you know key limes come from Florida?” or “This is a picture of a manatee. Manatees live in Florida’s warm waters”.

Pair your state box with a short story or picture book about Florida. Look for children’s books featuring Florida wildlife, landmarks, or food. I have several listed above you can purchase or check out from your library.

How To Teach The 50 States To Preschoolers | 50 States Busy Book

Repeat the same “open the box” routine each time you introduce a state. That predictability lets children become comfortable and engaged in their own exploration.

Then another easy way how to teach the 50 states is use my 50 states busy book.

EASTERN BOX TURTLE VS. DESERT BOX TURTLE

Box turtles are named this because they cannot only retreat into their shells at the first sign of danger, but also seal off their legs and head within a hinged plastron(under shell) creating formidable armor.

There are five subspecies of the common box turtle, each differing slightly in the coloring and patterning of the carapace, and having either three or four toes on each hind foot.

The Eastern Box Turtle and the Desert Box Turtle share many things in common…

  • They are both reptiles- This means they have scaly skin, are cold-blooded, and lay eggs.
  • They have hard shells- Their upper and lower shells connect, forming a protective “box” that lets them pull in their head, legs, and tail when danger is nearby.
  • They move slowly- Box turtles aren’t fast runners — their heavy shells weigh them down — but that’s okay because their protective “box” keeps them safe.
  • Both are omnivores –which means they eat a mixture of plants (like strawberries and grasses) and small creatures (like insects and worms).
  • They can live a long time- Box turtles, whether they live in forests or deserts, can live 30-50 years or more in the wild — sometimes even up to 100 years with proper care.
  • They are land dwellers- Some turtles love water, but box turtles and their desert relatives mainly stay on land.
  • They hibernate in cold months- when it gets cold, both will find a sheltered spot and slow their body down to save energy until it warms up again.

Now let’s look at a few differences in each of these reptiles.

EASTERN BOX TURTLE

Habitat-forests, fields, meadows, near water
Environment-humid, damp, lots of leaf litter
Shell Coloring-darker brown or black with yellow or orange patterns
Activity- more active during the day
Diet-insects, worms, strawberries, mushrooms, and plants insects, cactus fruit, grasses, small invertebrates
Protection- hard, protective “box” lets it close up safely

DESERT BOX TURTLE

Habitat- deserts, scrublands, grasslands, drier areas
Environment- arid, sandier, less water
Shell Coloring- lighter yellowish-brown with delicate lines
Activity- more active in the early morning or late evening to avoid the daytime heat
Protection- hard “box” plus coloring that helps it blend in with sand and scrub

BOX TURTLE CRAFT

First decide which type of box turtle you would like to make, this will help you choose colors for its particular markings.

You will need:

  • 2 paper bowls
  • Green paint or markers
  • Brown, yellow, or black paint or markers
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Googly eyes (optional)

Turn the bowl upside-down and paint it green.

For a more realistic look, add brown or yellow patterns with a brush or marker.

Allow the bowl to dry thoroughly.

Using construction paper, cut:

  • 1 small oval or circle for the head
  • 4 short rectangles or ovals for the legs
  • 1 small triangle for the tail

We used some scrap craft paper we had on hand.

Using tape stick the head to the rim of the bowl at the front, put it on so that you can fold the head and legs inward to “hide”

Attach the 4 legs — 2 on each side — and the small triangle at the back for the tail.

If you have googly eyes, you can glue them on the head, or you can draw the eyes with a black marker.

Use another color of paint with a brush or a paint pen to add design to the top of the turtle shell.

Turn the bowl (shell) upside-down and put it on the other bowl to create a base for your turtle.

If you tape it on just one side like a hinge you can use this to demonstrate how the box turtle can completely close up in its shell.

You can use curriculum alongside your current curriculum or you can use it stand alone.

It uses what is called a Socratic method of discussion. This means curriculum is built around dialogue, questions and discussion and not worksheets.

The worksheets I have today are to guide discussions.

The Basics of Critical Thinking Workbook - Lessons and Activities (Grades 4-9)

This engaging, colorful 152-page book for grades 4-9 (ages 9-15) teaches the most important critical thinking concepts every student should know. Many workbooks claim to teach or develop critical thinking skills, but most of these products never define critical thinking or try to teach the meaning to students. This book defines and teaches critical thinking in a way all students can understand through simple explanations, diagrams, and short, engaging activities. In addition to being a course in critical thinking, the activities in this book can be used to supplement lessons in all subjects.Although this book teaches common argument forms, its primary focus is identifying and evaluating evidence–the very basis of critical thinking. Most propaganda, advertising schemes, legal trickery, and bad science are not the result of complex arguments; they are the result of half-truths and simple arguments. Students who successfully complete this book will have a fundamental set of critical thinking skills they can use their entire lives.
