Before we tackle building our LEGO Atlas, let’s find out more about who he was, other key players in Greek Mythology, and find some more great mythology ideas to expand on our activity.

WHO WAS ATLAS

Atlas was a Titan, part of the generation of gods that ruled before the Olympians.

He was the son of Lapetus, another Titan, and a sea nymph named Clymene. Atlas played a major role in the Titanomachy, the great war between the Titans and the Olympian gods led by Zeus.

When the Olympians won, Zeus punished Atlas uniquely and eternally. Instead of being cast into Tartarus like many other Titans, Atlas was sentenced to hold up the sky (not the Earth, as commonly misunderstood) at the edge of the world.

His punishment symbolized the weight of rebellion and the consequences of defying divine authority.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

Atlas appears in several myths, including one involving Heracles (Hercules).

During one of his twelve labors, Heracles temporarily took on Atlas’s burden so Atlas could retrieve the golden apples of the Hesperides.

However, Heracles cleverly tricked Atlas into taking the sky back, restoring the Titan to his endless task.

OTHER IMPORTANT GREEK GODS AND TITANS TO EXPLORE

Once Atlas is complete, students can expand their LEGO mythology set by adding gods and figures connected to his story.

  • Zeus- The king of the Olympian gods, Zeus ruled the sky and thunder. He defeated the Titans and decided Atlas’s fate. Zeus symbolizes authority, justice, and power.
  • Hera- Zeus’s wife and queen of the gods, Hera was the goddess of marriage and family. She is known for her jealousy and strong will.
  • Poseidon- Brother of Zeus and god of the sea, Poseidon ruled oceans, earthquakes, and storms. His trident is one of the most recognizable symbols in mythology.
  • Athena- Goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, Athena often helped heroes with clever plans rather than brute strength.
  • Heracles (Hercules)- A famous hero rather than a god, Heracles interacted directly with Atlas during his twelve labors.
  • Prometheus- Atlas’s brother, Prometheus defied Zeus by giving fire to humanity. His punishment mirrors Atlas’s in its severity and symbolism.

Atlas represents more than physical strength. His story opens the door to meaningful discussion. Here are some questions to ask to help your child dig deeper into the story.

How does Atlas differ from the Olympian gods?
What responsibilities feel heavy in real life?
How do pride and rebellion affect choices?
Why do myths often use punishment to teach lessons?

HOW TO CRAFT THE POWERFUL TITAN ATLAS

You will need:

  • LEGO baseplate
  • Assorted LEGO Bricks

For this tutorial, I used tan, white, brown, blue, and yellow LEGO Bricks.

Here is a list if you want to gather them up before you begin. You do not have to follow the number exactly, for example, if it calls for 2×8 bricks, you can use a couple of 2×4 bricks to make up the same amount. If you look closely, you can see where I swapped out a few of my own.

  • 24 tan 2×2 bricks
  • 4 tan 2×6 bricks
  • 11 tan 2×4 bricks
  • 7 brown 2×2 bricks
  • 4 brown 1×2 bricks
  • 7 white 2×2 bricks
  • 3 white 1×2 bricks
  • 8 blue 2×4 bricks
  • 4 blue 2×2 bricks
  • 2 blue 1×2 bricks
  • 1 yellow 2×2 brick

Also, if you don’t have enough of the tan bricks, you can make it in white as if it’s a marble statue, or use whatever combination of colors you like.

Start with the feet, for this I used two  2×4 tan bricks.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

Stack five 2×2 tan bricks on top of each to make the legs.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

I wanted to show you that if you are short on bricks you can sneak in another color on the back side to help fill in- hee hee.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

Build the abdomen by stacking the four tan 2×6 bricks on top of each other.

HOW TO CRAFT THE POWERFUL TITAN ATLAS

Then, add two rows of white to create the covering using a combination of six 2×2 white bricks.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

Add a 2×4 brick to the center to help build up the neck and two 2×4 tan bricks on either side of it to create shoulders and start the arms.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

Build the upright arms the same way you did the legs by stacking 6 tan 2×2’s on top of each other.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

Add hands using tan 2×4 bricks facing outward.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

Create his head by stacking two 2×8 bricks and then centering a tan 2×2 on top and underneath. Surround with your 7 brown 2×2’s and 4 brown 1×2’s to look at hair and a beard.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

Carefully attach the legs, abdomen, and head together.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

Create an arched “sky” using blue bricks for the sky, white for clouds, and a yellow to represent the sun in the sky. Or you can use black and create a night sky- get creative with this part.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

To be sure it will fit properly on his hands, you can lay your Atlas down as you build the arch to be sure it will balance properly.

Craft Lego Mythology Sets - How To Craft The Powerful Titan Atlas

For him to hold the weight upright, you will need to anchor him on a baseplate.

LEGO 40530 Tribute to Jane Goodall

  • Dr Jane Goodall + Chimps

Before we explore the Earth’s layers, I want to share more about the people behind the research, observations, and innovations of Earth Science.

  • Seismologists, a type of geophysicist, study earthquakes and use seismic waves to understand the crust, mantle, and core.
  • Geologists study rocks, minerals, and Earth’s structure overall.
  • Geophysicists focus on how the Earth works internally, including seismic waves, magnetism, and heat flow.

LAYERS OF THE EARTH

Next, look at facts about the layers of earth.

INNER CORE- THE SOLID METAL HEART

  • About 1,500 miles wide
  • Made of solid iron and nickel
  • Temperatures reach over 9,000°F
  • Stays solid because of extreme pressure
  • Helps power the magnetic field with the outer core

OUTER CORE- LIQUID METAL THAT CREATES MAGNETISM

  • Made of liquid iron and nickel
  • Constantly swirling
  • This movement generates Earth’s magnetic field
  • The magnetic field protects us from solar radiation and helps birds migrate

MANTLE- SLOW-MOVING ROCK

  • The thickest layer (1,800+ miles thick!)
  • Made of hot, semi-solid rock
  • Moves slowly in convection currents
  • Movement causes plate tectonics, volcanoes, and earthquakes

CRUST- THE LAYER WE LIVE ON

  • Oceanic crust is thinner; continental crust is thicker
  • Thinnest layer (only 3–45 miles thick)
  • Broken into moving tectonic plates
  • Includes oceans, continents, mountains, soil, and rock
Crust to Core: How to Build LEGO Earth Layers

One fascinating part of studying Earth’s layers is that no one has ever traveled to the mantle or the core- yet scientists still know they exist.

How? They use seismic waves, the vibrations that move through the Earth during earthquakes. These waves change speed and direction depending on whether they pass through solid rock, liquid metal, or cooler crust.

By studying these patterns, scientists create detailed models of Earth’s internal structure. This process, called seismic tomography, works almost like taking an X-ray of the planet.

Your LEGO model represents what these measurements reveal deep below the surface.

LEGO EARTH LAYERS AND BEYOND

While I love the fun aspect of LEGO, it is great to incorporate a variety of different hands-on ideas to include different aspects of the topic. Here are some engaging ideas to explore.

  • Nature Anatomy- We used this for our reference image; it had a great, simple illustration for this purpose.

HOW TO CREATE LEGO EARTH LAYERS

For this simple build, I used a combination of brick lengths, all 2 studs wide. This keeps the number of needed bricks to a minimum, ensuring you have enough while still enabling you to demonstrate the layers from the inside out.

You will need:

LEGO bricks in 4-6 distinct colors

Crust to Core: How to Build LEGO Earth Layers

Choose a small group of bricks (2×2, 2×3, 2×4, or 2×6). Create a tight, compact shape. Keep it small; it should be the smallest part of the build.

Crust to Core: How to Build LEGO Earth Layers

Use orange bricks to form a ring around the inner core. Make this layer slightly larger, about 1–2 bricks thick.

Crust to Core: How to Build LEGO Earth Layers

Add yellow or red bricks to create a much thicker ring. Use two or more layers of height for a more dramatic 3D look. This ring should be the largest and thickest part of the model.

Crust to Core: How to Build LEGO Earth Layers

Go around with a layer of brown bricks next.

Crust to Core: How to Build LEGO Earth Layers

Use green bricks for land areas. Use blue bricks to represent oceanic crust.

Crust to Core: How to Build LEGO Earth Layers

Make a thin outer ring that only uses one layer of bricks.

While you have your LEGO bricks out, expand on this simple LEGO model of Earth’s layers with another hands-on project to demonstrate plate tectonics.

Plate Tectonics Demonstration- Createmini plates from LEGO flat tiles.

Slide them:

  • Alongside each other (earthquakes)
  • Toward each other (mountain formation)
  • Apart (mid-ocean ridges)

EASY LEGO IDEAS

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

Now, look at these LEGO science activities.

5 LEGO SCIENCE ACTIVITIES TO EXPLORE

1. BUILD A BUBBLING LEGO VOLCANO

Turn classic science fun into a brick-building challenge.  Have your child build a volcano shape using brown, red, green, and/or gray LEGO bricks.

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

Leave space in the center for a small cup or container. Fill the cup with baking soda, a few drops of food coloring, and dish soap.

Then slowly pour in vinegar and watch the lava bubble over the sides.

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

This experiment demonstrates a chemical reaction. The vinegar (acid) reacts with the baking soda (base) to create carbon dioxide gas, which causes the bubbling “lava” eruption.

Try different liquids (such as lemon juice, soda, etc.) and compare the strength of the eruptions.

2. LEGO BRIDGE STRENGTH CHALLENGE

Put your young engineers to the test. Have them design and build a bridge out of LEGO bricks that can span a small gap, like between two stacks of books.

Then test its strength by slowly adding weight (like coins, toy cars, or small books) until the bridge breaks or bends.

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

This challenge teaches engineering principles, including balance, load distribution, and structural strength.

Introduce concepts like trusses and arches, and see which shapes make the strongest bridge.

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

3. LEGO BALLOON-POWERED CAR

Kids can explore motion and air power by building a simple car from LEGO bricks. .

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

Attach wheels to a base, lay a balloon with the opening towards the front.

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

Build a frame to hold it in place, leaving enough room for it to expand. To extend the distance you can tape a straw to your balloon with tape. B blow it up, and let it go.

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

The escaping air propels the car forward, just like a mini rocket.

This activity explores Newton’s Third Law of Motion: for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction.

The air pushing out of the balloon pushes the car forward.

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

Experiment with different car designs or balloon sizes to see which goes the farthest.

4. LEGO SINK OR FLOAT INVESTIGATION

Fill a bin or large bowl with water and gather a mix of LEGO bricks in different shapes and sizes.

Ask your child to predict which pieces will sink or float, then test their guesses.

For older kids, challenge them to build LEGO “boats” that can carry small objects (like coins, marbles, or a minifigure) without sinking.

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

This fun experiment teaches buoyancy and density. The more air trapped inside the LEGO structure, the better it floats.

Have kids record their results in a simple chart or graph for an added math connection.

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

5. LEGO MARBLE MAZE AND GRAVITY RACE

Use LEGO bricks to create a marble maze or a ramp race.

5 Exciting LEGO Science Activities for Kids Who Love Hands-On Learning

Start with a baseplate and build walls to guide a marble through twists and turns. Or make a slanted track and see which marble rolls down fastest.

Read through these eye facts with your child before or during the build to get the most out of this hands-on project.

LOOKING AT EYE ANATOMY

 IRIS

  • The iris is the colored part of your eye, made of tiny muscles that control the size of your pupil.
  • It helps your eyes adjust to bright or dim light, much like a camera lens adjusting its aperture, opening and closing.
  • No two irises are exactly alike; your iris pattern is unique to you, like a fingerprint.

PUPIL

  • The pupil is the black hole in the center of your eye.
  • It changes size depending on the light, becoming smaller in bright sunlight and larger in darkness.
  • Some animals, such as cats and goats, have differently shaped pupils that help them see better in their environments.

SCLERA

  • In some animals, the sclera isn’t white, like in sharks, where it’s dark to help camouflage their eyes.
  • The sclera is the white part of your eye that protects the inner parts and gives your eyeball its shape.
  • It’s made of tough tissue, similar to what’s in tendons and ligaments!

EYELASH

  • Eyelashes are tiny hairs that help keep dust, dirt, and small particles out of your eyes.
  • When something gets too close, your eyelashes help trigger the blink reflex to protect your eyes.
  • They grow in a natural curve that helps direct sweat and moisture away from your eyes.

EYELID

  • The eyelid acts like a shield for your eyes—it keeps them moist and clean.
  • Every time you blink, your eyelid spreads a thin layer of tears across your eye’s surface.
  • Humans blink approximately 15–20 times per minute, which helps keep vision clear.

EYEBROW

  • Eyebrows help protect your eyes from sweat and rain, guiding moisture away from the eye area.
  • They also help us express emotions; you can tell a lot from raised or furrowed eyebrows.
  • In art and history, eyebrows have always played a big role in human expression and beauty.

TEAR DUCT

  • Your body makes three types of tears: basal (everyday moisture), reflex (from irritants like onions), and emotional (from feelings).
  • The tear duct is the tiny pink corner on the inside of your eye where tears drain.
  • Tears aren’t just for crying; they lubricate and clean the eye all the time.

EYE ANATOMY RESOURCES

The Way We Work is a fantastic resource to keep on hand for all things anatomy.

A couple of these large LEGO sets give you lots of options for building anatomy models like our eye. You can use them for LEGO building challenges, as math manipulatives, and so much more.

Older kids may enjoy learning even more about the eye, like the inside anatomy as we did in this 8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model project.

Watch The Human Eye for Kids from Homeschool Pop and learn more about the inner and outer workings of the eye.

Just for fun I think it would really be a hit to use gummy eye candy to introduce or end this unit!

Yarn crafts are easy to do and affordable. Not only do they nurture creativity, but they give you a chance to teach a themed lesson without a lesson plan.

And yarn comes in many colors, textures, and thicknesses, inviting kids to experiment and create.

So today, I’m showing you how to make this adorable yarn wrapped craft. Isn’t he adorable? Too, I have a free cat template which you can download at the bottom.

Fun Yarn Crafts And How To Make A Yarn Wrapped Cat

Adding craft and an animal a child loves is a great spin to science and animal husbandry.

In addition, look at these other ideas for a one day or full week unit study about cats. Art is color theory and texture, math is counting yarn or how many times it’s wrapped and discuss symmetry.

Language arts can be as simple as writing about your child’s favorite cat or pet cat. And science can be extended to include older children and discuss domesticated and wild cat habitats.

However, there are many other advantages to meaningful play which is what this craft encourages. For instance, for your younger children, wrapping the yard around the cardboard strengthens fine motor.

Millions of Cats

The book won a Newbery Honor award in 1929, one of the few picture books to do so. It is perhaps the oldest American picture book still in print. The hand-lettered text, done by the author's brother, tells the story of an elderly couple who live comfortably, but realize that they are very lonely. The wife wants a cat to love, so her husband sets off in search of a beautiful one to bring home to her. After traveling far away from home, he finds a hillside covered in "cats here, cats there, Cats and kittens everywhere."
