The Perfect Personal Planner: 5 Questions to Ask (before you buy)

The Perfect Personal Planner 5 Questions to Ask before you buy @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Life is full of seasons of change and for the first time this year I will be using two different planners. One planner will be the one I always use each year, which is my 7 Step Homeschool Planner and the other one is a new personal planner.

My homeschool planner is considerably thinner now that I am down to homeschooling one son and my personal life after school (taking care of aging parents, guiding young adults on career and education and keeping up with my husband’s new career) is considerably fuller.

Choosing a personal planner can be just as overwhelming as choosing as a homeschool planner.

Because I had used a personal planner in my LBK (life before kids) when I was important busy working in a law office, I had some previous experience using one prior to switching to exclusively using a homeschool planner. Life comes full circle for sure.

Personal Planners that Fits a Homeschooling Lifestyle (or don’t)

I’m sure my personal planner will be a journey like my 7 Step Homeschool Planner has been, but there are few questions I had to answer before I chose one.

I thought you could benefit from my brainstorming questions.

One/ How big do you want it? Size matters.

One reason for choosing a personal planner is because I still want this baby to fit in my purse. This is the hardest part for me because by nature, I tend to like large size planners, which give me a lot of room to write.

But I’m sucking it up and going tighter and smaller to keep my personal planner fitting in my purse because I need to be able to not carrying too much in my hands as I take my mother in law back and forth to the doctor for her appointments. Besides my other hand is for more important things like coffee or iced tea.

Pointer: Remember if you use a smaller planner, you may need to only keep half the year in your planner for the daily pages. I’m keeping the glance at a view for the whole year, but scaled back my daily pages to only 6 months because I want journal pages to write notes in. I’ll see how I survive.

Two/ Do you want to reuse a binder or choose one already spiral bound?

I know that I will be using my binder a lot and so I wanted one with rings and chose a faux leather one to refill. If I stick with this method, I think I would be willing to cough up the bucks for a leather one that will last.

But that also leads me to my next question.

Three/ What type of refillable calendar pages do you want?

Knowing that I want as much room to write on my journal pages and daily pages, I chose a one-page-per-day layout.

Four/ What type of journal pages do you want?

I chose simple colored pages because I’m still waffling about how I want to make my lists and take notes, so I chose Filofax ruled and plain personal size pages to keep it simple.

Five/ What kind of extras (i.e. glam) do you want to add to your planner?

Then my favorite part is choosing all the pretty stuff to go in it. I do like some of it, but I’m not into turning my planner into a scrapbook. Who has time for that while homeschooling? Inspiration and enhancing yes, but dawdling and idling no.

Having inspiration in my planner is important to me as I use it everyday. Like my 7 Step Homeschool Planner, I have to add a few smokin’ hot things I love.

Here is what I’ve added so far.

Posh bookmarks.
Michaels carries a lot of the Recollections brand, which I like for my planner.

Planner Charm (everybody needs one or two)

Here is the planner charm I using right now which is the Creative Year Sky Blue Tassel & Feather Planner Charm.

creative-yearThen you never want to leave home without having an accessory pouch and well if it’s gold, it just makes things better! ha.

Must have accessory pouch for a personal planner @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Not only can you include in the pouch a few mentionables like paper clips, small tube of lip balm and a rubber band, but any small unmentionable you want to as well. (wink).

I got my gold accessory pouch from Michaels and used it this year and I think I can get another years use out of it.

And a few pretty page markers for your personal planner while you homeschool @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

And then I love having more than one way to spot sections in my planner, so I have been using these Creative Year Blush Magnetic Bookmarks too.

Will you be using two planners this next year too?

It has been a longggggg time since I have and I’m so giddy to jump into using it and I’m sure I will have some pros and cons next year after I start using it and I won’t forget to share them with you

Hugs and love ya,

Signature T

Free Rolling To-Do List (for your Homeschool or Blog Planner)

October 27, 2016 | 1 Comment
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

Free Rolling To-Do List (for your Homeschool or Blog Planner) @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool PlusBlogging goals are somewhat like homeschooling goals, but not exactly when it comes to meeting deadlines. As I homeschool, I only have the goals for my children that I want to meet.

As a homeschool blogger I collaborate with others. That means there are some deadlines, goals and tasks that need to be done, which are out of my control.

Also, some of the tasks that I need to do can wait for weeks and months and others need to be addressed quickly. Still other goals or projects require multiple steps that don’t necessarily go on the blog pages I use now for each month.

I know you don’t necessarily follow me because you blog, but I do know that certain times in your homeschool journey you have much to do as well and need a place to dump it.

Flexible Rolling To-Do List

So because I needed this form for my blog and I know you probably could use it too for your homeschool or blog, I am sharing this Rolling To-Do List with you freely instead of adding it to my Forever Blog Planner.

Forever Blog Planner 361 pages. The Ultimate Blog Planner @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus store

The reason I named it a rolling to-do list is because there is no date on it for each month. You just keep adding your to-dos and rolling them over onto the next page while you mark off what you have completed.

I will be placing my rolling to-do list pages at the front of my blog planner for now.

As I complete the tasks, I will check them off or put an arrow if I need to move that task forward to another page.

Like I mentioned, I can check off the list and keep using another page or rewrite a task if I want to onto another page.

It’s a place to dump all that is on your mind.

This rolling list just lets me keep on adding and scrolling through it and it is flexible. I don’t have to decide which month to put a task at the moment. I just simply note it to get it off my mind.

7 Step Homeschool Planner – Top 10 Favorites

January 5, 2015 | 19 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

When I started creating the 7 Step Homeschool Planner quite a few years ago and before I started sharing with you, I had no idea that other homeschoolers had the same needs that I did.

Before I share the 7 Step Homeschool Planner – Top 10 Favorites of my readers, I wanted to take a minute to explain how to use it so that you are getting the most benefit from it.

Homeschool Planner Favorites

What makes the 7 Step Homeschool Planner so UNIQUE?

The top feature of the planner is that YOU pick exactly what you need each.
Your needs change each year and so should your planner.

No downloading one huge .pdf of forms that may not be what you need for this year and laid out in way that works for somebody else. You are in control. (I love that word.)

7 Step Homeschool Planner – Top 10 Favorites

The nightmare of paying and downloading a planner that is set up to suit the needs of somebody else never works exactly the same for you.

The other top feature is that I guide you STEP by STEP through the 7 Steps or sections needed in a planner. I got you covered so that way you don’t miss something significant for the year.

I take the guesswork out of it for you.

Too, though I suggest that you put them in the order that I explain, a huge advantage to you hand picking each form is that you get to arrange the order of the sections.

Everybody has a method to their madness and your planner should speak volumes about the way you prefer to organize.

Although I could go on about how I add forms each year, give you tidbits on organizing along the way and tell you there are free forms at every step, which is another perk, the last advantage is that each planner is unique because my pages are not matchy-match.

The mix and match style keeps your planner just plain awesome. Your planner will always be unique because of the pages you choose each year

You can read some more key features of my planner on the 7 Step Homeschool Planner main page.

Without making you wait any longer, here are my readers’ Top 10 Favorites of my 7 Step Free Homeschool Planner.

Going from dazzling to totally awesome order, I started with number 10 on the list.

What is Year Around Homeschooling? Part 1

The full meaning of year around schooling wasn’t clear to me. You would think the definition is self explanatory, but not so fast. Also, look on my page The Dynamics of How to Homeschool Easily and Smarter.

I couldn’t entertain the thought to school year around until I learned if it was a negative or a positive for me.

What is Year Around Homeschooling? Part 1

Does it mean giving up summer when we might think that is the time for summer fun?

Did it mean schooling ALL the time? That sounds EXHAUSTING! How were the kids going to react to this?

When was I going to clean and organize? Does it mean no rest for the weary?

I used to think so, but I don’t anymore.

What is Year Around Homeschooling

About 7 years ago, I started homeschooling year around.

At first, I made the mistake probably a lot of homeschoolers do and that is keep the same momentum in summer as I do during the regular school year.

I was faithfully keeping a 4 week “on” (meaning actually homeschooling) 1 week “off” (meaning doing little to nothing) schedule regardless of what was going on in my life.

Swimming lessons in the summer, what was that? How crazy is that to think I didn’t even have time for swim lessons for the kids?

Thinking about this later, I now see the advantage of keeping the routine of “4 on, 1 off” the same for that one year, my “beginning year”.

Until I got used to the year around schedule, the “stricter time period” helped me to see the “ebb and flow” of things going on in my life.

It was not wasted BUT a valuable learning experience so I could embrace year around schooling.

More importantly, I could pick and choose what works for my family and our circumstances.

Also, look at these books which will help you to understand what is homeschooling year round.

5 BEST How to Homeschool Books

I've rounded up some of the best books to help you get started homeschooling.

Homeschooling for New Homeschoolers: When You Don't Know Where to Begin

Homeschooling 31 Day Boot Camp for New Homeschoolers is a real eye-opener on homeschooling. It will alleviate a lot of the anxieties about getting started homeschooling. Reading each chapter’s highlights will give you encouragement, knowledge, guidance, and peace of mind to homeschool with confidence. The best part is that you’ll be educating the person who loves your kids the most in this world--YOU! Armed with the knowledge to make better choices in curriculum will empower you to continue the path of home education. Unlike many books based on one family’s experience, Homeschooling 31 Day Boot Camp for New Homeschoolers is also based on Tina’s many years of mentoring hundreds and hundreds of new homeschoolers at live workshops. When you don’t know where to begin Homeschooling 31 Day Boot Camp for New Homeschoolers equips you to successfully homeschool your children.

The Unhurried Homeschooler

Homeschooling is a wonderful, worthwhile pursuit, but many homeschool parents struggle with feelings of burnout and frustration. If you have ever felt this way, you’re not alone! Most of us need to be reminded of the “why” of homeschooling from time to time—but "The Unhurried homeschooler" takes parents a step further and lifts the unnecessary burdens that many parents place on themselves.

Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler's Guide to Unshakable Peace

Those who have made the decision to homeschool their children have done so out of great love for their children and a desire to provide them an excellent education in the context of a warm, enriching home.

The Brave Learner: Finding Everyday Magic in Homeschool, Learning, and Life

Parents who are deeply invested in their children's education can be hard on themselves and their kids. When exhausted parents are living the day-to-day grind, it can seem impossible to muster enough energy to make learning fun or interesting. How do parents nurture a love of learning amid childhood chaos, parental self-doubt, the flu, and state academic standards?

Unschooled: Raising Curious, Well-Educated Children Outside the Conventional Classroom

Education has become synonymous with schooling, but it doesn’t have to be. As schooling becomes increasingly standardized and test driven, occupying more of childhood than ever before, parents and educators are questioning the role of schooling in society. Many are now exploring and creating alternatives.

Here are some questions that I needed to answer before I could commit to year around schooling.

Maybe some of these same questions will help you to “hone in” on just what year around schooling is. I will “talk schedule” in the second part.

1. Vacation means, depending on which dictionary you use, “a period of time devoted to rest and pleasure”. Do I REALLY want or need to “vacation” for 3 months CONSECUTIVELY?

2. DO I want to spread my “rest” out during the year?

3. What summer activities here in Texas, besides the heat, were we missing out on?

If you live where the weather is milder, are the camping grounds more crowded during the summer or are the theme parks more crowded during summer?

Can I utilize part of the summer to be more relaxed but maintain some routine?

4. Did I WANT to take my “vacation” during the summer OR have choices during the fall or spring when we might want a longer break and when the weather is milder here in the south?

5. Does my husband (or spouse) work for the public school or university or other type of place where it benefits my family to keep to the Aug to May school schedule?

6. How about family reunions, special occasions and holidays with my extended family?

What is that “ebb and flow” during the year when I am expected to attend?

How much am I expected to partake in?

7. Do I allow my children to dictate our family rhythm? Caveat:

It is much easier to say “my way” when the kids are very young.

To take them out of public school when they are middle school or older and where the whole family is accustomed to a “summer vacation” is much harder to change.

The children have friends “vacationing” and see them having fun during summer.

The question then is “Do I want to get off the public school treadmill and now find MY family’s routine?Has this schedule been the best schedule for my family in the past?

Free Homeschool Editable Progress Report Card for Teen

I have an editable progress report card for a teen. Also look at my page Homeschool Planner and my 7 Step Curriculum Planner for more homeschool planning forms.

I had planned to share all my graduation ideas with you by now too. But, I cave, I am totally a sobbing wimp. I have embraced the full meaning of homeschooling with heart.

Free Homeschool Editable Progress Report Card for Teen

You just can’t homeschool and teach your son from his first tiny baby step, to his first hold of a pencil, to his first feel of a car steering wheel and come away unscathed.

I need to look at all of this project graduation objectively instead of how I feel now.

Too, you know how up/down this past year was with the hubby.

So I savor every precious moment of life and I get spikes and shots of overflowing feelings when I get ready to write.

Stay tuned as I know I will eventually share but I keep myself reined in about project graduation lest I sound like I have totally lost it and possible unsound words make their indelible marks on the world wide web.

Free Homeschool Editable Progress Report Card for Teen

Enough of that. So what does this have to do with what I am sharing today?

Well I did want to share this picture with though it’s a tad bit out of focus. Tiny was on the other end but I do kid friendly pictures.

But, this was the day Mr. Senior 2013 finally got his driver’s license.  What a patient kid when all of that stuff hit us while I was in the middle of teaching him to drive.

After that jubilant day, the fun day came for insurance.

The insurance company gives a discount for good grades in school and needed a current progress report.

Oh yippee, I needed another form and figured you would need one like this too sometime or the other.

Since I need something a little more official looking than the pretty progress report  (Option 16)

I already have on the site which is basically used to satisfy reporting for those that live in countries/states like this, I put this report together. It really acts as our final report card too.

The sample above is what eventually will go on the site. I left what I could on it from when I used it last year and added a few notes to explain how it is set up.

It is editable and I am in love with it. It worked just perfectly when I sent it to our insurance guy.

The only parts not editable are the comments and the signature which are normally done hand written.

Now that I have confessed all about Mr. Senior 2013, if you have a senior this year give him or her a hug today. You he or she needs it.

Still in the homeschooling trenches with you as I have two more sweet sons to go.
