How a Homeschool Planning Calendar is Superior to a Regular Calendar

June 24, 2022 | Leave a Comment
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

Once you learn the differences between a homeschool planning calendar and regular calendar there is no going back. When creating my homeschool planner, my planning calendar is one of the first things I print.

It’s ready way before my year starts or I print my planner.

What exactly is a planning calendar? It is a calendar which communicates the dates you and your children will count as official school days; it’s a visual of which dates you plan to have off during the year.

In addition, your family can see your in-teacher dates, (yes I have them) vacation times, and end of the school year date. Noting winter breaks and summer breaks are equally important.

Additionally, if you live in a state where you have record keeping, you notate reporting periods. If you must report to a proctor, you add report card dates.

How a Homeschool Planning Calendar is Superior to a Regular Calendar

Planning Your Year Homeschool

As you can see, it’s VERY different than just a regular calendar. A regular calendar is not for planning, it’s just for reference.

By using a schedule you are getting these benefits:

  • freedom because you see a plan for how to fit in learning
  • setting the pace of the year to suit your family
  • planning for rest periods which suit your family
  • keeping family time a priority by planning vacations
  • making time for you the teacher by shading in your workdays
  • seeing a visual of the year keeps your goals realistic and within reach

From this list, you see that making school fit you and your family is what is important.

Although some feel that planning like this is confining, they miss the point.

It has quite the opposite effect. Freedom comes from controlling what you can and letting go when you can’t.

After all, it’s not the schedule or plan that is a mistake. It’s the part where some think a schedule can’t be changed or moved around.

There is no doubt about it — this quote may be overused and I whole heartedly agree. It’s timeless for a reason.

“If You Fail to Plan, You Are Planning to Fail” — Benjamin Franklin

It’s that simple. There are many reasons that I’ve homeschooled, worked, and been able to run a site/ blog.

The best one is no secret and that is I planned every year.

Everything has a place. Oh, don’t think by any stretch that I maintained everything in stone. I didn’t and still don’t. I have many days where I’m frazzled, but I have way more where I’m fulfilled.

However, I never allowed a planning schedule to make me feel like I was hemmed in.

Tracking Your Homeschool Year

Next, there is another feature on the homeschool schedule which I add and is important. The feature is a part to help you track your days and weeks you homeschool.

Even if you don’t need to record keep, tracking days and weeks is an extremely visual way to track your success.

Hear my heart when I say you can be constantly barraged either by self-doubt or from others if you’re doing enough. That was my initial mindset when I started creating these forms more than 10 years ago.

How to Plan Your Homeschool Year

Little did I know the feature of tracking days and weeks would keep me positive. You don’t worry if you’re doing enough because you see your progress daily and weekly.

So, look exactly at how I planned and use the form every year. I’m using one of my schedules from a previous year.

First, look at how my form is set up. By the way, after I update it each year, I keep the updated version at Step 5a. Choose Unique Forms JUST for You.

How a Homeschool Planning Calendar is Superior to a Regular Calendar

Further, here are the flexible ways you can use it:

  • Because there are 12 months, you can begin and end with the months you want. If you don’t school year-round, no problem. Again, just pick up at the month you’re starting and plan to when you want stop. The point is the form is very flexible.
  • After the month where you kept track (look at picture below) of the days you homeschooled, note them on the line provided. Add the days as you go along so you have the total at the end.
  • Use the key at the bottom of the form to use different color highlighters or symbols for dates you want to track.
  • In addition, highlight holidays you celebrate. Everyone does not celebrate the same holidays, so I don’t include U.S. holidays. The form is there for you to note the important days to your family.

Now, look below at how my hardworking and highly useful no fluff schedule works.

How a Homeschool Planning Calendar is Superior to a Regular Calendar

Notice these 5 important points in how to use it.

  1. Use one color to shade or outline the days you plan to school.
  2. Then use another to plan the days you won’t school.
  3. Also circle or add in teacher days for you. I didn’t include any here because I wanted to focus on showing you how to track school days.
  4. Count the days cumulatively. This way you know EXACTLY where you are at in your school year. For example, 180 days is a typical school year. Some schools follow 130 or 160. Knowing how many days you school in a 12-month period is empowering.
  5. Likewise, seeing my flex days or days not planned shows me how much time I have to move around.

Also, if you’ll notice on my form, I took off almost the whole month of April. Here in Texas, it’s plain insane to try to do too much during the hot summer months.

Instead, we enjoy the cooler days of spring and finish up my year in the summer; I still have time in June to flex with.

Don’t homeschool another year without this awesome form.

How to Choose the Perfect Homeschool Planner for Multiple Students

June 19, 2022 | Leave a Comment
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

How to choose the perfect homeschool planner for multiple students can be easy when you have the right tools. And a homeschool planner should have unique sections to use for multiple children.

Besides keeping you organized, a homeschool planner for multiple children should include distinct lesson plan templates.

Too, I will show you exactly how to choose the almost perfect homeschool planner for multiple children without breaking the bank.

Besides, using a teacher planner which is used for 30 students is not the same as creating a unique homeschool planner for multiple kids.

Don’t adjust your unique lifestyle to a premade planner that is not created for our homeschool lifestyle. Teacher planners are created for classroom use and not family use.

How to Choose the Perfect Homeschool Planner for Multiple Students

Homeschool Planner for Multiple Students

First, learn what you need exactly in your homeschool planner for multiple kids.

Look at 5 questions you want to consider before you purchase or put a planner together.

5 Questions to Ask Before You Buy Or Put Together a Homeschool Planner for Multiple Students

  1. Will you homeschool year-round or use the same calendar months used by public school?
  2. Do you want assignment sheets to be filled out by you or will your students be filling out assignment sheets?
  3. What are the advantages of putting together my own versus buying one premade?
  4. Do I live in a state which requires more stringent record keeping and thus need more recording keeping pages?
  5. How important is room to write which is directly related to the size of the planner you want?

So, after you have your clear goals in mind, whittle down your choices.

For example, when you’re teaching multiple students, you need a choice of lesson planning templates.

How to Choose the Perfect Homeschool Planner for Multiple Students

I used lesson planning templates when my kids were younger and when they are older, I did a mix and match of forms.

Using an editable lesson planning page allows me to pick and choose the subjects I want to fill in each year for each child.

I’ve created unique lesson plan templates which can be used for at least 4 if not more children when you use the two-page spread.

Because almost every line is editable you can fill in with your student’s name or a subject. You need lots of flexibility when you have multiple children because you have multiple ages.

Having multiple ages creates problems for most planners. They will either have something too young-ish or templates not flexible for young children as well.

Homeschool Planner to Use for Multiple Ages

I’ve found making my own has been the key to getting that perfect homeschool planner

Also, I use a combination of either a DIY Student Planner OR a weekly checklist. You may need both in your planner.

How to Choose the Perfect Homeschool Planner for Multiple Students

In addition, if you’re trying to save ink (me not so much because I love color) I have an editable form for a 180 lesson plan template.

You can find black and white lesson plan templates here at Step 4. Choose Lesson Planning Pages of my 7 Step DIY Homeschool Planner.

How to Choose the Perfect Homeschool Planner for Multiple Students

Moreover, a lesson plan template created for homeschool use should have spaces for you to pen in lesson plans for you to teach your children together.

This lesson planning template I create for 3 or 4 kids.

It also has room at the bottom to pen it topics or subjects your kids learned together.

You don’t really need that much room to write skill subjects in when kids are real young. Jotting down main ideas is what I noted at younger ages.

By the way, if you have 4 kids and one or two of your children are in PreK or K grades, you can divide this template where you list your children’s names with a light pencil.

All my forms have so much flexibility so take your time choosing.

How to Choose the Perfect Homeschool Planner for Multiple Students

Unique Forms for a Multiple Children Planner

Although lesson planning pages and weekly checklist are the heart of keeping your organized, there are other forms you may want for multiple ages.

  • If you live in a state where you have to keep records or you have a high school teen, you need to track attendance. This Colorful and Editable Homeschooled Student Attendance Record has 3 color choices.
  • Whether you want to keep grades or not is another section to add to your planner for multiple students. The editable grade keepers are here on Step 5b. Choose MORE Unique Forms JUST for You!
  • In addition, field trips are a huge part of homeschooling whether you have multiple children or not; you can find field trip tracking forms also at Step 5b. Choose MORE Unique Forms JUST for You!
  • Lastly, goals are a huge part of planning for multiple ages. You’ll love the goals forms I have here at Step 3. Choose Goals/Objectives.

Organized the pages for a unique homeschool planner to use with different ages does not have to be complicated, but it should be unique.

Again, don’t try to adjust your unique needs to a planner which may have a bunch of useless forms.

The Best Colorful Undated Dynamic Daily Homeschool Planner

January 8, 2021 | 4 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

When I created my original 7 Step DIY Homeschool Planner it grew in popularity quickly and it’s still going strong; I knew the key to creating a daily homeschool planner is to create one which works for you THIS year.

Early on I recognized several of the key problem areas with daily homeschool planners.

Look at some of the problem areas with homeschool planners and how I met the challenge with my homeschool planners.

The Best Colorful Undated Dynamic Daily Homeschool Planner

Undated Dynamic Daily Homeschool Planner

  • One of the BIGGEST pet peeves with printable planners is DATED lesson pages. All my homeschool lesson planning pages are UNDATED. When life happens, you don’t need to feel behind. Life comes first. So penciling in your next lesson number is key to sanity and making school fit life.
  • Another one is paying for “fluff pages” like calendars. Not that calendars are fluff pages, but paying for one that does NOT fit the way you plan THIS YEAR can be a waste. All my homeschool planners give you the power to decide which types of calendars you need. I prepare 3 type of calendars each year. One is for appointments and it’s a two page monthly calendar. The next one is for planning your school year and the last one is a plain calendar. You decide which one, two, or three calendars go in your planner.
  • Next at the very heart of an awesome daily homeschool planner are flexible lesson planning pages.

Because each homeschool family is unique, you need homeschool lesson planning pages which can be adjusted to your needs as your children grow.

Squeal, I’m so excited to share my most recent daily homeschool planner, The Dynamic Daily Homeschool Planner.

Dynamic Daily Homeschool Planner

Look at these features.

  • It is letter size. I want ample room to write and a letter size planner gives you lots of room for writing.
  • It’s an ALL color planner. I LOVE beautiful designs and I know you do too.
  • You print and bind it with coil. This allows the planner to lay flat and with no BIG rings in the center of the planner to get in the way of writing.
  • Because it’s an undated planner, you write in the date daily. If life happens and you skip a few days, just pick up with the next school day. No getting behind because it’s YOUR schedule. Homeschooling adjusts to YOUR life instead of you feeling behind if you miss a day. There is NO erasing because you didn’t get behind. You don’t buy a dated planner each year and waste money.
What the dynamic homeschooler planner contains

Then look at these other features which makes my newest homeschool planner dynamic.

Unique Daily Homeschool Planner Pages in One Download

  • You get 3 beautiful homeschool planner covers to switch out each year.
  • It has 4 FLEXIBLE EDITABLE homeschool lesson planning pages which are two pages each. (Look at the templates below.) You fill in the subjects and students’ name and then print the number of lessons you need. By providing you two pages, you do not waste ink. What I mean is that some states require 130 lessons each year and others require 160 or 180 lessons each year. By giving you two editable pages you print EXACTLY the number of lessons you need for each year. Besides, younger kids may need less lessons while teens may require 180 for a school year.
  • Also, I have 3 beautiful inside pages to match the cover. Gorgeous.
  • There are 3 pre-homeschool year planning pages to match the covers. As educators, our planning year starts before our kids begin school. Having a place to jot down your plan works.
  • In addition, some families prefer LIGHT monthly lesson planning. There is a set of 12 months pages to pencil in your thoughts for the day. This is great to use for unit studies, younger children, or teens who don’t need a lot of direction.
  • Two beautiful Year at a Glance Pages so you keep on task for your yearly goals.
  • Reflection and Goals Setting Divider Page
  • Teacher Improvement & Keep it Real Page
  • Student Goal Setting Page
  • Teacher Focus Page
  • Monthly and Yearly Planning Divider Page
  • One Attendance Record Tracking by the Physical Year (one student on one page)
  • Two Editable Attendance Records Where You Fill in Beginning & Ending Month (different colors & one student on one page)
  • 1 Editable Attendance Page with 4 students on one page. (Just print another one for large families)
  • Two Books To Read List

Homeschool Planner

Additionally, to make this newest dynamic daily homeschool planner fit your needs each year, add other free pages from my original and awesome 7 Step DIY Homeschool Planner.

For example, update the dynamic daily homeschool planner each year by adding the current year two page monthly calendar.

Furthermore, add high school planning pages or a grade keeper if you have to track grades.

Add in editable teacher and student schedules to this current planner if you have the need for it too.

Likewise if you need preschool readiness or a kindergarten evaluation, add them to this newest daily planner.

The beauty of any homeschool planner should be adding homeschool pages and adjusting the planner to your unique needs.

4 Flexible Editable Homeschool Lesson Planning Pages

Too, you’ll love the four flexible editable two page per day homeschool lesson planning pages you get with the dynamic daily homeschool planner.

Look at them below as I explain about each one.

Lesson Planning form 1.

Note: You get two pages so that you type in the editable boxes and then print as many lesson planning pages as you need.

This format is one of my original formats with space at the top to put the subjects and vertical text on left side for names of your children.

The boxes across the top can be used for the same subjects your kids cover.

It has a natural division for three kids, but you can divide the space up anyway you need.

In addition, if you want to use it for one kid just fill in the subjects across the top.

The bottom box I used for projects we do together or to note electives or subjects we learn together.

The Best Colorful Undated Dynamic Daily Homeschool Planner

Lesson Planning form 2.

This second lesson planning has more editable boxes. It can be designed to use for one or more kids depending on how you use the boxes.

In addition, the boxes across the top can be subjects for each kid and works when your kids have various subjects and not all the same.

Remember, this is a daily planner, so you don’t need a lot of room to write in one daily lesson under each box.

Again, YOUR planner, YOU decide best how to organize your daily planner by typing in the boxes what you want.-

The bottom box I used for projects we do together or to note electives or subjects we learn together.

The Best Colorful Undated Dynamic Daily Homeschool Planner

Lesson Planning form 3.

This next one is another color choice.

You can use one color for one set of kids and another color for your other child. In addition, you can use this color layout for half your year and another color for the second half.

Remember I LOVE color and like my planner to rock color and choices during the whole year, I give you these 4 different lesson planning pages in the one download.

The Best Colorful Undated Dynamic Daily Homeschool Planner

Lesson Planning form 4.

Like the second lesson planning page above, you have multiple boxes and another color scheme to mix and match pages.

Your homeschool planner should be as unique and as flexible as you need it to be each year.

2021 New Year New Goals Setting Beautiful and Practical Form

I’ve never been more happier to say goodbye to a year. However, I always like to take time to reflect not just on the past, but to look forward to the 2021 new year new goals setting.

2021 New Year New Goals Setting Form

I love this form which I do each year because it reminds me to keep goal setting simple and not pen so that I can reach them; most important I remind myself to have Less of This.

It’s important to remind myself that some things I need to let go.

I don’t want to have pie in the sky goals, but to remember to homeschool and live simply.

Letting go of things that are not working at the end of the year is important to growing the next year.

I like something more generic that lets me decide what goals I want to make instead of focusing on only the 4 areas of education or homeschool, health, spiritual, and personal goals which I normally focus on,

I jot down 3 things that I want to improve or do more of and 3 things I need to do less of.

New Year New Goals

Don’t forget, I have 2 other printables too for goal setting.

2021 New Year New Goals Setting Beautiful and Practical Form

One is Goals for the Year and the other one is an End of the Year Flashback for the kids. It has several color choices.

I have the two color choices for the homeschool planning pages 2020 to 2021 ready today.

Long range planning is key to sticking to homeschool, so I know you’ll love getting these color choices early in the year.

Curriculum Planning Pages

Remember that I create both academic and planning calendars. Although they may seem similar, they are not.

When you take a closer look, you’ll see that each calendar has a different purpose.

The form today is for you to PLAN your school year and track the number of days and weeks your kids are doing school.

I have all 12 months on one page which means you can start on any month that you begin homeschooling and move forward to plan your year.

Plain calendars (okay, they are not so plain) are just for noting dates and for your reference. I don’t create them to write appointments on them OR to track your school.

Plain calendars are always on Step. 2. Choose Calendars/Appointment Keepers.

The 2 page spread appointment keepers are for appointments and have more room for writing.

The forms today are to plan your homeschool year with days off, teacher planning days and holidays to take off.

It gives you a glimpse of your homeschool year. Plan and track your school year on it.

Because this form is not a calendar but more of a planning tool, I keep it each year at Step 5a. Choose Unique forms JUST for You!

If you need to see how to use it go to that step Step 5a. Choose Unique forms JUST for You! to look at my sample copy.

This form today is NOT the 2 page spread calendar. You can grab that too.

step-2-of-the-7-step-free-homeschool-planner-tinas-dynamic-homeschool-plus

I have two color choices like I mentioned. Download both or just grab one. You can keep one in your planner and print one separately.

Sometimes I print two copies and keep one in the front and one in the back, but you really only need to have one.
