I have some fun facts about peregrine falcons for you to use in your unit study. Also, grab my Peregrine Falcon Unit Study and Lapbook for more ideas.

The peregrine falcon is one of the most fascinating birds of prey, known for its incredible speed, keen eyesight, and presence around the world.

We are going to explore the life, behavior, and habitat of peregrine falcons while incorporating creative learning through watercolor painting.

Ideal for upper elementary through high school homeschoolers, this study can be adapted to various learning levels. Peregrines are incredibly adaptable.

They live in mountains, coastal cliffs, deserts, and even urban areas; you will find them on every continent except Antarctica.

In cities, they often nest on tall buildings or bridges, using them like cliffs. This adaptability helped them make a remarkable comeback after being endangered in the mid-20th century due to pesticide use (especially DDT).

For fun and science exploration we are going to do a simple watercolor painting of a Peregrine Falcon.

I am not claiming to be a watercolor expert, I am a mom who had to learn some things herself to teach my own child. Plus, it’s just downright fun for me as well!

But before that let me give you some facts and fantastic activities to fill out this mini unit and help your child soar through it.

7 FUN FACTS ABOUT PEREGRINE FALCONS

  1. Peregrine falcons mate for life. Both peregrine parents care for the chicks, but the female is larger and does most of the brooding. The male (called a tiercel) is smaller and faster, making him the better hunter during nesting season.
  2. The word “peregrine” means “wanderer” which is fitting, since some migrate thousands of miles.
  3. Falconry is the practice of training birds of prey and often uses peregrines due to their speed and intelligence.
  4. Peregrine falcons are aerodynamic masters. When diving to catch prey, their wings tuck tight to their bodies, reducing drag and increasing speed. Their top recorded dive speed is 242 mph, faster than a Formula One car or a skydiver.
  5. A peregrine’s eyesight is about 8 times better than a human’s. They can spot a pigeon from over a mile away. Their eyes are protected by a nictitating membrane, a third eyelid that acts like goggles while diving at high speed.
  6. Peregrines have been used in falconry for over 3,000 years, even ancient Egyptian pharaohs trained them. In WWII, trained peregrines were used in the UK to intercept enemy carrier pigeons.
  7. Adults have a blue-gray back, barred underparts, and a dark head with that famous “moustache” mark. Chicks and juveniles are browner and have streaky, rather than barred, chests to help them blend into their surroundings.

As they paint their Peregrine falcon have your child focus on the following features:

  • A harp beak with a special “tomial tooth” for killing prey.
  • Long, pointed wings for fast flying.
  • Large eyes that can spot prey from over a mile away.
  • Dark “moustache” marks help reduce sun glare.

You will need:

  • Watercolor paper
  • Sharpened pencil
  • Watercolors
  • Small paintbrushes
  • Permanent black marker
  • Water
  • Inspiration photo or figure

Begin by drawing out a loose outline of your peregrine inspiration. I grabbed this Peregrine Falcon Figurine I had because I loved the pose but there are many wonderful pictures online or in books you can choose to use as a model.

Once you are happy with it, erase the lines until you can just barely see them so that they don’t show through your watercolor.

Paint the inside of your outline with just plain water, once it is wet begin adding the lightest color and spreading it around the image inside the lines.

Allow to dry and then use a small brush to dab darker spots all over the falcons chest and wings.

Next, you can move on to the yellow parts like the beak and claws as they are not touching the still wet parts.

Now paint a light wash of blue all around your falcon to make it stand out. You can paint directly onto the dry paper or use a wet on wet technique by painting it first with plain water and then a light wash of color.

Easy Human Body Crafts For Elementary Featuring A Tongue Project

I have a super simple tongue craft today using just a few sheets of construction paper, no special supplies, just a low-prep idea for mom and fun for the kids.

Did you know that they disproved the tongue map? While it was once believed that certain areas of the tongue had taste buds to detect sweet, sour, bitter, and salty they now say that the entire tongue has taste receptor cells to detect flavor.

But certain areas may be more sensitive to specific tastes. The tip of the tongue is particularly receptive to sweetness, while the sides are more attuned to sourness and saltiness. The back of the tongue is where bitterness is most keenly detected.

6 FUN FACTS ABOUT TASTE BUDS

  1. The average person has between 2,000 and 10,000 taste buds.
  2.  Some people have an unusually high number of taste buds and are known as “supertasters.” They are more sensitive to bitter tastes and may find certain foods, like broccoli and coffee, overly intense.
  3. Each individual taste bud contains between 50 to 150 taste receptor cells.
  4. Taste buds have a remarkable ability to regenerate. Even if they are damaged, they can usually grow back within a few days. However, some taste buds stop being replaced as people age, which leads to a decrease in taste sensitivity.
  5. Taste buds aren’t just on your tongue, they are on the roof of your mouth, your throat, and even your esophagus.
  6. You don’t taste spicy foods, when food “ tastes” too spicy, it’s actually stimulating the pain receptors in your mouth and not the taste buds.

The idea here with this project is to focus more on the fact that the taste buds are responsible for detecting flavor and learning what those 5 are.

KIDS HUMAN BODY CRAFTS

The 5th flavor we haven’t mentioned yet is Umami- A savory or meaty flavor found in things like mushrooms, tomatoes, aged cheeses, seaweed, and soy products.

For younger children like preschoolers you might want to focus on the original 4 to keep it simple and easier to understand.

While there are five basic tastes, our perception of flavor is much more complex than that. Flavor involves a combination of taste, smell, texture, temperature, and even our emotions and memories.

Saliva also plays a crucial role in taste perception. It dissolves food molecules, allowing them to interact with the taste receptors.

PAPER TONGUE PROJECT

Along with our paper tongue project you will want to gather up some items that fit the sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and even the umami to taste test.

Dig into the refrigerator and pantry to find limes, sugar, salt, vinegar, and whatever else.

Try blindfolding your child and see if they can tell you what each flavor is.

  • Scissors

First, cut a sheet of pink construction paper into a general tongue shape.

The Man Who Found Out Why The Story of Gregor Mendel

Father Gregor Mendel, with his great curiosity about nature and his passion of numbers, experimented with plants and wrote down his observations. Although few people knew about his work during his lifetime, the world now recognizes Gregor Mendel as the founder of the science of genetics.

Next, let’s learn why Mendel chose peas.

WHY DID MENDEL CHOOSE PEAS

Mendel chose the garden pea (Pisum sativum) for a few very clever reasons:

Peas have a short growing season- This allowed Mendel to observe numerous generations in a short amount of time, helping him to piece together how traits were inherited across generations.

Peas are easy to grow- Pea plants are hardy and they grow quickly. They do not require a huge amount of space or special conditions, which made them a convenient subject for extensive breeding experiments.

Peas have easily distinguishable traits- Mendel chose seven traits to observe in his experiments — flower color, flower position, seed color, seed shape, pod color, pod shape, and plant height. Each of these traits fell into two distinctly different varieties (such as purple or white flowers), which made it simpler for him to track and compare across generations.

Peas normally self-pollinate-Pea flowers typically pollinate themselves, which meant Mendel could control their breeding when necessary by manually removing the male parts and adding pollen from another plant — a process called cross-pollination.

Peas produce large numbers of offspring- Every pod contains numerous peas (seeds), yielding large sample sizes for each cross. Large sample sizes meant more reliable data and more confidence in his results.

MENDEL’S TWO KEY PRINCIPLES

Using pea plants, Mendel made careful crosses, and he kept detailed notes about which traits appeared in the following generations. His results challenged the popular view of the day that traits blended together. Instead, he demonstrated that traits are inherited as separate, particulate factors — what we now know as genes.

Mendel’s two key principles — the law of segregation and the law of independent assortment — form the basis of classical genetics today.

The Law of Segregation- This means each parent has two copies of a trait (like purple or white flowers), but it only passes on one of those to its baby (seed).

Example- Each parent has 2 socks, a purple and a white, but when it’s time to put a sock into a bag (the seed), it picks just 1 sock. The baby might get a purple or a white — you don’t know which — it’s a bit of a surprise!

The Law of Independent Assortment- This means different traits, like flower color and pea shape, are passed on independently of each other.

Example- Your socks (flower color) and your hat (pea shape) are tossed into separate bags. So choosing a purple sock doesn’t affect which hat you grab — you might grab a smooth hat or a wrinkly hat — it’s all a bit random!

Because of Mendel’s two laws we know…

Each trait is given independently, making for lots of wonderful variation.

Babies get half their traits from their mom and half from their dad.

PEAS IN A POD KEYCHAIN CRAFT

You will need:

  • Polymer clay in a medium green (pod)
  • Lighter yellow green(peas)
  • Small keychain rings or keychain hooks
  • Jewelry wire
  • Toothpicks or clay sculpting tool
  • Small plastic knife
  • Baking sheet (to bake clay)

First, work your clay by kneading it between your hands until it’s soft and pliable.


 Break off small, equal-sized balls of the lighter clay,  these will be your “peas.” Roll them into smooth, round balls.

Using the darker green clay, roll a small piece into a short tube, about 2-3 inches in length.

Using your thumb, press a groove down the center of the tube to create a shallow “pod.”You can use a roller to get it flat, smooth, and pliable.

Place a length of wire bent in the center at the top of the pea pod.

Gently press your small clay peas into the groove in a row.

Fold the clay pod slightly upward to surround the peas, but leave them visible. Pinch the two points at the end of the pod closed.

Echinoderms are a group of sea animals that have some really unique features, setting them apart from all other life in the ocean.

How To Make A Simple Sea Urchin Craft: Echinoderms For Kids

Echinoderms are marine animals, meaning they spend their entire lives in saltwater environments.

They can be found in all sorts of ocean habitats, from shallow tide pools to the deepest parts of the sea.

The name “echinoderm” comes from Greek words that mean “spiny skin.”

FACTS ABOUT ECHINODERMS FOR KIDS

Most animals, including humans, have what’s called bilateral symmetry. This means if you draw a line down the middle of our body, the left and right sides are pretty much mirror images of each other.

But echinoderms are different! Most of them have radial symmetry as adults. Imagine a bicycle wheel: all the parts radiate out from a central point.

That’s how an adult starfish or sea urchin is structured. They often have five or more arms or sections arranged around their middle. Baby echinoderms actually start out with bilateral symmetry and then develop radial symmetry as they grow up.

Echinoderms have a fascinating way of moving using tiny structures called tube feet. These are small, flexible, hollow appendages that are usually found on the underside of their arms or body. They are part of a special system called the water vascular system.

This system is a network of canals filled with seawater. Echinoderms can control the water pressure in these canals, which allows them to extend and retract their tube feet. These little feet act like suction cups, helping the animals to grip onto surfaces, crawl along the seabed, and hold onto their food.

ECHINODERMS FACTS FOR KIDS

Echinoderms don’t have a brain like we do. Instead, they have a simpler nervous system. They usually have a nerve ring that circles their mouth and radial nerves that extend out into each of their arms or along their body.

This network of nerves helps them sense their environment, detect food, and coordinate their movements.

How To Make A Simple Sea Urchin Craft: Echinoderms For Kids

Some echinoderms have an amazing ability called regeneration. This means they can regrow lost or damaged body parts! Starfish are famous for this.

If a starfish loses an arm, it can often grow a completely new one. In some cases, if a piece of a starfish arm breaks off along with a part of the central disc (the middle part), that piece can even grow into a whole new starfish!

TYPES OF ECHINODERMS

  • Starfish- Probably the most recognizable echinoderms. They typically have five arms radiating from a central disc, but some species can have many more.

They use their tube feet on the underside of their arms to slowly crawl along rocks and the seafloor.

Starfish are often predators, feeding on things like clams and mussels by using their strong arms to pry open the shells and then pushing their stomach out to digest the soft part.

These Butterscotch Crunch Starfish look delicious.

  • Sea urchins- Round or oval-shaped and are covered in spines of different lengths and thicknesses. These spines provide protection and can sometimes even be venomous. Sea urchins mostly eat algae and other small bits of organic matter.

They have a special mouth on their underside with five teeth that they use to scrape food off surfaces. You can find sea urchins in various colors, from black and brown to purple and red.

  • Sea cucumbers- Have long, soft, and leathery bodies, making them look quite different from other echinoderms. They move slowly along the ocean floor using their tube feet and sometimes by wiggling their bodies.

Sea cucumbers are important scavengers, meaning they eat tiny particles of food and organic matter that they find in the sediment.

Some sea cucumbers can even eject parts of their internal organs as a defense mechanism, and then regenerate those parts later!

  • Sand dollars- are flat, round echinoderms that live on sandy bottoms in shallow coastal areas. They are often found partially or completely buried in the sand.

ECHINODERMS FOR KIDS

They have tiny spines and tube feet on their upper and lower surfaces that help them move and collect food particles from the sand. The beautiful patterns you often see on the shells of dead sand dollars are made up of the arrangement of their skeletal plates.

Paper plates sand dollars are easy and a great way to learn about the features of starfish. Look at my post Fascinating Life Cycle Of A Sand Dollar & Hydro Dipped Craft.

Use these shells, starfish, and sand dollars to create sensory bins, dioramas, or add to the science shelf for exploration.

  • Brittle stars- look a bit like starfish, but their arms are much longer, thinner, and more flexible. They move much more quickly than starfish by using snake-like movements of their arms.

However, just like starfish, they can regenerate lost arms. Brittle stars are very common in many marine habitats and can be found hiding under rocks or in crevices.

You will need:

  • Foam balls
  • Toothpicks
  • Craft paint
  • Craft glue

First, if you can only find round styrofoam balls instead of the half use a knife to carefully slice them in half.

Paint your styrofoam half whatever color you desire and set it aside.

For older children, you can have them cut away a small cross-section like this to create an area for drawing the sea urchins anatomy inside.

For younger learners skip this step and focus on the outside.

The quickest way I found to paint all the toothpicks is to put some paint in a bowl with a little water to thin it out and roll them around in the watered-down paint.

You will need a lot of toothpicks to make a nice full sea urchin.

Shake off the excess (wear gloves to avoid painted fingertips) and press the toothpicks into the styrofoam ball.
