Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

I have a free human body unit study. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas.

Taa, daa. It’s here. The completed human body lapbook. Have you been following along as we did our huge human body lapbook and unit study?

We have had a ton of fun with our human body unit study and today, I want to give you one more minibook about the eye and some clip art to go on the outside of the book.

Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study

First, did you notice we turned this lapbook landscape?

Human Body Lapbook

The human body lapbook was free for a limited time.

Human Body Lapbook @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus
Human Body Lapbook @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

It was so big and we used a legal size file folder too. So we added all the books we did inside and the pictures above will help you to see where we placed our books.

Of course, like I always say, you can use as many of mine as you want to and mix and match other things you want so that the lapbook reflects what you want to teach your kids.

That is one reason I also share my minibooks separately. Sometimes you want to mix and match.

Too, we added one more picture, which is a visual labeling the different parts of the eye and we simply glued that onto our page because this unit was getting big for us.

Tiny was ready to move on to another topic, but I wanted to be sure he was familiar with the parts of the eye too.

Don’t you just love it when you have way more activities to do and then just have to stop so that you can move on?

Also, I created several different pieces to decorate the outside of the lapbook flaps.

You can use any free color pages or use these three pieces of a cover page I have below.

Also, I included body clip art with the name of the organ above it.

Tiny wrote in the name of the organ, colored it and he cut them out to place on the outside of his lapbook. I include a few other decorative pieces to go on the outside flap of your lapbook.

I hope you love them and I hope you love this unit study as much as we have.

Edible Skin Project and Free Homeschool Human Body Unit Study

This edible skin project is the next fun hands-on for our human body unit study. Also I have this Human Body Crafts page for more fun ideas.

Right away, I will tell you we had more fun though a flop (or we at least thought so) with our edible skin project for our homeschool unit study human body.

Edible Skin Project and Free Homeschool Human Body Unit Study

You know I tout that I do my best to use what we have here in the house. Sometimes it turns out well and other times not so good.

Too, some things we don’t have in the house because well they don’t exist here in Cuenca or at least the part we live at here in Ecuador.

Things like ready made icings I can’t find.

Homeschool Unit Study Human Body. Hands-on Activity 5. Edible Skin + Skin and Major Body Systems Minibook @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

The human body lapbook was free for a limited time.

So for this project I had the heavenly dulce de leche in the house.

By the way, have you ever heard of it?

It is basically translated sweet milk and it is made by caramelizing sugar in milk.

This heavenly stuff though takes hours to make home made, is sold readily on the store shelves here and was the closest thing I had to icing for our edible skin project today.

Edible Skin Project @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus 1
Edible Skin Project @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus 2

Look at what we grabbed and had made:

■ jello. We actually have to make this and though normally it doesn’t matter how thick it is when we eat it, it did this time.
■marshmallows (tiny ones work good too, but they don’t have them here)
■gummy worms
■ dulce de leche (a fruit roll up would have worked better or an icing, but then again we don’t have that here either in Ecuador.)
■few toothpicks

So Tiny took about 6 of the marshmallows and laid them out. We pushed a few toothpicks through them to hold them together.

Going good so far.

Edible Skin Project @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus 3
Edible Skin Project @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus 4

Then we took our not so solid jello and layered on top, then the fun mess started.

Tiny tried to plow through like a trooper by adding the dulce de leche, but our edible skin was looking more like an explosion by a five year old.

Edible Skin Project @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus 5

Tiny was intent on finishing it and added a few gummy worms for hair follicles.

Of course, he had to look over it for a while. We both lost it laughing, but thought it was the most delicious flop we had tasted in a while.

I have the next two minibooks for the heart lapbook.

Day 2. Look to the Sky.

Day 3. Look to Pokemon.

5 Days of Look Alive day 3

Day 4.Look to Free Unit Studies

5 Days of Look Alive day 4

Moving on along through our series: Look Alive:Winter Homeschooling Ideas & Downloads, Day 5 is Look to Free Teacher Guides.

If there is anything that will get me pumped about homeschooling during the long cold winter days is the thought of planning.

I love to plan anytime of the year. These free teacher’s guides I rounded up are about a variety of subjects and have tidbits of cool facts in each one.

Some of them are from a museum and they talk about tours, but the rest of the pages have great background information on each topic.

Sometimes you don’t want to plan a unit study, you just want to cover something different for the day and these free guides are the perfect bite size pieces.

The first set of guides are at the Field Museum.

Look at a few of the subjects they have:

Gregor Mendel: Planting the Seeds of Genetics.
George Washington Carver.
Plants of the World.
Maps: Finding Our Place in the World.
Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters.

There are four pages of great freebie awesomeness to look through and a variety of grades. Be sure to download what you want in case it ever goes away.

Then this next site, SunSentinel, is equally awesome and has so many freebies I can’t count them.

Look at a few of the things they have and take your time downloading the overflowing amount of freebies.

ARTS

Opera – It’s for Everyone! Grades 6-Adult
Degas in Bronze-Grades 6-Adult

CHARACTER EDUCATION

Power of You – Grades 8-12
Your Character Your Choice! It’s Up to You

SCIENCE

Amazing Orchids-Grades 3-5
LegoLand, 4-5
STEAM – Grades 9-12

Then I love this whole page of resources to learn about the winter for the upper grades (6 to 12th). I always strive to maintain the fun and hands-on ideas even in the upper grade.

Look at at just a few of the things on this super page.

From the site:

Lesson Plans

Storm Clouds
Students in grades 6-12 use CERES cloud data and a weather map to explore cloud coverage during a winter storm.

Getting Physical: The Physics and Other Science Behind Winter Olympic Sports
Students in grades 6-12 research, write, and perform sportscasts that explain the physics behind their favorite sports in these cross-curricular activities.

Glacier National Park: “Hibernation-Migration Fascination”
Students in grades 7-12/ compare two different types of hibernation — the hibernation of bears and marmots.

ICS — Energy ( PDF, 901 KB, 21 pgs.)
In this module, students in grades 9-12 investigate how energy absorption and water affect temperature.

Physics and Biomechanics
A learning module for grades 11-12 that uses the sports of luge and figure skating to teach four basic mechanical concepts: linear kinematics, linear dynamics, projectile motion, and conservation of angular momentum.

Games & Activities

Don’t Be Too Flaky
Students measure the relative densities of water, ice, and snow. Data can be submitted to the website and displayed with data from around the world.

I hope you have enjoyed this 5 days series of winter homeschooling and now we have enough activities to keep us planning through the long cold winter days.

Are you ready for winter? Grab the other ideas below!

Homeschool Unit Study Human Body. Hands-on Activity 4. Making Blood + What Are the Components of Blood Minibook

October 14, 2015 | 7 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

No unit study about the homeschool unit study human body is done right without making some blood and learning about the valuable components of it. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more fun ideas.

The human body lapbook was free for a limited time.

Homeschool Unit Study Human Body. Hands-on Making Blood + What Are the Components of Blood

What is Blood Made of?

Besides, that is the best way to learn about the four basic components of blood.

At the bottom, I shared the video that helped us to kick off this activity and also helped us to pick out the ingredients.

What is blood hands on activity and blood components minibook for a human body homeschool unit study @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Look at the ingredients we used, again, which we had on hand at the house.

■plastic bottle
■marshmallows (we only the big ones, so we cut up a few of the big ones)
■mini box of chocolate cereal that the boys didn’t like
■raisins
■corn syrup and water
■yellow and red die
■salt

How to Make Blood 2 @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

So after we gathered all of our supplies and a funnel and bowl or two, we started.

First Tiny poured the corn syrup in and mixed with a bit of water (not too much).

Mostly we used the corn syrup because I wanted it to look more like blood plasma in the beginning.

So he added yellow dye and some salt to represent the plasma.

We added salt to help him remember that though plasma is mostly made up of water, it also contains proteins, sugar and hormones. So adding the salt was just to help him remember some of the make up of plasma.

Next, we took our chocolate cereal and mixed in some red dye and coated it pretty good.

I liked the fact that the “red blood cells” started to give it color because they make up about 40 to 45% of the color.

Since red blood cells are round and look a little bit like a doughnut, without the hole in the middle, this round cereal was a pretty good imitation.

He started to add in the red dyed cereal to represent the red blood cells (or erythrocytes).

How to Make Blood 7 @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus
How To Make Blood 8 @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Next came a bite or two of marshmallows or rather he added in some of the white marshmallows to represent the white blood cells (or leukocytes), but not too many of them.

Since I had raisins, we added a few of them to represent blood platelets (or thrombocytes).

How to Make Blood 9 @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus
How To Make Blood 10 @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

We ended up with something nice and gross that he liked, but it sure helped him to remember the 4 basic components of blood.

Body Part Labeling and Skeleton Quiz Human Body Unit Study

October 9, 2015 | 2 Comments

The body part labeling and skeleton quiz minibooks are part of the completed human body unit study.

The human body lapbook was free for a limited time.

Body Part Labeling and Skeleton Quiz

Be sure to grab the other activities we have done so far with our Human Body Unit Study.

Also, make an eazy peazy DIY Stethoscope and a great project for a middle school kid is the Heart Pump activity. Too, do the rigid versus flexible bone activity too.

Today, I have two more minibooks for the Human Body Lapbook.

You already have the heart minibook and the Did You Know heart facts minbook.

One minibook is titled I am Wonderfully Made and it is a labeling of general body parts.

This book  can for sure be used for a younger child and a middle school kid.

Human Body Hands-on Unit Study Ideas

Because we have only read about the human body and not really done any written work, I wanted to be sure Tiny had a good visual placement of the major body parts.

I Am Wonderfully Made

The human body minibook is a triple fold book. Triple fold and put the cover on the outside.

Human Body Unit Study

Too, remember, because I don’t like to waste paper, the cover page for this body labeling book you already downloaded with the heart minibook.

Be sure to grab it and place it on this minibook.

Skeleton System Quick Quiz

This next fun minibook is a 4 question quiz about the skeleton system.

The four questions are:

■ How many bones are in your body?
■How many bones are in your skull?
■What is the largest bone?
■What is the smallest bone?

We generally pull out our file folder at this time and start trying to place the minibooks we have so far on the lapbook. But we don’t glue them yet until we are finished.

Generally though when I have about 4 minibooks or so, I do try to start laying them. Not all the time do I chose portrait position on the lapbook.

This lapbook just feels like it might look pretty hot if we turn the lapbook landscape. But that is generally what I do right now, which is to start looking at the layout.

However, we are still undecided, which is why we also keep the minibooks in a ziploc bag until we’re done.
