What an exciting time for that sweet little face that seemed to be learning their letters not too long ago.

Here is typically what is taught at the fifth-grade level.

Fifth grade homeschool is heavy in reading and writing with a focus on developing their comprehension and critical thinking skills.

 In mathematics fifth graders learn about fractions, decimals, and geometry.

They also solve word problems and develop their problem-solving skills.

In science topics would be the human body, and ecosystems. They also conduct experiments and develop their scientific inquiry skills.

Finally, there is a focus on American history, geography, government, and also study on different cultures and religions.

Let’s have a wonderful last year of elementary school.

  • Continue hands-on activities while moving to mastering more difficult skills- fun card games, science projects, field trips, and experiments.
  • Encourage Your Child’s Independence, giving your child the opportunity to learn how to do things for themselves, such as reading, writing, and solving math problems.
  • Teach them to ask for help when needed, but don’t do everything for them, give them slack but also a guiding hand.
  • Take Advantage of Online Resources and tools, use online resources such as educational websites, videos, and games to supplement their book learning.
  • Include classic chapter books to develop comprehension, fluency, and reading skills beyond the elementary level like Where The Red Fern Grows.

I have a few unique suggestions for every subject as well as a handful of extras and some tips for choosing and using a third-grade curriculum.

By third grade your child can be a bit more independent in his work.

He can understand more complicated math concepts and read at a higher level which means you may have to dig a little deeper to challenge them.

This is a transitional year that moves them from the most basic of learning to more complex topics and challenges like perfecting their cursive and preparation for higher math like double digit multiplication.

At this age children should be learning about the six areas of geography.

The 6 areas include the world in spatial terms, places and regions, physical systems, human systems, environment and society, and how geography is used.

Third Grade Homeschool Tips and Recommendations

  • Read to them every day with fantastic classic books, fairy tales, and new engaging chapter books to help develop language, vocabulary, and of course imagination.
  • Also include quiet reading time. Add anytime of day including right before bed.
  • Create a schedule that works for your family, if you work during the day, start school in the afternoon and finish up in the evening or dive right into learning in the morning right after breakfast.
  • You can begin to challenge them with more involved projects like dioramas, and expect more details in their writing.
  • Practice parts of speech in silly and memorable ways like with mad libs in addition to or instead of worksheets for a learning experience that feels more like fun.
  • Purchase or check out a wide variety of beautiful science picture books to naturally incorporate reading and science into the day.

Gone are the sweet little round cheeks of a baby and a taller leaner child is taking over.

I can assure you every phase has its joys spent with your heads leaning over a book learning new things and watching those little ‘aha!” light bulb moments come across their eyes.

At this age children can sit for longer periods of time but that still doesn’t mean they should sit at a desk or table all day long.

There is still much learning to be done through play, field trips, and fun activities.

We will include some technology and games too so that their interests continue to be explored and developed in these formative years.

Second graders are building up reading skills, continuing with print and cursive instruction, spelling, phonics, and copywork.

So, these are the skills we are going to focus on with the resources and tips I have.

  • If you are not doing it already, consider beginning a morning time routine. It is such a wonderful slow start to the day. This usually includes reading aloud, music, character training, and handicrafts.
  • Keep in mind that children learn different things at different rates, your second grader may be a whiz at math but hasn’t started reading yet and that’s okay. No need to sound the alarm yet unless you truly suspect a learning disability.
  • While they won’t be sitting at a desk all day it is helpful to create a dedicated learning space with posters and maps to reinforce what they are learning (even if you put everything on a trifold science board instead of walls).
  • Attend a homeschool convention this year if you are able to, this is the best place to see a lot of curriculum in person, hear lectures from homeschool veterans, and hang out with like-minded parents on the same journey.

I have some fun and creative ways to keep science fun.

It’s important to adopt a philosophy for how you are going to teach science, not just at this age but throughout your homeschooling journey.

Your method changes of course as your children grow, but some foundational things should never change.

  • Check out science picture books at the library.
  • Check out your library to see if they loan out educational toys and things like microscopes. Our library back home had all kinds of neat things to rent.
  • Check out science videos/dvds/ at the library. They may be older but still good.

Science at this age is all about examining a tree, looking under a log, investigating a pond, start a birding journal, growing a bean, going on nature walks, going to the zoo, setting up an aquarium and instead of planting a whole garden, which sounded like too much energy when I was sleep deprived, we grew a few veggies in a pot on the back porch.

Science at this age doesn’t have to be complicated, it just has to consume their interests and stir their sense of wonder.

I have a fun felt anatomy activity which is major organs of the human body labeled. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

This activity makes your anatomy lessons reusable and self-correcting.

In total there are seventy-eight main organs within the human body.

While there are many organs that are important for the body to function well there are 5 major organs in the human body that are considered vital for survival.

About the Major Organs of the Body

They are the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, and liver. 

Skin is also a major (and the largest) organ that happens to be on the outside of your body.

Other important organs that you might include are the spleen, stomach, small and large intestines, bladder, and gallbladder.

The trachea is not considered an organ on its own, rather it is part of the breathing system, connected to the lungs.

You can incorporate as many or as few of these organs in your own felt body as you like.

Felt Anatomy Activity – Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled

The felt is sturdy and will hold up for a semester or years to come so that you can continue to add to it or use it in different ways.

I like that this is a self-correcting activity.

Your child can place everything where they think it goes and then check it against a diagram and correct anything that might need it. Much more fun than a boring old worksheet don’t you think?

Even if you do not consider yourself an artist or crafty you can make this or help your child make it! I am going to walk you through easy peasy steps.

You will need:

  • Tan felt
  • 6-8 additional felt colors
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock
  • Pen or marker

First, start by just drawing the top half of a stick figure using a pencil onto your tan felt.

I started with a really large piece of felt (12×18) for the body to make sure I had enough room for the organs.

And I cut mine so that the body was almost 15” long but you can make yours larger or smaller.

Once you are happy with your stick figure, you can fill the body out more, rounding out the head and making wider outlines for the arms, neck, and torso.

Don’t worry about any misdrawn lines, this is going to be the back.

Cut out the body.

Now find a diagram with the major organs or whatever body system you want to make and cut your organs out of different colors or shades of felt.

You just need to imitate the general outline.

I did not worry too much about proportions, depending on the age of your child and your skill level you may or may not want to require more precise dimensions.

You may estimate the sizes and then trim down each one to be sure it fits in the body you made.

Add additional organs beyond the major ones if you like.

Place your body outline on a large tray.

Have your child begin layering on the organs in the correct place using google or your favorite reference book.

Type up the names of each organ, or better yet have your child do it to practice typing, formatting, and to familiarize them with the names.

Cut out each one in a small strip to use for labeling.

Now they can begin adding labels to the correct spots.

Put everything into a ziplock baggie to keep and use at a later date.
