Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

While there are many organs that are important for the body to function well there are 5 major organs in the human body that are considered vital for survival.

About the Major Organs of the Body

They are the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, and liver.

Skin is also a major (and the largest) organ that happens to be on the outside of your body.

Other important organs that you might include are the spleen, stomach, small and large intestines, bladder, and gallbladder.

The trachea is not considered an organ on its own, rather it is part of the breathing system, connected to the lungs.

You can incorporate as many or as few of these organs in your own felt body as you like.

Next, look at some of these resources for learning about the human body.

Finally, look at this fun felt anatomy activity.

Felt Anatomy Activity – Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled

The felt is sturdy and will hold up for a semester or years to come so that you can continue to add to it or use it in different ways.

I like that this is a self-correcting activity.

Your child can place everything where they think it goes and then check it against a diagram and correct anything that might need it. Much more fun than a boring old worksheet don’t you think?

Even if you do not consider yourself an artist or crafty you can make this or help your child make it! I am going to walk you through easy peasy steps.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

You will need:

  • Tan felt
  • 6-8 additional felt colors
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock
  • Pen or marker
Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

First, start by just drawing the top half of a stick figure using a pencil onto your tan felt.

I started with a really large piece of felt (12×18) for the body to make sure I had enough room for the organs.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled

And I cut mine so that the body was almost 15” long but you can make yours larger or smaller.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Once you are happy with your stick figure, you can fill the body out more, rounding out the head and making wider outlines for the arms, neck, and torso.

Don’t worry about any misdrawn lines, this is going to be the back.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Cut out the body.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Now find a diagram with the major organs or whatever body system you want to make and cut your organs out of different colors or shades of felt.

You just need to imitate the general outline.

I did not worry too much about proportions, depending on the age of your child and your skill level you may or may not want to require more precise dimensions.

You may estimate the sizes and then trim down each one to be sure it fits in the body you made.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Add additional organs beyond the major ones if you like.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Place your body outline on a large tray.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Have your child begin layering on the organs in the correct place using google or your favorite reference book.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Type up the names of each organ, or better yet have your child do it to practice typing, formatting, and to familiarize them with the names.

Major Organs of The Human Body Labeled Fun Felt Anatomy Activity

Cut out each one in a small strip to use for labeling.

Now they can begin adding labels to the correct spots.

Put everything into a ziplock baggie to keep and use at a later date.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

I have a fun and easy digestive system craft activity for you to demonstrate how our stomach breaks down food. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

As is appropriate for the preschool and early elementary crowd, it’s a hands-on activity and of course a little gross – making for a very memorable lesson indeed.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

The stomach is just one part of the digestive system.

It is one that is easy to demonstrate for young learners and is what we will focus on for this craft/activity.

Let’s look at a simple breakdown of the digestive system.

Basic Steps in The Digestive System

Mouth – This is where your digestive system starts, your saliva helps break down your food as you chew, and then when you are ready to swallow it your tongue pushes the food down your throat and into your esophagus.

Esophagus – In the esophagus the small flap called the epiglottis closes over your windpipe so that you don’t choke on it. Contractions in the esophagus work to deliver food to your stomach.

Stomach – The stomach can stretch and hold up to 4 pounds of food at a time. Once food has reached your stomach it is mixed with enzymes until it is broken down enough to pass onto the small intestine.

Small Intestine – The small intestine is about 22 feet long and breaks down your food even more so your body can absorb all the vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats from it.

The nutrient-rich blood then goes to the liver to be processed and stored while the remainder of your food passes into the large intestine.

Large Intestines- The job of the large intestine is to absorb water and electrolytes, as well as forming and propelling feces to the very last stop. Drum roll please – your rectum.

Rectum – Yep, all that leftover food that isn’t used has to go somewhere, it hangs out here until you are ready to go to the bathroom and then it gets pushed out.

Finally, look at this fun and easy digestive system craft activity.

Digestive System Craft – The Stomach

Before you begin, you will obviously want to explain that this is just one part of your digestive system.

There are a couple of steps before and several steps after that help your food be processed by your body.

You Will Need:

  • Ziplock bag
  • Red permanent marker
  • Black permanent marker
  • ¼ cup of soda
  • Slice of bread
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Dishcloth or paper towel
Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Once you have gathered all your supplies you can remove the writing from your bag to make it completely see through.

Wet a towel with rubbing alcohol and rub it right off.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

You can use a book or google for reference and let your child draw a stomach on the bag in permanent marker.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Have them label the stomach, as well as the tube for the esophagus and small intestine coming out of each end of the stomach.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Tear up the bread into small pieces and set aside.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Pour in a small amount of your soda. This will act as the stomach acids.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Add the bread to the baggie.

You could also use crackers or cookies, just something soft that will break down easily with liquid.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Press out most of the air and seal the bag.

Now for the fun, demonstrate by squeezing the bag how the acids and muscles work to break the food down.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

You will see it won’t take long and it is completely broken down (obviously this takes longer during actual digestion).

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

You can stop here, and you have had a good quick lesson but if you want to add to it a little bit snip off one small corner.

Explain that while there is more to the digestive system than just what is shown on the bag this is what happens at the end when everything that was needed was taken out of the body by the digestive system.

Let them squeeze the waste into a bowl, because after all everybody poops!

Hold the straws close together and wrap the tape around them to form the trachea(windpipe).

Now they can label the trachea by writing it on the tape.

The lungs are ready to use. To demonstrate how lungs inflate and deflate your child will hold the straws in their mouth and inhale and exhale.

You will want to explain that the paper lungs are doing the opposite of what the lungs inside of them are doing as they are exhaling to fill them and inhaling to retract.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

I have 7 human body facts and a fun kids human body t-shirt project. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

When you are learning about organs and different systems a human body t-shirt project is a great way to help your child understand where everything is in relation to each other.

Make your shirt over time, layering on organs from the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems as you learn about each throughout your studies.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Too, you can design everything at once as a large project for your human body unit study.

What I really like about doing this on a shirt as opposed to a flat piece of paper is that it helps, especially young children, understand how each organ works together in each system and how they fit together inside the body.

It is also a very frugal project; you can grab a plain white tee from the craft store or even Walmart for around $.3.00.

And use craft paints you already have on hand for a craft/science activity that makes a lasting impact on them.

Hands-on Ideas for Kids about the Human Body

Next, add some of these resources to your human body unit study.

Human Body Facts

Here are some interesting facts about each of the major organs to go over while your child paints their shirt.

  • Trachea. The trachea is surrounded by c-shaped rings of hyaline cartilage that keep it from collapsing.
  • Esophagus It is a hollow, muscular tube that carries food and liquid from your throat to your stomach and it is made of muscles that push the food down.
  • Stomach. Stomach acid Is strong enough to burn your skin, this is why it burns when you have acid reflux. Your stomach is lined with mucus that protects it from the acid.
  • Lungs.Your left and right lungs aren’t exactly the same. The left lung is slightly smaller, allowing room for your heart. Your left lung is divided into two lobes and the right lung is divided into three.
  • Liver. The liver is one of the largest organs in the body. It is roughly the size of a football, weighing about 3 pounds in the average-sized person.
  • Gall Bladder. The Gallbladder stores bile and helps to digest fats but if your gallbladder is removed, it doesn’t affect your digestion that much.
  • Large Intestine. The function of the large intestine is to absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food and also to get rid of any waste product that is left over.
  • Small Intestine. If you pulled your intestines out straight they would measure about 22’ long but are only 1’ in diameter.
  • Heart. Your heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood a day and there are 20,000 miles of blood vessels running throughout your body.

The human body is truly weird and wonderful in design and is a favorite topic of study for preschool through high school.

How to Make a Human Body T-Shirt Project

You will need:

  • White t-shirt
  • Acrylic craft paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Paint markers/pens
  • Anatomy Reference photo
  • Cardboard
7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

First, slip cardboard inside the shirt to protect the backside from paint.

You can just flatten out a shipping box and cut it to size.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Smooth it out as much as you can.

Use a pencil to lightly sketch or mark out where each of your organs will be, you will be painting over it later.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Use a paper plate as a palette for all the colors you choose. Too, you can opt to paint each its actual color or choose one color to paint all organs for each of the systems.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Paint each of your organs, overlapping as needed. I find it is much easier to use a flat brush with an edge to get cleaner outlines.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Allow the paint to dry between colors to avoid smearing.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

When you are happy with your design allow everything to dry completely.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Now, you can go back in with a black paint pen and outline everything and add a little more detail if you wish. You can even label each organ if you like.

Finally, look how to make these cute fall felt leaf sachets.

Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers- Felt Leaf Sachet

You will need:

  • Felt- fall leaf colors
  • Embroidery floss
  • Large eye needle
  • scissors
  • Cotton stuffing
  • Essential oil
Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

You may wish to also purchase a thimble to help protect their little fingers.

First, cut your felt into smaller squares, slightly larger than the size of the leaf you would like your child to sew up.

You will need 2 pieces for each leaf. I have linked some precut squares above that are great for this.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Holding both pieces together, draw a leaf shape with a permanent marker or free hand, and cut out both leaf shapes at the same time so they are perfectly matched.

You can of course make these any size and shape.

Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

I recommend starting small, like no larger than 4”, and with a very basic oblong, or oval shape.

The more complicated shapes with lots of turns may frustrate those little beginning hands, save those for once they improve their basic stitches.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Thread a long piece of embroidery floss onto the needle and knot the ends together.

And double knot over the top of the first to make it larger so it won’t pull through the felt.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

You can choose thread that matches or contrasts, I love the contrast of thread against a different color felt.

Hold both leaf pieces together and show your child how to press the needle carefully through one side and out the other, pulling the thread all the way taut but not so tight that it gathers up the felt.

Have them continue around ¾ of the way.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Stuff with a little cotton filling.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Use a pencil to fill corners and any longer skinny sections.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Continue sewing the rest of the way around, knot the end close to the felt, and then cut off any excess threads.

Make Cute Felt Leaf Sachets For Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

Once finished you can scent it by adding a few drops of essential oils to the felt and refresh it as needed.

These felt fall leaf sachets are wonderful used for dramatic play or displayed around the house.

They can even be attached to some twine to create a lovely handmade swag for the mantle or bookshelf.
