Studying about Lewis and Clark has been one of the best ways to study American History. Begin with this mission statement by Thomas Jefferson below.
The object of your mission is to explore the Missouri river & such principal stream of it, as, by it’s course and communication with the waters of the Pacific Ocean…may offer the most direct & practicable water communication across this continent for the purpose of commerce.
Words by President Thomas Jefferson, June, 1803.

There is probably no more famous words for the explorers than those penned by President Thomas Jefferson.
This lapbook was made with letter size file folder that was turned landscape.
Lewis and Clark Homeschool Unit Study and Lapbook – {1804 to 1806}
Lapbook

Covers (Note: Also look down at coloring pages for front covers)
Also, add in this fun and quick project from Home School in the Woods, one of my favorite hands-on providers.
This study can have many topics and subtopics. You could easily replace any of these minibooks with the plants and animals fact books on the Westward Ho page.
The animals on the Westward Ho page are the same ones that Lewis and Clark “sketched” and wrote about.
Also, add in some nature projects for your unit study. Look at these Think Outside Boxes which instills a love of the outdoors in children and provide them with knowledge and skills to improve their confidence and appreciation of the natural world. (From their site.)
Flora and Fauna
When we covered Westward Ho as a co-op we covered more of the animals then that were “discovered” by the Corp of Discovery.
There were so many animals and plants we wanted to explore them with our co-op setting. So if you do this topic with a co-op, the animals and plants really lend themselves nice to a group setting.
If not, you can simply add a flap to this lapbook and add in the Louisiana Purchase on this page and the animals and plants on the Westward Ho page.
In addition, some of the girls in our co-op elevated Sacagawea to almost the “Leader” of the Corp of Discovery…LOL. So we added another matchbook minibook on Sacagawea that too can be substituted if they want to do research on her.

Too, this Lewis and Clark lapbook and unit study is a great time to add in so much life science whether it’s the flora or fauna. Look at these wonderful kits from Home Science Tools.
In addition, this is a fun time to start a rock collection to learn more earth science. This fun kit by Home Science Tools is a winner.
The Sierra Club does a beautiful job on Lewis and Clark. They have keeping it will, then and now, on the trail and the photos of the animals are just beautiful. In addition there is a 50 page pdf download that you could almost just use by itself as a study guide. Many of the facts on the animals from the Westward Ho lapbook came from this reference.

Lapbook, Notebooking Pages, and Coloring Pages
Below, look at the minibooks which come with this lapbook.
In addition, there are more minibooks than you need to fill one lapbook.
I include these in your lapbook so that if you want to study different subtopics you have a minibook.
Too, don’t forget we created this lapbook by turning the file folder landscape.
Now, here is a list of the pages which come with your purchase.
- 3 pages which can be used for the outside cover – the pages are created for landscape layout
- 5 coloring pages – which are created portrait. These can be used to include your younger children or use them for outside cover pages if you turn your file folder portrait instead of landscape.
- 4 minipockets and minibook with lines – 1 each for Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, Sacagawea, and The Enlisted Men.
- 4 minipockets and minibook with no lines – 1 each for Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, Sacagawea, and The Enlisted Men. This allows your child to draw or cut off the other side to use for memory, games, or add any other information. They are very flexible.
- Doctoring in the Wilderness minibook – Have your child learn the names of a few herbs.
- The Mission. Have your child describe what is the purpose of the mission or how it came about.
- How Long Was the Journey minibook with timeline
- What Did They Take minibook. Cut out pictures and talk about what they carried on the journey and why it was needed.
- Map of the Expedition. Locate the places on the map.
- Indian Country – Learn about the Native Americans Lewis and Clark encountered.
- Geography on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Write some brief points about geography.
- Botany Book 1 and Botany Book 2. Learn about some of the plants along the way.
