Homeschool Unit Study Human Body Hands-On Kids Stethoscope Activity

This next homeschool unit study human body will be a large one for us. Also I have this Human Body Crafts page for more fun ideas.

We won’t get lopsided with our unit study topics, which is so easy for us to do because of our love for history and geography.

I got excited about this next unit study though because with the older two boys they just wanted to read and health and move on.

Homeschool Unit Study Human Body Hands-On Kids Stethoscope Activity

Tiny is always up for as many hands-on activities as we can fit into the day and he doesn’t care if they are too young-ish or old-ish, he’s in.

Did I mention the kid is such a joy to teach?

We started off with an easy hands-on activity. And you know my standard is always minimal fuss with maximum fun when doing hands-on.

So we made an easy diy stethoscope.

We use to have a stethoscope when we were in the states, but not here. Besides, it was more fun to make it quickie quick.

Kids Fun Stethoscope Activity

The list is short and easy for what you need and if you’re like me, you already have these items in your house.

  • paper towel tube
  • funnel
  • masking tape
  • watch to count seconds

Place the paper towel tube on top of the funnel, the narrow end.

Wrap the tape around the tube for a DIY stethoscope @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Be sure to tape it down real good as you don’t want any air to escape or want any gaps.

Listen to the heart @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Then practice finding the heartbeat and count the beats within 15 seconds. Multiply that by four and that is the resting heart beat.

Mr. Awesome 2015 was sick that day, so he was actually a good candidate for Tiny.

Though Mr. Awesome did not feel like exercising, he walked up and back down the stairs one time to elevate his heart beat.

Tiny compared that to the resting heart beat. It was a fun and easy activity to kick off our next unit study.

We have several more fun hands-on activities we are doing for this unit study. You’ll love the homeschool lapbook.

Winter Homeschooling – Activities and Free Downloads. 5 Days of Look Alive. Day 1- Look to the Sea.

September 14, 2015 | 7 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

I actually like winter homeschooling, but I also like change. So when I need inspiration I look to the ocean or sea to inspire me. Did I tell you that I grew up close to the ocean?

I have fond memories of walking on the beach even when the weather was cold, collecting shells and afterwards grabbing a hot cup of southern gumbo. It brings calm to my day when I ponder about it.

Creating this series will allow me to share ideas I rounded up to give us a boost when we sag, while at the same time saving these links and ideas here on the blog for later.

I tend to get a lot of attitude pep in my step this time of the year.

One tip that has saved me several bucks over the years is to determine first if it’s the curriculum, winter homeschooling doldrums, my attitude or all of it when we feel like blah.

Before I make a change, I try new activities, preferably free and see if I can find my rhythm again. I find many times, it is wanting a change during winter homeschooling.

But, if you get the blahs during winter homeschooling, maybe you can use some of these links and get wild and savage.

Winter Homeschooling – From Humdrum to Humdinger. (well, okay, okay)

Too, be sure to download everything you like from these sites because links can change and even if you don’t use them until several years down the road, you will have them.

The sites I wanted to focus on today are Independence Seaport Museum. and Project Oceanography  and The Mariners’ Museum. All of these sites have multiple packets, free lesson plans or guides to download.

Hands-On Homeschooling

A lot of them with tons of wonderful pictures and printables. I took just a snippet of some of the printables from each site to share with you. Mark these, download and peruse them.

Independence Seaport Museum has teacher packets available for free from grades K – 12.

Download here K to 3 Teacher Packet.
Download here Grades 4 to 6 Teacher Packet.
Download here Grades 6 to 8 Teacher Packet.
Download here Grades 9 to 12 Teacher Packet.

Free Downloads from Independence Seaport Museum @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus
Free Downloads from Project Oceanography @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Also check out the free online resource How to Identify Sailing Ships on the site. A

wesome. You better take your time on this site too. Project Oceanography has about 14 Program Packets on the right side of the page.

Snippets of Free Downloads from the Mariners Museum @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Click on each packet and you will be kept happy sorting through links, lesson plans and downloads. A snippet from The Mariners’ Museum has quite a few projects that are hands-on and in pdf form. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the printable activities.

This is probably my favorite of the three sites because it has such a treasure trove of things that are easy and hands-on.

Ready for winter now.

Oh, wait, four more days of goodies to go. Here they are below!

Free Printable History Board Game American History Through the Life of Wyatt Earp

September 7, 2015 | 13 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

I have a free printable history board game. Also, look at Free American History Lapbook The Old West Through the Life of Wyatt Earp.

Instead of writing about so many events in American history, which can be boring if you are not focusing on some action packed event.

So, I created a free history board game when learning about events through the life of Wyatt Earp.

Free Printable History Board Game American History Through the Life of Wyatt Earp

Of course, when I can’t find exactly what I want, I make it for you and me.

Like I mentioned before in another post, Wyatt Earp has been the perfect American history character to focus on when I needed quite a few events to introduce to Tiny or at least make him aware of them.

Hands-on History

From The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper to The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe to music, from the American Civil War to the First World War, from art to the idea of Manifest Destiny, Earp’s life spanned so many key events in American History.

Playing American History Board Game @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

We have literally been overwhelmed with so many rabbit trails we wanted to take.

So just to be sure Tiny has a good introduction to a lot of them, I created the board game along with playing cards.

And as your child plays the game, they are introduced to some events on the board game and others on the playing cards.

If your child lands on the star, then take one of the playing cards, follow the instructions and return it to the deck. If he lands on a yellow space, just follow the instructions.

This is a fun way to introduce a wide range of things that Wyatt Earp would have probably learned about during his lifetime.

Though he has already graduated, Mr. Awesome is still sweet enough to play with Tiny.

Learning American History Game through the Life of Wyatt Earp @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Just don’t do like us. Tiny got so excited that they printed the game off on regular paper instead of card stock paper.

Free Printable History Board Game

Too, like my French Revolution free printable history board game, I made the game really big, BUT you can print it out on regular size paper or print it poster size (4 separate pages under your print settings). We printed it on 4 pages this time.

Here are some of the resources we used too in this unit study.

Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, The Cowboys Minibooks American History

September 6, 2015 | 5 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

Today, I have Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and The Cowboys minibooks to put on the lapbook that we are doing for the American history unit study through the life of Wyatt Earp. Also, look at Free American History Lapbook The Old West Through the Life of Wyatt Earp.

Since we are learning about the events surrounding the life of Wyatt Earp and Tiny wrote about the events at the O.K. Corral in another minibook, we chose to do a minibook to write about Wyatt Earp specifically.

Too, we added Doc Holliday.

Because of their friendship and also the gunfight was the result of cattle rustling by The Cowboys we added it too.

Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and The Cowboys free minibooks for an American History Unit Study @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

There is enough free information on the internet and the books that we have that this is an easy independent research project for Tiny.

So your child can write a few facts about the life of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday.

And then ask your child,”What was Wyatt Earp’s beef with The Cowboys?” (pun intended, corny I know but Tiny liked it)

American History through the Life of Wyatt Earp Free Lapbook

I am just about ready to start showing you too where we put the minibooks, but have a few more minibooks coming as we finish this unit study.

The minibooks today are for the right or left flap of your lapbook. Research, cut out, fold in half and glue to the right or left flap.
