How to Use the High School Planner Covers

For example, when you don’t buy a full put together student planner, your teen has choices for each section.

Individualizing a planner is not only something we love to do, but our teen too.

Some teens prefer to only include lesson planning pages.

Other teens include time management sections and tips, goals, or even journal pages.

By planning and printing exactly the pages you want your teen will be more motivated to use it.

Also, printing these high school planner covers do not really require any special printer.

I have used the Canon PIXMA TR150 Wireless Mobile Printer for years and love it.

It’s not the most expensive and doesn’t have tons of bells and whistles.

But I like to put together my planner slowly.

So I used an inexpensive printer and take my time.

Furthermore, look at some of these options that can make your teen’s homeschool planner unique.-

Add a two page month calendar. Not all teens plan everything on their phone. Some prefer to jot down appointments.

Too, teens may prefer to use their own lesson planning pages.

I have some unique ones which helps them to track time by 15 minutes increments.

In addition, add some growth mindset pages or pages to help plan for college or a career.

Even fun growth mindset coloring pages are a whimsical add if you have a creative teen who loves to color still.

Sometimes you need to just have a week at a glance for your homeschool planner.

Although daily planners have plenty of room to write, sometimes you just want to write loose plans for the week.

In addition, seeing the week at a glance has advantages because a page full of detailed lesson plans can feel overwhelming.

Today I’ve rounded up 35 best homeschool curriculum by learning style. Besides, homeschool learning styles is a continuing learning process as educators.

Especially when we try to sort out what are learning styles, we’re not sure what is really helpful.

Besides, when I chose curriculum I never thought about the homeschool approach or my child’s learning style.

However, I’ve learned homeschool curriculum is organized by homeschool approach.

So, the key to making a better choice for curriculum and not wasting time or money is to understand your child’s learning style.

This doesn’t mean that you’re coddling your children when you try to meet their learning style.

Quite the opposite, we appreciate differences and realize that not all kids learn in the same way.

Isn’t this why most of us are homeschoolers? We’re trying to meet the unique needs of our children.

Styles of Homeschooling

Too, understanding the inextricable link between homeschool learning style with homeschool approach equals success.

Sure, we’re not guaranteed of being successful in homeschooling, but we can increase the odds of success when we dive into understanding learning styles.

In addition, it’s important to know that your learning style by default usually becomes your teaching style.

Then, we inflict our teaching style on our child thinking it’s the best one because we learn through it.

Next thing you know we have no success with our child.

Worst yet some public-school educators and home educators believe the problem with learning is entirely the child’s problem.

As you can see, the more you understand and dig deeper into how each of your children learn, the more success you’ll have choosing curriculum wisely.

Homeschool Approaches

Instead of having all this floating around in your mind and trying to make it connected, look below at how I explain each one.

What is a homeschool approach?

A homeschool approach is the way you’re presenting information to your child. It is the way you’re teaching your children.

It can be formal, informal, through life skills, using curriculum, using a few pieces of curriculum, using no curriculum at all or a mix.

And whether you intentionally chose it or chose it by default, you’re still following a method.

And the homeschool world and educational word creates curriculum based on teaching approaches.

Too, there are many teaching approaches, but these five are the most popular in the homeschool world. Too, I tend to focus on these when helping homeschoolers.

Learning Styles Characteristics Matched to Homeschool Approach

Here are the top five homeschool styles and some of the characteristics of learning styles.

1. Unit Study Approach

Unit Study ApproachCharacteristics of Learning Style by Teacher or Student.
•Prefers a mastery approach
•Doesn’t always need detailed lesson plans
• Wants a research-based study on one topic
•Prefers to spend time on subjects which are of interest
•Will add in hands-on activities as needed and as many as needed or prefers to learn the whole topic through hands-on
•Will choose quality books or living books instead of using boring textbooks

2. Classical Approach

Classical ApproachCharacteristics of Learning Style by Teacher or Student.
• Wants a heavy emphasis on classics like ancient languages
• Thrives with a heavy language arts emphasis
• Pursues a chronological approach to learning history
• Wants to spend time learning Latin
• Focuses on learning from Great Minds of the past
• Should learn from ancient books and quality classical literature
• Education should focus on the history of Western Civilization

3. Textbook/Workbook Approach

Textbook/Workbook ApproachCharacteristics of Learning Style by Teacher or Student.
•This is the same approach used in public schools and the only approach most homeschoolers know.
• Instead of choosing an approach, some homeschoolers follow this one by default.
• Children who do well with drill and kill, love this approach.
• Parents and kids who don’t mind testing, deadlines, and don’t think textbooks are boring choose this.
• Families who want to mimic public school at home choose this.

4. Charlotte Mason Approach

Charlotte Mason ApproachCharacteristics of Learning Style by Teacher or Student.
• A gentle approach to language arts.
• There is emphasis on the arts, music, and nature.
• Learning should include forming lifelong habits
• More time should be spent outdoors.
• Literature based learning is one foundation.
• Poetry is important.

5. Unschooling Approach

Unschooling ApproachCharacteristics of Learning Style by Teacher or Student.
• Child led learning. This means if the child is moved to learn something he will.
• Unschoolers vary whether they will use curriculum or not. Some use very little, others use none.
• The fill their learning day with games, books, hands-on ideas, movies or any resource, place, person, or activity which fills their desire to learn whatever subject.
• The idea is that children will learn everything they need to know when they learn naturally and are not pushed.
•This approach recognizes that all kids are different and will learn at their pace meaning there are a variety of resources available.

Which approach do most of your choices in curriculum fall into?

Once you understand that, then you can see if it’s the right choices for your child.

Eventually you can teach your children through a variety of learning styles, but you set them up for success when a curriculum matches the homeschool approach.

Identifying Your Homeschooled Child’s Learning Personality

Your kids will be off to another Geronimo Stilton adventure when they read the next Geronimo Stilton books. The Journey Through Time #2: Back in Time will delight your kids who love to time travel.

Too, I have a hands-on history LEGO temple craft which will keep your learners engaged.

Add in my Meso-America Lapbook about Ancient Maya and you have a full history and literature unit study.

Besides being a special edition book, the time machine will take your kids to learn about ancient Rome in 45 BC, the Maya Empire 1005, and to the Palace of Versailles in 1682 CE.

You could just use this wonderful book for reference about those history topics. I always have a great history encyclopedia close too if we want to do further research.

Although the fun and adventurous Geronimo Stilton is on another adventure, this book can be used for historical fiction.

In addition, if you not heard about this fun series of books, here are some quick facts.

  • Geronimo Stilton is a fun loving and adventurous mouse who runs a newspaper. However, as he states his favorite activity is writing adventure stories.
  • The books are full of color pictures and crazy fonts. This may be distracting for some kids, but others love it.
  • Geronimo Stilton’s author is Elisabetta Dami who is an Italian author of children’s book. She also has a passion for archaeology and visiting historical places which she embeds in the books.
  • And the reading age is 7 to 10 years old.

And wow was this little book packed!

While it is a fun book with lots of great illustrations and font type, color, and size changes to keep it interesting for readers I love that it was so chock full of information.

Today, we focused on the Mayan civilization, but will come back to these other time periods in the book.

Back in Time, The Second Journey Through Time

Another tip, if you didn’t want your kids to read the entire book for the sake of time or because you have a reluctant reader is to focus on the middle section which is the Mayans.

Each story is distinctly broken up. You can have your children read the first part to find out how Geronimo travels.

Then skip to the Maya Civilization, saving the other parts for another unit study.

We incorporated history, art, science, reading, and more into this fun LEGO activity.

I was impressed by how much history is covered.

These are the things this section covers.

  • Maps of the Yucatan Peninsula
  • Tropical Rainforest
  • Mayan Fashion and Customs
  • Chichen Itza
  • The Legend of The Mayan Sun god
  • Pok-Ta-Pok

Geronimo Stilton Adventure The Journey Through Time #2: Back in Time (Mayan Craft)

We put together a simple LEGO build to share that will help keep your kids engaged while you teach them all about the Mayans.

Here are some simple instructions but encourage your child to use critical thinking to put it together as well.

Challenge them to make it bigger and use the whole baseplate!

Geronimo Stilton – Build a LEGO Temple of Kukulcan

You will need:

  • A large LEGO baseplate
  • A couple handfuls of LEGO- Cream, brown, or yellow

If you don’t already have a collection of LEGO, look at the large creative box.

LEGO is an amazing learning tool for all ages and this is a good basic set to start with.

Even your teen will still love learning with them and creating.

Start by creating a base that is 10×10 studs wide on your baseplate.

So that is the little studs that stick up on top of the LEGO.

You can do it with a combination of 1×2, 2×2’s, and 2×4 sized bricks. They don’t all need to be the same.

Place your next layer leaving a border of 1 stud showing all the way around on your base layer.

Continue the same way, leaving a 1 stud border around 4 more times until your top is just 1 or 2 2×2 bricks stacked.

Create steps by centering 1×2 bricks all the way up.

Your pyramid of Kukulkan is done!

To extend this lesson a little bit I also challenged the kids to create rainforest animals using LEGO.

We used this page on rainforest animals for inspiration!

This little add on activity gives your kids some science and art with their history lesson and its fun to see what they come up with.

When I do these simple hands on activities I like to let the kids work on them while I am either doing a read aloud or showing a short video on our subject.

They absorb information while their hands work believe it or not!

To round out a mini study you could also use the book to…

  • Create other famous structures from Chichen Itza
  • Have them make a salt dough map of the Yucatan Peninsula
  • Create a list of resources from the rainforests
  • Taste test some of those treats from the rainforest (a multi sensory approach works great and kids will never forget where those items come from)
  • Create ancient Mayan fashion from scrap fabric
  • Look up vocabulary words from the pages like-cacao, artisanal, obsidian, toxins, etc…
  • Create a Mayan hut with popsicle stick
  • Make Mayan Flatbread
  • Create a Maya Calendar
  • Recreate their own version of Pok-a-Tok

Sometimes you just need a homeschool science materials checklist to see what your missing in your science supplies. Also, look at my page Homeschool Planner for more free homeschool planner printables.

Besides, part of learning how to homeschool is doing all the fun hands-on science.

However, more than once, I have been caught short at the house with some of the supplies we needed in our home to complete the activities.

And even though we have used laid out science curriculum too, I have learned a lot through the years regarding how to stock my kitchen and home.

So, I have reduced some of the things we have used over and over, year after year and put them in this homeschool science materials checklist.

For example, we love doing science and have used 365 More Simple Science Experiments with Everyday Materials more than one time through the years because we love to pick activities which interests us.

In addition, we love books like Janice VanCleave’s Big Book of Science Experiments because you can easily obtain other materials not found at home.

Household Products for Science at Home

Now, depending on which area of science, like earth science, chemistry, physical science or life science, you will need to have a few exact materials for a branch of science you focus on.

For instance, we add specific things we need and use Homeschool Science Tools.

In addition, Homeschool Science Tools has just kits if you don’t want to use a full science curriuclum.

Look at their science kits here to see your options.

So this list is a list of general things you will want to stock your home with.

It’s kind of a given too that you will eventually want a microscope and slides, but I noticed year after year I have collected some of the same things in home.

Reducing materials I seem to use year after year into this checklist, I’m hoping to keep you organized.

And not do like us by having to put a fun activity on hold until we make a run to the store.

I hate when that happens.
