Atomidoodle Chemistry Game App

September 27, 2015 | 85 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

I am so thankful to Hero Factor Games so that my boys don’t have to depend on their mom’s science prowess or should I say lack of it when it comes to learning science and especially chemistry.

Atomidoodle Chemistry Game App

Wildly, I was waving my hands asking Hero Factor Games pick me, pick me to review their Atomidoodle app and I am so glad they did. We love this game app and Tiny just can’t put it down!

Let me back up first because you remember I shared with you my post about starting Chemistry this year with Tiny. And you know how important it is to me that subjects, even at the middle and high school level stay fun.

That is just what Atomidoodle does. What a treasure find for us.

Who knows maybe I won’t have to teach chemistry at all this year with this awesome app? (okay, okay).  Let me tell you how it works though.

Atomidoodle Chemistry Game App @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

I was given a free download of Atomidoodle and I was paid for my time. However, paid for my time does not mean paid off.  ALL opinions are my own and for sure I will always tell you what is on my mind. Your experience may vary. When I do accept a review it’s because I am excited to tell you about it. Read my full disclosure here.

How to Bring the Periodic Table of Elements to Life

Atomidoodle is a virtual chemistry notebook  that brings the period table of elements to life. By the way, this great learning tool is available for iPad and on Google Play for Android devices.

The key to bringing the periodic table of elements to life is in how the game is played. More on that in a minute.

Atomidoodle Chemistry Game App 1 @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

I want you to know first that this action packed game weaves logic, math and science skills together in a fast paced moving game.

  • Kids use fusion (addition of atoms) and fission (division) to understand how atoms work.
  • A player has to open and close widgets. For example, Helium is HE 2 and an atom is let out of the portal to move along the path. In this case the atom’s number was 4.
  • The player has to get the atom to the fission (division) widget to divide 4 and get 2 for proper atomic number.
  • Your child needs to keep the atoms moving along on the path because if they don’t atoms will explode.
Atomidoodle Chemistry Game App 2 @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus-1

The object of the game is to unlock all the elements on the notebook above. So cool!

Atomidoodle Chemistry Game App 3 @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus-1

For Tiny, it’s like unlocking little chests of information since our study of chemistry until now has been very basic. As a player unlocks the elements, he gets a Did You Know fact full of things that inquisitive minds want to know.

Did I mention the art work is truly beautiful? You notice the notebook looking paper type background along with all the doodles.

Tiny got frustrated with me because I deleted and reinstalled the app because the high stepping music wasn’t playing on our app. (Of course not having the volume turned up solved this problem.)

But Tiny said the levels get challenging as you go up.

So that is why it is hard to put a grade level on this because a child in elementary grade go start off on this and it increasingly gets challenging up to a high school level.

It really is an app that you can use with all of your children and for multiple ages. It is such a value for the price.

One important thing to me that is worth mentioning is that the owners are a husband and wife team that believe in using your powers for good.

In reading their vision, I was thrilled to know that they support, “Creative video games that support positive, moral, and biblical decision-making.”

Science is a logical study and the universe is full of the work of an orderly Designer. And I very much appreciate that a non creation view is not subtly sprinkled throughout the game.

Too, Tiny decided that you really needed to see how this fun app works, so he created a video.

Watch and enjoy!

Benefits of Learning Interactively

  • Children who run from boring worksheets will love the interactive way to learn the periodic table of elements.
  • A child who is gifted or wants a challenge will love Atomidoodle.
  • Elementary grade children who have a science bent will love being able to play.
  • High school kids (like me who ran from science in high school) will love the fact that with logic and some math, they too can learn chemistry the easy and fun way. They can learn to love the fascinating world of science through Atomidoodle.

I JUST love doing these reviews because I love it when my sponsors LOVE YOU and do giveaways.

Before we get this party started though, I just wanted to say a public Thank You to the awesome folks of Hero Factor Games for making such an awesome app to bless both science(y) and non-science(y) homeschooled kids. Thank You Tim and Sara!

Company Name: Hero Factor Games
Grades: From beginners to High School
Format: Available for iPad at iTunes for $2.99. Available for Android at Google Play for $2.99

Update 2022. I can’t find this app in the Apple store. I will keep trying, but it is available in the Google store.

Winter Homeschooling – Activities and Free Downloads. 5 Days of Look Alive. Day 3 – Look to Pokemon.

5 Days of Look Alive Winter Homeschooling. Day 3 Look to Pokemon. Free Downloads & Activities @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

If you missed any days, grab them below:

Day 1. Look to the Sea.

5 Days of Look Alive day 1

Day 2. Look to the Sky.

5 Days of Look Alive day 2

Moving on along through our series: Look Alive:Winter Homeschooling Ideas & Downloads, Day 3 is Look to Pokemon or Pokemon like cards, which boys and girls both will find fun.

I agree with this next resource which says that kids know more about Pokemon creatures than they do about real animals.

Take a lesson from what most kids like to do which is play cards and use it for real life learning. Phylo the Trading Card Game  did just that.

It has been a real treasure trove for my boys to say the least and it’s FREE.

5 Days of Look Alive day 3
Phylos 1

Phylo is a website that has free printable trading cards. Here is what it says from the site: an online initiative aimed at creating a Pokemon card type resource but with real creatures on display in full “artistic” wonder. It is a card game that makes use of the wonderful, complex and inspiring things that inform the notion of biodiversity.

Studying and learning science this way is a real keeper. The artwork is so beautiful and the cards are just plain fun.

Phylos 2
Phylos 3

The idea is to print off all you want to and then play a pokemon-like game. Even if you don’t want to print the rules and find out how they assign the game cards a point value, etc., you can still play a real simple matching game.

Phylos 4

The cards make EXCELLENT additions to your lapbook, unit studies or notebooking pages. There are several decks to choose from or like I mentioned you can print off exactly what you want. Click here to see the choices of the decks that you can download and be sure to grab them ALL!

PHylos 5

One of our favorite decks has the cards above in it from the Natural History Museum in London. One of the games suggested to play is about the ecosystem.

Look on the card for the common name, Latin name, food chain, diet and climate and then learn the facts.

Heads up too because you will want to pay attention if any of them teach evolution as there are many cards to go through.

Most of them I appreciate because they give a simple fact along with a point value assigned if you want to let your kids play together. They also give credit to the artist of the picture.

We have just enjoyed printing them off and learning about them.

Hands down this site has been our favorite so far if we had to choose one. Here are some quick links for you in one place.

Home Page

Decks found on this page.

Take a clue from Pokemon and let the cards do the teaching during winter homeschooling blues.

Life in Cuenca Ecuador a Year Later

Life in Cuenca Ecuador A Year Later @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Time has gone by too fast and life in Cuenca Ecuador a year later is still changing and exciting.

Too, it has been a while since I have shared some pictures with you about our everyday life in Cuenca, Ecuador, so I am excited to share some today.

I got a little behind in wanting to share with you because both my mom and the Mr.’s mom have been sick. So we spent about 6 weeks in the states to look after them.

We got back to Cuenca now and I wanted to share what we have been doing and a little bit of this and that as we go about everyday life.

Mr. Awesome 2015

I just had to show you this picture the professional photographer took of Mr. Awesome 2015.

The kids looks so grown that it makes me happy on one hand and want to cry on the other.

If you have a kid that graduated homeschool or even if you are starting out, you can imagine how proud we are of this sweet kid.

Too, here in Cuenca, there are many Gringos and wonderful photographers.

The one we got wanted to take one more professional looking photo of him. So he told us if we had a suit and tie for Mr. Awesome 2015 that he could take a photo of him with the city as the backdrop.

We love this photo and love the background of a typical beautiful spring day here.

Ecuadorean tamales @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Another thing we have embraced is a different way of eating every day. This is called a tamale here.

Now being from Texas and Mexican-American, I am familiar with delicious chicken and pork tamales back home in Texas.

The tamales here are more hardy and the picture above is what they call tamales here in Cuenca.

It is corn, but the corn is more fine ground, almost more like cornbread and crumbly.

You have to have a fork to eat it whereas the tamales I am use to back in Texas, you can pick up with your fingers and eat if you want to.

This tamale has chicken, green chili, raisins (yes) and boiled egg slices baked on top.

It is cooked in the banana leaves and served wrapped up in them.

It is quite filling, tasty and we have embraced the differences in definition of food here.

Band downtown Cuenca @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Also, there is always something going on in centro or downtown.

We hit a craft market going on in downtown and the local police were entertaining us with music as we shopped because I have absolutely fallen in love with the local handicrafts.

Handicraft 3 Cuenca Ecuador @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

That day I was looking to buy one of these miniature little scenes.

Handicraft 2 Cuenca Ecuador @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

These little pieces of village life are quite common and what we see everyday here in Cuenca.

That is guinea pig (cuy) above on the grill and that is a delicacy here in Cuenca.

Handicraft 1 Cuenca Ecuador @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

We bought a couple of the ones with cuy on them, but looking at the local handicrafts is always a favorite way to spend the rest of our day after school.

Tons of walking Cuenca Ecuador @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

I just had to show what we climb a lot of days because I don’t think gringos quite get how much walking is done here.

We haven’t had a car for a year and don’t miss it.

Sure, some days we wouldn’t mind traveling, then again bus and cab are very reasonably priced.

Buses cost only .25 cents and taxi rides are not normally more than about $1.60 or so in the city, if that.

We travel like most locals, which is by walking and public transportation.

But I had to show you this picture as Mr. Senior 2013 goes up from river level to downtown.

With the high altitude too, it’s a workout for sure each time we do.

Party Mr. Senior 2013 @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Then we have made plenty of gringo and Ecuadorean friends alike while here.

We had some friends come visit from the states and we ate in a favorite place when we have celebrations, which is El Mercado.

We had a good by dinner for Mr. Senior 2013 when he back to the states.

Mr. Senior 2013

It’s quite common here to start off in one place to celebrate, like we did here and then move to  an upscale restaurant like El Mercado for dinner.

This was our last picture together here in Ecuador before Mr. Senior 2013 moved back to the states.

I made it sure it was dark, so you couldn’t see my teary eyes. Love that kid.

I have three more posts coming about what to pack when coming to Ecuador, one about the variety of fruit here and how Ecuadoreans eat them and about the beautiful Cajas mountains.

Hope you enjoyed this quick glimpse about what we do, which is eat, school and take in the beautiful spring weather each day. Love it.

Hugs and love ya,

Tina Signature 2015c

Homeschool Unit Study Human Body Hands-On Kids Stethoscope Activity

This next homeschool unit study human body will be a large one for us. Also I have this Human Body Crafts page for more fun ideas.

We won’t get lopsided with our unit study topics, which is so easy for us to do because of our love for history and geography.

I got excited about this next unit study though because with the older two boys they just wanted to read and health and move on.

Homeschool Unit Study Human Body Hands-On Kids Stethoscope Activity

Tiny is always up for as many hands-on activities as we can fit into the day and he doesn’t care if they are too young-ish or old-ish, he’s in.

Did I mention the kid is such a joy to teach?

We started off with an easy hands-on activity. And you know my standard is always minimal fuss with maximum fun when doing hands-on.

So we made an easy diy stethoscope.

We use to have a stethoscope when we were in the states, but not here. Besides, it was more fun to make it quickie quick.

Kids Fun Stethoscope Activity

The list is short and easy for what you need and if you’re like me, you already have these items in your house.

  • paper towel tube
  • funnel
  • masking tape
  • watch to count seconds

Place the paper towel tube on top of the funnel, the narrow end.

Wrap the tape around the tube for a DIY stethoscope @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Be sure to tape it down real good as you don’t want any air to escape or want any gaps.

Listen to the heart @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Then practice finding the heartbeat and count the beats within 15 seconds. Multiply that by four and that is the resting heart beat.

Mr. Awesome 2015 was sick that day, so he was actually a good candidate for Tiny.

Though Mr. Awesome did not feel like exercising, he walked up and back down the stairs one time to elevate his heart beat.

Tiny compared that to the resting heart beat. It was a fun and easy activity to kick off our next unit study.

We have several more fun hands-on activities we are doing for this unit study. You’ll love the homeschool lapbook.
