The life cycle of a sand dollar is fascinating and we’re learning about them today. Too, look at my page Seashore Beach Watching Unit Study and Seashore Lapbook for more fun ideas

Too, we’re making a fun hydro dipped sand dollar. It makes for a cool craft to learn about our echinoderm.

And part of the echinoderm group besides sand dollars are sea urchins and starfish.

Fascinating Life Cycle Of A Sand Dollar & Hydro Dipped Craft

This is the awesome life story of a sand dollar—from a tiny egg to the beautiful shell you find in the sand.

Sand dollars have a flat, round shape and burrow into sandy seafloors.

So, I’m sharing facts of the sand dollar life cycle, some activities and then sharing a hands-on craft.

COOL ECHINODERMS BOOKS FOR KIDS

First, look at some of these books to use alongside your study.

I try to find living books when possible but we love reference books too.

11 Books About Fascinating Echinoderms Marine Animals

This group of animals sea stars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, brittle stars, star fish and crinoids. All of these are marine animals with radial symmetry in their body shapes.

What's in the Tide Pool?

What would you see if you sat at the edge of a tidepool, looked into the water and watched the changes taking place in this little world? What life would you discover there? In a charming hand-sized book, Anne Hunter illustrates the creatures that live in and around a tidepool, and describes each animal's characteristics and habits. The gorgeous artwork and simple sense of wonder will inspire children to explore their environment. Fans of Hunter’s two books, WHAT'S IN THE POND? and WHAT'S UNDER THE LOG? will want to add this new title to their collection.

Sand Dollars by the Seashore

Sand Dollars by the Seashore is a charming and educational poem for children about the wonders of the beach and the importance of respecting nature. It encourages young readers to explore the shoreline and discover its beauty while learning the difference between living sand dollars and cherishing their shell souvenirs as a special gift from the sea. Perfect for a day at the beach or a bedtime read, Sand Dollars by the Seashore is sure to delight and inspire young imaginations.

Sea Stars (Ocean Life Up Close: Blastoff Readers, Level 3)

Did you know that sea stars pump water instead of blood through their systems? Although commonly called starfish, these life forms are not fish! Instead, they are part of a group containing other animals like sea urchins and sand dollars. Sea stars are hardy animals that can grow new limbs and open clam shells. In this interesting title, students will enjoy learning more about these shining ocean stars!

Sea Urchins (Ocean Life Up Close)

Sea urchins look like fireworks exploding underwater. The spines that create their unusual appearance do have a purpose: they protect the tiny animals from dangerous predators. In this title, sea urchins of all shapes, sizes, and colors are on display for early readers!

The Burgess Seashore Book for Children (Dover Children's Classics)

Familiar burgess characters Danny Meadow Mouse, Jimmy Skunk, and Reddy Fox explore every nook and cranny of the shoreline and learn first hand about the habits and habitats of spider crabs, sea cucumbers, sand eels, and that strangest of little fishes — the sea horse.Veteran storyteller and nature lover Thornton W. Burgess provides fascinating information to young readers as he describes coastal areas along the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way he weaves the area's many life forms into
an entertaining tale that's also an illustrated guide to the seashore's natural history.

The Sand Dollar

While walking on the shore of the Sea of Cortez a man has a remarkable dialog with the sea. Using the naturally occurring dove like structures found in sand dollars, the sea relates its past wars with the sun, the wind, the mountains, and the moon and addresses its ongoing war with man. The sea's explanation of the need for the fifth dove is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression with readers of all ages.

The Big Book of the Blue (The Big Book Series)

Following the wild success of The Big Book of Bugs and The Big Book of Beasts, The Big Book of the Blue is the third installment in Yuval Zommer’s beloved series. Alongside everything the young oceanographer needs to know, Zommer’s charming illustrations bring to life some of the slipperiest, scaliest, strangest, and most monstrous underwater animals.

The book opens by explaining how different types of animals are able to breathe and survive underwater, and the different families to which they belong. Subsequent pages are dedicated to specific creatures, including sea turtles, whales, sharks, stingrays, and seahorses, and show varied life in specific habitats, such as a coral reef or deep sea bed. The Big Book of the Blue also explores the underwater world thematically, looking at animals in danger, learning how to spot creatures at the beach, and discovering how to do our part to save sea life. Beautiful and filled with fascinating facts, young, curious readers won’t be able to tear their eyes away from the page.

Oceanarium: Welcome to the Museum

This stunning new offering from the Welcome to the Museum series guides readers around the world's oceans, from sandy shorelines to the darkest depths. Learn about the ocean’s most fascinating animals, including giant whale sharks, tiny tropical fish, and majestic manatees, among many others. With expert text by marine biologist Loveday Trinick and stunning illustrations by Teagan White, travel the world from frozen Arctic seas to shimmering coral reefs, and learn why it is so important that we protect our oceans.

Ocean Anatomy: The Curious Parts & Pieces of the World under the Sea

Follow Rothman’s inquisitive mind and perceptive eye along shorelines, across the open ocean, and below the waves for an artistic exploration of the watery universe. Through her drawings, discover how the world’s oceans formed, why the sea is salty, and the forces behind oceanic phenomena such as rogue waves. Colorful anatomical profiles of sea creatures from crustacean to cetacean, surveys of seafaring vessels and lighthouses, and the impact of plastic and warming water temperatures are just part of this compendium of curiosities that will entertain and educate readers of all ages.

The Master of Tides

In the city of Tarian, where mastery over the tides is essential for the city’s very existence, an unforeseen and unthinkable thing has happened. The Master of Tides—Tarian’s guardian for over seven hundred years—has died, and the Sand Coin, the object that gives the Master his power, has vanished into the shadows.

With the Sand Coin missing and Tarian under threat from an impending cataclysmic event, Cora, a spirited orphan girl laboring in the city’s Water Works, embarks on a desperate quest to save her city.

Along with Will, her charming yet unwelcome companion, Cora discovers that to find the Sand Coin, she must join the magical Wandering Circus. But who in this mysterious and dangerous troupe of young performers can she trust? And how far will Cora have to travel with the circus in order to bring the Sand Coin home?

Starfish (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science)

Starfish have arms, but no legs. They have feet, but no toes. Starfish aren't fish, but they are living animals. In this Let's-Read-and-Find-Out classic, learn how starfish move, eat, and grow.

This is a clear and appealing science book for early elementary age kids, both at home and in the classroom. It's a Level 1 Let's-Read-and-Find-Out, which means the book explores introductory concepts perfect for children in the primary grades. The 100+ titles in this leading nonfiction series are:

Then, look at these fun facts about a sand dollar life cycle.

LIFE CYCLE OF A SAND DOLLAR FACTS

  • Living sand dollars are usually dark purple or black.
  • The life cycle begins with external fertilization.
  • Male and female sand dollars release sperm and eggs into the water.
  • Currents must carry the gametes together where fertilization occurs in the water.
  • Once fertilized, the egg develops into a free-swimming larva.
  • The larva is called a pluteus and it drifts in the water feeding on plankton.
  • After several weeks of growing, the sand dollar larva goes through metamorphosis.
  • It changes shape completely and sinks to the ocean floor.
  • Often it burrows just beneath the surface.
  • It starts to develop a flattened body and covering of tiny spines.
  • Adult sand dollars are fully developed, measuring up to 3–4 inches in diameter.
  • They live in sandy or muddy ocean bottoms, feeding by filtering particles from the water or sand.
  • Sand dollars can live up to a decade.
  • When a sand dollar dies, its spines fall off, leaving behind the white skeleton—called a test that we find along the beach.
Fascinating Life Cycle Of A Sand Dollar & Hydro Dipped Craft

When you find your next sand dollar remember it is the remains of a creature with a complex life story.

Finally, look at this cool hydro dipped sand dollar craft.

HOW TO MAKE A HYDRO DIPPED SAND DOLLAR

We wanted to make it look like it would if it was alive and since they have a dark purple-ish color, we chose to use this color.

Too, we used a fun technique called hydro dip. I’ll show how easy it is. Such a complicated word for something to dunk in water.

    A Weekend With Renoir

I have put on my little round hat (which I wear often, in fact), combed my white beard and put on my best navy-blue suit. I am wearing my favorite necktie, too. Surely, you can see at once that I am a painter. I am so pleased that you have come to spend the weekend with me, to hear me talk about myself and my friends-- they are painters also. What I am about to tell you is my own true story-- the story of my life and my work. You will have to step back with me into the past-- before you were born, yes, but not so very long ago.Let me introduce myself to you. My name is Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

    Weekend with Van Gogh

The nineteenth-century Dutch artist discusses his life and work in a letter to his nephew.

A Weekend with Leonardo Da Vinci

The fifteenth century artist talks about his life and work as if entertaining the reader for a weekend.

    Drawing from Nature

Artist and naturalist Arnosky explains his techniques, and shares his enthusiasm, for drawing natural scenes and animals.

    Linnea in Monet's Garden

Linnea has been in Paris. And she has visited the painter Claude Monet's garden! She even stood on the same little Japanese bridge that Monet painted so often in his pictures. In Paris, Linnea got to see many of the real paintings.

Now she can understand what it means to be called an Impressionist, and she knows a lot about Monet's life in the pink house where he lived with his eight children.

Twenty-five years after its original publication, this celebration of the wonder of art is available once again in an enlarged keepsake edition. The joy and inspiration Linnea discovers in Monet's garden will be eagerly embraced by a new generation
    of readers.

The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky's Abstract Art

Vasya Kandinsky was a proper little boy: he studied math and history, he practiced the piano, he sat up straight and was perfectly polite. And when his family sent him to art classes, they expected him to paint pretty houses and flowers—like a proper artist.   But as Vasya opened his paint box and began mixing the reds, the yellows, the blues, he heard a strange sound—the swirling colors trilled like an orchestra tuning up for a symphony! And as he grew older, he continued to hear brilliant colors singing and see vibrant sounds dancing. But was Vasya brave enough to put aside his proper still lifes and portraits and paint . . . music?   In this exuberant celebration of creativity, Barb Rosenstock and Mary GrandPré tell the fascinating story of Vasily Kandinsky, one of the very first painters of abstract art. Throughout his life, Kandinsky experienced colors as sounds, and sounds as colors—and bold, groundbreaking works burst forth from his noisy paint box.

Famous Paintings: An Introduction to Art for Young People

Come Look With Me: Animals in Art

Few subjects have more immediate appeal to children than animals, and few methods of teaching students to appreciate fine art have proven more successful than those of educator Gladys S. Blizzard. In COME LOOK WITH ME: ANIMALS IN ART, she makes the most of children's natural curiosity about animals to introduce them not only to twelve magnificent
works of art, but also to a whole new way of encountering art. Using an approach which is as fun as it is effective, the author deftly guides her young audience toward their own understanding of and delight in the world of art. The works featured in ANIMALS IN ART represent a variety of styles which students will encounter again in museums and in books: the muscular realism of Rosa Bonheur's "The Horse Fair", the delicate romanticism of Martin Johnson Heade's "Cattleya Orchid" and "Three
Brazilian Hummingbirds," the bold abstraction of Henri Matisse's "The Snail." They also represent an intriguing menagerie of beasts, from the mysterious deer and horses stampeding across the wall of Lascaux cave to Paul Klee's whimsical heart-nosed cat dreaming of a bird.

Exploring Landscape Art with Children (Come Look With Me)

In COME LOOK WITH ME: EXPLORING LANDSCAPE ART WITH CHILDREN art educator Gladys S. Blizzard introduces boys and girls to 12 magnificent landscape paintings. Through these carefully selected works and a thought-provoking text, the author guides students toward an imaginative new way of looking at art. This book is suited both for family reading and for sharing with a small group. Each full-color reproduction is accompanied by a brief biological sketch of the artist and a series of open-ended questions designed to make the most of a child's natural curiosity.

Now before I give you my simple how-to on creating art with beach glass let’s look at a lesson on the 7 elements of art and discover which ones apply to today’s lesson.

When you begin more formal art lessons you should start with the 7 elements of art and keep it simple, as your child matures you can go more in-depth into each one.

    THE 7 ELEMENTS OF ART

    1. Line- A mark made on a surface. Examples: Thick, thin, wavy, straight, dashed lines. Think about drawing hair (lots of lines) or a fence (straight lines).

    2. Shape- An enclosed space that is flat. Examples: Circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, ovals. Look for these in a painting of houses or when drawing robots.

    3. Form- A three-dimensional object that has height, width, and depth. Examples: Cubes, spheres, cylinders, pyramids. Think of a ball (sphere) or a can (cylinder).

    4. Color- The visual quality of objects caused by the amount of light they reflect or absorb. Examples: Red, blue, and yellow (primary colors); green, orange, and purple (secondary colors).

    5. Value- The lightness or darkness of a color. Examples: Dark blue vs. light blue, black vs. white, shades of gray. Think about shadows that make things darker.

    6. Texture- How something feels or looks like it feels. Examples: Rough, smooth, bumpy, furry. Imagine touching sandpaper (rough) or a smooth glass ball.

    7. Space- The area around, within, or between objects.Examples: Positive space (the objects themselves) and negative space (the empty areas around the objects). Think about how much space the objects take up in a picture, and the space between them.

I have a free printable shoebox water cycle diorama. Also, look at my page Free Earth Science Lapbook & Unit Study Ideas for more activities.

A water cycle diorama is a fun visual way for kids to learn the four main stages of the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.

Besides, explaining abstract concepts like the water cycle can be hard for kids to grasp.

So, a shoebox water cycle diorama is a visual way to introduce weather concepts.

Too, kids can use all of the free printable pieces of this water cycle diorama download or create some features of their own to mix and match with the printables.

Also, engage your child while he is preparing the diorama. You can prepare questions to engage critical thinking.

For example, where does the water start, what happens to the rain, and where does the groundwater go.

In addition, look at some of these books about the water cycle.

Add some of these living books and reference books to your learning day about water and the water cycle.

    A Drop of Water

A child crouches beside a meadow brook, and a drop of water collects and falls from the child’s fingertip to continue on its journey. Where does that journey begin? High in the sky, rain clouds are parting. Water trickles and flows down the mountain, collecting in an upland bog, seeping through a beaver’s dam, rushing over rocks, passing many plants and animals along its winding way—each dependent on water and the different environments it shapes to live.

A Drop of Water: A Book of Science and Wonder

The most spectacular photographs ever created on the subject of water appear in this unique science book by Walter Wick. The camera stops the action and magnifies it so that all the amazing states of water can be observed — water as ice, rainbow, steam, frost, dew. Readers can examine a drop of water as it falls from a faucet, see a drop of water as it splashes on a hard surface, count the points of an actual snowflake, and contemplate how drops of water form clouds. Evaporation, condensation, capillary, attraction, and surface tension are explained through simple text and illustrated by pictures that reveal water in its many awesome transformations.

The Snowflake : A Water Cycle Story

With a double-page spread for each month, this book describes the journey of a single drop of water throughout the year.

Drop: An Adventure through the Water Cycle

Meet Drop. She's water! And she's seen a thing or two--even dinosaurs. Everywhere Drop flows--and she flows everywhere--she makes life on Earth possible, and has a great time doing it. Have you ever plummeted from a rain cloud? Or taken a thousand-year nap in a glacier? Drop has! She'll tell you all about it
