I have a fun hand straw model craft to explore human anatomy muscles, bones, and tendons. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

Because it is so important in the basic sciences kids learn from preschool to high school, hands-on human anatomy is a no brainer.

Let’s explore human anatomy muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones with some fun hands-on activities.

The reason I like this activity is because it’s very inexpensive or free if you have these items on hand.

Craft a Fun Hand Straw Model to Explore Human Anatomy Muscles & Tendons

Also, it gives kids a peek into the inner workings of their body, and has a lot of impact in helping kids to understand the mechanics of the hand.

Muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones make up the human musculoskeletal system.

Human Body Muscles, Ligaments, Tendons and Bones

Let’s look at each.

  • Muscle- Soft tissue, muscles help you move, lift or even sit still. Some muscles aid in digesting food, breathing or sight. The heart is a muscle that pumps blood throughout your body.

You have 3 types of muscle in your body:

  • Skeletal muscle- attached to the skeleton, 700 of these muscles spread throughout the body.
  • Smooth muscle- found in blood vessels and organs in the abdomen.
  • Cardiac muscle-The thick middle layer of the heart.
  • Tendon-A tendon is not the same thing as a muscle. Tendons are strong cords of flexible tissue (made of collagen) that connect your muscles to your bones. You can easily feel one of your tendons, run your hand down the back of your ankle and feel the cord that runs down it.
  • Ligament- This is a fibrous connective tissue that attaches bone to bone and helps hold bones together and keeps them stable.
  • Bones-Bone is made of protein, collagen, and minerals, especially calcium. Your bones provide shape to your body, allow for movement, protect vital organs, facilitate breathing, and a variety of cells are made in the marrow that are absolutely necessary.
  • Cartilage- Is the strong, flexible connective tissue that protects your joints and bones. Think of it as a shock absorber.
  • Connective Tissue- Connective tissue is the tissue that connects or separates and supports all the other types of tissues in the body.

Then, cut the hand out.

Craft a Fun Hand Straw Model to Explore Human Anatomy Muscles & Tendons

Next, cut straws into 14 short pieces, 3 for each finger and only 2 for the thumb.

Cut 5 longer pieces, almost as long as the palm of your handprint.

Craft a Fun Hand Straw Model to Explore Human Anatomy Muscles & Tendons

Tape 3 bones (phalanges) onto each finger, leaving room between each and 2 on the thumb.

Craft a Fun Hand Straw Model to Explore Human Anatomy Muscles & Tendons

Use tape to place the 5 longer straw pieces on the palm(metacarpal bones), and try to line them up with each finger so that the motion is smoother.

Craft a Fun Hand Straw Model to Explore Human Anatomy Muscles & Tendons

Cut 5 lengths of yarn or string 6 inches longer than your traced hand.

Tape one line of thread to the backside of each finger.

Craft a Fun Hand Straw Model to Explore Human Anatomy Muscles & Tendons

Use a skewer to push the string through the straws of the finger and then through the straws on the palm and out the bottom.

Craft a Fun Hand Straw Model to Explore Human Anatomy Muscles & Tendons

Smooth strings out so each is easy to identify which it controls. Trim if needed.

Craft a Fun Hand Straw Model to Explore Human Anatomy Muscles & Tendons

Your child can now gently pull on each string to demonstrate how when the hand receives electromagnetic impulses from the brain the tendons and muscles work together to do what it tells them to.

To stabilize the hand further you can hot glue the back of it down onto cardboard and have your child see how they are able to move the hand.

Finally, look at this amazing air dry clay hands-on heart model.

How to Make an Air-Dry Clay Hands-on Heart Model

I found this A Guide to Understand Human Heart with Heart Diagram here.

It is a good clear simple image of the heart. There is also a lot of great information here that can be used for your study as well.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

You will need:

  • Air Dry Clay
  • Blue Gel Food Coloring
  • Red Gel Food Coloring
  • Rubber gloves
  • Heart diagram
How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

First, pinch off a good-sized piece of air-dry clay.

Hands-on Heart Model

I used about ¾ of a pound. Work it with your hands for a few minutes to soften it and make it easier to mold.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

Then, roll into two equal pieces, about the size of tennis balls is where I ended up.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

Unless you don’t mind dyed hands for a few days I highly suggest you put on gloves before you begin the next step.

Add blue gel food coloring to one side and massage it in.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

Take the next half and work in red gel food coloring.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

Mold each piece into a cylinder-ish shape.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

Pinch off a chunk of each and roll it into the various arteries, aortas, and valves that come off the right and left sides of the heart.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

Take off more as you need to have all the main vena cava, inferior vena cava, pulmonary valve, artery, and vein, right and left ventricles, etc.

Use a craft stick to cut the valves off as if you were looking at a cross section.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

Form your main left and right sides of the heart a bit more and press them together.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

Add arteries and valves, etc. to the heart, gently smooth the clay together so that it sticks.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

Be sure that each section is securely attached.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

As we worked on the clay more and more the color became lighter and lighter, so we brushed on some gel coloring to deepen the color.

Use a paintbrush handle or pencil to gently indent where the right and left atrium would be.

How to Make a Human DIY Heart Model Easy Craft for Kids

Allow the heart to dry completely, it will probably take several days, flip it over every day so it can dry evenly.

You can also press it a little flatter while you are forming each part if you like for a quicker drying time.

Once the heart is dry and hardened you can then use it to have your child create labels for each area and place them in the correct spot.

The Respiratory System Lung Craft For Kids

8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

You will need:

  • 2 brown paper bags
  • 2 straws
  • tape
  • Black marker
  • Red marker
8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

Start by having your child use a black marker to draw the bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli on each paper bag.

It doesn’t have to be perfect, you just want them to cover each of the different parts of the lung.

8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

Next, have them use a red marker to label each of these parts as well as the right and left lung to reinforce what they are learning.

8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

Slip a straw several inches down into one bag, bunch it closed, and tape it closed tightly around the straw. You want to be sure it is sealed so the air doesn’t leak out.

8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

Repeat on the other side.

Hold the straws close together and wrap the tape around them to form the trachea(windpipe).

Now they can label the trachea by writing it on the tape.

8 Facts About the Respiratory System & Fun Lung Craft for Kids

The lungs are ready to use. To demonstrate how lungs inflate and deflate your child will hold the straws in their mouth and inhale and exhale.

You will want to explain that the paper lungs are doing the opposite of what the lungs inside of them are doing as they are exhaling to fill them and inhaling to retract.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

I have 7 human body facts and a fun kids human body t-shirt project. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

When you are learning about organs and different systems a human body t-shirt project is a great way to help your child understand where everything is in relation to each other.

Make your shirt over time, layering on organs from the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems as you learn about each throughout your studies.

7 Human Body Facts and Kids Human Body T-Shirt Project

Too, you can design everything at once as a large project for your human body unit study.

What I really like about doing this on a shirt as opposed to a flat piece of paper is that it helps, especially young children, understand how each organ works together in each system and how they fit together inside the body.

It is also a very frugal project; you can grab a plain white tee from the craft store or even Walmart for around $.3.00.

And use craft paints you already have on hand for a craft/science activity that makes a lasting impact on them.

Hands-on Ideas for Kids about the Human Body

Next, add some of these resources to your human body unit study.

16 Human Body Books & Hands-on Resources

Add a few of these fun resources whether you do a couple of lesson plans about the human body or a unit study.

Human Body Facts

Here are some interesting facts about each of the major organs to go over while your child paints their shirt.

  • Trachea. The trachea is surrounded by c-shaped rings of hyaline cartilage that keep it from collapsing.
  • Esophagus It is a hollow, muscular tube that carries food and liquid from your throat to your stomach and it is made of muscles that push the food down.
  • Stomach. Stomach acid Is strong enough to burn your skin, this is why it burns when you have acid reflux. Your stomach is lined with mucus that protects it from the acid.
  • Lungs.Your left and right lungs aren’t exactly the same. The left lung is slightly smaller, allowing room for your heart. Your left lung is divided into two lobes and the right lung is divided into three.
  • Liver. The liver is one of the largest organs in the body. It is roughly the size of a football, weighing about 3 pounds in the average-sized person.
  • Gall Bladder. The Gallbladder stores bile and helps to digest fats but if your gallbladder is removed, it doesn’t affect your digestion that much.
  • Large Intestine. The function of the large intestine is to absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food and also to get rid of any waste product that is left over.
  • Small Intestine. If you pulled your intestines out straight they would measure about 22’ long but are only 1’ in diameter.
  • Heart. Your heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood a day and there are 20,000 miles of blood vessels running throughout your body.

.A chalk pastel bird nest easy drawing project gives your child some creative freedom in recreating some of the most common types of bird nests as they learn about them.

While they are a bit messy, they are wonderful for creating soft and hard lines as well as blurring, they are very forgiving.

How to Make a Chalk Pastel Bird Nest Easy Drawing

They can be made from natural materials like sticks, twigs, hay, grass, and leaves but they will also use scraps of string, cloth, paper, and plastic bits that humans leave out.

There are many different types of nests but most fit into 1 of 5 categories -cupped (or half-cupped), cavity, pendant, scrape, and burrow and these are the ones we are going to explore here.

Types of Bird Nests

  • Cup- a cup-style nest is the most seen, it is a cup-shaped build that offers eggs some protection and still allows momma bird to sit on her eggs. They are usually built on the fork of tree branches but will also be built on the ground, in bushes, and even in porches and barns. Tiniest cup nest belongs to the hummingbird at about 1”.
  • Cavity- Just as the name implies this Nest is made inside the cavity of trees, bird’s houses, and in the cavities of building structures such as chimneys. There are roughly 85 different bird species that use this method like woodpeckers, wood ducks, and owls. Some birds create their own cavity while others use already-formed openings.
  • Pendant/Suspended cup- This type of nest resembles a hanging sack. It can either have a cuplike structure or a tunnel shape with openings throughout.  Weavers, Orioles, Sunbirds, Swallows, and Martins are the most common tenants of this style.
  • Scrape/Ground- Killdeer, Ostrich, and the arctic Tern as well as a few other birds find that making their nest by using or making hollow depressions in the ground.  They use little or no nesting materials, commonly it would be down feathers, grass, and weeds.
  • Burrow- Some birds use a burrow for a nest like the puffin, kingfishers, kiwi, and the burrowing owl. They prefer it for maintaining an even temperature as well as protection from predators and weather. They often use a hole that was dug and abandoned by other animal species.

No Nest –Emperor and King penguins do not make nests at all, rather they hold the egg on top of their feet.
