    You want to create the perfect kindergarten homeschool set up. Also, grab my other tips, ideas, and crafts for kindergarten on my page Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum.

    Then figure out your child’s learning style and pick your curriculum, or at least the style of learning you are going to begin following.

    You may have a dedicated homeschool room or you may just enjoy school together snuggled up on the couch.

    How to Create the Perfect Kindergarten Homeschool Set Up

    Either way you will want to create a setup that works well for you.

    I can guarantee a few things.

    You will probably change curriculum at least a handful of times before you are done.

    Next, your needs as a homeschool family will change over the years.

    What works now may not work next year, or even later this year and that’s okay.

    I am going to give you some tips to help keep it flexible.

    So that whatever you choose for a set up will always fit into your homeschool life with a little adjustment here and there.

    4 Ways to Begin Your Kindergarten Homeschool Set Up

    Do you have an empty extra room already to be a blank canvas as your learning area?

    Will you be starting on the couch then moving to a table for penmanship and crafts?

     Get an idea of where you will have your homeschool base so you can set it up properly.

    There are benefits for a dedicated room despite what some homeschooler tout.

    For example, it helps you and your child to focus with less distraction.

    Also, it sets the mood for learning, and gives you a defined place to display posters, your child’s artwork, and more.

    At the end of the day, you can close the door and keep the school supplies contained to one room.

    The drawback to a room is that learning shouldn’t be stifled and takes place everywhere and all day long.

    Crayons and paper scattered on the coffee table might inspire your little Picasso to create art.

    A stack of animal books on the kitchen table along with some plastic creatures will invite a curious child to create a diorama.

    Or add some popsicle sticks and playdough in to make enclosures for each animal.

    How to Create the Perfect Kindergarten Homeschool Set Up

    You will probably find that somewhere in the middle works best, but it is up to you and your family.

    You may need just a bookshelf in a corner and a basket in the living room.

    1. Choose Your Kindergarten Furniture Wisely

    Smaller children need smaller furniture.

    While they can sit at a big family table for meals you will find that younger kids have a much easier time sitting at a table or desk that is scaled just for them.

    To master fine motor skills such as handwriting they really need to be able to use the correct posture.

    Search for something that is great for multipurpose uses to get the best bang for your buck like a little table and chair setup.

    This is wonderful for writing but also painting, playing with playdough, sorting math manipulatives, and even enjoying a snack.

    A good sturdy bookshelf is a must have as well no matter where you find a home for it.

    It could be beside your recliner or in a dedicated school space.

    You want a home for the majority of your materials to keep them organized and ready to go.

    2. Gather up all your mom/teacher materials

    Start with your own supplies for planning, even if you are doing a very relaxed homeschool a planner can help keep you organized and also serves as part of your homeschool record.

    3. Collect your child’s books, supplies, and games

    Gather up some basic school supplies like pencils, paper, crayons, markers, a couple types of paper scissors, and glue.

    You can add as you go but these are a good place to start.

    You want to choose things that can be used in multiple ways and for more than just one year. Here are just a few of my favorites.

    How to Create the Perfect Kindergarten Homeschool Set Up
    • Magnetic tiles can be used to make letters and numbers, create roads, to teach shapes, they can be measured, weighed, and as a part of all important make believe play.
    • Letters/Numbers will be used for years to learn not only letters but eventually they can be used as spelling word practice.
    • Dry erase, chalkboards, or LCD tablets are wonderful for beginning writing practice, doing simple math problems, and so much more.
    • Add in a few neat games. Playing board games may seem like all fun but they teach your child how to follow directions, develop critical thinking skills, improve attention span, learn cooperation, and how to be a good winner/loser.

    There is much more than this I could recommend.

    These are just a few basics beyond crayons and paper that will round out your child’s kindergarten education.

    4. Create a Simple Storage System

    To contain your daily materials, you can use a large basket or a bookshelf,

    One thing that I really like to utilize throughout all levels of homeschooling- a tiered cart that can be rolled from the kitchen table to the couch, because you will find out that homeschooling takes place everywhere.

    A 3-tier cart is a great option because it gives you a place to keep your materials and books, a shelf for their curriculum and supplies, and a section for fun games, puzzles, and manipulatives to use throughout the day.

    The top level is a good place to keep your planner, teacher manuals, books, and special items for yourself.

    Utilize your local library, thrift store, and yard sales to build an amazing library full of living books, picture books, and chapter books for read alouds.

    Also, it’s not necessary to be concerned about educationalese so learning about homeschool learning styles should be painless.

    It’s not necessary to understand all the jargon of learning styles like I tried to do.

    Too, I want you to know why it’s important to understand this brief introduction to homeschool learning styles prior to choosing curriculum.

    Additionally, I want you to understand these 3 things.

    • you need to understand your child’s weaknesses and strengths.
    • that you should tailor curriculum to meet your child’s learning personality and
    • the more you educate yourself and your child the better you’re equipped to meet his needs.

    Introduction to Learning Styles

    First, it’s important to success as homeschool educators to understand our children and ourselves.

    For example, as parents we know from the time our children are born, they have a definite personality.

    In addition, we have pre-set ideas of how to raise them.

    However, their personality and our ideas of how to homeschool can collide.

    So, you need to understand your child’s weakness and strengths so you can best know how to homeschool him.

    Better yet you want your child to excel in life as well.

    What is a Learning Style

    Although some scientific studies want to complicate the simple, here is my simple definition.

    A learning style is the way a person prefers to learn. It goes beyond visual, kinesthetic, and auditory. It involves the way a person feels, senses, and thinks about certain topics. Also, it is a preferred way to interact with new information and it involves their personality. And to accept the differences in people and understand there is no reason to change a person because differences are a good thing.

    The reason so many educators can be overwhelmed is that they try to make it science to understand how the brain works.

    While it’s true that studying the brain is vital and it is science, it’s equally important to know that we will never know all that affects our brain, emotions, and personality.

    Key to moving forward in teaching children is accepting their personality and understanding that they we should not try to change them.

    We only see what children can do and how they interact and will never be able to know everything about the brain.

    True, we want to nurture them and pass on what we know.

    However, that is much different than changing something about somebody that we have no control over. If a child is born with black hair, then it’s black.

    As absurd as it is, we don’t insist we have a child who is blonde headed even if he or she dyed their hair.

    We’re born with certain traits which can’t be changed no matter how much we may hide them.

    Why should we tailor our curriculum to meet our child’s needs?

    Next, another point to know is that tailor curriculum to a child’s learning style is not coddling them.

    Just as you have a preferred teaching style your child has a preferred way to learn.

    Each of your children began to walk and talk at different times, not the exact same day.

    So, when our curriculum is varied it means we accept and recognize differences.

    And you recognize that just because one math program works for one child it doesn’t mean it will for the next child.

    Again, this is because there are differences in our learning personality that need to be recognized.

    When a child loses self-confidence or thinks he is weird because he doesn’t comprehend our teaching method then the curriculum is counterproductive.

    We simply cannot expect each of our children to be the same and this is because they each have different learning personalities.

    Understanding you and your child’s personality differences and how it affects learning styles in homeschooling is valuable.

    While choosing homeschool curriculum, thinking about my children’s learning personality was not tops on my list. That was a mistake.

    Today, I’m sharing a few quick tips in how to combine your child’s learning personality and homeschool learning style.

    Knowing how your child learns best helps you reduce stress and struggling.

    However, before I go further, I want to give you a heads up about learning styles.

    There is no way science can fully understand how the magnificent brain takes in information.

    But getting a general understanding of why your child may struggle in one subject and excel in another will help you reduce the struggle.

    Questions to Know How to Combine Personality with Learning Style

    To begin with look at these three tips to help you weigh how a homeschool curriculum will fit your child’s learning personality.

    1. What is the approach of the curriculum you’re interested in?

    For example, if you know your child has done best with moving while learning then a traditional workbook approach is not the choice for your family.

    Too no matter how comfortable you are with the curriculum, if it’s not a fit for your child, you will face resistance.

    So, when a curriculum does not fit our child’s personality, it can make stress increase.

    Remember, all curriculum falls into one or more approaches.

    Next, you need to know what has not worked.

    2. What curriculum has NOT worked in the past?

    And it may seem like an obvious question, but I’ve learned identifying what will work means to identify exactly what did not work.

    Then identify what was the approach of the last curriculum you used which didn’t work.

    Third, identify what is your child’s strength.

    So much focus is on what a child can’t do instead of what he can do.

    3. What is your child’s FAVORITE subject?

    Next hear my heart when I say be sure it’s your child’s favorite subject and not yours or the one you want them to know because it’s your favorite.

    Then, is it a content or skill subject?

    For example, if your child’s favorite subjects are art and music and he struggles with writing, he may be more of a creative thinker.

    However, if you child prefers to walk around reading encyclopedia or from his device, he could be analytical.

    Matching his strong points to homeschool approaches is vital. For instance, Charlotte Masson puts an emphasis on music and art and delaying language arts.

    When choosing workbook style homeschool curriculum, some families don’t realize they are choosing a homeschool learning style.

    Homeschool learning styles are not the first things some families understand about homeschooling.

    However, all curriculum or resources are divided into homeschool learning styles.

    Once you know which learning style fits your family best, it’s easier to conquer the overwhelm of choosing homeschool curriculum.

    What is the workbook homeschool learning style or approach?

    Basically, it’s the traditional homeschool approach which includes workbooks.

    Further, understanding what is traditional homeschool curriculum ensures that you’re making the right decision for your homeschool.

    Too, not only will you save hundreds of dollars by not buying the wrong curriculum, but you meet your homeschool goals.

    So, the workbook style or traditional homeschool approach has these characteristics.

    • A workbook, textbook, or worktext can be used for one subjects or combined subjects in an all-in-one.
    • Normally, these workbooks are written for a classroom setting although many more have popped up since the pandemic for instruction at home. However, their main underlying use is still to teach a group.
    • They are divided up by grade so that children are studying what other children their grade level are studying.
    • Some workbooks have teacher’s manuals, answer keys and sometimes test so they are designed for a drill and kill approach.
    • Some new homeschoolers like using workbooks because it gives them a sense of security because it’s what they used in public school

    In addition, some families choose a traditional homeschool approach because they work and may need the accountability for their kids.

    In addition, some states have stricter homeschool laws than other states, and it may make it easier for record keeping.

    A worktext is different from a workbook although they may appear similar.

    The Difference Between Workbook and Worktext

    Unlike a workbook, worktext does some teaching right in the workbook.

    Worktext are great for teaching kids to be independent. You don’t have to do all the teaching.

    Usually some background information along with activities are all built into the lesson plan. I t’s like having the textbook and workbook in one spot.

    Furthermore, a worktext teaches by example, models, and illustrations. A worktext not only has a place for your student to record his work, but gives explanations, samples, and even background information right in the book. It’s like writing in a textbook.

    I have one kid that really likes that concept.

    Now, that you have a better description of the workbook or traditional homeschool approach look at these lists I’ve created.

    Too, some series of workbooks works great across the boards for many grade levels.

    • Carson Dellosa 
    • The Mark Twain media series of books are beautiful for geography and history especially, have other subjects and loved by older kids.
    • Spectrum is another loved series with multiple subjects and grades.
