Why My Homeschooled Kids Are Not Given the Choice to Go to Public School

Why my homeschooled kids are not given the choice to go to public school sounds harsh. Also, you’ll love more tips on my page The Dynamics of How to Homeschool Easily and Smarter.

Also, extreme homeschooling or parenting is not my style.

However, I do strive for being a balanced parent, which I feel is much more challenging than setting fast and hard rules.

Why My Homeschooled Kids Are Not Given the Choice to Go to Public School

I had loving and balanced parents and still maintain a close relationship with them.

Let me back up and explain first that your childhood affects your current parenting and homeschooling style.

Oh sure, my parents made their fair share of parenting mistakes, like any parent will, but extreme, dictatorship-like decisions based on my parents’ personal whims was not one of them.

True, I realize not all parents are good parents and then a child from that type of family who may have been dictator like wants to restore balance when they are parents.

But in the quest to restore balance, parents can inadvertently give a child the idea they have as much experience as the parent.

Communicating lovingly to me and often why I couldn’t do something was always foremost in how my parents modeled to me.

Good Decisions are MODELED Not Wished For

Switching back to present day and helping many new homeschoolers, I noticed a common trait among some parents.

Some parents beginning to homeschool want their child’s approval regardless of age to homeschool.

And yes of course a child’s age has a lot to do with this but maybe not. More on this in a minute.

Through conducting thousands of workshops in person, (my courses are online now) I noticed some homeschool parents bring negative patterns of their parents’ parenting or lack of it to their current homeschool.

It’s true homeschooling and your learned parenting patterns are inextricably linked.

Too, I’ve homeschooled long enough to know that public school and homeschool are two VERY different approaches.

See my post The Great Homeschool Hoax – Public School At Home in how I help others see two DIFFERENT ways to educate.

In addition, I’m not saying homeschooling at all costs either. Some simply do not have the circumstances although they want to homeschool.

Back to parenting. Wouldn’t you agree that balanced parenting is harder to achieve than laying down arbitrary rule making

Look at some of the common mindsets that I have avoided and/or adopted which worked for me in helping my kids see that homeschooling can be a superior education.

ONE// I don’t think a homeschooler is called to homeschooling.
I do feel that homeschooling is THE BEST choice for ANY child.

Besides the obvious low teacher ratio, homeschooling is about choice of schedule, choice of academics, real life experiences, and an overflowing amount of enriching activities.

Which family doesn’t deserve to have a shot at that?

I do not think only certain families are called to homeschool, but all families should have the option.

However, just because homeschooling is the best method for every child to learn, it doesn’t mean everybody has the circumstance to.

Good is not wished just upon some and others not.

The bottom line has been that because each year I had the circumstances to homeschool.

I knew it was the best option for any child, a life changing decision was not given into the hands of a child who may thinks he misses a friend or two.

TWO// Homeschooling is similar to the mindset needed for a lifelong commitment.

Marriage calls for a heavy commitment up front when you don’t really know your future husband until you start living with him no matter how long you dated.

Jumping into marriage without trying to find out as much as you can about your husband is not wise by any stretch of the imagination.

5 BEST How to Homeschool Books

I've rounded up some of the best books to help you get started homeschooling.

Homeschooling for New Homeschoolers: When You Don't Know Where to Begin

Homeschooling 31 Day Boot Camp for New Homeschoolers is a real eye-opener on homeschooling. It will alleviate a lot of the anxieties about getting started homeschooling. Reading each chapter’s highlights will give you encouragement, knowledge, guidance, and peace of mind to homeschool with confidence. The best part is that you’ll be educating the person who loves your kids the most in this world--YOU! Armed with the knowledge to make better choices in curriculum will empower you to continue the path of home education. Unlike many books based on one family’s experience, Homeschooling 31 Day Boot Camp for New Homeschoolers is also based on Tina’s many years of mentoring hundreds and hundreds of new homeschoolers at live workshops. When you don’t know where to begin Homeschooling 31 Day Boot Camp for New Homeschoolers equips you to successfully homeschool your children.

The Unhurried Homeschooler

Homeschooling is a wonderful, worthwhile pursuit, but many homeschool parents struggle with feelings of burnout and frustration. If you have ever felt this way, you’re not alone! Most of us need to be reminded of the “why” of homeschooling from time to time—but "The Unhurried homeschooler" takes parents a step further and lifts the unnecessary burdens that many parents place on themselves.

Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler's Guide to Unshakable Peace

Those who have made the decision to homeschool their children have done so out of great love for their children and a desire to provide them an excellent education in the context of a warm, enriching home.

The Brave Learner: Finding Everyday Magic in Homeschool, Learning, and Life

Parents who are deeply invested in their children's education can be hard on themselves and their kids. When exhausted parents are living the day-to-day grind, it can seem impossible to muster enough energy to make learning fun or interesting. How do parents nurture a love of learning amid childhood chaos, parental self-doubt, the flu, and state academic standards?

Unschooled: Raising Curious, Well-Educated Children Outside the Conventional Classroom

Education has become synonymous with schooling, but it doesn’t have to be. As schooling becomes increasingly standardized and test driven, occupying more of childhood than ever before, parents and educators are questioning the role of schooling in society. Many are now exploring and creating alternatives.

Making a marriage work is hard, but thinking in the back of your mind that divorce is an option or a way out makes the effort put forth in the beginning meager and utterly defeating.

And yes, many have had to escape a bad marriage but too it’s easy to give up if you want to separate at the first sign of trouble.

Both of those commitments required HARD WORK and success just doesn’t happen.

Homeschooling is similar to that type of  commitment in marriage.

Why My Homeschooled Kids Are Not Given the Choice to Go to Public School

You need to focus more on how to make homeschool work.

And not dwelling on returning to public school .

This requires a resolute determination, a belief in the homeschool approach, knowledge (which is gained) and focused energy.

Decision-Making Ability is a Gradual Process

It’s easy to assume that all of our homeschool years are going to be sunshine and rainbows, but you and I know that is a lie.

Like most teens, mine too have gone through times when they too buck the decisions my husband and I make.

Our process to help them has always been the same and we did this by:

1.Listening to my boys without interrupting them or telling them they can’t feel that way.

They should have their own opinions and our decision for them to not have the choice to go to public school doesn’t deprive them of how to gradually start the decision-making process.

When boundaries are created a child or teen has a safe environment in which to learn.

2. Explaining the reasons why they don’t have a choice to go to public school.

Your reasons may vary, but a few of our reasons usually went like this; this is a superior education, society has changed and we want our influence on you, your course load in high school can be lighter or heavier, you have more time for a social life instead of caged, you can have a job earlier, enjoy an apprenticeship, be free of bullying, be free of the atmosphere of drugs and savor freedom.

THREE// Let’s talk teens, rebellious years and even single mom homeschooling.

3. Acknowledging that we are capable of mistakes. Too, let our children know all decisions are made out of giving our children the best.

4. Finding the solution or fixing the problem. For example, if one of my boys felt like he was missing out on friends, then I MUST fill that need. And you know that unless you decide to homeschool under a rock, activities are endless for kids.

Matter of fact, finding other boys their age was a problem in our homeschool and I created a thriving co-op. Out of that co-op, my boys have lifelong friends.

They also wanted to be with other homeschooled teens more, so they took art lessons, and ballroom dancing.

I didn’t stop there, I planned movie trips and outings for boys and I planned for 2 or 3 field trips per month instead of our usual one. Yes, w

Single mom homeschooling is also more prevalent today and because homeschooling can be flexible to a mom’s work schedule, many single parents are lapping up that freedom.

When we give our kids the option to return to homeschool a mindset can set in where they think that something better exists, when in fact we are giving them the very best!

Why unnecessarily place defeat in front of you or your children?

Additionally, teens vary on their maturity. Just because a teen reaches a certain age doesn’t mean he or she is capable of sound decisions.

I’ve helped many parents pull their teens out of public school because of drug problems, bad friends, or just because the teen is worn out or worst bullied.

A teen still needs a parent who is loving, caring, and balanced and they need it now more then ever before.

Be Willing To Work Hard as the Homeschoool Educator

While true, it’s important to listen to your teen it’s better to have your teen in a safe environment so their confidence soars.

Here are some do NOT:

  • Don’t use the return to public school as a threat. It may give your kids the wrong impression of people who have had to use public school. Besides threats and intimidation is not a way to parent.
  • Don’t keep asking your children if they miss school. They are only going to tell you what their limited experience has been and they do not have the ability to make life changing decisions.
  • For sure don’t ask a homeschooled teen if he thinks he should return to public school. Problems will not get better when he is away from you, they only go below the surface for a while to reappear.
  • Don’t think a child has to experience bad or experience public school to appreciate good. If that seems to be the case, focus on how to help them appreciate what they have. Appreciate means to hold in high value. Attitudes and actions prove appreciation or lack of it. A return to public school doesn’t build that in children.

Leave behind rigid and unbending rules, but set your homeschooling up for success by creating boundaries for it.

It’s time to set sail on an adventure with these ship craft ideas from Viking ships to the RMS Titanic. Also, you’ll love the ideas I have on my page RMS Titanic Unit Study and Free Lapbook.

I have a tutorial and loads of other ideas to encourage any type of sailor.

Besides, ships were once the only source of transport between lands,

They were used for exploration, migration, moving cargo, fighting wars, pirating, and even for entertainment.

Egyptians, Romans, Vikings, Pilgrims, Pirates, and more made their way across vast stretches of water on boats or ships.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Ships have come a long way in how they are built, navigated, and used but they are no doubt still important to us.

We have also learned much and made a lot of advancements through ships of old like the Titanic, The Mayflower, The HMS Victory, and the USS Enterprise.

Today’s craft celebrates these ships and a fun and unique hobby that highlights them- a ship in a bottle.

5 Facts About Ships

  1. Ships use the term “knots” a nautical mile per hour in navigation.
  2. The word quarantine comes from the Italian words- quaranta giorni meaning forty days. This comes from the Venetian policy of quarantining ships from places stricken with the plague for 40 days to keep those on board from infection.
  3. Vessels that are intended for navigating coastal and inland waters are usually called boats and ocean-going vessels are called ships. For example, ships are also usually larger than boats.
  4. The Seawise Giant was the longest ship ever constructed at 1,504.1 ft. long in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan.
  5. Furthermore, the earliest historical evidence of boats is found in Egypt during the 4th millennium BCE.

Wood Stick Ship

Use wood craft sticks to create your own Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria ships.

Finally, add this fun easy ship in a bottle to your ship craft ideas.

Ship Craft Ideas | How to Make an Easy Ship in a Bottle

You will need:

  • 2-liter or 3-liter bottle
  • Wood scrap
  • White craft foam
  • Wood coffee stirrers
  • Twine
  • White school glue
  • Blue craft paint
  • Brown craft paint
  • Black craft paint
  • Box cutter
  • Clear tape
  • Hot glue gun/stick
Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

First, start by peeling off the label and cleaning out the bottle with warm soapy water.

Use a box cutter to make a “door” on one side of the bottle.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Make it large enough to insert your ship.

However, it has to be small enough that when you lay it down you can’t see it from the sides. I made my cuts 2 ½” by 6” for my 3-liter bottle.

Next, you want to start making your boat model.

Moreover, use scrap cardboard to cut out a boat shape 5” long by 2” wide as well as a piece as long as the back.

And one for either side to make the sides- 1”-1 ½” tall is a good height.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Hot glue the sides to the bottom of the boat and fill in any gaps with additional hot glue.

Be sure to test your ship and make certain that it will fit in the door you cut in the bottom.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Now, paint the ship as you like, to give it a wood look, paint a tan/brown and distress it with black, allow it to dry completely.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

The next thing you are going to do is cut down two wooden stir sticks to about 3”.

In addition, hot glue them into place in the center of your ship, and add two small scrap pieces of cardboard to either side of each one to stabilize it.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Cut sails from white craft foam.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Hot glue into place.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Carefully slide the ship into the door you made on the bottom.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Mix ½ cup of glue with a ¼ cup of blue paint.

Easy Ship in a Bottle

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Also, tape along the cuts in the bottom with tape, be sure to secure it so the paint mixture doesn’t drip out.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Carefully pour into the opening of the bottle.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Further, rotate the bottle, coating the bottom and slightly up the sides with a paint mixture to create water.

Additionally, add more as needed to cover the very bottom of the boat and you should also be able to easily slide the boat around at this point.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Allow the paint and glue mixture to dry for a few days.

However, you want to do this with the cap off or moisture will form condensation on the inside of the bottle.

Bottle Ship

In addition, once the mixture is dry the boat will be held in place, color the cap with a brown permanent marker to resemble a cork and screw it back on.

Ship Craft Ideas & Ship Terminology | Fun Ship in A Bottle Craft for Kids

Wrap twine around to cover the neck of the bottle and give it a more nautical feel.

Lastly, apply hot glue to the wooden scrap (you can find thick planks of wood at Dollar Tree).

Allow it to cool a bit, press the bottle down into it, and hold it in place until it cools and hardens.

Now, your bottom cut is now disguised.

I have sweet Johnny Appleseed cookies and some facts about Johnny Appleseed. Also, you’ll love some facts on my page Apple Lapbook and Apple Unit Study.

Besides, National Johnny Appleseed Day is September 26th to honor the contributions he made.

The recipe is a semi-homemade one that starts with a basic sugar cookie mix and uses fresh apples.

8 Facts About Johnny Appleseed and Sweet Johnny Appleseed Cookies

8 Facts About Johnny Appleseed

  1. Unlike a lot of other legends, Johnny Appleseed is a real person, his given name was John Chapman.
  2. He loved nature, insects, and animals, and later in his life became a vegetarian.
  3. Besides planting apple trees, he also planted medicinal plants and herbs, like -mullein, motherwort, mayweed pennyroyal, and several others.
  4. The image that comes to mind of Johnny planting apple trees may be of him randomly tossing seeds out of a sack here and there as he went but he actually planted orchards on unclaimed lands. By planting there it was a way of legally claiming ownership in parts of the west. He went back later and sold the trees at a profit and would comeback years later and sell the trees at a profit.
  5. John was very wealthy when he died, he then left his 1200 acres of apple orchards and other land to his sister.
  6. The apples that he planted were not sweet, delicious apples, instead, they were small, tart apples used to make Applejack and hard cider, two very popular drinks at the time.
  7. You can still see one of the trees he planted in Nova, Ohio, here is a 176-year-old tree, the last known tree to be planted by Johnny Appleseed.
  8. He traveled through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, parts of northern West Virginia, and Ontario planting mostly barefoot, sometimes via canoe.

Help your child complete this human skull anatomy activity using a styrofoam skull from Dollar Tree. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

Whenever fall rolls around I always grab some of the skeleton parts and pieces to repurpose as models in our anatomy lessons.

And this styrofoam skull caught my eye and I immediately knew what I was doing with it.

I had the idea to turn it into a labeled skull like I have seen available for purchase, but they are expensive,

So, unless your child wants to be a brain surgeon such an extensive one is not necessary.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

This activity has several parts that will help your child learn the different bones of the skull.

First, they examine a diagram to learn and mark the various areas.

Secondly, they create the keys to make this activity a game, and finally they play and identify the parts again.

If they oversee making everything from start to finish, by the time they get to the game they are already quite familiar with the different names and sections.

You can read aloud about the facts of the different parts of the skull as your child works on coloring in the human skull anatomy activity.

7 Facts About The Human Skull

  1. The top of the skull (cranium) is made up of 8 bones that cover the brain to surround and protect. The lower part makes up the bones of the face and is made of 14 bones.
  2. Teeth are not considered bones that make up part of the skull.
  3. Besides your eyes, nose, and mouth openings the human skull has many small holes in it known as foramina. They allow nerve and blood vessels to pass through.
  4. Skulls look different and can be identified as male or female, even heritage by the size and shape of them.
  5. The jawbone (mandible) is the only bone in the human skull that moves, it is also the largest and strongest bone in the skull.
  6. In Latin ‘frons’ stands for forehead which is what gives the frontal bone its name.
  7. The skull is not fully fused at birth, this allows for brain growth. Babies are born with soft spots on the top and back of their head called the fontanelles.

Human Skull Anatomy Activity

One of the best things about this activity is that it is self-correcting.

Once your child makes a guess, he can check the color-coded key to see if he is right.

You will need:

  • Foam skull
  • 8 different marker colors
  • Skull diagram
7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

To create a game with your skull you will also need:

  • 2 dice
  • Parts of the skull key-typed or handwritten
  • Craft stick or pencil for a pointer

First, you are going to want a good diagram either in a book or online for your child to follow.

Here is a simple diagram to follow on Neuroscience for Kids.

Next, decide on a color for each part of the skull that they are marking.

Here are the parts:

  • occipital,
  • frontal,
  • parietal,
  • temporal,
  • nasal,
  • maxilla,
  • mandible,
  • and zygomatic bones.

The next step is to have them type or handwrite a key for the colors that each will be and another one with each one numbered.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

Use the colors you have decided on to outline each section of the skull.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

Color each of the sections in the coordinating color. You could also have them paint or cover each section in thin layers of playdough.

7 Human Skull Facts and Cool Human Skull Anatomy Activity

Now you can turn learning the parts of the skull into a game simply by adding a pair of dice and the numbered key.

To play:

Use the numbered key your child made and roll both dice (anything above an 8 is a reroll).

The colored key should remain covered until ready to check their answer.

Whatever number rolled corresponds with one on the key, your child must identify.

Have your child use a skewer, pencil, or craft stick as a pointer to point to the answer.

Play can be as long or as short a time as you like.

4 Fascinating Carnivorous Plants For Kids to Learn About

  1. Venus Flytrap- While this exotic-looking plant looks like it comes from the depths of the Amazon rainforest it is only native to North and South Carolina. They primarily eat spiders and ants and only 5% of their diet is winged. This plant has tiny little hairs that when disturbed trigger a reaction from the plant, if the bug stays for longer than a few seconds the “mouth” of the Venus flytrap closes over the poor unfortunate bug. They dissolve the bug into liquid and absorb it. Fun fact, they rarely eat their pollinators.
  2. Pitcher Plants- Are composed of modified leaves known as pitfall traps, a mechanism with a deep cavity that is filled with digestive liquids that attract and drown its victims in the nectar inside. There are pitcher plants that grow in wetland areas of the eastern part of the US and Canada as well as in places like Australia and Madagascar. They can be anywhere from 6 inches to 36 inches tall.
  3. Butterwort- This particular plant feasts on gnats, springtails, and other small insects. Their method of capture is using their leaves that are covered in fine translucent hairs to secrete a greasy sticky substance. This substance smells like nectar and gleams attractively in the sun.  It secretes enzymes and acids to kill and dissolve prey that the plant absorbs.
  4. Sundews- These are similar to fly paper, they attract insects with a sweet and sticky substance that also holds them fast. Their tentacle-type leaves then curl around it and smother them. About 50% of the species is found in Australia.  While it only takes 15 minutes for a sundew to kill their prey it can take weeks for them to digest it.
