One of the most memorable foods in The Lord of the Rings is Lembas bread, the special travel bread gifted to the Fellowship by the Elves.
According to the story, just a small piece could sustain a traveler for an entire day.
ELVEN LEMBAS BREAD
While our homemade version won’t quite the powers, it’s a delicious baking activity that lets your family experience a small taste of Middle-earth.
Measuring ingredients, mixing dough, and wrapping the finished bread in parchment or leaves also provide practical cooking skills, making this the perfect hands-on activity.
You will need:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 T. baking powder
- ¼ tsp. Salt
- 1 ½ tsp. Cinnamon
- ½ cup butter
- 1 tsp. Vanilla extract
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 T. Honey
- ⅔ cup half and half
Preheat oven to 425
Place parchment paper or a silicone mat on a baking sheet. Set aside.
Combine flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and brown sugar.
Mix in honey, softened butter, and half and half into the dry mixture; do not overmix, just enough to combine everything.
Roll dough out onto a floured surface to roughly ½” thick.
Cut into 3-4”x squares.
Score an X from corner to corner.
Bake for 12-13 minutes until the edges are golden brown.
Allow to cool completely before serving for the most delicious results.
