Earth day is a fun time to learn about our planet and I’m including water density experiments too. Also, look at my page Free Earth Science Lapbook & Unit Study Ideas.

So, we’re learning about water stratification by doing this fun skittles earth day activity.

This experiment is a fun way to learn about how water moves and how colors mix. And to ponder what happens when hot and cold mix.

Easy Kids Earth Day Activity & More Water Density Experiments

Before you get started on the activity, ask your kids about what they know about the temperature of water in a lake versus an ocean.

For example, the water at the surface may be warmer because it’s been heated by the sun.

However, the water deeper won’t be as warm because the sun doesn’t reach it.

Earth: An Intimate History

WHAT IS WATER STRATIFICATION

Water stratification happens when water forms layers based on temperature.

Hot water is lighter than cold water.

When water is heated by the sun, it becomes less dense and wants to float on top of cooler, denser water.

This is why oceans, lakes, and even swimming pools have layers of water that are different temperatures.

HOW TO DO A SKITTLES EARTH DAY EXPERIMENT

Supplies:

  • Blue and green Skittles (found in Berry Skittles)
  • Plate (with a raised edge)
  • ¼ -½ C warm water

First, gather all the supplies needed.

Add blue and green Skittles around the edge of the plate.

*Try with cold water or hot water!

  • Why do the colors spread? Because of the sugar coating!

The sugar and food coloring dissolve into the warm water and then spread through the water.

  • Why don’t the colors mix? Water stratification!

Each Skittle has sugar and food coloring which are made up of different masses with different properties.

That creates a barrier that stops the colors from mixing.

Rising Water with a Candle Easy Hands-On Science Experiment

Today, I have a cool rising water with a candle easy hands-on science experiment. Also, look at my page 4 Weeks Free Physical Science Unit Study & Best Hands-on Ideas for more activities.

I think this hands-on experiment is great for showing science principles such as fire, oxygen and air pressure for kids in k- 6th grade.

This is one of my favorite simple science experiments because it is easy to pull together with common household items and has a dramatic effect.

Rising Water with a Candle Easy Hands-On Science Experiment

The rising water experiment involves a burning candle in a jar with water and demonstrates the concept of air pressure difference.

So, this experiment demonstrates principles of air pressure and temperature change.

And it shows how the temperature of air inside the jar affects its volume and the surrounding air pressure

PHYSICAL SCIENCE BOOKS FOR KIDS

First, look at these books about physical science for kids.

When possible, I prefer to use living books if we can find them. It’s not always easy.

Finally, look at the rising water with a candle science activity.

RISING WATER WITH A CANDLE HANDS-ON SCIENCE EXPERIMENT

Just a quick recap, as the candle burns it heats up the air inside the container, causing it to expand and escape. 

When the candle goes out the air cools rapidly and creates a lowered pressure inside the jar compared to the outside air, which results in the water rising to equalize the pressure.

You will need:

  • Mason jar or clear glass
  • A small candle.
  • Clay, Play-Doh
  • Lighter or matches
  • Water
  • small saucer
  • Food coloring – optional

First, roll up a little bit of Play-Doh or clay and place in the center of your plate then press the candle into it.

This will hold your candle up in position for the experiment.

Now you can use plain water, but if you add a drop or two of food coloring, you can really see what happens with the water a lot better.

Carefully pour your water into the saucer.

Light the candle and make sure that it has caught on well.

Slowly lower the mason jar over the candle until it is resting on the plate in the water.

Watch what happens as the candle burns for just a bit and then burns out.

Kids find this absolutely amazing.

We let the jar stay for a while in the water that remained inside the jar.

It can be used from preschool through upper elementary.

Teaching the water cycle should be a very simple process In the early years.

You can go a little more in depth as they grow which means you can customize this plate activity to reflect what they know at various stages.

Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection make up the 4 stages of the water cycle.

And they are very important because it provides water to humans, animals, and plants.

Besides providing hydration it redistributes nutrients, pathogens and sediment in and out of aquatic ecosystems.

To teach it simply we are going to use a paper plate.

Also, I have a few other basic items to show these 4 steps and create a craft/science project combo for a hands-on water cycle activity.

I have explained the water cycle on a basic level, gathered a few more fun activities, and resources that you can use to create a mini unit to enjoy.

Simple and Fun Hands-On Water Cycle Activity For Kids

4 Stages of The Water Cycle

  • Evaporation– Water evaporates under the sun’s heat and becomes a gas that is found in earth’s atmosphere. Demonstrate evaporation with a pot of simmering water and how it seems to disappear over time, the steam is visible and helps give kids a concrete idea.
  • Condensation– Water condenses in the atmosphere when it becomes cold, forming clouds. You can demonstrate this by showing what happens on the outside of a glass of ice water over time or the condensation on a mirror after a hot shower.
  • Precipitation-When there is too much moisture in a cloud water is released from the clouds in the form of rain, sleet, hail, and snow. For younger children, set out little bowls or cups with examples of each in the form of water, ice, and “snow” (a little cornstarch mixed with oil). Allow your child to explore and examine each form of precipitation.

  • Collection – Water is collected and held in different areas. For example, places like oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds, and underground. Water in its solid form, ice, is held in glaciers and snow.

Then the entire process starts all over again.

Paper Plate Water Cycle

For preschoolers we will keep this hands-on water cycle activity very simple with minimal labels but you can challenge older children to put in a bit more detail or even use a wider variety of materials to put it together.

You will need:

  • Paper plate
  • Blue paint
  • paintbrush
  • Blue craft foam/paper
  • Yellow craft foam/paper
  • Markers/paint pens
  • Cotton ball/cotton stuffing
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors

First, let your child paint the entire plate a light medium shade of blue and then set aside to dry, explaining that this is the sky and ground water.

While it is drying, cut a wave of blue craft foam out slightly shorter than the width of the plate.

This represents an ocean or where water is held. Cut a few raindrops for precipitation, and a yellow sun.

Once the plate is dry, they can glue the sun in place on one side of the sky and the wave across the bottom with the glue stick.

Use a bit of cotton ball, cotton stuffing, or even a little ball of white tissue paper to create a cloud opposite the sun.

Glue on the raindrops underneath the cloud you made.

Use a marker to draw directional arrows and label the plate as the water cycle.

If your child is older, they can do the entire plate from start to finish and even label each part of the water cycle themself.
