Marie Curie wasn’t just a scientist, she made discoveries that helped save lives. She was born in Poland in 1867. And she was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.

Marie Curie and her husband Pierre worked together in a small lab. They discovered two new elements.
The two elements were Polonium and Radium. Polonium was named after her home country of Poland. Radium was named because it glowed in the dark.
And Radium was special because it gave off tiny, powerful particles. Marie called this phenomenon radioactivity.
Additionally, during World War I, she created mobile X-ray machines so doctors could see broken bones and help injured soldiers.
