I have a fun hands-on life cycle butterfly activity. Also, look at my page Free Insect Unit Study for more ideas.

Life cycles are often one of the first science lessons that younger children get to learn about.

Instead of putting a preprinted worksheet in front of your child to teach them, why not give them an art project that turns into science with this life cycle butterfly activity?

Fun and Easy Hands-on Life Cycle Butterfly Activity for Kids

We are taking some basic craft supplies that most of us have in our art supplies and turn them into a lesson on the 4 stages of a butterfly’s life.

Let your child be a part of it from the creation of each piece to laying out the cycle so they get the most out of the lesson.

As your child builds each stage in the life cycle, talk to them about the changes taking place.

10 Fascinating Butterfly Facts

First, look at these butterfly facts.

  1. There are almost 20,000 different butterfly species.
  2. A group of butterflies is known as a flutter.
  3. Butterflies taste their food with their feet.
  4. The most common butterfly in the US is the Cabbage White. It is a simple small mostly white butterfly with 1 or 2 black dots on each wing (1 for males, 2 for females).
  5. One of the largest butterflies is the Giant Swallowtail Butterfly, reaching a wingspan of 4 to 7 inches.
  6. While you might think butterflies have 2 wings, they have 4, 2 forewings and 2 hindwings.
  7. The North American Monarch travels an average of 2,500 miles to migrate to warmer weather.
  8. Butterflies have their skeletons on the outside of their bodies, called the exoskeleton. The exoskeleton protects the insect and keeps water inside their bodies, so they don’t dry out.
  9. The only continent where butterflies have not been found is Antarctica.
  10. Butterflies can fly as fast as 12 mph while their cousin, the moth, can reach speeds of up to 25 mph.

Still others will hibernate through the cold months. For all butterflies, life begins with metamorphosis. In one of nature s most amazing feats, caterpillars become creatures of beauty and grace.

Fun and Easy Hands-on Life Cycle Butterfly Activity for Kids

Use markers to color or paint 3 clothespins to create the body. Set aside to dry.

Fun and Easy Hands-on Life Cycle Butterfly Activity for Kids

Spritz 2 coffee filters until soaked then use watercolors to paint one green for the chrysalis.

Then paint the other colors for butterfly wings. To make it symmetrical you can fold one in half and just paint one side allowing it to soak through.

Fun and Easy Hands-on Life Cycle Butterfly Activity for Kids

Hang outside to dry with an extra clothespin.

For the eggs, you will just need to set aside a couple of pompoms.

To create a caterpillar, draw on its eyes and glue pom poms along the length of its body.

Cut a small piece of pipe cleaner and bend it into an antenna, secure it in the pincher part of the clothespin.

Fun and Easy Hands-on Life Cycle Butterfly Activity for Kids

Take the plain clothespin caterpillar and wrap it up in the green-painted coffee filter and twist the top to create the cremaster (or stem) portion.

Fun and Easy Hands-on Life Cycle Butterfly Activity for Kids

Take the final painted clothespin and draw on the eyes, glue pom poms on for the body.

This time we are going to accordion fold the colorfully painted coffee filter and slip it inside the opened clip of the clothespin.

Spread out the wings and add another small piece of pipe cleaner to the clip to make the butterfly antennae.

Fun and Easy Hands-on Life Cycle Butterfly Activity for Kids

Write each of the stages on your paper plates-egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly.

Have your child put them in order on the floor and then match each of the pieces they made to the correct spot.

Also, creating an origami frog is fun, great for building fine motor skills, and can be done while learning about the colorful jumpers that make their home in the canopy layer.

So, simply choose different colors of origami paper and add a little detail with markers to create an army of frogs. And yes, army is the right word for a group of frogs.

About Origami

Additionally, you can use these origami frogs as a tool for learning about the markings of the various Amazon Rainforest frogs, as a STEM activity for measuring distances, building, problem-solving, fine motor, and attention to detail.

Origami was first called “orikata” in Japan meaning “folded shapes” and was later changed to origami meaning folded paper.

While you can use any paper you like if it is square.

To get good folds and flexibility you really want to use the special origami paper. This very thin paper is specially designed for folding and works beautifully, but it will take some practice to get good at it

The most important thing to remember for this activity is to try to fold straight along the edges and create a sharp crease by using the bone folder or a craft stick on every fold.

You will need:

  • Origami paper
  • Markers
  • Bone folder or craft stick

Fold the paper in half, creasing sharply along the fold.

I’m sharing plant life in the Amazon rainforest facts and we’re making a giant rafflesia arnoldii craft. And I have more ideas on my pages Rain Forest – Amazon, Rain Forest – Animals of the Amazon, and Rainforest Amazon Activities for Kids.

The plant life in the Amazon Rainforest is beautiful and often unbelievable.

For example, the gorgeous bright Rafflesia arnoldii that looks like it’s straight out of science fiction and smells like rotting meat.

I couldn’t resist turning it into a craft project for our study on plant life in the Amazon Rainforest.

10 Plant Life in The Amazon Rainforest Facts and Make a Fun Rafflesia Arnoldii

It turned out to be a super fun and colorful craft.

And we learned a lot about plant life in the Amazon Rainforest as we worked on it.

It was low budget and easier than it looks, my kind of project.

The hardest part of it was waiting between the drying sessions.

10 Facts About Plant Life in The Amazon Rainforest

  1. The Amazon Rainforest is home to more than two-thirds of the world’s plant species.
  2. The Rafflesia arnoldii is the biggest single flower found in the entire world at more than 3 feet across and its home is the Amazon Rainforest.
  3. The bloom of the arnoldii lasts just a little more than a week.
  4. The Kapok tree is the largest and most important species in the Amazon rainforest.
  5. All members of the genus Rafflesia produce huge flowers, the smallest still being the size of a dinner plate.
  6. More than 60,000 species of plants grow in the Amazon jungle.
  7. Many plants have adapted and developed drip-tip leaves that funnel water off themselves to prevent rotting and fungus growth.
  8. There are many plants that are used for medicinal purposes like fighting cancer to soothing asthma. Plants like the coca plant, White trillium flower, Sodo, and the Cinchona tree are so important to medicines.
  9. Jungle soil is shallow. Some of it’s like 4 inches deep yet some of the tallest trees in the world grow in it.
  10. Emergent trees as high as 200 feet and the crown of the emergent tree can spread to be the size of two football fields.

Then add some plant life in the Amazon rainforest hands-on activities.

How to Make a Paper Plate Giant Rafflesia Arnoldii Craft

You will need:

  • 7 paper plates
  • Red craft paint
  • White craft paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun/sticks
10 Plant Life in The Amazon Rainforest Facts and Make a Fun Rafflesia Arnoldii

Cut out the center of one plate.

10 Plant Life in The Amazon Rainforest Facts and Make a Fun Rafflesia Arnoldii

You don’t have to go all the way to the edge but you want a large enough opening you can see well inside of it.

Take 5 plates and cut the rippled edge off along the bottom of the plate and then some up the sides to create a basic petal shape.

After I did the first one, I used it as a template to cut the other one so they were the same.

10 Plant Life in The Amazon Rainforest Facts and Make a Fun Rafflesia Arnoldii

Leave the last plate intact.

Paint all plates red, allow them to dry, flip and paint the other side. Dry well again.

10 Plant Life in The Amazon Rainforest Facts and Make a Fun Rafflesia Arnoldii

Add a little pink or another light accent color to the center of your intact plate and let it dry.

10 Plant Life in The Amazon Rainforest Facts and Make a Fun Rafflesia Arnoldii

Flip over the full plate and hot glue each of the petals around the back side.

I put them about ⅓” from the edge all the way around.

10 Plant Life in The Amazon Rainforest Facts and Make a Fun Rafflesia Arnoldii

If you want, use craft glues but I think hot glue is a better option for this project as it is rather heavy and hot glue dries quickly.

Flip the plate back over and hot glue the plate with the center cut out to the main center plate.

10 Plant Life in The Amazon Rainforest Facts and Make a Fun Rafflesia Arnoldii

Draw little spiked shapes inside the center plate to create the center disk of the plant.

10 Plant Life in The Amazon Rainforest Facts and Make a Fun Rafflesia Arnoldii

Finally use the back end of a paintbrush dipped in white paint or a white paint pen to create the dots all over the plant.

These are called warts. What do you think? Just too fun!

I have some easy ideas for Amazon Rainforest crafts and a fun bubble wrap patterned anaconda. And I have more ideas on my pages Rain Forest – Amazon, Rain Forest – Animals of the Amazon, and Rainforest Amazon Activities for Kids.

Exploring the beauty and mystery of the Amazon Rainforest gives your child a chance to really dig in and learn a lot, spend extra time on their favorite parts, and can be enjoyed by everyone in the family.

You can focus on the flora or fauna, products that come from the rainforest, conservation, or the ecosystem.

Fun Easy Amazon Rainforest Crafts and Make a Bubble Wrap Pattern Anaconda

I have an easy and fun bubble wrap anaconda project for today that can be modified for everyone in the family, encouraging older children to make more complicated designs.

Creating your anaconda from craft foam instead of paper gives you a sturdier longer lasting rainforest craft that can even be taken outside.

Or perhaps in the bathtub, after all the scientific name for Anaconda is – Eunectes murinus, and it means “good swimmer” in Latin.

Rainforest Creature Facts

  1. The green anaconda is the largest snake in the world, the record being 33 feet long, 3 feet wide at its longest point, and almost 900 lbs.
  2. Anacondas are semi-aquatic, preferring the water, they are great swimmers, but will also climb trees in search of food and like to hang, waiting for prey.
  3. The rainforest is home to many carnivorous plants, that is plants that eat insects and small animals.
  4. Macaws are the largest species of parrot and are well known for their beautifully colored feathers.
  5. There is an amazing lizard, the common basilisk, that is known as the Jesus lizard. Why? Because it can run on water.
  6. Sloths spend 90% of their life hanging upside down.

Rainforest Crafts – Bubble Wrap Anaconda

You will need:

  • A large sheet of green craft foam
  • Bubble wrap
  • 2 to 3 paint colors.
  • Foam brushes
  • Scissors
  • A marker
Fun Easy Amazon Rainforest Crafts and Make a Bubble Wrap Pattern Anaconda

Cut your bubble wrap to the same size or just slightly smaller than your foam sheet. I used large foam sheets-12×18, but you could also use construction paper or even a green poster board sheet.

Fun Easy Amazon Rainforest Crafts and Make a Bubble Wrap Pattern Anaconda

Add 2 to 3 colors to your paint palette. A paper plate works wonderfully for this.

Fun Easy Amazon Rainforest Crafts and Make a Bubble Wrap Pattern Anaconda

Then have your child dab the color all over the bubble wrap side and be sure to give it a good coating.

Fun Easy Amazon Rainforest Crafts and Make a Bubble Wrap Pattern Anaconda

Turn the bubble wrap over and press it firmly all over the paper. You can press it by sliding your hands along but make sure you hold it in place, so it doesn’t smear.

Carefully lift the bubble wrap to reveal your snake scales.

Allow it to dry completely.

Flip your craft foam over and somewhere near the center draw a simple, triangular snake head. You can draw the entire coiled snake body if you like but I prefer to give it a little more freehand shape for the body.

Fun Easy Amazon Rainforest Crafts and Make a Bubble Wrap Pattern Anaconda

Cut the head out first and then spiral around, cutting a shaped body from the head to the tail.

Fun Easy Amazon Rainforest Crafts and Make a Bubble Wrap Pattern Anaconda

Use markers to put on round eyes with slits.

Add a little forked tongue cut out of red craft foam and glue in place.

Because your anaconda is made of craft foam it is more durable and would be a fun part of outdoor play.

Finally, how to make this adorable sloth craft.

How to Make a No Sew Sloth

You will need:

  • Brown felt
  • Cream felt
  • Tan felt
  • Black Felt
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun/sticks
  • Something round about 4”-5” wide
Learn About Mammals In The Amazon Rainforest & Make an Adorable Sloth Craft

For the main body of the sloth, I opted for a by-the-yard brown felt that was a little prettier than standard craft felt.

However, you can recreate the same design with the regular texture of craft felt as well.

Trace your round object on the backside of the brown felt.

Learn About Mammals In The Amazon Rainforest & Make an Adorable Sloth Craft

Cut out the circle.

Fold in half and begin to shape the head at one end, cutting through both sides like this.

Learn About Mammals In The Amazon Rainforest & Make an Adorable Sloth Craft

Cut out two arms/legs and trim as needed to shape your body a bit more.

Learn About Mammals In The Amazon Rainforest & Make an Adorable Sloth Craft

Open the felt and run hot glue along the edge on one half, quickly fold the other half over and press into the glue to close it up.

Learn About Mammals In The Amazon Rainforest & Make an Adorable Sloth Craft

Because the felt I bought was so plush I felt that I didn’t really need to stuff it.

But if you want to you can add some stuffing or a few of your felt scraps before gluing it up to give it a fuller belly.

Learn About Mammals In The Amazon Rainforest & Make an Adorable Sloth Craft

To create the face, fold a small piece of your cream felt in half and cut out a mask shape. You can measure it by holding it against the face of your sloth, trimming it as you need.

Cut tan felt into two small strips with a rounded end.

Learn About Mammals In The Amazon Rainforest & Make an Adorable Sloth Craft

Take the black felt and cut two little eyes, a nose, and a mouth, of course, he’s smiling, he is too cute not to.

Learn About Mammals In The Amazon Rainforest & Make an Adorable Sloth Craft

Assemble the face by gluing everything to the mask shape and then adhering to the head.

Learn About Mammals In The Amazon Rainforest & Make an Adorable Sloth Craft

If you like you can glue your sloth to a small branch, so he looks like he is hanging by folding the tip of his hands and feet over and securing them with glue.

I couldn’t resist cutting out a little green felt tropical leaf to add to his branch.
