This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

This fun hands-on playdough brain activity will bring any anatomy lesson to life. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

This homemade playdough brain activity is a great way to teach your child about the different parts of the brain and their functions.

You can let them oversee the experience from start to finish by letting them make a soft safe moldable homemade playdough.

How to Make a Fun Hands-on Playdough Brain Activity

In addition, they can divide and color the dough, pressing it into the mold to build a complete brain, removing it, and labeling.

Learning what the brain is made of and how it works is a very important part of any anatomy studies and this hands-on activity lets them really be involved.

If you store the playdough brain properly you will be able to use it time and again over the course of a week or two before it dries out.

6 Parts of the Human Brain

You can make small cards to identify the differences between the left and right sides of the brain for your child to put into place as well.

And you will see this simple activity has several applications and can be adapted for all ages and skill levels.

Label each of the 6 parts.

But beyond just labeling the parts you can turn it into a game by asking questions like

  • Which part of the brain is responsible for processing and
  • Which part takes care of automatic behaviors like breathing, heart rate, sleep, and temperature control?

Now, let’s look at what each part of our model is responsible for.

  • Frontal Lobe- manages thinking, emotions, your personality, judgment, self-control, muscle control and movements, and memory storage.
  • Parietal Lobes –Sensory perception and integration, such as taste, hearing, sight, touch, and smell.
  • Occipital Lobe-Visual perception includes color, form, and motion.
  • Temporal Lobe-Processes auditory information and the encoding of memory.
  • Cerebellum- Coordinates your movement and balance. It is also known as the little brain.
  • Brain Stem-The brainstem is the stalk-like part of your brain that connects your brain to your spinal cord.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

I have a fun and easy digestive system craft activity for you to demonstrate how our stomach breaks down food. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

As is appropriate for the preschool and early elementary crowd, it’s a hands-on activity and of course a little gross – making for a very memorable lesson indeed.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

The stomach is just one part of the digestive system.

It is one that is easy to demonstrate for young learners and is what we will focus on for this craft/activity.

Let’s look at a simple breakdown of the digestive system.

Basic Steps in The Digestive System

Mouth – This is where your digestive system starts, your saliva helps break down your food as you chew, and then when you are ready to swallow it your tongue pushes the food down your throat and into your esophagus.

Esophagus – In the esophagus the small flap called the epiglottis closes over your windpipe so that you don’t choke on it. Contractions in the esophagus work to deliver food to your stomach.

Stomach – The stomach can stretch and hold up to 4 pounds of food at a time. Once food has reached your stomach it is mixed with enzymes until it is broken down enough to pass onto the small intestine.

Small Intestine – The small intestine is about 22 feet long and breaks down your food even more so your body can absorb all the vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats from it.

The nutrient-rich blood then goes to the liver to be processed and stored while the remainder of your food passes into the large intestine.

Large Intestines- The job of the large intestine is to absorb water and electrolytes, as well as forming and propelling feces to the very last stop. Drum roll please – your rectum.

Rectum – Yep, all that leftover food that isn’t used has to go somewhere, it hangs out here until you are ready to go to the bathroom and then it gets pushed out.

Finally, look at this fun and easy digestive system craft activity.

Digestive System Craft – The Stomach

Before you begin, you will obviously want to explain that this is just one part of your digestive system.

There are a couple of steps before and several steps after that help your food be processed by your body.

You Will Need:

  • Ziplock bag
  • Red permanent marker
  • Black permanent marker
  • ¼ cup of soda
  • Slice of bread
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Dishcloth or paper towel
Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Once you have gathered all your supplies you can remove the writing from your bag to make it completely see through.

Wet a towel with rubbing alcohol and rub it right off.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

You can use a book or google for reference and let your child draw a stomach on the bag in permanent marker.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Have them label the stomach, as well as the tube for the esophagus and small intestine coming out of each end of the stomach.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Tear up the bread into small pieces and set aside.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Pour in a small amount of your soda. This will act as the stomach acids.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Add the bread to the baggie.

You could also use crackers or cookies, just something soft that will break down easily with liquid.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

Press out most of the air and seal the bag.

Now for the fun, demonstrate by squeezing the bag how the acids and muscles work to break the food down.

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

You will see it won’t take long and it is completely broken down (obviously this takes longer during actual digestion).

Basic Steps in the Digestive System and a Fun Digestive System Craft

You can stop here, and you have had a good quick lesson but if you want to add to it a little bit snip off one small corner.

Explain that while there is more to the digestive system than just what is shown on the bag this is what happens at the end when everything that was needed was taken out of the body by the digestive system.

Let them squeeze the waste into a bowl, because after all everybody poops!

Swapping out worksheets and using human body activities middle school instead can make learning anatomy fun and memorable. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

With just a few simple craft products your middle schooler can create a human eye model and learn all about this remarkable complex organ.

Creating, putting it together, and labeling will help the lessons about eye anatomy stick.

8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

You can make this a bit more advanced with more detail or simplify it to suit your child.

I was able to pick up all the supplies from Dollar Tree so it is quite inexpensive for this project as well.

Finally, look at how to make this fun human eye model.

Human Body Activities Middle School Make An Eye Model

You will need:

  • 3”-4” Styrofoam ball
  • Markers or paint pens
  • Pink craft foam
  • White craft foam
  • Hot glue gun/sticks
  • White cardstock
  • toothpicks
8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

First, use paint pens or markers to draw whatever color iris you want on the center of the styrofoam ball.

8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

Once it is dry, add a black pupil and the little lines or striations known as the limbic rings in the iris.

8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

Cut a piece of white craft foam about 4” long and roll it into a tight tube, secure it with hot glue, a good diameter is about ¾”. (Optic Nerve)

8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

Next, you want to cut 4 rectangles that taper at one end out of the pink craft foam.

These should also be about 4” in length and a little less than 1” at the widest point. (Rectus Muscle)

8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

Now make a small irregular circle around 1” in diameter. (Lacrimal Gland)

8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

At this point you are ready to begin building your eye model. First, you want to hot glue to one end of the white rolled craft foam and hot glue it to the back directly opposite of the iris.

Hold in place until it has cooled.

8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

Take the pink foam and glue them in place evenly around all 4 sides a little more than halfway back on the eye.

Secure the opposite end by gluing it to the optic nerve (white foam roll).

8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

Add some red lines on the white part of the eye (sclera) toward the back to the center for small blood vessels.

Glue the lacrimal gland in place towards the back/side.

8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

This is the point when it is ready for labeling.

Have your child write down the following eye parts on small strips of paper- iris, optic nerve, lacrimal gland, sclera, pupil, rectus muscle.

Attach to toothpicks with glue.

8 Eye Facts & Human Body Activities Middle School & Fun Eye Model

Now they can be inserted into the craft foam as well as the styrofoam ball in the correct place.

While it will leave holes in the foam, it is still reusable to practice on later or even used by another child.

Craft a Fun Hand Straw Model to Explore Human Anatomy Muscles & Tendons

I have a fun hand straw model craft to explore human anatomy muscles, bones, and tendons. Also, I have this Human Body Crafts page for more hands-on ideas. And this Beautiful Human Body Lapbook and Fun Unit Study.

Because it is so important in the basic sciences kids learn from preschool to high school, hands-on human anatomy is a no brainer.

Let’s explore human anatomy muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones with some fun hands-on activities.

The reason I like this activity is because it’s very inexpensive or free if you have these items on hand.

Craft a Fun Hand Straw Model to Explore Human Anatomy Muscles & Tendons

Also, it gives kids a peek into the inner workings of their body, and has a lot of impact in helping kids to understand the mechanics of the hand.

Muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones make up the human musculoskeletal system.

Human Body Muscles, Ligaments, Tendons and Bones

Let’s look at each.

  • Muscle- Soft tissue, muscles help you move, lift or even sit still. Some muscles aid in digesting food, breathing or sight. The heart is a muscle that pumps blood throughout your body.

You have 3 types of muscle in your body:

  • Skeletal muscle- attached to the skeleton, 700 of these muscles spread throughout the body.
  • Smooth muscle- found in blood vessels and organs in the abdomen.
  • Cardiac muscle-The thick middle layer of the heart.
  • Tendon-A tendon is not the same thing as a muscle. Tendons are strong cords of flexible tissue (made of collagen) that connect your muscles to your bones. You can easily feel one of your tendons, run your hand down the back of your ankle and feel the cord that runs down it.
  • Ligament- This is a fibrous connective tissue that attaches bone to bone and helps hold bones together and keeps them stable.
  • Bones-Bone is made of protein, collagen, and minerals, especially calcium. Your bones provide shape to your body, allow for movement, protect vital organs, facilitate breathing, and a variety of cells are made in the marrow that are absolutely necessary.
  • Cartilage- Is the strong, flexible connective tissue that protects your joints and bones. Think of it as a shock absorber.
  • Connective Tissue- Connective tissue is the tissue that connects or separates and supports all the other types of tissues in the body.

Your child can now gently pull on each string to demonstrate how when the hand receives electromagnetic impulses from the brain the tendons and muscles work together to do what it tells them to.

To stabilize the hand further you can hot glue the back of it down onto cardboard and have your child see how they are able to move the hand.
