The Best Sixth Grade Homeschool Curriculum | Tips and Recommendations

July 7, 2024 | Leave a Comment
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

I have the best sixth grade homeschool curriculum recommendations. Also, you’ll love my pages Homeschool Curriculum for more ideas and grade level curriculum. And my other page How to Successfully Homeschool Middle School.

And I have a list for you breaking down each subject so that you can put together.

In public school, sixth grade is a major time of transition.

Your child is moving from elementary school to middle school.

The Best Sixth Grade Homeschool Curriculum | Tips and Recommendations

The workload is harder.

Too, the social pressures are more difficult, and sports and other activities may be amped up.

The beauty of homeschool is that you can make this a much smoother transition for your child.

For example, one way to do this is through choosing a curriculum that is just right for their needs.

What I have learned in my many years of homeschooling is that there is not a one-size-fits-all-all curriculum.

Sometimes the whole thing is a great fit but other times they need a different method of math, science, history, and etc.

What I want to do is give you the tools to help your child succeed with the sixth-grade level of homeschool.

And giving you options that are the right fit for your learner, not mine or Holly homeschooler down the street.

I don’t need to remind you that there are plenty of opportunities for socializing your tweens and teens.

But I do want to remind you that just going out and living life provides your child with plenty of opportunities to learn to interact and that you can bring their curriculum subjects right into

My Favorite Tips for Sixth Grade Homeschool Curriculum

  • If you are new to homeschooling find your child’s learning style, use their learning style to build their curriculum in a way that they enjoy.
  •  Don’t stop going on fun adventures (field trips) just because the kids are older, they still need it and can get a lot out of it, but maybe ask for their input a bit more.
  • Work on research skills like using reference sites, books, and internet search skills.
  • Continue to do lots of fun hands-on things to keep them interested and engaged.
  • Begin to give them more input and control over their schedule, learning choices, and topics of study.
  • This is a great time to introduce a fresh teacher, whether it be through co-op classes, online via outschool, or trading off subjects with another mom.
  • Also, look at my book Homeschooling 31 Day Boot Camp for New Homeschoolers: When You Don’t Know Where to Begin.

All of it is motivated -- right down to when Fred is working at the PieOne pizza place, and he's trying to decide whether to put the tomatoes on the pizza before of after it's cooked and we get the commutative law. -- book (p. 8).

The Best Fourth Grade Homeschool Curriculum | Tips and Recommendations

July 5, 2024 | Leave a Comment
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

You’ll love my recommendations for the best fourth grade homeschool curriculum from online to hands on ideas. Also, you’ll love my page Homeschool Curriculum for more ideas and grade level curriculum.

Fourth Grade homeschool is generally a year of instruction in phonics, copywork, literature, spelling, and continued cursive/composition.

You can opt for American History and Geography or go a different route.

The Best Fourth Grade Homeschool Curriculum | Tips and Recommendations

One typical science scope is earth and space, plants, the cycle of life, animal, electricity and magnetism, and motion.

By this age kids are becoming used to more formal lessons and able to hold attention for longer and longer periods of time.

That means you can increase their workload a little bit in preparation of middle school, which is on the horizon before you know it.

Before we get into those recommendations look at a few tips I have for this year to help it go smoothly and give you a fresh outlook.

More Fourth Grade Homeschool Curriculum Tips

  • 2-3 hours is a good guideline for a homeschool day at this age. I would still recommend a few breaks here and there throughout the time.
  • Make grocery trips and other errands more intentional by allowing them to compare prices, address letters to be dropped off at the post office and negotiate deals at yard sales.
  • Create a dedicated daily reading time for 20-30 minutes, even if it means the whole family curls up on the couch for quiet reading. I think a combination of required reading and letting them choose age-appropriate books is a great idea.
  • Especially in the younger ages I like to at least work in some supplemental learning if not schooling year-round through the summer to help with learning loss. This can be easy workbooks, apps, and some light reading.
  • Don’t forget to work in some fun things like gameschooling, poetry tea time, and unique art challenges.

You may find by the time you are putting together your third grade homeschool curriculum you may have found what you are using is a perfect fit for your child’s learning style. Also, you’ll love my page Homeschool Curriculum for more ideas and grade level curriculum.

Orr you may need to change some or all of it up.

I have a few unique suggestions for every subject as well as a handful of extras and some tips for choosing and using a third-grade curriculum.

By third grade your child can be a bit more independent in his work.

The Best Third Grade Homeschool Curriculum | Tips and Recommendations

He can understand more complicated math concepts and read at a higher level which means you may have to dig a little deeper to challenge them.

This is a transitional year that moves them from the most basic of learning to more complex topics and challenges like perfecting their cursive and preparation for higher math like double digit multiplication.

At this age children should be learning about the six areas of geography.

The Best Third Grade Homeschool Curriculum | Tips and Recommendations

The 6 areas include the world in spatial terms, places and regions, physical systems, human systems, environment and society, and how geography is used.

Third Grade Homeschool Tips and Recommendations

  • Read to them every day with fantastic classic books, fairy tales, and new engaging chapter books to help develop language, vocabulary, and of course imagination.
  • Also include quiet reading time. Add anytime of day including right before bed.
  • Create a schedule that works for your family, if you work during the day, start school in the afternoon and finish up in the evening or dive right into learning in the morning right after breakfast.
  • You can begin to challenge them with more involved projects like dioramas, and expect more details in their writing.
  • Practice parts of speech in silly and memorable ways like with mad libs in addition to or instead of worksheets for a learning experience that feels more like fun.
  • Purchase or check out a wide variety of beautiful science picture books to naturally incorporate reading and science into the day.

Bedtime Math: A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late (Bedtime Math Series)

Our mission: to make math a fun part of kids' everyday lives.

We all know it's wonderful to read bedtime stories to kids, but what about doing math? Many generations of Americans are uncomfortable with math and numbers, and too often we hear the phrase, "I'm just not good at math!" For decades, this attitude has trickled down from parents to their kids, and we now have a culture that finds math dry, intimidating, and just not cool.

Bedtime Math wants to change all that. Inside this book, families will find fun, mischief-making math problems to tackle―math that isn't just kid-friendly, but actually kid-appealing. With over 100 math riddles on topics from jalapeños and submarines to roller coasters and flamingos, this book bursts with math that looks nothing like school. And with three different levels of challenge (wee ones, little kids, and big kids), there's something for everyone. We can make numbers fun, and change the world, one Bedtime Math puzzle at a time.

Second grade homeschool curriculum should be fun and engaging while building on basics that your child has already learned. Also, you’ll love my page Homeschool Curriculum for more ideas and grade level curriculum.

Gone are the sweet little round cheeks of a baby and a taller leaner child is taking over.

I can assure you every phase has its joys spent with your heads leaning over a book learning new things and watching those little ‘aha!” light bulb moments come across their eyes.

The Best Second Grade Homeschool Curriculum | Tips and Recommendations

At this age children can sit for longer periods of time but that still doesn’t mean they should sit at a desk or table all day long.

There is still much learning to be done through play, field trips, and fun activities.

We will include some technology and games too so that their interests continue to be explored and developed in these formative years.

Second graders are building up reading skills, continuing with print and cursive instruction, spelling, phonics, and copywork.

The Best Second Grade Homeschool Curriculum | Tips and Recommendations

So, these are the skills we are going to focus on with the resources and tips I have.

Second Grade Homeschool Tips and Recommendations

  • If you are not doing it already, consider beginning a morning time routine. It is such a wonderful slow start to the day. This usually includes reading aloud, music, character training, and handicrafts.
  • Keep in mind that children learn different things at different rates, your second grader may be a whiz at math but hasn’t started reading yet and that’s okay. No need to sound the alarm yet unless you truly suspect a learning disability.
  • While they won’t be sitting at a desk all day it is helpful to create a dedicated learning space with posters and maps to reinforce what they are learning (even if you put everything on a trifold science board instead of walls).
  • Attend a homeschool convention this year if you are able to, this is the best place to see a lot of curriculum in person, hear lectures from homeschool veterans, and hang out with like-minded parents on the same journey.
