10 Things to Learn From The Fun Geronimo Stilton Chapter Books

We absolutely adore the fun Geronimo Stilton chapter books for ages 7-10, grades 2nd-5th, but also reluctant readers will love the Geronimo Stilton books.

Geronimo Stilton is an editor in chief of The Rodent’s Gazette, the most “famous” newspaper in New Mouse City.

He’s also the author of his own best-selling book series.

But the Geronimo Stilton chapter books were actually written by Elisabetta Maria Dami who is an Italian children’s book author and she is the creator of the character Geronimo Stilton.

10 Things to Learn From The Fun Geronimo Stilton Chapter Books

And the character of Geronimo Stilton is a shy, funny, but adventurous mouse.

Because the author Elisabetta Maria Dami has an interest in archaeology and a passion for traveling and exploring, Geronimo is always off on an adventure.

The whole series makes for a fun literature study but especially to incorporate geography and history into your unit studies.

About the Geronimo Stilton Series

Look at these ten things to learn from the Geronimo Stilton books.

1. Learn literary devices in a fun way.

Be on the lookout for examples of literary devices such as:

  • Onomatopoeia
  • Similes/Metaphors
  • Hyperbole
  • Idioms
  • Puns

What is an onomatopoeia?

Other than it being my favorite little gem found in these books, it’s a literary device to know and super fun to teach.

First, let’s take a minute to appreciate how fun this word is to say.

If this is a new word for your kids, be sure to listen to the pronunciation.

“Onomatopoeia is the process of creating a word that phonetically imitates, resembles, or suggests the sound that it describes.”

For example, a dry fall leaf crunches underfoot.

Also, look at my Amazon Shop to see a list of the books.

A bumblebee buzzes around the backyard.

Geronimo Stilton must love Onomatopoeia too because the word pictures he uses to show the reader this literary device are perfection for a visual learner.

How many examples of onomatopoeia can you find in each chapter?

2. Have a fun vocabulary scavenger hunt.

Make a list of new words you find in each chapter.

It won’t be hard for your kids to find them.

10 Things to Learn From The Fun Geronimo Stilton Chapter Books

3. Focus on character development.

You will fall in love with the characters.

They are full of personality.

For example, Geronimo Stilton is quite the “scaredy-mouse”, but he is always going on an adventure and facing lot of fears to get there.

Have your child pick a favorite character and follow his/her character development throughout the story.

4. Nurture a love for famous mystery novels and authors.

If your geek level is as high as mine, and I assume it must be if you’re reading this post, you’ll love the fun facts that pop up for adults too.

These books are a great bridge to a study about other famous mystery titles and authors.

There’s even a nod to some characters you might recognize like Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie’s well-known fictional Belgian detective.

What a fun way to introduce your reader to other books, authors, and the mystery genre!

5. Cultivate a love for history and geography.

Not only does Geronimo Stilton live in the center of New Mouse City, he reluctantly travels around the globe.

Each book will land the reader in a new place.

10 Things to Learn From The Fun Geronimo Stilton Chapter Books

These books are great for learning state facts, especially New York, and they’re also the perfect addition to a history and geography study about where the setting takes place.

6. Have some cheesy food fun.

Geronimo Stilton is a cheese connoisseur. He eats lots of cheese.

He talks about cheese and makes “punny” jokes about cheese.

It’s impossible to not want to snack on some cheesy delights of some kind.

  • Create a cheese platter and sample some new snacks.
  • Make homemade macaroni and cheese.
  • Look at moldy cheese under a microscope.
  • Have a cheese fondue night.

7. Nurture a love for timeless treasures like antiques.

Any antique lovers out there? Well, you will love Geronimo Stilton’s eye for timeless treasures.

If your kids are into antiques, visit a few thrift stores and hunt for treasures.

Check out American Pickers or Antiques Roadshow.

8. Learn how to plan a trip.

Plan a vacation to the destination in your book.

Estimate the cost of flight, hotel, and car rental. Research prices on the internet to find the best deals.

  • How much will you need to for food and spending?
  • What activities will you do while you’re there?
  • Add the cost of excursions or admissions to special events or destinations.

9. Learn how to face fear.

Geronimo must face lots of fears to travel, solve mysteries, and go on each adventure.

These are a great way to talk to your kids about fears, anxiety, and coping skills.

10. Learn about nurturing family ties.

I love the Geronimo is a family guy!

He spends a lot of time with his nephew, Benjamin and his sister, Thea.

It’s a great opportunity to focus on the importance of family.

  • Create a family tree.
  • Research your family’s origin.
  • Send an email to a family member to brighten their day.
  • Do something nice for a sibling.

Then, you can also add a few facts about Ancient Egypt.

Geronimo Stilton The Fourth Journey Through Time Fun Cleopatra Collar

Add this The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game.

Cleopatra and Ancient Egypt Fun Facts

  • Ancient Egyptians loved board games.
  • Egypt has the only remaining ancient wonder in the world.
  • While she was known for her beauty, she was also very intelligent.
  • Cleopatra spoke around 9 different languages.
  • Both female and male ancient Egyptians wore eye makeup.
  • Cleopatra was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty.
  • Cleopatra’s favorite perfume was Mendesian perfume named for the city Mendes.
  • She had 4 children- 3 with Mark Antony- Ptolemy Philadelphus and twins Cleopatra ‘Selene’ and Alexander ‘Helios’. And one with Julius Caesar who she named Caesarion “Little Caesar”.
  • Ancient Egyptians called their home Kemet rather than Egypt.

If you want to add a few books to your mini unit study then, Everything Ancient Egypt.

And 1,000 Facts About Ancient Egypt are a couple great companion reference books.

Also, look at this great video on Cleopatra Queen of Egypt or Ancient Egypt For Kids from Homeschool Pop while you create your jewelry.

Cleopatra Project Ideas

Finally, let’s make a fun Cleopatra collar and craft jewelry.

You will need:

  • smooth sturdy cardboard
  • empty toilet paper rolls
  • hot glue gun/sticks or school glue
  • craft paints
  • dinner plate and a bowl
Geronimo Stilton The Fourth Journey Through Time Fun Cleopatra Collar

First, trace a large dinner plate onto your cardboard.

I used the back cover from a 12” x12” cardstock pack. You could also use poster board, but it will crumple a bit easier.

Corrugated cardboard will work but may be too thick.

Geronimo Stilton The Fourth Journey Through Time Fun Cleopatra Collar

Next, trace a bowl up near the top of the larger circle. You want to leave more room at the bottom for your necklace design.

Cut out both circles.

Geronimo Stilton The Fourth Journey Through Time Fun Cleopatra Collar

Cut all the way up one side of the empty toilet paper rolls.

These next few steps are fun and are what make this project turn out amazing.

Start by creating designs on your cuffs and collar with hot glue.

This is a good introduction to a hot glue gun if you feel your child is ready because it doesn’t really require touching the glue or pressing things together.

Geronimo Stilton The Fourth Journey Through Time Fun Cleopatra Collar

Now, use the hot glue gun to create a bunch of different jewel shapes on aluminum foil or a silicone mat.

I did find with the foil that it stuck to the hot glue. I just peeled off around it because it doesn’t affect it if left on the backing.

You can also help tidy up the edges and shapes with scissors. Dried hot glue cuts very well.

Geronimo Stilton The Fourth Journey Through Time Fun Cleopatra Collar

These silicone mats are great for protecting your table or desk while painting, gluing, etc.

Too, another tip is that you can use regular white school glue if you like to make your design.

But hot glue dries much faster. Let the hot  glue harden and dry completely, pull off any glue strings that may be left behind. Then paint them in using pretty jeweled colors.

Geronimo Stilton The Fourth Journey Through Time Fun Cleopatra Collar

While your jewels are drying give your cardboard collar and cuffs a coat or two of gold, going right over the hot glue lines

Geronimo Stilton The Fourth Journey Through Time Fun Cleopatra Collar

Once your gold and jewels are dry you can attach them to the cuffs and collar with a bit more hot glue.

Your beautiful Cleopatra inspired cuffs and collar are ready to wear and show off your royalty!

Digging into ancient history can be so much fun and educational at the same time.

Homeschooling offers us a wonderful opportunity to introduce the world in a more relaxed way and make memories at the same time.

The next book in the Geronimo Stilton series Out of Time (Geronimo Stilton Journey Through Time #8) has fun learning facts about Mozart. So, if your child is loving the Geronimo Stilton books, you’ll love this next hands-on craft with the book.

How about combining Mozart, music, and the adorable antics of Geronimo Stilton?

In the Geronimo Stilton series, The Eighth Journey Through Time sails through 4 different time periods in the book.

What a busy mouse.

Learn About Mozart The Eight Journey Through Time Geronimo Stilton Series

Out of Time (Geronimo Stilton Journey Through Time #8) takes your little learner to meet:

  • Alexander the Great,
  • Queen Cleopatra,
  • Sir Francis Drake,
  • and todays topic of interest- Mozart in The Court of Vienna.

The way the books are set up, your child can read the whole thing or just choose to start at one of the time periods.

Learn About Mozart The Eight Journey Through Time Geronimo Stilton Series

Geronimo meets Mozart and his family and helps them get to the Court of Vienna.

Of course like the other books in this series, it is loaded with fun facts. Also, it has introductions to several instruments, fashion of the time period, and many historical references.

Also, there are a few logic games where your child studies a picture and discover what is wrong.

These books are aimed at middle to upper elementary, but they are really fantastic for struggling or reluctant readers.

They are not quite a graphic novel and have a fair amount of reading to them.

Learn About Mozart The Eight Journey Through Time Geronimo Stilton Series

But it is laid out in such a fun and colorful way that they hardly realize they are learning all wonderful historical facts.

Benefits of Learning Music

Even if you or your child have no musical aspirations music is a great experience and has so many learning benefits.

  • Strengthens memory and attention.
  • Reinforces important language skills.
  • Relaxes and relieves anxiety.
  • Improves listening skills.
  • Helps learn math skills (quarter, half note, etc and fractions).
  • Nurtures creativity.
  • Makes you use more of and different parts of your brain.

While you listen to some of Mozart’s music, play a memory game.

Encourage your child to identify the instruments they hear.

They can also listen for when the music speeds up and slows down. What a wonderful way to help you both relax and focus, this can be a great beginning, end, or reset to your homeschool day.

Also, look at these sites:

  • Fun Ways to Teach Children Note Values
  • Dig a little deeper into learning about Mozart with this YouTube video- History of Mozart  from Bedtime History .

Then, add some fun facts about Mozart.

Marvelous Mozart Facts

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756.
  • He wrote his first musical compositions at just 5 years old.
  • Mozart could speak 12 different languages.
  • He wrote over 600 musical pieces in his short lifetime.
  • He was left-handed.
  • Mozart wrote his first opera at just 12 years old.
  • Mozart died  December 5, 1791 at age 35, believed from rheumatic fever.

Let’s make a DIY music memory game without the need for any special equipment.

But I do suggest that if you don’t have a paper slicer you grab one.

They are so great for cutting straight lines and very inexpensive. But you can do this with just a ruler and scissors also.

Music Appreciation Activity DIY Memory Game

You will need:

  • white cardstock
  • colored cardstock
  • glue stick
  • paper cutter or scissors
  • markers
Learn About Mozart The Eight Journey Through Time Geronimo Stilton Series

First, cut your white cardstock into 2 ½ ”x 2 1/2” squares.

Again, you can use scissors, but these little paper slicers come in handy dandy for a lot of different projects and are really reasonable.

Learn About Mozart The Eight Journey Through Time Geronimo Stilton Series

Next, cut your colored cardstock slightly larger than the white, say 2 3/4” to 3” square.

Draw music notes, simple instruments, music symbols, or write out musical terms on your white cards.

Remember you will need two of each.

A quick Google search can help you find some inspiration.

But here is a photo of the 6 I did for this version. You can make more or less depending on your child’s familiarity with music and their skill level.

Learn About Mozart The Eight Journey Through Time Geronimo Stilton Series

Once your designs are drawn glue the white cardstock to the center of the colored squares.

This helps create sturdier cards and you can’t see through the white cards anymore.

Learn About Mozart The Eight Journey Through Time Geronimo Stilton Series

To play the game it is simply like traditional memory, mix up and then lay all the cards out face down.

Take turns picking two at a time to try and create a match, if you get a match you keep the pair, and draw again, but if not put them back down in the same spot.

Repeat until all cards are matched up.

Music Note Memory Variations

  • Write the notes on half your cards and the name on the other half.
  • Draw instruments on your cards instead.
  • Write composer names.
  • Draw music bars with different notes

Today for mouse into space we are doing an easy straw rocket. The book Mouse in Space (Geronimo Stilton #52) is about outer space. So, if your child is loving the Geronimo Stilton books, your child will love making this easy straw rocket.

If you have a child who loves all things space consider tying it in with Geronimo Stilton Mouse in Space for a mini space unit study.

Geronimo Stilton Mouse into Space:How to Make an EASY Straw Rocket

By now you know that we love the Geronimo Stilton series.

And the series is wonderful for young readers.

They are fantastic for either read aloud or as your child’s independent reading time and are good for lower to upper elementary.

Geronimo Stilton Stories

I think they are great for developing reading fluency and vocabulary in a fun way.

However, they also dive into so many fantastic science and history lessons.

Kids think they are just reading a silly story about a mouse off on adventures.

Before you know your kids are filling their heads with historical facts about Cleopatra, Da Vinci, Genghis Khan, Vikings, and more.

Or maybe they are getting science lessons about dinosaurs, the Australian Outback or of course…outer space.

Geronimo Stilton Mouse into Space:How to Make an EASY Straw Rocket

Also, I’ve included a few ideas to expand your space unit study.

7 Activities for a Homeschool Space Unit Study

  • Use watercolors, chalk pastels, or some other unique art medium to draw a rocket and label the parts-nose, fins, body tube, windows, etc.
  • Learn How to Make Astronaut Ice Cream
  • Make a fun glow in the dark Puffy Paint Moon
  • Add a few more books to Geronimo Stilton like Who Was Neil Armstrong or The Mysteries of the Universe.
  • Create a space themed sensory bin with black gravel and space themed toys.
  • Watch National Geographic Rockets 101

Finally, my HUGE Exploring Space and Astronomy Free Unit Study for Multiple Ages

Geronimo Stilton Mouse into Space:How to Make an EASY Straw Rocket

Spend some time talking about the science of what makes rockets work.

National Geographic has a great article on just that.

How to Make an Easy Straw Rocket

This simple and easy straw rocket activity is something that will keep the kids busy flying missions all day.

And you are very likely to already have this stuff on hand so there is no need to run out for special supplies

You will need:

  • Two straws, one that fits inside the other
  • Colored cardstock
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Stickers or markers for decoration
Geronimo Stilton Mouse into Space:How to Make an EASY Straw Rocket

Cut a general rocket shape and two fins out of colorful cardstock.

You can make it any size you like. But the lighter and smaller it is the higher it will fly so keep that in mind.

Geronimo Stilton Mouse into Space:How to Make an EASY Straw Rocket

Flip the rocket and fins over and tape together securely on the back.

Flip your rocket back over and decorate the front with markers or fun stickers.

Here we used little round stickers like you would use for yard sale pricing to make the rockets windows.

Don’t forget to name your rocket. The Geronimo 1 just felt right.

Geronimo Stilton Mouse into Space:How to Make an EASY Straw Rocket

Tear off bits of orange or red cardstock to create flames from the boosters.

Tape them on the back as well if you like to add more detail.

Geronimo Stilton Mouse into Space:How to Make an EASY Straw Rocket

Cut the paper straw so that it is just about 1” longer than your paper rocket.

Then, smash down one end. Tape it off to completely close off the hole on one end.

Geronimo Stilton Mouse into Space:How to Make an EASY Straw Rocket

Next, tape securely to the back. And leave 1” sticking out of the bottom with the opening at the bottom and the taped off end toward the top.

Geronimo Stilton Mouse into Space:How to Make an EASY Straw Rocket

Too, I discovered that a paper straw fits perfectly inside of a Dunkin Doughnuts straw. (You know where we’ve been.)

Now, point your rocket to the sky and put the end of the straw in your mouth and blow. Soon your rocket will take off.

Geronimo Stilton Mouse into Space:How to Make an EASY Straw Rocket

Also, try experimenting with different sizes of rockets, fins, as well as various straw lengths to see what flies the farthest, fastest, straightest, etc.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

Today in the Geronimo Stilton The Fourth Journey Through Time in the Geronimo Stilton Books, we’re making a fun DIY Egypt Senet Game.

So, I’m combining a love for Geronimo Stilton, Ancient Egypt, and board games into one fun and educational activity.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

Flipping through the Geronimo Stilton The Fourth Journey Through Time, particularly the first adventure which is Cleopatra’s Reign in 48 BC we decided to learn about games.

So, we created the oldest known board game in the world which is Senet.

Many Egyptians were found buried with a Senet (or Game of Passing) game to represent passing to the afterlife.

Geronimo Stilton Book Pictures

This Geronimo Stilton book is just like the others.

The pages highlight great vocabulary words for the theme and show fashions of the time period.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

And beautiful architecture like Cleopatra’s Palace.

This is a great way to introduce your child to ancient Egypt, the symbols, customs, and one of the ways they passed their time.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

While this Geronimo Stilton story didn’t mention Senet, I love to think that Cleopatra sat around on a lazy afternoon playing a game of Senet.

And sipping on a favorite beverage while obviously being fanned and hand fed her favorite foods.

The oldest evidence of Senet we have are pieces found as far back as 3100 BCE.

And the hieroglyphics resembling Senet in the tomb of Merknera.

The rules were lost, but they have been put together using context clues, paintings, and the rules of similar games.

We checked out as much information on the internet as we could.

And we put together what we think is roughly the rules for the game.

Rather than dice they used colored sticks to determine how many moves to make.

The object is to move all your pieces off the board. It feels similar to backgammon or a very primitive chess game.

How to Make a Kid’s Egyptian Senet Game

Now, let’s make our own version of Senet.

You will need:

  • stiff cardboard
  • 4 wood craft sticks
  • A ruler
  • Colored sharpies or other markers
  • White and black clay

Then, here are the directions for creating the game.

Paint or color 4 sticks black on one side and a bright color or you can draw patterns on the other side.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

Cut a piece of cardboard to roughly 5” x 12”.

You could make it smaller or larger.

I used the carboard back from a pack of cardstock.

You could upcycle a cereal box or whatever type of cardboard you have on hand.

Mark of 3 rows of equal width with your ruler and draw the lines with a pencil.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

Next, draw 10 vertical lines so that you have 3 rows of 10 squares. These squares represent “houses”.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

Trace over all the lines with a black marker.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

The original game does not have numbered squares, but you will want to mark yours at least lightly in the corner to track it easier.

The numbers snake back and forth.

Instead of starting at the first square in the 2nd row you will drop down from 10 to 11. Then, move toward the left and drop down from 20 to 21 and move right.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

On each of the following squares draw the symbols for each:

  • Square 15-House of Rebirth, Ankh
  • Square 26- House of Happiness, bird
  • Square 27-House of Water, three squiggly lines
  • Square 28- House of the Three Truths, three dots forming a triangle
  • Square 29- House of the Re-Atoum, Eye of Horus
The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

Finally, you want to create tokens to move.

You can use pawns from another game, glass gems (flat marbles) or create your own by using air dry or oven bake clay.

We tried to make ours to look similar, but simpler version of the original tokens.

And we formed the black ones into drops and flattened out the white ones like this. Bake or air dry according to package directions.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

Then, create rules for your game.

Creating Rules for Ancient Egypt DIY SENET Game

Look at some of these rules.

Place pawns along the top row, alternating colors.

Player 1 takes first, third, fifth, seventh, and ninth houses. Player 2 takes second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth houses

  • Toss your “dice” and make your move according to what side lands upright:
  • 4 colored side up- move 5 spaces and throw again
  • 3 colored side up- move 3 spaces
  • 2 colored side up- move 2 spaces
  • 1 colored side up- move 1 space

Two tokens cannot occupy the same square. So, if you land on a square with someone else’s pawn you move theirs back to where you were.

But if they have two or more pieces next to each other the house is protected and you will not be able to move their pawn or finish your turn.

Meaning of Special Places in DIY Senet Game

If you land on space 27 you go to Space 15 (House of Rebirth).

Every piece must stop on Space 26.

In some versions you must throw a certain number to leave the space (you can make this a house rule if you like).

For example, if you are on 25 and do not throw exactly one move you must stay there until your next turn and continue throwing until you can move the exact number of places to land there.

Space 27( House of Water)- if you land here, you are sent back to the House of Rebirth.  If you fail to throw the correct number on space 28 or 29 you are sent here.

Space 28 (House of Three Truths)- You must throw a three to leave here, otherwise you are sent back to House of Water (27).

Space 29 (House of the Re-Atoum) You must throw a two to leave, if not you are sent back to the House of Water.

The Geronimo Stilton Book Fourth Journey Fun Egypt Game

When you land on the last house you must toss your sticks each turn until on 1 colored stick is facing up and then you may remove your piece from the board.
