We don’t really think about breathing, but it is amazing the way it happens. The respiratory system is the part of your body that helps you breathe and keeps you alive.

The respiratory system is the group of organs and tissues that work together to help you breathe.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM FUN FACTS

  • Bringing in oxygen (O₂) and remove carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the respiratory system’s main job to exchange gases.
  • Did you know your lungs are not the same size? The left lung is a bit smaller to make space for your heart.
  • You start by breathing in through your nose or mouth. Your nose even helps warm and clean the air.
  • Then the air travels down your throat (pharynx) and passes through the voice box (larynx).
  • Next the air then moves into the trachea, also called your windpipe.
  • The diaphragm is the main muscle involved in breathing.
