Thank you for joining us this week at Finishing Strong – the link-up that focuses on middle & high school students.

Our favorite posts from last week:

Amy from Milk and Cookies liked reading Growing a Leader from BJ’s Homeschool.

Finishing Strong ~ Homeschooling the Middle & High School Years #9 Education Possible

Amy said, “being the mother of a natural-born leader, I really appreciate hearing from other moms like Betsy. Her post gives lots of ideas, including some that are out of the box, for encouraging your son or daughter to become a leader in their community.”

She also enjoyed 5 Reasons Why We Homeschool Year Round from Education Possible.

five reasons why we school year round EducationPossible

“Like Megan, I strongly believe in the benefits of homeschooling all year long, with many breaks throughout the year! I found myself nodding my head in complete agreement the whole time I was reading her post,” said Amy.

Kyle from Aspired Living enjoyed Helpful Homeschool Habit: The End in Mind from Hodgepodge.

Finishing Strong ~ Homeschooling the Middle & High School Years #9 Education Possible

Kyle said, “I think it is all too easy to get caught up in the fear of man, competition, fear of failure etc. in homeschooling and Hodgepodge’s post was an excellent reminder to put first things first.”

“I have the end in mind. Now that I have high schoolers, that picture of ‘the end’ is more clearly focused on what my desire is for them to be as adults.”

She also liked reading Mapping Out our Homeschool High School Plan from Homeschool Creations.

Finishing Strong ~ Homeschooling the Middle & High School Years #9 Education Possible

When Kyle was exploring homeschooling, she was concerned about her kids’ ability to get into college and homeschooling through high school. One of her questions was, “how do you make sure your kids take the “right” high school classes?” The advice she received was to start with where you would like them to be in 12th grade and plan backwards.

She said, “this plan is yet another weapon in my arsenal of high school preparation to make sure my kiddos are prepared to pursue whatever path they choose. Plus, I am able to document and present a college or employer a transcript that demonstrates a well laid plan.”

Here are our favorites from last week:

Heather from Blog She Wrote loved fellow co-host Heidi’s post on Preparing your High School Student for the PSAT.

Finishing Strong ~ Homeschooling the Middle & High School Years #7

She said, “Heidi does a thorough job of preparing parents for the world of college testing. As a homeschooling parent of a 10th grader this year, we’ve already gone through one testing period and we are gearing up for another round. I appreciate the information on the breakdown of the tests as well as the timeline and prep tips.”

Heather also suggests checking with your local school system on the PSAT before getting too far. Her school system does not allow 10th graders to take the exam, so it’s best to make sure in May that a test will be set aside for them in the fall. Many schools order the tests in May.

Also, remember that the PSAT is taken during normal school hours while the SAT and ACT are take on weekends.

She also enjoyed Homeschooling High School – A Plethora of Resources from Sweetness and Light

Finishing Strong ~ Homeschooling the Middle & High School Years #7

Heather loved the way Meredith pulled together many resources for high schooling parents. There are some faith oriented items, along with online partners to help you with high school.

“I enjoy reading about all the ways parents can offer up a unique high school experience for their teens. Thanks for the list!” says Heather.

Tina from Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus loved To Sow A Seed from Roots and Wings.

Finishing Strong ~ Homeschooling the Middle & High School Years #7

Tina said, “As I reflected on graduating my first son last year, the words written in To Sow a Seed, echoed how true it is that as parents, we face a daunting task in raising our teens.”

“Gaining independence is a gradual process and the time comes soon enough for our teens to take charge of their life. Roots and wings matter.”

She also enjoyed reading Review: The Camp X Series by Eric Walters from Tea Time with Annie Kate.
Finishing Strong ~ Homeschooling the Middle & High School Years
As a history loving person, Tina was intrigued by this well-researched World War II series for middleschoolers. “I can’t wait to take a look at them,” she said.

Our favorite posts from last week:

 Eva from Eva Varga enjoyed:

Homeschooling High School is Not As Hard As You Think Though my kids are not yet in high school, I really appreciated this post. It gave me a lot of things to think about and helped put me at ease when planning and preparing for the high school years.

The Salamander Room: Amphibians and Reptiles  As a science specialist, this one really charmed me.  My kids have a newly rediscovered love for herps and though we read (and enjoyed) this delightful story when they were younger, it is time we revisit it. I strongly believe that children’s books are a wonderful teaching tool for all ages and this book proves it.  There are so many ways to integrate this book into the curriculum and Heather shares many. 🙂

Susan from Education Possible liked:

Writing Co-op for High School Students This post really touched me because my son also struggles with writing.  We’ve decided to spend the next several months focusing on building his writing skills and confidence so the timing of this inspiring post was perfect!

High School Electives What a great reminder that high school is about so much more than just academics!  Extracurricular activities and volunteer opportunities will not only give student a chance to explore their interests, they can also significantly help with the college application process.

Finishing Strong Homeschool Link-up!

Spring is here!  For many families that means getting outdoors to explore nature, starting new homeschool projects, and  planning for a new school year.  We would love to hear about your adventures!

Please stop back every week to share your creative and inspirational posts about homeschooling older kids.

Do you want to connect with other parents homeschooling older kids? Join our Finishing Strong Community on Google+!

Here are a few of our co-host’s favorite posts from last week:

Amy from Milk and Cookies liked Celebrate Spring with Hodgepodge Art! from Heather Woodie

We are NOT an artsy family. Painting, drawing, sculpting…it is a challenge for us. Heather, Tricia, and Nana make chalking look SO easy. This post has convinced me to give art another try! Pass the chalk pastels, please.

Celebrate Spring with Hodgepodge Art!

Amy was also a fan of: The Benefits of Making Mistakes: Lessons from Toll House Cookies from Megan Zechman.

My blog name tells you that I am definitely a fan of cookies, so I immediately clicked over to see how Megan was going to creatively incorporate yummy cookies into her homeschool. Not only did I discover a new book about inventors, I learned the difference between baking with 3 different styles of chocolate.

The Benefits of Making Mistakes: Lessons from Toll House Cookies

Kyle from Aspired Living enjoyed Life of Fred Homeschool Math by Heather Woodie

Have you heard of Life of Fred? LOF is an innovate and unusual Math program written by a college professor that teaches math to children while the follow the Life of Fred. She uses as her main math program and I use it to as a supplement to our math program. This post provides a very detailed explanation of LOF a unique and fun math program.

Kyle was also excited to see: Year Around Homeschool  Planning Schedule by Tina

Maybe it’s just my personality but unless I plan it out it just isn’t happening. When I first began homeschooling I took a class from Tina IRL and ever since I’ve used her planner pages in my homemade planners. As we begin to school multiple levels from High School to preschool I’ve found planning is even more important and then ever!

Year-Round-Homeschoool-Schedule2-Collage-2014-to-20151

Kyle also wanted to let everyone know how much she really likes the blog AngelicScalliwags!

This is one creative homeschool Mama as you will see. This woman used Playmobil to explain Dante’s Inferno to her students. This is off subject but in her post she has the biggest basket I have ever seen it almost engulfs her teenager.Back on topic….she created a Playmobil Diorama that does a better job explaining the rings of the inferno then my professor did at Berkeley!  At the end she says “I’m not sure how we did it, and I’m certain I never want to do such a complex project again, but we did finish it and in the assigned week.  Phew.  Never again though.” What I want to know is how she thought of this in the first place?! If you are looking for creative homeschooling go no further stop and visit Angelic Scalliwags!

Your favorite post from last week:

The most clicked post was Not Finishing the School Year from Annie Kate at Tea Time with Annie Kate. She shared some encouraging words for moms who ever realized that they weren’t going to finish the school year in the way they had planned.

Our favorites from last week:

Heather from Blog She Wrote chose Homeschool Science Pinterest Boards from Marci at The Homeschool Scientist.

She said, “As a science educator, I have a special place in my heart for all things science. Marci shares some fantastic science instruction along with middle and high school science boards.” Follow along!

Homeschool Science Pinterest Boards

Heather also enjoyed Journey North Mystery Class by Sandra at School of Serendipity. She heard about this fun global game of hide-n-seek, but hasn’t tried it. You track seasonal changes in sunlight and explore other clues to find 10 secret sites around the world.

“I especially enjoyed how Serendipity explains how their process along with the detailed pictures of their data collection and extrapolation. Looks like this is a fun game to join,” says Heather.

Tina from Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus liked Planning the Logic Stage, Part 1 by fellow co-host Kyle at Aspired Living.

It reminded her it is not too early to start planning for next year. Have you started planning for next year’s curriculum yet?

hptls1

Because history is one of her very favorite subjects, Tina also enjoyed the Medieval Mini Presentation by Claire at Angelicscalliwags.

She felt, not only was it a great opportunity to show the benefits of homeschooling, but it is a great tool for reviewing what they have learned. “I hope Grandma and Grandpa were impressed,” she said.
