- Seismologists, a type of geophysicist, study earthquakes and use seismic waves to understand the crust, mantle, and core.

- Geophysicists focus on how the Earth works internally, including seismic waves, magnetism, and heat flow.
LAYERS OF THE EARTH

INNER CORE- THE SOLID METAL HEART
- About 1,500 miles wide
- Made of solid iron and nickel
- Temperatures reach over 9,000°F
- Stays solid because of extreme pressure
- Helps power the magnetic field with the outer core
OUTER CORE- LIQUID METAL THAT CREATES MAGNETISM
- Made of liquid iron and nickel
- Constantly swirling
- This movement generates Earth’s magnetic field
- The magnetic field protects us from solar radiation and helps birds migrate
MANTLE- SLOW-MOVING ROCK
- The thickest layer (1,800+ miles thick!)
- Made of hot, semi-solid rock
- Moves slowly in convection currents
- Movement causes plate tectonics, volcanoes, and earthquakes
CRUST- THE LAYER WE LIVE ON
- Oceanic crust is thinner; continental crust is thicker
- Thinnest layer (only 3–45 miles thick)
- Broken into moving tectonic plates
- Includes oceans, continents, mountains, soil, and rock
One fascinating part of studying Earth’s layers is that no one has ever traveled to the mantle or the core- yet scientists still know they exist.
How? They use seismic waves, the vibrations that move through the Earth during earthquakes. These waves change speed and direction depending on whether they pass through solid rock, liquid metal, or cooler crust.
By studying these patterns, scientists create detailed models of Earth’s internal structure. This process, called seismic tomography, works almost like taking an X-ray of the planet.
Your LEGO model represents what these measurements reveal deep below the surface.

HOW TO CREATE LEGO EARTH LAYERS
For this simple build, I used a combination of brick lengths, all 2 studs wide. This keeps the number of needed bricks to a minimum, ensuring you have enough while still enabling you to demonstrate the layers from the inside out.
You will need:
LEGO bricks in 4-6 distinct colors
Choose a small group of bricks (2×2, 2×3, 2×4, or 2×6). Create a tight, compact shape. Keep it small; it should be the smallest part of the build.
Use orange bricks to form a ring around the inner core. Make this layer slightly larger, about 1–2 bricks thick.
Add yellow or red bricks to create a much thicker ring. Use two or more layers of height for a more dramatic 3D look. This ring should be the largest and thickest part of the model.
Go around with a layer of brown bricks next.
Use green bricks for land areas. Use blue bricks to represent oceanic crust.
Make a thin outer ring that only uses one layer of bricks.
