And you can usually observe all of them at the same time if you find a sizable patch.

Dandelion Flower Unit Study Facts

  • Dandelion seeds can float, thanks to the wind, up to 5 miles away from their start point.
  • The word dandelion comes from the French- “dent de lion,” which is “lion’s tooth.”
  • Dandelion flowers open in the morning and close in the evening.
  • They are wildflowers.
  • Though many think so, dandelions are not weeds, they are a member of the sunflower family.
  • Every part of the dandelion is edible from the roots to the bright yellow flowers.
  • Dandelions are from the Taraxacum genus, and there are about 250 different species of dandelions.
  • A dandelion is a perennial plant.
  • You can find dandelions in meadows, in cracks of sidewalks, and along roadsides.
  • The leaves of dandelions are long and deeply toothed.
  • In some places of the United States, they are considered a pesky weed and in other places they are welcomed in the garden.

All over the world, wherever dandelions grow, children love to blow the fluffy white, airborne seeds into the air to predict the number of one’s future children by counting the seeds.

  • ovary – The enlarged portion of the pistil where ovules are produced.
  • flower head – A compact mass of flowers at the top of a stem,

  • pistil – The female organs of a flower, comprising the stigma, style, and ovary.
  • style –  This is the name for the stalk of the pistil.

Too, do a flower unit investigation.

Carefully pull up an entire dandelion plant from the root up, you may want to take a trowel with you to be sure that you are able to get everything. 

Try to get a plant that includes a flower, buds, and a seed head.

Wash away the dirt and pat dry.

Lay the plant on a piece of paper. If you are missing sections of the plant like buds or seed heads you can add them to the bunch now.

Write out each part of the plant you want your child to identify (or they can do that part as well)

For younger children you may just choose to do flowers, seeds, roots, leaves, stem.

Older children may label every part of the plant including the various stages of the life cycle.

Have your child place the labels next to the flowers.

How to Make Dandelion Tea

The most important part of this recipe is that you collect flowers from an area that you know has not been sprayed with any kind of chemicals.

You will need:

  • Dandelions
  • Water
  • Honey or another sweetener

Gather a bunch of dandelion flower heads.

Rinse them all well.

Pull the yellow petals off, while the green won’t hurt you it can make your tea bitter.

Boil 1 cup of water.

Today I have a Greek mythology unit study. Grab more ideas on my Ancient Greece Homeschool Unit Study, and on my best homeschool unit studies pages.

This unit study can be slanted anyway you want and it’s important for your student to understand to look at the world the way the Greeks did.

For example, there were scary gods and they believed they created humans.

A Greek mythology unit study is a great topic for middle schoolers.

It is interesting and exciting, filled with stories of gods and goddesses, mythical creatures, warriors, heroes, and ancient rituals.

It is one of my favorite middle and high school topics to cover.

You could put together a simple light study with a few retellings and the why of how Greek myths came to be or take a deep dive with your child and spend a month or more with these resources if they enjoy it.

Too, I have a simple LEGO tutorial for you to create your own Zeus brick-by-brick.

 Or use it as inspiration to recreate your favorite Greek myths. Maybe a Medusa?

Or maybe a Chimaera? I tried to keep it as simple as possible, using only bricks that come in the basic sets like the large creative box so that you don’t need any special pieces to recreate it.

About the Greeks World View

The Greeks believed that the world was flat, but circular. At the center of the Universe was Greece.

Their world was divided by the Mediterranean, which in Latin means “Middle of the Lands”. The river Ocean flowed around the world in a clockwise motion.

12 gods considered Olympian gods.

There are 12 main or chief gods among the Greeks.

They are supposed to live on Mount Olympus, which was the highest mountain in Greece. 

And they are known by two names, their Greek and Roman name.

Look below as I give the clue, then the answer.

1.Clue: goddess of love and beauty 
Greek: APHRODITE       Roman: VENUS

2. Clue: god of youth, music and poetry
 Greek: APOLLO           Roman: APOLLO (note: the names are the same in both Greek and Roman.

4. Clue: goddess of vegetation and fertility
 Greek: DEMETER         Roman: CERES

5. Clue: sister of Apollo, goddess of the hunt, wild animals and childbirth

Greek Mythology Unit Study Vocabulary

Also, look at some of these words to help your children differentiate between myths and legends.

  • myth – The word myth comes from the Greek word ‘mythos’ which means ‘to tell a story’. Myths are stories with a message. Normally the people telling them believe the myth to be true. They’re used to provide an explanation to the beginning of the world, nature, or explain human behavior.
  • legends – Legends are not true, but they are based on fact, such as a real person, a place, or an event.
  • folktale – Folktales are normally for entertainment and are usually set in a particular time.
  • ancient – There are varying opinions, but historians generally use the dates between 1000 BCE and the death of Alexander the Great, in 323 BCE to mean the ancient period. Then, explain the difference between B.C.E and C.E.
  • amphora – a large, tall urn that often has two handles; used for storing wine, corn, oil, and honey
  • Cronos – a first generation Titan (giant) who is the father of Zeus.
  • ambrosia – the food of the gods
  • nectar – the drink of the gods

Additionally, because your family may go down different rabbit trails, look at some of these objectives to help you plan your study.

  • Ancient Greeks worshipped many gods and goddesses.
  • The gods and goddesses of ancient Greece were believed to be immortal and to have supernatural powers, unlike humans.
  • Mount Olympus was the place believed by the Ancient Greeks to be the home of the gods.
  • Some of the mythical creatures are Pan, Pegasus, and Centaurs.

All the parts below are available in the basic LEGO Creative box but I did need to dig into a second box for a few extra pieces.

Improvise and use what you have on hand if needed for instance if it calls for 1 tan 2×4 brick you can use 2 tan 1 x 4 bricks instead to fill the same space.

You will need:

  • 2 tan 1 x 1 tan studs
  • 2 Tan 1 x 2 slope bricks
  • 4 tan 1 x 2 bricks
  • 5 tan 2 x 4 bricks
  • 3 tan 1 x 4 bricks
  • 1 tan 2 x 2 brick
  • 3 Yellow 1 x 3 bricks
  • 4 white 1×2 bricks
  • 3 white 2×2 sloped bricks
  • 2 white slope 2 x 1 x 2
  • 2 white brackets 1 x 2 – 2 x 2

Start at the bottom creating feet and legs by stacking 2 tan 1 x 2 studs on top of the tan 1×2 slope bricks.

Secure those to a 2×4 white brick to create his cloth.

If you want to create a fuller toga style you can substitute a couple of the tan bricks in the next step with more white.

Stack 3 tan 2×4 bricks to create a trunk.

Put 2 white brackets 1 x 2 – 2 x 2 in front and back for beard and hair.

Put a 1×2 brick on either side of the white brackets.

Create a head by stacking 1 tan 2×2 and then 2 tan 2×4 bricks on top.

Attach 2 white slopes 2 x 1 x 2 to 2 white 1×2 bricks and secure them to either side of the head.

Finish the hair by adding 2 white 2×2 sloped bricks to either side of the head with the slope facing outward and add the 3rd one to the bracket to fill out his beard.

Pop 2 tan 1x2s to the end of his arms to lengthen them and then create a lightning bolt for his hand by alternating 3 yellow 1 x 3 bricks in a z shape.

You can even create a little Mount Olympus emerging from the clouds like our Zeus is standing on.

My coral reef lapbook is a fun one to do anytime of the year.

Besides a coral reef being an ecosystem, you’ll want to learn about the organisms which live there.

The Great Barrier Reef is so vast it can be seen from space.

At one time it was thought coral reefs were only in shallow depths, but scientists are discovering that some are as deep as 19000 feet.

However, most coral reefs are found at 150 feet where sunlight penetrates.

What Is Coral

Coral reefs are formed by colonies of tiny coral animals.

It is formed from the hard outer skeletons of tiny animals called polyps.

When the tiny animals die, the old skeletons remain, and new coral animals grow over them.

That is how coral reefs grow.

Too, coral can only grow in warm water because polyps only eat algae.

Moreover, living polyps are what give the coral color. If they die, the reef bleaches. It becomes white or loses it color.

Coral is a type of animal that lives in colonies. Each animal consists of a polyp that is the size of an ant.

Polyps have stinging tentacles which they use to catch small plankton as they drift by.

Coral reefs have a symbiotic relationship with tiny algae called zooanthellae.

The algae live inside the polyp tentacles.

Two Main Types of Coral

There are two main types of coral. One is hard coral with an outer skeleton made of calcium carbonate and soft coral which have bits of calcium carbonate inside their bodies.

Then, add a few of these words to your coral reef unit study and lapbook.

Coral Vocabulary

  • algae – a plant like organism that turns light into energy but does not have leaves or roots
  • coral reef – have been described as underwater gardens and coral polyps have the unique ability to thrive in nutrient poor water
  • ecosystem – a community of plants and animals relying on each other to survive
  • habitat – the place where an organism or group of organisms live
  • polyp– it’s a tiny animal that looks like an upside-down jellyfish and comes in many sizes and shapes
  • phytoplankton – a type of plankton that gets its energy from the sun through photosynthesis
  • zooplankton – tiny ocean animals like some jellyfish

I have a shark unit study, an easy shark STEM activity, and free shark notebooking pages. Also, grab more ideas on my best homeschool unit studies, Oceans Unit Study and Lapbook, and Coral Reef pages.

A shark unit study is a fun way to learn about these creatures of the deep even if you don’t live near the ocean, I would prefer not to study them up close anyway.

We can get up close and personal through videos, hands-on activities, fun facts, and fantastic books.

Did you know that, unlike many other bony fishes, sharks do not have a swim bladder that gives them buoyancy?

How Do Sharks Float STEM Activity Free Shark Unit Study & Notebooking Pages

To help overcome their tendency to sink there are large amounts of oil in their liver that is less dense than seawater.

 Also, sharks are made of cartilage rather than bone which is considerably lighter.

To demonstrate why that helps sharks float we are going to create a couple of sharks and perform a fun STEM Experiment.

First, look at some facts for your shark unit study.

  • There are over 500 species of sharks.
  • Shark skin feels very similar to sandpaper.
  • The fastest shark is the Shortfin Mako Shark, clocked at 31mph with short bursts of speed up to 46 mph.
  • The largest shark is the Whale shark while the smallest is the Dwarf Lantern Shark.
  • Prehistoric sharks were called Megalodons.
  • Sharks are found in almost every ocean habitat from coral reefs to the arctic sea.
  • Sharks do not sleep as humans do, but instead, they have active and restful periods.

What are Sharks

Sharks are the ocean’s ultimate predators. Some sharks live in the cold polar waters and others prefer the warm tropical seas.

And a shark is a fish because it swims with fins and has gills.

However, it is a cartilaginous fish and not a bony fish.

Shark Food

Additionally, sharks vary in their diet and in the way they hunt prey.

For example, the tiger shark is famous for eating, anything even license plates.

And the white-tipped shark stays in deep water and is famous because it ate shipwrecked sailors during World War II.

In addition, sharks have larger brains than other fish and can have advanced hunting techniques.

Too, many sharks rely on camouflage and being able to sneak up on their prey.

Moreover, others are filter eaters. They swim with their mouth open, suck in water, and filter the food from the water.

Their meal consists of tiny animals and plants called “plankton” floating in the water.

Also, here are some shark vocabulary words.

  • pup – baby shark
  • dorsal fin – a fin on the back of a fish.
  • caudal fin – the tail fin.
  • pectoral fin – paired fins toward the front of the shark
  • cartilage – tough connective tissue which is not bone
  • marine biologist – a scientist who studies marine (ocean) organisms
  • cartilaginous fish – skeletons are made of cartilage like sharks, rays, and eels

Shark Unit Study – How Do Sharks Float STEM Activity

You will need:

  • 2 water bottles.
  • Craft foam
  • Sharpies
  • Vegetable oil
  • Water
  • A large container.

Fill two water bottles with the exact same amount of liquid – one with water and one with vegetable oil.

Decorate the bottles if you’d like to make them look more like sharks.

Use craft foam to make teeth and fins and then you can draw the details like eyes with a permanent marker.

Use hot glue for a quick secure drying adhesive but apply it to the foam rather than the plastic bottle and avoid touching with the metal nozzle.

Once everything has dried on your “shark“ you’re ready to test them out in the water.

A large storage tote is perfect for this experiment, fill it halfway full of water and drop in your sharks.

Now it’s time for observation and determining the results. What did you notice? 

While the one with water stays somewhat afloat it is more weighted, the oil field shark floats much more effortlessly.

  • It takes only 20 to 21 days for chickens to hatch an egg once they begin sitting on their clutch of eggs.
  • Chickens can recognize and remember around 100 different faces of humans and other chickens.
  • You may think that chickens are herbivores, but they are omnivores. They will eat a wide variety of things from vegetables and seeds to bugs, and kitchen scraps, including leftover chicken.
  • There are more chickens on earth than any other type of bird.
  • Mother hens talk to their babies in the egg by making purring noises to them, the babies will even chirp back from inside the egg.

And this activity can be adjusted to fit a child of any age.

Anatomy of an Egg Felt Activity

You will need:

  • Tan felt
  • White felt
  • Yellow felt
  • Red felt
  • White yarn/string
  • Cardstock       
  • Hot glue guns/stick

Cut an egg shape out of tan felt, you want to make it several inches tall so that you have plenty of room to label all the parts.

Trace the egg shape onto white felt and cut it out slightly smaller, leaving a very thin border for the shell.

Cut a small notch out of the bottom like this for the air sac.

Cut a circle of yellow to make the yolk, and add a small light circle on the yolk with a white crayon or paint pen.

Twist the white yarn from the top to the bottom of the eggshell and glue the yolk over top of it.

Write each of the parts of the egg on cardstock and cut them out Yolk, Eggshell, Chalaza, Shell, Germinal disc, and Albumen.

Or take it a step further and have your child type out their own labels for typing practice and to reinforce the new spelling words.

Now the egg can be put together and glued if you want it to stay permanent.

Or leave the parts loose so it can be built and rebuilt. Add the labels to mark each part of the egg.

Additionally, you can crack open a real egg to see the real-life parts. Have your child point out each one with a skewer.
